What reliable suv do you recommend me?

I'm a college student and I want to get an SUV with a budget of around $12k I was looking for a Tucson but some people say they're very unreliable, right when I buy the suv I will travel from Cleveland to Washington DC and back but other than that that's the only big road trip I'll do, then I will mostly drive in on the weekends max 100 miles each week and some weeks maybe even less than 50 miles but it has to be an SUV and under 110k miles and preferably nice looking or not way too old, but also I wonder if a Tucson would be okay for me if I should stay away from it

I would look for Honda CR-V, Mazda CX5, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester, Nissan Rogue. Have a mechanic check the car before buying.

You lost me at rogue.

Toyota > Mazda > Honda. Choose one.
Stay the fuck away from Hyundai/KIA, Nissan or anything German.

This is the correct answer.
I wouldn’t own any of those vehicles without a bumper to bumper warranty.
Toyotas and Mazda are proven to be extremely reliable and cheap to maintain. Honda has been hit or miss in recent years. It seems that if all the recalls are taken care of, they’re still good vehicles (but they have a ton of recalls right now).

Agree with the 2.0t and 2.4L. The 2.5L post 2020 looks promising, but probably outside OPs budget

Im trying to increase my budget and go for a 2017 Mazda cx5 with 100k miles, hopefully I can get a good deal at the dealership, maybe by buying it in cash they can lower the price hopefully

Why "SUV"?
A beige corrola is just fine

My family is the one buying it and they’ll make the trip w me so we need the space of an SUV, if not I would just get a sedan and no problem but whenever they get to visit me we’ll all use it so need the space

If you’re ok with a larger, less efficient, and primarily RWD (as 4wd trucks are) I’d recommend the 05-15 Nissan xterra or 05-12 Nissan pathfinder. If they look interesting to you, I can tell you more about what to look for/avoid with them.

Find a 2009-2012 rav4. The v6 with lower gear ratio of those years and awd makes for a very fun small suv. I average 23mpg driving 70 miles round trip every day for work. Bought it at 120k miles in 2016 and it’s currently nearing 260k miles.
Very comfortable seats, second row slides and reclines, large cargo area with a very large hidden compartment underneath due to the full size spare mounted on the back swing gate. Towing capacity of 3500lbs.
My biggest complaint about it (and all Toyotas) is the cupholders. They come with a rubber boot to put in the cupholder to fit a cup better. They constantly get stuck on the bottom of cups and we’ve been lucky to catch ourselves every time we’re about to throw one away at a gas station. And then if your cup is tall it interferes with the dash above it and your cup doesn’t fit. They’re also positioned where the cups block the seat warmer buttons, a small cubby, and a 12v plug.
I’ve not taken great care of mine and it just keeps taking a beating. Oil gets changed when I get time to do it, I’ve taken it accidentally down mud roads and had to rip the bumper off to keep the wheels wells clear, I hit two deer with it last spring a month apart and insurance paid out $6k to have it repaired along with my deposit, hit another deer with it last week, and about 10 miles of my daily commute is on washboarded gravel roads.
