7900xt upgrade?

Hi, I currently have a 3070ti and wanted to upgrade my gpu for 2k 175hz gaming. I found an all white 7900xt for $720 and was wondering if it’s worth the upgrade. Or should I upgrade to a 7900 xtx or just wait till the new series?
LightmanDavidL@reddit
You have a 3 year old $500+ RTX 3070 Ti.
Why on earth do you think you need an upgrade?
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
I don’t really but I would like to get more fps. Right now I’m getting around 80 at 1440p on COD and Wukong. But now that you put it that way it’s better I wait for the next series.
LightmanDavidL@reddit
Bare with me, this response somehow got rather lengthy...
You don't really need an upgrade but would like to get more fps.
You're getting 80 fps in 1440p on both COD and Wukong. Which COD, I have no idea so I'll go with BO6.
And now in less than 2 minutes I ask two brief questions but you're still looking to invest more money into the next series of GPU when your current GPU is a 3 year old $500+ RTX 3070 Ti.
COD BO6 calls for a measly i5 6600 paired with a GTX 960, both from 2015.
Black Myth Wukong calls for an i5 8400 paired with an RX 580, both from 2017.
Even when you look at the recommended specs of both these games they call for a GPU well under the performance of your 3 year old $500+ RTX 3070 Ti.
It's understandable to desire a super high frame rate in COD but not so much in Wukong. Sure an argument can be made here but there's no competition involved with Wukong. Precision maybe, but not competition.
Have you tried tweaking the hell out of the graphic settings of these two games?
I can see Black Myth Wukong not giving you 100+ fps but right around 90 should be possible with the right graphic setting tweaks. In COD BO6 you should be well over 100+ fps when tweaking the graphic settings.
VRAM should not be an issue at all in these games, especially when you tweak the graphic settings. And visual fidelity can stay intact, it's all about time invested into the art of graphic setting tweaks. A lot of people don't want to do this but once you invest that initial time in tweaking, you're all set. You don't have to do it every day.
The point I'm hoping to get across here is that I've stretched my 1070 8 years in 1440p now. With zero desire to upgrade. You have 3 year old $500+ RTX 3070 Ti. And that $500+ is still what it's currently worth. My 1070 is worth maybe $50. You still have at least a half, it not full decade worth of time from that 3070 Ti. There is but just one reason I can see to upgrade it and that's when you receive $500 in your pocket for it. You do that and you can then invest just $100 to say... no more than $250 more money into a GPU that has to be a lot better than an RTX 3070 Ti in terms of both VRAM and shader count because believe it or not the 3070 Ti has a whopping 6144 shader count.
So with $500 + $100 to $250 I'd target a $600 to $750 NVIDIA GPU with 12-16 GB of VRAM and a higher shader count than 6144. Which is a $600 4070 Super or $700 4070 Ti. The $500 has to be in your pocket first though.
So unless this next series of NVIDIA GPU is $600 to $750 with 12-16 GB of VRAM with a higher shader count than 7168 to 7680, not much reason to buy it.
bong-water@reddit
Bo6 is poorly optimized. Graphic tweaks might get him to 90-100 but he'd be playing on low.
LightmanDavidL@reddit
There are other ways of going about tweaking graphic settings as an alternative to setting graphic settings to low.
bong-water@reddit
Outside of the graphical settings within the game he isn't getting passed that with setup. Unless there's something else you're referring to.
LightmanDavidL@reddit
I'm referring to things you can turn on or off besides graphic settings.
Things such as DLSS, FSR, Image Scaling(upscaling technology), etc, etc.
Turning on or off certain things like this and tweaking specific sliders can boost performance. Some people don't know which ones to turn on or off and which sliders to tweak to do this and also how it affects visual fidelity.
There's other things within an OS that can be fine tuned for gaming performance and visual fidelity and not everyone tweaks these things.
bong-water@reddit
I'm sure he's taking advantage of dlss if he has it. I use fsr on performance, turned off all the bullshit settings, and get 100-110 fps with a 7800xt on this game on normal settings outside of textures. Not sure what OS settings would make a difference though
LightmanDavidL@reddit
Right, not everyone knows all the tweaks both inside and outside of games.
bong-water@reddit
But what are they? What is going to magically improve performance for him? Id assume I'd be getting far better frames too, as does everyone else I know. Outside of ocing I'm not sure what else is going to improve performance
LightmanDavidL@reddit
It's not magic, just optimizations. And there's so many, a video showing you dozens of them is the quickest way to inform you of the types of things I'm talking about.
Here is a channel with hundreds of videos for you to dig around in.
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
Thank you! I appreciate taking your time to explain this to me. You persuaded me not to switch for the time being.
Old_Transition_630@reddit
Not to be more of a Debbie downer, as I’m sure everyone here would love to buy the next best thing. But honestly you’re getting 80fps on 1440? What do you expect is going to happen if you get a 40s series? You’re already at smooth motion gameplay
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
Just the ray tracing and I’ve seen videos where they’re performing twice as good as mine. Also it would future proof me for 4k gaming and just incase tariffs kick in and prices go up for imports.
Old_Transition_630@reddit
I understand your view, I’m not trying to get into a political argument but the tariffs aren’t going to do anything. Prices fluctuate all the time, And the only card really future proofed for 4k Gaming would be the 4090 and maybe the 4080 Super imo. Because games just aren’t really optimized for 4k rn. Also why are you going with an AMD 7900XT when you just told me you want Ray Tracing? Wouldn’t you want to stick with Nvidia?
_dharwin@reddit
Trump did tariffs in his first term and it did affect the US electronics market.
He did them before, liked them, wants to do them again, and this time raise them higher.
Why are people acting like this isn't happening or won't have an impact? Just look at his first term.
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
Most times people don’t actually research they just assume. Tariffs would definitely affect the market especially gpus.
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
Oh my fault I thought I wrote 7900xt or 4080 super. But I think I’m going to wait until next gen now. Thanks.
Old_Transition_630@reddit
All good man
bong-water@reddit
I'm getting 110 with a 7800xt at 1440p, so moving to a 7900xt would probably do exactly what he'd like
Old_Transition_630@reddit
I suppose, but you’re already at fluid motion I feel like this conversation would be more differential if he was talking about going from 30 fps to 45fps
bong-water@reddit
Online shooters tend to benefit a lot more from high frames than single player games. When I used to play promod, locking your fps at 144 vs 120 meant strafing further vs jumping higher and other strange benefits. It depends on how serious/competitive you are at the end of the day
Old_Transition_630@reddit
Interesting thanks for the info
bong-water@reddit
Np, I don't really understand the science of it, but the benefits were noticeable.
bong-water@reddit
I get around 100-110fps at 1440p on bo6 with a 7600 and a 7800xt. The 7900xt is 20% better performance than the 7800xt. Would probably get you the frames you're looking for. I'm not satisfied with fps around 60-80 for comp and fps shooters either.
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
thanks I’m still suck on paying 760 for a 7900xt or 1k for a 7900xtx. Idk if it’s worth the 300ish jump
bong-water@reddit
Ya that's expensive for a 7900xt honestly. The merc310, which is the nicest xfx is only $670 at bestbuy. Are you not in the US?
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
I am but I was looking to get a white gpu to match my pc.
bong-water@reddit
Don't think that's worth $50 or more, up to personal preference though.
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
Yeah true but it would make my pc look cleaner. Comes down to preference as you said.
Archimedley@reddit
Yeah...
I mean, it might be worth getting an upgrade just to have something before whatever tariffs might kick in
If that wasn't a concern though, I would say that's good enough to see what rdna4 and rtx 5000 does
If you don't care about dlss or nvidia whatever, then a 7900 xt isn't a bad option
I would see if newegg still has whatever zip coupon working, was like 75 off 650 last week
Basically, there's just a risk that gpu's are going to get a fair bit more expensive next year
It might be worth waiting till january, but at most with rdna 4, it's going to be a slightly cheaper 7900xt with like 16gb
5080's and 5090's should be a thing in like maybe 2 months? So there might be dome decent secondhand options
But, you might also need a cpu to get the most out of ehatever, not sure what you're using now
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
Appreciate your response I’m using a i9 9900k but I just realized after I reset my pc I forgot to turn on xmp mode. Now I’m getting 150-170 FPS at 1440p. I no longer am thinking of upgrading lol.
Stargate_1@reddit
It'd totally be worth it. Had a 3070Ti too and was happy, but a 7900XT would certainly significantly enhance your experience.
Whether you SHOULD make the jump purely depends on how willing you are to spend the money. AMD is forecast to have some really strong mid-range offers so waiting for the next gen wouldn't really harm you, although the fear of tariffs increasing prices is understandable.
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
I don’t think I need another now I just checked my xmp was turned off in the bios. I forgot to turn it back on after I reset my pc. Now I’m getting 150-175 fps at 1440p.
_dharwin@reddit
What's the return policy? I'm getting a GPU but not opening until January and will use my existing GPU until then.
2.5 months waiting let's me see prices, benchmarks, and reviews before committing and keeps the door open to a better sale.

If in the US the 7900xt from xfx is like 650 at Best Buy. Just picked one up because it's equally as nice to have a store to return it to
TheStockGuruAnalyst@reddit (OP)
I was looking at the 7900xt white to match my build it’s an all white. But yeah I could get it cheaper. I don’t think I’ll upgrade after other comments.
MiloAshworthy@reddit
I get that completely, happy gaming
