Pillow recommendations

Someone please tell me which pillow I need to NOT wake up with neck pain. For context, I’m a side sleeper, no other issues (sleep apnea, etc), I just need some recommendations from other people who’ve solved this. Thanks in advance
Mediocre-Victory-565@reddit
Pillow Cube literally changed my life. I am also a side sleeper and I tried just about every pillow around. Once I found out about Pillow Cube I never looked at anything else. It's a little pricey (around $100) but totally worth it.
james02135@reddit (OP)
It’s really interesting, I’ve never seen one before. This is going to sound stupid, but the shape isn’t uncomfortable?
HookersForJebus@reddit
I got a big ass memory foam one from TJ Maxx. It has small pieces of foam inside so I can re-fluff it every now and then.
james02135@reddit (OP)
My fear about the memory foam is it getting too warm through the night
Macro_Machines@reddit
"Elviros Cervical Memory Foam Pillow" from Amazon goes on sale for $20 every now and again. Wife steals it from me all the time.
james02135@reddit (OP)
Does the memory foam get too warm though?
NonCorporealEntity@reddit
I am extremely particular about my pillows. I get bad headaches from certain pillows. Ive tried every kind from expensive feather to high end memory foam.
No pillow compared to the one linked below. Sleep Comfort Australian wool pillows. They used to be at bed bath and beyond. Can't find them locally anymore though. My current pillow is going over 10 years now. I've tried replacing it but always just go back. It just gets a bleach wash every couple of months to keep it fresh.

Ooh…this looks really good, will see if I can find a shop to ship it here
Transplanted_Cactus@reddit
I've spent thousands on pillows. I wish I had the answer. I'll get a new one, it'll work okay for a few weeks or months, then I'm back to square one. And I sure as hell can't afford a new pillow every month.
This style has worked the best for me so far:
HOMCA Memory Foam Cervical Pillow, 2 in 1 Ergonomic Contour Orthopedic Pillow for Neck Pain, Contoured Support Pillows for Side Back Stomach Sleepers https://a.co/d/8f3JJkS
james02135@reddit (OP)
Was the memory foam too warm though?

The type of pillow you need will be highly dependent on the type of mattress you have.
For example, I have a Purple mattress, which means when I sleep on my side my shoulder and other pressure points sink into the mattress. With that sleeping position, a normal side-sleeper pillow, which tends to be thicker and firmer, doesn’t work.
I ended up trying the Purple Harmony pillow and it works great for me. It didn’t get great reviews but like I said, the pillow needs to pair correctly with the sleepers size and position and the mattress.
james02135@reddit (OP)
Very fair point, the mattress is new (~3 years), and is fairly firm so when I sleep, my shoulder doesn’t sink into the mattress very much at all.
FyberPunk@reddit
I use a Sutera ergonomic pillow. It makes me sweat but keeps me from crumpling my neck onto my chest. I like the shape, but I can’t recommend it.
In the market for a new side sleeper pillow that’s washable.
james02135@reddit (OP)
Yeah, the other issue is that my wife is like sleeping next to a radiator, so something cooling would be best for me
Hurt2039@reddit
Im so glad you posted this because im now in the market for a new pillow. I’ve had the same Sertapedic Copperloft pillow I picked up at Walmart 15yrs ago & for the past couple of months I’ve been waking up with really bad neck pain & tension headaches. I LOVED this pillow, I took it with me when I traveled.
james02135@reddit (OP)
I’ll do a follow up once I get a pillow and let everyone know what the story is
blueberry_pancakes14@reddit
Side sleeper as well, sleep like a rock, no issues, just want to be comfortable. I love this thing. I have the Queen size at home, and (car) travel with a standard (smaller) sized one.
james02135@reddit (OP)
This looks pretty good, and decent enough price
fizzlebottom@reddit
As counterintuitive as it may seem, I'm gonna suggest a super thin latex pillow.
I got an Elite Rest Slim Sleeper that's only 2.75" thick and combining that with yoga and stretching has wiped my neck problems off the map.
I might even go for one of their thinner ones soon.
james02135@reddit (OP)
I started Pilates last week and I’m trying to do some yoga/stretching at least twice a day at home. I just want this to go away
WeWander_@reddit
I've been trying to find a comfortable pillow for years and have gone through dozens of them with no luck. It fucking sucks.
JoeN0t5ur3@reddit
Coop FTW! I've tried so many and this one is great
FunksGroove@reddit
My wife and I have this one. It’s great.
Basscheck@reddit
Just ordered a new one!
sjd208@reddit
Same! I swear one week after I turned 40 my neck started to hurt. Silk (not satin, actually silk pillow cases have also been a game changer (and great for your hair and skin, esp if you have curly hair).
IAmNotAPersonSorry@reddit
I got one of these and I sleep so well with it. My partner tried it out for two minutes and then immediately ordered one for himself. It’s the most comfortable and supportive pillow I have ever used.
james02135@reddit (OP)
This one? https://coopsleepgoods.com/products/the-original-pillow?variant=43955793231925
JoeN0t5ur3@reddit
Yup you can add or remove filling to customize
james02135@reddit (OP)
Nice…at this point I’d be happy if it repeatedly punched me in the face so I’d pass out and get a decent sleep
JoeN0t5ur3@reddit
I feel this comment.
Kaa_The_Snake@reddit
I just spent like $130 on a real quality feather pillow (from Macy’s) and honestly couldn’t be happier. I’ve had the buckwheat filled pillow, solid foam, shredded foam, combination, combo feathers and foam core, gel…I’ve tried everything. I really like my actual feather pillow. Have had it for two weeks.
fairlyaveragetrader@reddit
You ever play one of those video games without looking at any hints when you're trying to find something or solve a puzzle and you wonder around for hours and hours and days and days and eventually you find it
I just brought that up because that's what you're going to be doing with the pillow 😂
james02135@reddit (OP)
That’s how I live my life
fairlyaveragetrader@reddit
😂👍
Ferme_La_Bouche@reddit
A mattress-foam pillow from a mattress store. Bonus: it's a cooling one. Simetimes I switch to a MyPillow that I removed some stuffing out of. Also, elevating the head of the bed seems to help.
pupee77@reddit
I've settled on an XL buckwheat pillow. The liner is filled with buckwheat husks. It feels like a beanbag. The first night I remember thinking it felt hard, but I've used it going on 4 years now. It cradles the position of your head and doesn't go flat
james02135@reddit (OP)
I’ve seen this on some websites and was too scared to ask
Roscoe_P_Trolltrain@reddit
I just got my buckwheat pillow two nights ago and have been looking to tell anyone who will listen. A timely post. It’s of course not soft but it’ll just lock your head in place and support the whole thing. My wife has had neck pain for a while and loves hers cane almost cried the first night she put her head on it.
CreepyDough@reddit
This is the answer. You will not regret it.
EastCoastJohnny@reddit
I’m a side sleeper looking for something too this sounds great thanks. i feel like if as an added bonus it would be fun to make sleeping on buckwheat husks part of your personality around the office.
ThisIsADaydream@reddit
I came here to say this! The buckwheat pillow has changed our lives. My husband had especially awful neck pain, and now his neck is pain-free, and he has more mobility. He's been using this pillow for about 3 months.
JoeN0t5ur3@reddit
These proved to be too loud for me to sleep on. I tried the one with beads too but similarly it was just too loud. They are highly recommended tho
pupee77@reddit
I haven't been bothered by the sound beyond the first few days of using it. Although another negative is if you travel with your own pillow, beware, this is a heavy MoFo. I always pack mine on trips and my husband curses me for packing on another 10lbs of dead weight in my suitcase
JoeN0t5ur3@reddit
I recently say last two years starting traveling with a pillow and highly recommended !
KittysDavid@reddit
I've been on the train for 10+ years now
I have a second to sort of lay on

I bought one of these stupid things yesterday. It should arrive Friday. I have had a lot of trap, neck and shoulder pain lately and now I have tennis elbow and it's been hard to get to sleep at night. If I have success I'll report back, but yeah... \~$300 for a fucking pillow is a little tough to swallow.
tgold77@reddit
I was using this sort of crescent shaped pillow that was perfect for me and my wife threw it away. But I’ve never been able to find another one like it. Basically it would go under the head and most of the way down my torso, but still sticking out enough that when I rolled over to the other side there was enough sticking out to grab it and pull it into the same position on the other side.
5pens@reddit
Latex foam pillow is the only kind I use.
RacerGal@reddit
My husband is a side sleeper and loves his PillowCube
Darkest_Rahl@reddit
Oh, I'm saving this thread. I'm on my 5th pillow and still can't wake up without neck pain.
Sl0ppyOtter@reddit
I got a latex pillow several years ago and haven’t looked back. Side sleeper. They never lose their shape and stay cool.
Perfect-Agent-2259@reddit
I absolutely adore my latex pillow and can't sleep without it. I acquired one in 2001 when my roommate moved out of our dorm, and finally thought to replace it about five years ago. It was difficult to find a new one (I tried about 7 other pillows in the meantime), but I'm so glad I never gave up and finally got one.
Sl0ppyOtter@reddit
Pretty sure I just got mine on Amazon. There’s a few different styles. Ones that have a shape that’s supposed to be more supportive or whatever or just plain pillow-shaped ones that look like a piece of foam with holes in it. That’s the style I have.
vajrasana@reddit
Im a big fan of the tempurpedic memory foam pillows…they are a bit pricey, but I’ll never go back. Just be sure to air them out for a few days before you use them because the smell when they are new can be a little strong.
james02135@reddit (OP)
Good shput
ILikeToEatTheFood@reddit
I got this 3 pillow-in-1 down alternate doodad from the 'zon. You can take each layer out and they bunch up and fold and do all the things I need my pillow to do. I'm sold on the multi-layer option.
Arralyn82@reddit
I've been using the same Purple pillow for about five years, and it's great. It was a little too thin for side sleeping, so I have a second flat pillow under it. Prior to buying it, i spent thousands on all kinds of different pillows and contraptions. My only complaint is it can get hot.
ladyinwaiting123@reddit
I am super picky about my pillow. I finally found the solution because you can adjust the firmness with this one, AND it never flattens out because there is a mixture (not all memory foam!!!) of memory foam and other fibers!! I promise you'll be happy with this one!! It's called The Easy Breather by Nest Bedding
rick912@reddit
Purple pillow. Such a game changer we bought the travel versions.
Avertr@reddit
This cervical neck pillow.
WilliamMcCarty@reddit
This has been great for my neck.
james02135@reddit (OP)
Oh interesting, haven’t ever seen a pillow like that before
FitzInPDX@reddit
OP, unsure if this appeals or not, but as a side sleeper whose ears hate being compressed against the pillow all night, I got a couple of these side sleeper pillows with little cavities for your ears and I love them. Haven't had neck pain with the regular pillow nor with the mini travel version. Good luck on your search!
WilliamMcCarty@reddit
I was sceptical, sqaure pillow and all, but it's been great. There's more expensive "nicer" sqaure pillows but this is a good, affordable alternative.
Parwaiz@reddit
Definitely go for Yippo Labs cervical pillow... I've had them for months now, started off with pretty bad neck pain and it was pretty much gone within a few weeks. I even got my wife one too and she absolutely loves it. Definitely my best recent purchase by far.
pedestal_of_infamy@reddit
The type of pillow thst is stuffed w shredded memory foam that you can add to or take out is the only thing that has been remotely comfortable for me.
james02135@reddit (OP)
This seems to be the right answer
DocBEsq@reddit
A pillow filled with shredded memory foam. I got one a few years ago and find it hard to sleep on anything else now. Very moldable, not too firm. I pretty much always sleep on my side and have chronic neck issues, so a good pillow is a must for me!
cats_n_tats11@reddit
I really love the original foam pillow from Tuft & Needle.
CuriousRiver2558@reddit
I have a pillow system involving 2-4 pillows. It may be your top shoulder need support while on your side. If my upper arm is at the wrong angle it pulled on my neck.
Geekboxing@reddit
We like Nest Bedding's Easy Breather shredded foam pillows.

This was going to be my suggestion. I also have a purple mattress and the accompanying purple harmony pillow and it's been great. I wouldn't have another pillow.

Coop
Buy from their website or a trusted retailer as you could get a knock-off on Amazon.
Main-Ad3654@reddit
Body pillows designed for pregnant women are perfect for side sleeping. I know quite a few people who still use them after they had their babies. Not ideal if you share a bed. I’ve been using a large memory foam body pillow which I love.
Spartan04@reddit
I’m use a memory foam pillow from Comfort Revolution that has a “cooling gel” layer on top (very nice since memory foam can sometimes get too hot). I used to use down pillows but eventually they just didn’t have enough support. The foam pillow contours itself well to me but is firm enough it doesn’t collapse like the down did.
Biggest downside for me is that being foam it’s not machine washable. It does come with a removable cover that is washable so it’s manageable with washing that. Eventually though the pillow does need to be replaced, though most of us probably keep pillows longer than we ideally should.
Muderous_Teapot548@reddit
I have three pillows I sleep with:
A down alternative side sleeper and two of these stacked on top of each other:
KLUBBSPORRE ergonomic pillow, side/back sleeper, Queen - IKEA
james02135@reddit (OP)
Wow, I definitely didn’t expect to see something from IKEA, but fair enough. Snuggle with the Hubby once in awhile 😀
Muderous_Teapot548@reddit
I seriously turned my nose up at his IKEA suggestion for our mattress. Turns out it was one of the highest rated mattresses on the market at the time. They've since discontinued it. It's going to be a sad day when we replace it in a couple of years.

Give these a try. Its not going to hurt if you're willing to pay. I like them. Buy the Coop one too. :)
HadynGabriel@reddit
Also a side sleeper- what might matter is if you also put your bottom arm/shoulder under your head.
I do and for that reason I resorted to a slimmer pillow.
Another thing to look into is how well your mattress is doing. I’m average weight but I wreck mattress springs as a side sleeper.
james02135@reddit (OP)
No, my arms are at my side for the most part or in between my knees kind of thing. My mattress is new and I love the firmness/feel of it
