“Spain will legalise about 300,000 undocumented immigrants per year over the next three years as it seeks to expand its labour force in the face of an ageing population”
I’m confused. Doesn’t Spain have a 13% unemployment rate where the young people are hit the hardest?? (30% cannot find job?)
usesidedoor@reddit
Unemployment is structurally always very high in Spain. This is the lowest it has been since 2008.

The only option undocumented immigrants have is to work for cash with no protection. that allows businesses to offer those jobs to undocumented workers for far less than what the minimum wage is. Once you document those immigrants and open the option of working legally, they will be far less likely to continue working for cash jobs, it will also allow them to get more realistic market numbers in terms of who stands where. Also these people are already in the country and mostly already working, and have set up roots in the country. So you aren't making anything worse.

I thought there was a lot of youth emigrating out of Spain for better economies, or am I thinking of another country?
BookmarksBrother@reddit
Luckily they found more desperate guys that are willing to stay

Canada moment
TheCursedMonk@reddit
Yeah but those ones want actual wages, these ones let you go waaaaay down.
PierreFeuilleSage@reddit
Spain raised its minimal wage 40%. Regularising workers without papers will prevent employers from circumventing the system with exploitable labor outside the law. This is a good thing for the working class.
UnsafestSpace@reddit
This isn’t to help their economy at all - Spain has an ageing demographic and they can’t borrow more debt (which is already at ludicrous levels) without paying crazy interest rates as nobody believes they can repay it with their current demographic population makeup.
Adding millions more young men to the official statistics allows Spain and its current socialist government to start borrowing again and kicking the can down the road

It seems they are capitalizing on a south american qualified immigration somehow. So native spanish speaker mostly. I dont think they realistically believe that underqualified african immigration is going to help their population more than it help the economy. It is nice to look at nice number on a board but its also nice to have a population that isnt struggling to make a living too. While immigration can help growth , if often translate to increase profit for corporation mostly.

I am not in Spain, but in Belgium.
But please tell me why did I have to provide my bachelor diploma, have 10 years of experience, pass a job interview, prove that I have no HIV/tuberculosis/syphilis, get a work and residence permit just to get my right to live in Belgium?
Why do people with a better skin colour get it all for free.
By the way, I lost my right to earn money / pay taxes when I renewed my docs. Would those better people be treated the same?
FeeeFiiFooFumm@reddit
Don't be fooled by the apparent looks of it. This has nothing to do with the "brown" people getting preferential treatment because our elites are such humanitarians.
The illegals are easier to exploit and you can be sure that their legality will be put on shaky ground to make them compliant.
This has never been about fairness. It's only about money and who can be easier exploited for it.
You going against "the others" only helps "them up there" to stay in power while you look the other way.
loggy_sci@reddit
They won’t be ‘illegals’, they will be legal workers and have labor rights. This actually makes it more difficult to exploit these workers.
But don’t let that get in the way of your anti-immigration rant.
FeeeFiiFooFumm@reddit
I'm not sure if you even understood what I said. I'm not ranting against immigration.
Also, you clearly haven't read the article because they sure as fuck don't get any labor rights. At least none anyone cares about.
So, before you make a fool out of yourself, maybe stop and think a minute next time.
Doc_Eckleburg@reddit
This sounds like the most realistic answer, it’s about getting people who are already there doing shitty work off the books, legalised so they can either carry on doing the same work but documented and paying tax.
Would this also mean they would be free to move within the Schengen Area or would there be restrictions? Could it be a way for Spain to shift migrants on?
BookmarksBrother@reddit
But them being off the books is what makes them desperate and easily exploited lol. As soon as they have permanent residency or citizenship they get worker protection and can claim benefits.
FeeeFiiFooFumm@reddit
Insert Omniman meme: "But that's the neat part: they don't."
That's how the fuck em over. Work permit to collect taxes and keep tabs but no residency or citizenship.
alexos77lo@reddit
You are not looking to be working on a warehouse moving boxes and earning a minimum, or waking at 5 am and going to the farm to take care of the crops. You are searching for a high salary and a office job as minimum. Those basic jobs that nobody wants to do is what they are taking the immigrants the same happens in USA.
ebulient@reddit
It’s all about supply and demand - do you have the skills that are in demand? From the last para of your post it looks like you don’t have those skills. Don’t fail behind your skin colour or your documents not being approved. At the end of the day if you have the skills that are in demand, for the price on offer, you would be allowed to work.
Africanvar@reddit
Lol . Just because you did some bullshit to live in belgium doesnt mean someone needs to do better to live in sunny spain
