ULPT: pepper spray illegal where you live? Buy wasp spray, it does pretty much the same thing, and legal to use.

Some places have laws saying you can't have knives, guns, pepper spray, tazers, etc. A way around this is just using wasp spray as it goes 10-20 feet away and causes burns and disrupts other people heavily.
Star_BurstPS4@reddit
Spraying a poison or even non poison is it's own charge in it self and it comes with jail time in most cases. Best you go back and retake the BAR exam
G-Nasty1701@reddit
I've used raid before. It blinded the person trying to rob me.
earwighoney@reddit
Don’t they give you a phaser as a constable? I feel like bug spray isn’t enough for a Jem Hadar.
JoeSicbo@reddit
As someone who is not your attorney, it usually never hurts to keep your mouth fuckin’ shut.
halflife5@reddit
Is using raid as a self defense weapon illegal?
Haircut117@reddit
No, but carrying it with that intent is.
SweetBearCub@reddit
I suppose this is why people often say that if you plan to have something like a baseball bat in your car as a defensive weapon, then you should also have a baseball glove and ball near it.
Recent-Selection-288@reddit (OP)
& remember to keep a sock on the bat so if you have to use it & the other person tries to grab it. All they'll have is a sock and you'll still have the bat
Silly-Wi11y@reddit
If you’re swinging soft enough for someone to grab the sock, you’re fucked anyhow.
Recent-Selection-288@reddit (OP)
It's a copypasta

Some of the worst advice I've ever heard.
DisposableJosie@reddit
Plus when they grab the sock and make a "Dobby is freeee" quip, you'll feel better about thumping them with the bat.
Possible_Bullfrog844@reddit
But the sock is what I carry my batteries in
Hippogriffstorm@reddit
In the same vein, I often times have a full set of golf clubs in my car. Not for self defense, I actually play. But an iron could cause some serious damage if I need to defend myself
cyrusthemarginal@reddit
Best to keep a can by the front door for "wasps"
Loki11100@reddit
Or not by the front door, that is legit the absolute worst place to keep a weapon for home defense...
hectorxander@reddit
No it is a federal offense, outside of self defense that is proportional, it is a felony to use pesticides in an unapproved manner.
Hezakai@reddit
All of which goes out the window if the actions are legally qualified self defense.
hopesanddreams3@reddit
"but i was getting rid of a pest!"
JoeSicbo@reddit
I’ve said this before on here and once again .It’s the CIVIL TRIAL you gotta worry about.
cyrusthemarginal@reddit
That's why you fear for your life, no civil trial.
PM_ME_YOUR_BIG_DOG@reddit
Depends on the circumstance. is shooting someone illegal? Usually yes but if you're in fear or your life and have valid proof of that then usually you're good. The NRA teaches people to "finish" a situation, dead people can't talk and your chances of prosecution are much lower.
SellingCoach@reddit
The NRA does not teach people to "finish" anything. They teach people to shoot to stop a threat.
Source: I was an NRA Instructor for 5 years.
SpicyAR15@reddit
The NRA doesn’t teach people to “finish” a situation, with a subtext of killing them to lower your chance of prosecution. They teach shooting to “stop the threat”, meaning you are not shooting to wound, nor are you shooting to kill… you are shooting with the intention of making the active threat cease the activities that warrant you shooting them and then ceasing fire when that goal is achieved.
logic_is_a_fraud@reddit
Seems like kill is the way to stop a threat.
Or do they teach warning shots?
SpicyAR15@reddit
Killing is definitely a decisive way to stop the threat.
However, if you’re about to get murdered and you shoot and graze the would-be murderer on the toe or even miss, and that causes them to stop the attempted murdering, you successfully stopped the threat and should cease shooting.
Generally center of mass shooting is taught because it’s the best combination of being effective at stopping someone while also being a reasonably sized target that could be targeted while under duress. Head shots would have a higher fatality and instant stoppage rate but a lower percentage of success. The ultimate survival of the attacker isn’t really factored into the decision.
If warning shots really worked effectively, I’m sure they would teach those. Most classes I’ve taken actually had a pretty big emphasis on using less-lethal means of defense like pepper spray.
PM_ME_YOUR_BIG_DOG@reddit
Bro you literally reiterated yourself. Stop a threat, shoot to kill? Is there a difference when production comes in?
Acceptable_Swan7025@reddit
And that is why the NRA is a horrific, crappy organization that has done quite a lot to hurt people, and diminish the quality of life for all americans.
DramaticCoat7731@reddit
In this case they are correct though, a dead assailant means only one side of the story gets heard, and since LEO/DA types love charging people this is the safest route to go in self defense.
PM_ME_YOUR_BIG_DOG@reddit
Again I want to reiterate, this is not my belief. This is how we've gotten to this point in society. Everyone is allowed to disagree or agree. Just trying to help people reason with this backwards bullshit. An informed person can make decisions/beliefs for themselves. ☮️🌈😎
PM_ME_YOUR_BIG_DOG@reddit
I'm not disagreeing with you. Just pointing it out. There's quite a bit that goes into responsible gun ownership, shame majority of people can't understand that. Should old people have to retest for a divers license? Yes, should older gun owners have to go retest the pistol/firearm Course? Yes. There's quite a few things we could do to help with responsibility but this won't happen because "MUHHH FEEDUMMMMS"
thundrbud@reddit
Yes. It literally says so on the can. Also, it's not effective on humans, the can is huge compared to pepper spray, and it's really not much cheaper than real pepper spray
TheLandOfConfusion@reddit
The prompt is literally about things you can use in places where pepper spray is illegal… not what might be cheaper than pepper spray
thundrbud@reddit
I was replying to a comment:
"Is using raid as a self defense weapon illegal?"
The answer is yes.
I know reading can be hard sometimes.
NekoBerry420@reddit
I would feel bad permanently blinding someone even if they were a criminal. Not that I can judge you if that's what you had available, but if you purposely carried that around to cripple potential criminals that's pretty fucked up
Kotja@reddit
So they better should make mace legal then.
I_Dont_Like_it_Here-@reddit
Well, you are around a bunch of people wanting unethical solutions, this is to be expected
NekoBerry420@reddit
More than unethical, It's also illegal to use poison against human beings.
HarambeMarston@reddit
So you suggest we just throw confetti at the person using force to rob us? After giving them safety glasses, of course.
AK_Ogre@reddit
No, but don't give blind mugger the ability to take you to court for damages and take everything you own.
HarambeMarston@reddit
That’s what the safety glasses are for, duh.

Bruhwutsthat@reddit
That won't stop a crackhead with a knife.
NekoBerry420@reddit
Yes it will. Do you know what a dry fire extinguisher does? The powder will blind you and make it hard as fuck to breathe
shellshock8393@reddit
It’s also illegal (and unethical) to mug people, and I promise you I care more about my property than some mugger’s eyesight, so you can bet if I had raid he’s 100% getting blasted in the face and I couldn’t possibly give less of a fuck if he ever sees again because his dumbass decisions led to that point.
I_Dont_Like_it_Here-@reddit
Yeah I mean illegality and a lack of ethics go hand in hand really
AustinC1296@reddit
You forfeit your right to choose whether my form of available self defense is "ethical" the second you attempt to inflict bodily harm upon me. Fuck off with your logic
Dark_Tony_Shalhoub@reddit
I’m with you. This sub is full of a bunch of self-important roleplayers who do nothing more than imagine scenarios in which they “win” arguments and punish their enemies for great justice, who are likely too meek to actually disagree with a human in person and have an extremely exaggerated perception and response to the injustices inflicted upon them.
Just like that guy from office space that burned down the building and stole a check for millions because someone borrowed his stapler
abitchyuniverse@reddit
Luckily I don't go around trying to mug or attack people
NekoBerry420@reddit

NekoBerry420@reddit
Why are you people this fucking moronic?

LYSF_backwards@reddit
A person is getting attacked and you are saying they can't use certain methods to defend themself. You are defending the attackers. Get fucked. The attacker deserves the wrath of whatever the victim has at hand.
BiggusDickus-@reddit
Perhaps you should think about the fact that "robbing" is not always what happens in these situations. Frequently people are not just robbed, but they are rapped, killed, critically wounded, etc...
Almost all personal robberies involve a very real, and credible, threat of violence. That absolutely opens the door to me defending myself with equal or greater force.
When someone is threatening to harm you like this, then they have surrendered all right to their own safety. That's just how civilization works. Deal with it.
yeaguy1time@reddit
Yep. Bullet through the heart or bug spray in the eyes. Idgaf about them at that point, and yes they are now considered bugs to me. Vile creatures that can be treated with disdain
yeaguy1time@reddit
Anyone willing to rob another person is opening them up to any kind of retaliation. Including bug poison, if they made better choices they won’t be permanently fucked up :)
synthetic_medic@reddit
Why is poison special?
NekoBerry420@reddit
BECAUSE ITS ILLEGAL AND INHUMANE. How is this a hard concept to understand?
Imaginary-Ad-6061@reddit

ivebeencloned@reddit
Victimizing people so the criminal can steal from is unethical and inhumane to the victim. Self-defense is a natural law practiced by every mammal but the po-liars don't let us do it.
JeremyThaFunkyPunk@reddit
So, like, unethical?
synthetic_medic@reddit
But other weapons are fine? I don’t get the distinction between spraying your attacker versus stopping them with a gun, knife, or stungun.
HighVulgarian@reddit
Do you have any alternative recommendations? Is it better to use my hands to blind someone or worse, because that is what would happen. There are people who can’t defend themselves, i guess they’re just shit out of luck. Looks like you’re just a bitch who say nuh-uh without any practical advice. Boo-hoo if the criminal gets hurt, they shouldn’t have fucked around in the first place.
And the irony of you calling people morons because you believe you’re making a moot point, I hope you get attacked

It does matter in the sense of "is this law more helpful or harmful to society". Yea, you're pretty much scum if you're mugging people but permanently disabling them probably won't get them further away from a life of crime, although it may make them worse at it.
byGenn@reddit
Ehh, I wouldn’t feel too guilty. Been mugged at gun point twice and I wouldn’t really feel bad in any way if they ended up blinded, or worse.
ChefArtorias@reddit
I think you misunderstood my comment.
As the victim you do what you need to survive. In preparing for potentially being a victim you prep for that survival while operating within the law. If they outlaw mace and you replace it with Raid, which is actually more damaging to the eyes, (speaking hypothetically, I have no idea which would cause more damage) then that person just became permanently blinded unnecessarily because you could've defended yourself equally well with the mace.
This imo is not a very high level of foresight and a situation I would expect lawmakers to anticipate before they outlaw something specifically designed for self defense.
The_Box_muncher@reddit
You definitely need to be able to see in order to mug people. So Id say its now 200% harder for them to mug and rob.

Can't buy pepper spray in the UK. Only problem is if you are stopped and the police find you down a dark alley, in winter, looking shifty with a can of wasp spray in your pocket they will see it as an offensive weapon just the same. But have it in the house in your usual place with all the other useful stuff and just happened to grab it when you saw the burglar? Law is a lot more open to that.
edman007-work@reddit
Yup, exactly. Pepper spray is spray that's intended for self defense, and possession of it for the purpose of self defense is legal in many areas. In most parts of the world bear spray is legal, but the label will say not for self defense against people, and it wouldn't be legal to carry in a city. There are a whole bunch of things that fall into that bucket, raid, acid, boiling water, etc. They are legal to purchase, and if someone was attacking you, it would generally be ok to pick it up and use it as self defense if you feared for your life, but it wouldn't be legal to carry for self defense.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
I think in the home or even car, here, I'd go for something like a rounders bat. Keep it with the ball and bases, you can have a fun game in the garden or in the park. And bash some skulls if required too. An American style baseball bat may be a bit unwieldy, and does stand out more as a weapon than a sporting item.
Empty_Mulberry9680@reddit
I have heard (although haven’t confirmed) that if you get pulled over and have just a baseball bat in your car it’s considered a weapon, but if you have balls and a mitt it’s considered sports equipment. So if you want to carry a bat, get the other stuff too.
intdev@reddit
It's literally just based on your (stated) intent, and whether the police believe you. The more reasonable and likely it is, and the more evidence you have to back it up, the more likely they are to believe you.
I once carried a kukri (Nepalese machete) on the Underground. It was completely legal because I was genuinely transporting it from one valid location to another, but I still wrapped it up and buried it at the bottom of my bag so that no police officer could accuse me of having it "to hand", ready to use.
Jonty_Lowstar@reddit
This is it
I play Airsoft so regularly transport a 1:1 replica of an AK74. In a case, in the boot, with a booking confirmation for my game on my emails.
Only thing that gets you in hot water immediately is you have one of the banned weapons.
COINTELPRO-Relay@reddit
Many countries have laws that are in essence " weapons of intent or opportunity" laws. Everything is a weapon at the right moment and with the specific intent. A rock, a wood branch, screwdriver, butter knife, car, hairspray, etc. To stay legal you just need logical justified context.
nowenknows@reddit
I can’t speak for anywhere else. But in Texas as far as I can remember, your car is an extension of your home. You can carry a firearm in your car even without an LTC (license to carry) which allows you to conceal on your body. But you don’t even need that anymore in this state. Anyone over 21 can.
But then again, it’s Texas. Not a surprise to anyone really.
Alcarain@reddit
Most states in the USA have laws like these. Texas is especially accommodating, but even in liberal states, it is legal to defend your home with a gun. (In certain states that might be a bolt action or fixed mag rifle... lol but it's still a gun.
Orpheus6102@reddit

Alcarain@reddit
Wouldn't be legal to carry for self defense? Lol, excuse me, what?
If some jackass wants to hurt me, I should be free to use any sort of force to defend myself. Lethal force included. What legislature makes pepper spray illegal?
FunnyObjective6@reddit
It's hilarious that OP thinks you have plausible deniability for that. Doubt it's legal here to "take care of" a wasp nest on public property even. Not to mention OP said "legal to use", using it to me sounds like stopping an attacker, I really don't think it's legal to do that. Sure a judge might side with you if you survived a clear attack, but the same could be said for a fucking gun despite it being clearly illegal here.
justgivemedamnkarma@reddit
Why cant you have pepper spray in the uk wtf
Federal-Context-1116@reddit
You can’t have anything that you intend to use to cause harm. That includes self defence.
Carry an apple to throw at an attacker? Same crime. Feather? Yep. Coin? Illegal.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Because it is actually more commonly used as an offensive weapon.
palehorse95@reddit
I can't imagine living where every form or possible self protection is denied to me under penalty of law, while criminals are free to be criminals and the police and politicians stroll around with all the guns and tear gas they can carry.
No_Sugar8791@reddit
Lol.
Criminals do not carry guns here unless they're actually intending to hit someone. Getting caught with an unlicensed gun, which is proven to never been fired, will still earn you 5 years.
Also, neither police nor politicians have guns or tear gas (police do have tasers).
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Are criminals free to be criminals? It means they can't walk around with guns, knives and pepper spray either. May want to check the gun death rates by country.
dannysmackdown@reddit
At least it's something. I don't know why people aren't allowed to defend themselves.
terryjuicelawson@reddit

TheOlSneakyPete@reddit
As an American, this is absolutely ludicrous to me. Not being able to own something to defend yourself? Do Brits not have pocket knives?

stools_in_your_blood@reddit
NAL but I think it in the UK legal to have stuff in your home which you fully intend to be used as self-defence weaponry. But it has to be legal to own in the first place, and you can't take it outside (with the intent of using it for self-defence, that is).
So you might not even need the "just happened to grab the wasp spray" narrative; "yes officer I keep the wasp spray there for the purpose of applying reasonable force to a burglar" might be technically within the law, although I expect they would make a meal out of it in court. Again, NAL.
WhatYouLeaveBehind@reddit
I believe you're incorrect on that. Premeditated isn't self defense, you intended to cause harm.
It's the reason it's not legal to keep a baseball bat next to your bed.
If you happened to grab one out of your cupboard on the way downstairs though, that's potentially different
stools_in_your_blood@reddit
Oh OK, didn't know that. Do you have a source for the thing about not being allowed to keep a baseball bat next to the bed? I'm curious now.
WhatYouLeaveBehind@reddit
https://www.gov.uk/reasonable-force-against-intruders#:~:text=You%20can%20use%20reasonable%20force,an%20object%20as%20a%20weapon
Having a premeditated weapon would definitely fall into the later category and result in prosecution.
You also need to prove the use of force must be proportionate to the threat. It's harder to do this if you've already selected a weapon.
Any use of force has to be justified.
Shrekquille_Oneal@reddit
absolutely insane to an American, lol. Being expected to make rational decisions and give half a shit about a home intruders life while you are actively fear for your own is kinda sick, ngl. WhatYouLeaveBehind@reddit
It really isn't.
The entire US Military Doctrine is built on the concept of Proportion Response. It isn't a foreign concept to the USA.
You shouldn't be entitled to go beyond what you need to do in order to be safe. Beyond that is entirely unreasonable and I justified.
Kinda sounds like you do, ngl
Point proven
Shrekquille_Oneal@reddit
Fuck you for that.
Now let me tell you a story. I had a friend, we'll call him Tom. Tom and his wife lived in an apartment almost identical to the one I'm sitting in right now, maybe half a mile from my exact location. Tom was dirt poor, and didn't really have anything of value in his place, but that didn't matter much, because one day two guys with masks and guns kicked the door down, pistol whipped the two of them, sexually assaulted his unconscious wife, and stole their TV. That's it, all that for a fucking tv. Genuine clockwork orange type of shit.
Tom's wife ended up having a brain bleed from the pistol whipping and, as a result, suffers from severe impairment of motor, cognitive, and speech function to this day. Both of them were in their late 50s/ early 60s, mind you, and their attackers were young men with guns. They had no "designated weapon" in the house, nothing to protect themselves or even realistically try, and regardless of how things could've gone had they had something like a gun, the reality is they had no chance and those men could've easily killed them if they wanted to, or even accidentally.
So, sorry. Call me bloodthirsty, but if either of those guys who kicked down an obviously poor older couples door and beat them severely for no real reason had died that day, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. I'm not trying to imply they should've executed them point blank in their living room or anything like that, but saying you can't have a "designated weapon" is absolute bullshit when shit like this happens every. Single. Day.
WhatYouLeaveBehind@reddit
Thanks buddy.
Clearly you failed to understand the point. I'll apologise for your ignorance on your behalf.
I will 👍
You may not understand why, but the rest of the world does. It's okay that you don't understand. I don't think you ever will.
Nevermind04@reddit
If you actually read about "proportional responses" from the US military, you'll see that this is actually a foreign concept to the USA.
The US government has a habit of naming things the opposite of what they actually are, like Citizens United which funnels huge amounts of corporate money into politics, thus depriving individual citizens of their political voices. Or the Clear Skies Act, which would have allowed 42 million additional tons of air pollution from mega-corporations. Or the Healthy Forests Initiative, which allowed forestry companies to level forests to the ground and destroy entire ecosystems instead of selectively cutting mature trees.
WhatYouLeaveBehind@reddit
Just because they don't follow it, doesn't make it a foreign concept.
In either case, a proportion response is all that's required for self defense.
Beyond that it's no longer defense.
It's fine if you believe you should be able to attack your attacker, but let's not call it defense.

Another thing to consider is that it can kill someone. It's just a very dilute version of nerve gas used by the military.
MorroKlomp@reddit
OR, you just carry around a wasps nest.
noobnoobthedestroyer@reddit
It’s insane to me that pepper spray is illegal in a lot of places
TacitRonin20@reddit
It's ridiculous. The whole point of it is to be a weapon that is non-lethal and doesn't cause permanent damage.
I_Have_No_Family_69@reddit
The whole point is that its intended to be a weapon that is used to harm other people. It has a high collateral damage effect in crowded places, contrary to popular belief it CAN kill people and lastly it has a high plausible deniability in investigations "officer this is pepper spray, its just for self defence." also people are idiots and don't know how to use pepper spray.
TacitRonin20@reddit
All of those things are larger issues with most improvised weapons than with pepper spray except for collateral damage. Someone is more likely to be seriously hurt if the victim is required to use bare hands or whatever bludgeon is within arms reach.
It is hands down the best non-lethal weapon and, while very capable defensively isn't often used offensively. The only reason to use it offensively is malice since it's hard to rape, rob, or otherwise victimize someone who's covered in pepper spray. The sort of people who would use it maliciously would be fine using more lethal and damaging alternatives.
The biggest thing is that pepper spray is effective. Taking that away leaves people far more vulnerable. While a weapon of opportunity like a hammer can be more lethal, a weaker person probably will still lose to a larger person and be far more injured due to the presence of a weapon. Unarmed, they are simply victimized outright without much of a fight. With pepper spray they can run away and nobody dies.
hitemlow@reddit
In some areas it's just classified as a dangerous/deadly weapon and requires you to acquire a CCW beforehand. The same CCW permit that entitles you to carry a firearm....so just carry the more effective and versatile tool.

There is no U.S. jurisdiction that requires a permit to carry a small canister of pepper spray concealed on or about the person

Ok_Choice9482@reddit
No offense. BUT you must be aware, the misunderstanding of this will get you or somebody killed, if you think wasp spray will work for defending you.
Wasp spray kills bugs. However, permethrin, prallethrin, and other bug killers can just about be used as bug repellent on your clothes. No damage. They are literally manufactured into clothes as bug repellent, not that it is completely harmless but it WILL NOT do a damn thing if somebody is attacking you.
Mace works because it is excruciatingly painful. It forces the eyes of your attacker to shut because of pain and inflammation. It is worse than soap or shampoo. Bug spray is not really as bad as mace because sometimes a little goes in your eye if you spray a bees nest. If you think about an enraged driver in a road rage confrontation, who is irrational and can't be avoided, bug spray will do more harm than good, not desist their attack and allow you to escape.
If you are against an enraged driver in a violent road rage confrontation, or a person on performance enhancers who does not feel pain, or an animal that is aggressive and in the process of an attack, then guess what - you need a different weapon.
In a confrontation you can't escape, you could need a weapon that works, like a gun, a walking cane, a stun cane, mace, a crossbow, a knife, just about anything. You could even be injured, and if you don't have some way of protecting yourself, then you're hurt. If you can't have a weapon because of local laws, then you are in a tricky situation. Does the risk justify your intent? In the eyes of the law, it doesn't really matter what causes you to feel safe. The law is the law. You have to think about how to BE safe, not FEEL safe, and I won't really sit here thinking up different weapons for you to smuggle around. I am a gun owning American and it is convenient for me to walk around with a pistol. It saved the life of my dog, who was nearly bitten by a 4.5 foot (1.37 meter) rattlesnake.
But now you know! And you will not waste time nor will you wind up in a bad situation because you think bug spray is a defense of any sort.
lock11111@reddit
Bear spray or dog spray works too. We have alot of kids bear macing people to rob them though.
Flossthief@reddit
Yeah there's a massive difference in spraying OC in someone's eyes vs spraying actual poison in their eyes
One is a spicy plant that's been weaponized; the other is spraying poison into someones eyes
Also random bug spray to the eyes is nothing compared to being properly sprayed with oc spray
This is only an unethical life pro tip because anyone trying it will get hurt and therefore giving said advice is unethical
LongHairedKnight@reddit
In Canada it’s legal to carry pepper spray if it is designed for and intended to be used against animals like dogs, coyotes, bears.
OF COURSE I would NEVER carry pepper spray with the intent of using it on a human being! That’s illegal!
Hypothetically, if someone WERE to carry pepper spray with no intent to use it on a human being, but their safety/life was to be threatened and in a panic they used the pepper spray without thinking… charges may be dropped against them. If not, I’m sure that’s still preferable to what could have happened had they not defended themselves.
Something to think about.

Off the shelf bear spray is dangerous. 20 years ago I was in school and someone emptied a can as a prank. Not on anyone, just in the school.
A teacher who spent time in the (very large) halls facilitating evacuation had their vocal cords burned out and couldn't teach anymore.
It's very dangerous stuff.
hectorxander@reddit
? How did it harm his vocal chords? So there is more than capsaican in them, the stuff in hot peppers?
Because that doesn't do any actual damage it is just uncomfortable.

Some people are very sensitive to capsaicin and large quantities can cause chemical burns.
Latent sensitivity and inhalation can harm people.

Think of capsaicin similar to alcohol in this sense:
We consume in amounts that are safe but still have an edge. Too much can cause injury, even more can cause permanent injury.
Capsaicin has a stronger effect on vulnerable areas like the eyes, nose, mouth (and genitalia… dont ask how i know)
Bear spray is designed to be potent enough for a whole ass bear. And spray strong and fast enough to ward off a bear in an emergency. Using it as intended still needs care, or you can really hurt yourself. And thats OUTDOORS.
Imagine all that in a non ventilated space
Capsaicin can be dangerous. Putting too much in your lunch inorder to ward off lunch thieves at work is infamously considered poisoning

Odd_System_89@reddit
I mean, pepper spray and tasers are "less lethal" not "nonlethal" they can outright kill someone if certain conditions are meant. If you wear contacts, getting hit with the mist ones can actually cause damage to your eyes as the chemical can get between the contact and your cornea. Still though, pepper spray of all forms is not nearly as bad as getting stabbed or shot.

Yeah, people forget this in Canada and feel you can't use a weapon for defense. You can, right up to and including firearms. You just have to be able to explain why you had the item in your possession prior to using it as a "weapon of opportunity" when defending yourself, and why the use of that item was reasonable and proportional to the level of threat you faced. Police may still charge you, but if your explanation is rock solid and supported by evidence a court won't convict you.

The_Synthax@reddit
Sure, if you enjoy prison. You just aren’t allowed to summarily execute someone because they broke into your house to steal some shit. You will still often be met with a forceful response if you break in with a weapon. Big difference between “the intruder was trying to kill me, so I had to kill him to save my own life/my family members’ lives” and “guy tried to steal my TV so I murdered him for daring to try.” Those who can justify the use of deadly force are not punished for it, those who cannot, are. Same as in many US states. And most countries.
KevinShift@reddit
How naive, you don't know a person's motives for breaking into your house and especially if you have family in there that's the only thing that's going to be on your mind, not you assessing whether or not they're there to steal your TV, they broke into your home which is your safe space. You have absolutely no idea what they could do to you or your family and trying to find out is beyond stupid. And you say many US States when the majority of US States have castle doctrine and allow you to protect yourself inside your home, same with States that do not have castle doctrine they have a duty to retreat in which their house is considered the last line and thus in the majority of cases across the United States you would be legally seen favorably in a self defense case.

I don't remember the outcome, but it's absolute bullshit to have to go through that.

RudeSituation79@reddit
Here's how you get round that explanation...again, gotta be the right situation and circumstances. The criminal code actually has provision for people to be able to have a loaded firearm stored accessibly in wilderness areas for wildlife defense. It's true, I looked it up, and ran it by the Sargeant at my local detachment. Of course, depends where you live, but I'm covered.
syzamix@reddit
Need to know more about what happened. If a burglar shows up to my house, my responsibility is to keep me and my family safe. It is very easy to achieve by running away and calling the police.
If instead, I decide to go Rambo, fight the burglar and then after immobilizing them, decide to shoot their head for retribution, that's a crime.
Do you have a link with details? How can I be sure that it's not your creative interpretation of what happened? Plenty of examples in Canada where legitimate use of force for self defense was not prosecuted.
Big-D_OdoubleG@reddit
I dont agree with your logic on running is the best defense, but I see where youre coming from in saying that the details of the story could be manipulated
Prometheus188@reddit
Statistically, both in terms of evolution and in terms of human vs human conflicts, running away is overwhelmingly offers the best chance of survival. That’s just a fact. I’m not against killing people who break into your house to attack you, but facts are facts even if you don’t like them.
Big-D_OdoubleG@reddit
It's not that I "don't like the facts". I'm just considering 2 things: intentions of the offender, and situations in which running is not an option. For example, I have 3 small kids. While I can run for my own life, I would be hard pressed to go up the stairs, collect all 3 kids, and then run back down with all of them while the other person is doing who knows what.
Prometheus188@reddit
Yeah obviously you can come up with situations where running away isn’t the best option, but that’s why o said that statistically it is the best option. Meaning, most of the time, it is the best option. The fact that there are some situations where fighting is better, doesn’t change the fact that statistically running away is the best option.
imDEUSyouCUNT@reddit
In terms of safety from physical injury, running is going to be the safest option by far, if that option is available to you, in the vast majority of scenarios.
Truth is most people who break into houses aren't roving gangs of murderers or prowling serial killers. When someone breaks into your home, it's overwhelmingly likely that they just want to steal your shit, and they probably think you're not even home. If you run away, they're not gonna chase you down and kill you, they're gonna run in the opposite direction, preferably with as much of your valuables as they can carry.
Personally, living in America, I own guns. And I keep one ready for home defense, because there are other factors than my own personal safety such as the safety of others in my home, of my pets, the value of items I can't afford to replace, the likelihood that a firearm stolen from my home might contribute to other more lethal crimes. That sort of thing. But I also acknowledge that by engaging with a firearm I substantially escalate the lethality of any home intruder scenario, and that the risk of the encounter turning lethal might also apply to me if things go wrong.
Big-D_OdoubleG@reddit
Very well said.
lesterbottomley@reddit
And they often are. There was a famous one in the UK a few years back where a farmer was prosecuted for shooting a burglar in his house.
People were up in arms about it largely due to how some of the press reported it. It was all defending your castle type shit.
However, he was prosecuted not for shooting him per ce, but because he:
A) shot the lad in the back as he was trying to get away. And
B) not long before he had gone into a community meeting with his shotgun loudly proclaiming "if anyone steps foot on my land I'll shoot them and shoot to kill" (or words to that effect, there had been a spare of burglaries in the area).
If the burglar was coming towards him he'd have likely not been charged.
One-Significance7853@reddit
So, no force is allowed to protect property? For example, if someone is in your garage, trying to hotwire your car, you must call the police instead of hitting or shooting them?
derickj2020@reddit
Shooting at someone steeling a car is not personal defense.
Lopsided-Amphibian90@reddit
Not Canada but this is true in several US states, you have to have a legitimate fear of your life, or in some states someone else's life. Texas, on the other end of the spectrum, allows lethal force to protect not just your own property, but anyone else's.
HamG0d@reddit

syzamix@reddit
That is the law in Canada. We value life over stuff.
In your example they are not attacking you or your family. You are not under threat. Just your property. which is insured.
I understand the anger and animal instinct but you are saying murder should be justified for x dollars which I find hard to agree with.
Let me ask you this. Would any government give death penalty for stealing a car? Nope. What type of wannabe vigilante are you? At this point I'm worried that you just want somebody to try that with your car so you have a chance to shoot someone.

I'd be shocked if thats an actual conviction and not just 'charged' or 'bullshit story'.
Theres a farmer in Canada who shot fleeing (teenagers iirc) in the back, after they tried to steal his atv.
I dont think he faced any time. There is a whole lot of bullshit stories about charges (aka ATTEMPTS to convict someone), being portrayed as convictions. Canada has some really shocking failures of the justice system, but most of the outlandish shit you see is often nonsense.
devilishlydo@reddit
The process is the punishment. If defending yourself against bogus charges costs a lot of money and destroys your reputation, ability to find work, etc for so long that nobody cares that you were right in the end, winning feels a lot like losing; and when there's no consequences for the prosecutor (and in fact there are often benefits) they have no reason to ever stop.

Jlt42000@reddit
You’ve already managed to obtain their firearm in this scenario. You were able to unarm an armed individual and then use their weapon to kill them.

pedsteve@reddit

DimensioT@reddit
No, it would not make sense.
How would a homeowner know for certain that a burglar is unarmed?
Jlt42000@reddit
Because you have their weapon pointed at them. Obviously if you think they’re about to pull another, take them out in self defense. If not you’re just murdering a home intruder.
SaiHottariNSFW@reddit
Most likely the gun was turned on the intruder during the scuffle for control of said gun. In such cases in the US, both men are considered armed, so you can be punished for shooting an unarmed assailant just because you've got more control than they do. Worth noting, this goes both ways. If you're carrying a gun for self defense and someone tries to fight you for it, they are now considered armed; Give em what they ask for, express delivered to whatever part of them you can get the muzzle pointed at.
OldPersonName@reddit
Why is the onus on the homeowner, who likely lacks training in any manner of combat, to manage the high stress, high adrenaline life or death situation that the criminals have put them all into? Any normal person's decision making and reaction time is severely affected in such a situation, and asking them to then go and make a sober real-time assessment of the intruder's intents and actions is entirely unreasonable.
Pro gun nuts imagine all kinds of rambo scenarios to justify themselves, this is like the same kind of thing but done for the opposite reason. "Nah bro you just hold them at gunpoint and if they try to skin that smokewagon you take them out bro, piece of cake bro. And if they lunge for the gun just do a spinning sidekick into their solar plexus bro, I'm a yellow belt at the strip mall taekwondo place I'll show you. Bro."
Sufficient_Effect651@reddit
This is pretty simple, and its because if you kill a person in Canada you will generally be adjudicated by society, whether it's by prosecutors who drop the case or by the courts themselves. Nobody has ever been convicted of reasonable self defense.
namerankserial@reddit
Eh, personally I think they're fine. Cite the case?
PlsNoNotThat@reddit
O fuck why? I just explain to the judge that it makes me feel like my penis is bigger so I can do things like shop at Starbucks.
RudeSituation79@reddit
Indeed. You would have to be able to explain why you had a firearm in your possession to begin with, and why the person causing the threat had the ability, intent and mobility to cause you grievous bodily harm or death. Very difficult, but not impossible. There was a case in Canada 2 years ago where a person shot an individual on their property and wasn't even charged, and I know one individual who shot an attacker in the leg with a 30-06, was charged, but the judge acquitted them.
ConsummateContrarian@reddit
There’s also the Supreme Court Case of R. v. Khill, where a guy was convicted of manslaughter for shooting a burglar in his garage.
He shot the guy because he reached for his waistband, where a knife was later found.
Saucy-Dad@reddit
Always wondered.
Hypothetically, would the best defense in Canada be to go to your 7-11 store at 3 am. Look for a teen just chilling, give him 600 for that snubhose he has 30 of. Plant said stolen gun on home invader after you take care of business? I mean hypothetically of course. Just curious if that would be enough to swing the court in your favour of using lethal force........
RudeSituation79@reddit
Oh it's a dice roll for sure. I also know a guy who got 20 years (just released) cause he also shot a neighbour on his property who had a history of making death threats against him (but I understand why he was convicted). I'll have to read R v Khill. I don't know what you do, but if it's a choice of roll the dice or risk never having the ability to roll a dice ever again, the choice is a simple one really.
Before anyone asks - I don't know why it is that I own multiple people who've shot people.
ConsummateContrarian@reddit
I’m a sports shooter in Canada, and I wouldn’t risk using my firearms in home defence, unless it was obvious the burglar was armed.
pingpongtits@reddit
If someone breaks in your house, they have a knife, and you fear for your life, can you shoot them with a bow and arrow or spear them? Would that be considered even enough, or do you have to knife fight them to defend yourself for the law to consider it reasonable force?
I'm unclear as to how you're supposed to defend yourself when someone forces their way into your house.
I mean, besides the Ontario cop that suggested leaving your car keys by the door so robbers wouldn't have to hurt you to steal your car.
ConsummateContrarian@reddit
My understanding is that if they enter you home (not a garage or shed), and are armed, you can shoot.
There was a case where a guy came home from a hunting trip and shot a guy in his house who had a bat.
The grey areas are: an unarmed intruder in your home, and an armed intruder in an outbuilding, like a garage, shed, or barn.
RudeSituation79@reddit
I'm a sports shooter and a hunter and would hope that it would go without saying that the only time a firearm could ever be used in that situation is if the threat is obviously armed and you have no other alternative. You would have to be absolutely certain of that, and you'd have to convince a court that it was the only option at that time.
deedeepancake@reddit
You have based friends. Nothing to hand your head about or make excuses. The US anyway has become a society where a large majority side with the criminals or aggressors in general. IndianaJoenz@reddit
No. Having to explain why you had a gun and why you shot someone is common sense.
Local9396@reddit
Saying “I have a gun to defend myself” would land you in jail so no not common sense
LigPaten@reddit
Gun use in self defense scenarios have to be reasonable and proportional too. If you shot someone for slapping you, you'd be in jail 9 times out of 10. You may or may not have what's called a duty to retreat (meaning you don't have to have tried to flee before using force), but it still has to be reasonable and proportional. The difference is that you are allowed to carry firearms for the self-defense if you choose to. Having to make something be a "weapon of opportunity", especially pepper spray, is unreasonable. You should never have to lie to be allowed to keep something as basic and non-lethal as pepper spray or tasers.
RudeSituation79@reddit
The key issue in Canada is that legally you can't have a firearm for personal defense (unless it's for wildlife, which is another story entirely), so you're pooched if you want to carry a firearm for protection against people.

I bought mine off of Amazon. Sabre dog spray maximum strength. Don’t get the one with the twist cap - it doesn’t spray as well. There is no tracking that I know of.
Bear spray (pepper spray) can be bought at places like MEC or Canadian Tire. But that should only be carried in the woods or other areas where bears may be. You do have to show photo ID and sign a document to buy it.

Trudouche should just stop talking really cause he doesn't speak for all of us, plus he knows zero about firearms (other than he knows that most people know nothing about them and he can use it like a wedge issue to buy votes). A firearm is a tool, and a tool can be a weapon of opportunity in a defense situation. A hammer is the same - if you were fixing a set of steps and were attacked by a man with a knife, and you hit him with a hammer...it's a tool that became a weapon of opportunity. Same scenario, but there's a break in the action snd you went into the house, grabbed a hammer and went back outside and beat the guy....you're going to jail. It's the same sort of scenario if a gun is involved.
I couldn't tell you specific cases by name. There was a guy 2 years ago in Canada that shot a violent intruder on his property and the police didn't even charge, and I do know one guy that shot an attacker, was charged, and best the charge in court...but I'm not divulging the case name cause I want you respect his privacy. It's rare in Canada, but it happens.
windex8@reddit
I don’t need names, I just wasn’t sure how it played out, and I figured you might know. I agree with everything you said, btw. Our dipshit politicians try to play the same game.
RudeSituation79@reddit
Oh I know how the second case panned out. 2 guys broke in while the guy was sleeping and attacked him in bed with a pipe and a crowbar. Somehow he ended up getting ahold of his hunting rifle, and he shot one guy in the leg. The other guy ran for it. He was charged, but he beat the charge in court. I don't know the legal wrangling and explaining that happened in court, but he was aquitted.
duffelbagpete@reddit

nachohk@reddit
They are enforcing the state monopoly on violence. The existing abusive power structures are threatened when the public is armed and unafraid to defend themselves.
FastBuffalo6@reddit
Awesome. So you can defend yourself and then maybe if you are lucky and get sympathetic prosecuters they won't charge you maybe. What a good system!
matzhue@reddit
Force equalization is important here. You can't punch someone for yelling at you, but if it's to stop them from escalating from a shove or other reasonable activities to escalate from punches then you won't face jail time. If someone reasonably acts in a way that would seriously jeopardize your health eg. Brandishing a weapon you won't face charges for meeting equal force.
tRfalcore@reddit
Just be like "I stole that gun from the criminal but he had another gun in his pocket"
Quik-Sand@reddit
Why would you even talk to the police? Let your attorney explain! Maybe it's different in Canada, I don't know.
RudeSituation79@reddit
I don't believe I said I would, more did I say other's should.
Zarobiii@reddit
I was being severely bullied once in school and feared for my safety. So I picked up a stick to carry home in case I got beaten again. Police pulled over and forced me to put the stick down or they would arrest me. “What do I do if I’m ambushed by armed bullies again” I ask? Find a stick they say, but it can’t be the one you brought with you. Stupid fucking law. In retrospect the police were shit because they didn’t even offer to drive me home or anything they just disarmed me and left me vulnerable to further bashings. Probably being arrested would have been safer for me.

hellenkellerfraud911@reddit

No, nanny state kicked in when pepper spray became illegal.
Dunno_If_I_Won@reddit
So is is punching people in the face and kicking them in the balls. But guess what? Self-defense is an affirmative defense in the US and the UK.
If you unambiguously used wasp spray or other poison in self defense, there is zero chance of being prosecuted.
OrangeJuiceKing13@reddit
It's also outright not effective. It'll annoy people more than actually cause them to stop their attack. So not only will they still continue their attack, they'll probably be more enraged, and then you could face legal issues down the road when they go blind.
Powerful_Artist@reddit
Thats kind of the whole point of 'unethical' pro tips though, if you want rational and ethical pro tips theres a subreddit for that.
sir_psycho_sexy96@reddit

Just use pepper spray.
gozer33@reddit
I was more focused on the "pro tip" side of things. I feel like those are supposed to make your life easier, not expose you to more potential consequences. As far as I know, self-defense is perfectly ethical.
kalel3000@reddit
I was about to say, wasp spray is legal to use...on wasps. Spraying chemicals in people's faces is still a crime.
Obviously if its self defense, thats different, you can use resources you have available to defend yourself within reason.
But you better make sure to only use it if youre actually in fear of your safety.
If you get too trigger happy with the wasp spray and for instance use it in a verbal argument that hasn't escalated to physical intimidation, you can get in a lot of trouble.
Of course I dont know how laws work everywhere. Where I live, pepper spray is allowed nearly everywhere unless explicitly forbidden by security checkpoints like at government buildings. So this isn't an issue.
Im just going off what Ive heard about it being illegal to use bear spray on people.

NowEndeavor@reddit
I would say that although other users posted that this spray could be considered illegal to use in the manner that OP describes, you could walk around with it without arousing suspicion which is the bigger point.
If you get caught with pepper spray, it's pepper spray. But in a life or death situation, I don't think a jury would find you guilty for using anything you happened to have on/near you, whether that be a paint brush you shove in someone's eye because you just left Home Depot or an empty glass bottle you found on the street.

Bear spray is much weaker and less potent than pepper spray. It's not meant to hurt or incapacitate bears they just have very sensitive noses and it takes less to deter them.
HPPD2@reddit
Bear spray is lower concentration and much less potent than pepper spray for self defense, it is also designed to mist into a big cloud and not as concentrated of a stream. Bears have very sensitive noses and it takes less to deter them.
edman007-work@reddit
Yup, though bear spray is just illegal pepper spray. The label on pepper spray says spray it at a bad guy, the label on bear spray says do not spray at people. So pepper spray is legal to carry for self defense, bear spray is not. Same would apply to raid, it's illegal to carry raid for self defense.
The only question is how will the police prove the intent, because that's really all that matters.
hectorxander@reddit
Police also have near unlimited discretion in deciding to arrest you in a case like that. Best case scenario you get bailed out of jail and hire a lawyer and get the charges dropped, after maybe missing work being in jail and paying thousands of dollars and having your mugshot posted online with what you were charged with.
They never post follow ups or update those mugshots either to specify the charges were dropped. Someone searches your name that mug will pop up, for years.

Active_Warning_1709@reddit
So- it does nothing similar to “pretty much the same thing”.
It causes immediate and permanent blindness, the only antidote is in a full hospital they’d have to get to, in time.
It’s not considered a non lethal self defense method, in most jurisdictions- it’s basically the same as if you had to pull a kitchen knife in self defense of your life. Whereas- pepper spray is acceptable for things like harassment or minor assault in many places, you WILL go to prison for using wasp spray the same way in those same places.
You will NOT be able to justify the use of wasp spray in response to someone punching you, as much as you could claim that it was necessary to climb on top of them and remove their eyeballs with your thumbs in response.
Just like if you HAVE to pull a gun or knife and take a life in self defense- you ARE getting taken in, you ARE likely getting some kind of charge, and you have to know that. It has to be worth it, to you,
Not like pepper gel/spray at all. The law will usually look more favorably on you grabbing whatever large blunt object is near you to beat them with, as opposed to immediately taking their eyeballs from 20ft away permanently.
You can literally wash pepper spray out with stuff at home. There is no option similar to that with wasp spray.
I keep a can in my truck- but I recognize it’s as last-resort as a literal gun, in the eyes of the law. If killing them or permanently incapacitating them isn’t a justified response to their behavior- you will be charged for using it on someone. Yes, that’s better than getting knifed a dozen times and left in the road. Of course.
But please don’t talk to people like they can use it in any similar way pepper spray can legally be used. It causes SO much more damage. May as well throw muriatic acid on someone’s face. It’s really THAT hard to justify the usage compared to pepper spray.
KilTheTransformers@reddit

Hair spray, spray-cans of adhesive/paint, and perfume can work in a pinch. An open umbrella can be used to keep someone at arm's length, bonus points if it has a metal tip you can scrape on the ground to sharpen. A long, heavy flashlight is good, too. Nobody bats an eye at a woman with knitting needles. Some of those giant, pointy crystal rings can be turned to your palm. Acrylic nails are sharp, and eyes are squishy. Your jaw muscles are stronger than you think, a human bite really hurts. I'd rather be prosecuted for defending myself than end up dead.

Hairspray and perfume/cologne on your person are a little easier to get away with in a place like the UK. And bug spray. I wouldn't necessarily carry the other kinds of sprays, it's harder to justify it. If you were trapped at home and being attacked, then you might only get a slap on the wrist for using carburetor cleaner?

Saying you were carrying a bottle of wasp spray "just in case" might be a very weak defense.
QUANTUMINSERT@reddit
This "tip" is nonsense. Read any wasp spray can and you will see that it's considered a form of poison. In other words, this is a good way to get charged with something more serious than simple assault.

navyboi1@reddit
In the US it's a federal crime to use pesticides in any way not in accordance with the label (the label is the law). I highly doubt any court would prosecute you if it was self defense, but I'm sure that there's a lawyer out there who would take an attackers case if he tried to sue you. Highly unlikely they'd win, but it's a non zero chance

hotfistdotcom@reddit
I just checked multiple cans of wasp spray, and they don't contain any capsaicin or anything that I imagine would stop an attacker immediately. I have used wasp spray often to deal with small wasp nests, with no issues. Pepper spray on the other hand, I have carried and can legally carry here, but I have learned that it causes catastrophic asthma attacks when used even as directed if I so much get a whiff of it. And you know, is designed to burn and blur vision and feel terrible and make it hard to function, to stop an attacker. Poisoning someone with wasp spray may hurt them, but probably not quickly enough, and I wouldn't be surprised if somehow you ended up liable for misusing it - not saying I'd agree with that, but probably a good idea Additionally, sabre's website and several others clearly state pepper spray is legal in all 50 states - even if you can't ship it, you can likely buy it locally.
I'm pretty sure submission by OP is entirely misinformation and more likely to get someone harmed worse, rather than likely to avert an incident.

This is coyote and bear country, though. So.

Pretty much any compressed aerosol will work when sprayed at the eyes. I got dust blown into my eyes and I was blinded and in pain for an hour. Perfume, insect repellent, hair spray, spray paint, etc will cause burning in the eyes. Even pocket sand would be a viable solution.
Don't forget pain isn't the only sense. Smell and light can be debilitating as well. Look at liquid deer and rabbit repellent (the smell will make anyone vomit), a million candle strength flashlight in the eyes will blind someone, and 150db screaming noise maker will stop most.

Nope.
SABRE gel is something entirely different; wind resistant, can be used indoors without irritating the operator, hellishly evil.
There used to be videos on LiveLeak (when it was still online) of city cops using SABRE on some of the biggest, meanest most drugged-out guys you've ever seen and a second later they were screaming like a feral animal thrashing on the ground.
"pepper spray" typically has 1 ingredient; SABRE has 2, including military strength tear gas.
