Is Windows 11 Worth it?

I’ve had my pc for around 2 years, when I built it I installed windows 10, however my pc keeps reminding me to download windows 11. What are the differences? Is it worth it? And if not, how do I prevent it from popping up more?
Tonny_Gaugh@reddit
Just wait a couple of months. I'm on W11 but the truth is that w10 is faster and less buggy
Stargate_1@reddit
W11 has measurably better performance in games thi.
Also genuinely curious what bugs you've encountered so far. I've had no issues with neither 10 nor 11
Parking_Chance_1905@reddit
This, I got about a 20% increase in performance across the majority of the games I play on an ancient (2013 build) hardware.
emeralda_official@reddit
Nice bullshitting with 20% but there indeed isn't much performance loss, performance differs 1-5% at most between them so no difference
IanMo55@reddit
How is 10 faster and what bugs are you talking about?
CreatureofNight93@reddit
I upgraded to Windows 11 some months ago, and for me it runs a bit better than 10, I did though change the UI back to that of Windows 10.
ItchySackError404@reddit
Just get windows 11.
And when you do, open command prompt as administrator and type:
reg.exe add "HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32" /f /ve
And then restart your PC
This will change the right click menu back to the windows 10 layout which I recommend because the default right click menu on windows 11 is rage inducing.
Parking_Chance_1905@reddit
Yep, why move some of the most used features onto a 2nd menu...
ItchySackError404@reddit
And the fact that 7zip doesn't embed into the default.... I use that a lot
Emerald_Flame@reddit
That's an issue with 7Zip, not Windows.
The reason 7Zip doesn't show up in the new right click menu is because the API they're using for it has been deprecated and they never updated to the "new" API. And I put "New" in quotes there because it's like a decade+ old at this point. That's completely on 7Zip for not updating their code.
If you're interested NanaZip is a fork of 7Zip that corrects the right click menu, properly supports dark mode, and has a few other added features.
ItchySackError404@reddit
I'll check it out, sounds nice if it matches your color mode!
MobileVortex@reddit
They are icons at the top of the right click... Assuming you mean copy/paste/rename
Parking_Chance_1905@reddit
Yeah, but muscle memory made even that change a little more than mildly irritating lol.
IanMo55@reddit
Definitely a weird thing to do but it's easy enough to switch it back.
sagarassk@reddit
Just to piggyback on this. I ended up spending $5 on "StartAllBack". I hate the new apple style taskbar. I also wanted my tray icons back and the windows 7 style of the file explorer. Best $5 i've ever spent.
MariusTheUnyielding@reddit
Dude. You literally just made my life so much better. Thank you.
Martini1@reddit
Does Openshell/classicshell not work on Windows 11? I used it on windows 10 to get an actually functional start menu in it.
throwmeawaydoods@reddit
it does work, i will say that the win11 start menu is a lot more functional than 10 (though it’s still not the same as the classic list view if you prefer that)
Emerald_Flame@reddit
At this point, it's more or less personal preference. However, you have less than a year left to upgrade. W10 receives it's final security update in 2025-10. After that point, Windows 10 realistically will no longer be safe to use when connected to the internet due to new security flaws that won't ever be patched. You need to update to W11 by then.
Update
mprevot@reddit
There will be patches for W10, but to be paid.
Emerald_Flame@reddit
That is correct, you can get up to 3 years of extended support if you're willing to pay for it, but it's not exactly cheap for most people.
For the vast majority of people, it's going to be a lot easier and cheaper to just upgrade. Even if their current hardware isn't supported, and you don't want to side-step some of the requirements, it's likely going to be cheaper to upgrade than it will to pay for the updates.
mprevot@reddit
I think the security flaws are overestimated. The last build is old, patched converged likely to some higher level of security.
Anyway, I think I remember the prices will be lower for consumers.
How many users of W7 kept using it after end of support ?
Emerald_Flame@reddit
It's really not. Over the past decade plus, we've generally seen that once an OS goes out of support, significant security issues that were previously unknown come out of the woodwork pretty quick. It's pretty common that this close to to an EoL if blackhats are finding major security flaws, they sit on them and keep them silent until the EoL date so they don't draw attention to it so it goes unpatched and they can exploit it essentially forever after the EoL passes.
Lots. And lots were also victims of identity theft, fraud, etc due to the insecurity of the OS.

Do you have data or links about "lots were also victims of identity theft, fraud, etc due to the insecurity of the OS" ?
amfaultd@reddit
Just prolonging the inevitable.
bobsim1@reddit
Well thats time were i use a well proven product instead of goong to a new one. If you need your system running you should test win11 before 10 runs out of support. If it isnt as important you can just as well wait for a while. There isnt much benefit to upgrading now if you dont need the new features.
DokCrimson@reddit
W11 has been out 3 years…
bobsim1@reddit
That doesnt make it better. Win 10 is even older and has still problems.
MobileVortex@reddit
And only offered to enterprise customers
mprevot@reddit
no, consumers too
Pajer0king@reddit
Me, still using win 7 🥰
logangrowgan2020@reddit
absolutely not it sucks, you'll just spend more time customizing it to be like win10. win11 is worst windows since 8
polishfemboy_@reddit
In my opinion no.
FakeMishraJee@reddit
Just install Debian 12
JKLopz@reddit
Yeah, not as bad as people make it to be, its not a Win 7 vs Win 8 type of upgrade. There are some changes and you might have to configure stuff to make it look/feel like win 10, but that's it. (I'm currently using both, 10 on personal PC and 11 in work pc, most of the time I don't even notice a difference {I'm waiting to upgrade my storage situation to do a fresh install of win 11}).
nyctophobiax@reddit
I had windows 11 since its release and never had any issues I’m surprised people are still debating on the upgrade 3 years after its release
discoKuma@reddit
because it still has plenty of bugs.
discoKuma@reddit
I had to downgrade to Win10 two days ago because Warzone kept crashing on 11. Some mandatory subsystem I couldn’t disable was causing issues, and VMware Workstation Pro runs way better on 10 than on 11—at least for me. Not sure why, but otherwise, the experience on 11 was great. Lots of improvements, but also things I didn’t like. Overall, it’s good.
Just stick with 10 until it’s done—no rush.
As for the pop-up, I just closed it, and it never came back.
DokCrimson@reddit
Just use W11. LTSC should only be used in circumstances where the software/hardware you use isn’t functional on W11. Otherwise the world moves on and compatibility will be for just W11
Mr_Jackabin@reddit
Just get it, Windows 10 is at end of life and 11 is decent for things like HDR etc
AbhishMuk@reddit
Standard windows 10 is near EOL. Win10 LTSC IOT will give security updates till 2032.
DokCrimson@reddit
IOT.
SeafoodDuder@reddit
There are things you can download to make windows 11 look just like windows 10. It's worth it to make the move.
IanMo55@reddit
Such as?
mprevot@reddit
explorer patcher too. free
IanMo55@reddit
Thanks.
SeafoodDuder@reddit
Like OpenShell: https://open-shell.github.io/Open-Shell-Menu/
There are other options like: -https://www.startallback.com/
-https://www.tomshardware.com/software/windows/how-to-make-windows-11-look-and-feel-like-windows-10
But I've only ever used OpenShell.
IanMo55@reddit
Ok. Thanks for those.
SeafoodDuder@reddit
np :)
EvilDan69@reddit
IF/when you do, clean install. Don't upgrade.
mprevot@reddit
I keep W10 enterprise/workstation so far and maybe beyond october 2025. I find the GUI of W11 too complicated to get the same things. But it's also more unified and nicer, many good features too (HDR, etc). But do you need them ? Also you give up on some control over your OS.
Also, can you update ? ie., do you have tpm2 chip ? do you understand what is involves ?
I invite you to try W11 in a virtual machine.
If security is a priority or a problem, W11 is a good update with default settings. But a properly set up W10 box is good too, maybe better since it's more stable (less new features), so the security converges to optimal coverage.
W10 ltsc 2021 or W11 ltsc 2024 (same build as Windows server 2025: 26100) are also good candidates if you look for security and stability long for 10 years.
wiseude@reddit
Is your pc a gaming pc?if so w10 is better simply by the fact it doesn't have tpm/vbs which have been proven to reduce performance.
TrickyPianists@reddit
YES AND HELL NO.
ltecruz@reddit
Made the change 2 months ago - 0 problems.
BlatantPizza@reddit
Sounds great what an amazing endorsement.
Ozi-reddit@reddit
11 is a lot worse in many ways ...
if don't want nag non retail is way to go, LTSC
orasatirath@reddit
bloatware11
BeardedBears@reddit
No, but it's not like you have much of a choice. Either hang on for about another year, then upgrade, or start tinkering with Linux.
Accomplished_Emu_658@reddit
I think so for security updates and some features. Also it will stop bugging you. It takes a bit of getting used to.
I loved windows 10 but once i got used to 11 it’s good. Not perfect sure.
Marco-YES@reddit
No.
Dobdasss@reddit
Just do it, I´ve had it since launch and I can´t think of something that I had a problem with that hasn´t been fixed already + w10´s support ends next year I believe, definitely worth it.
NecDyteOFFICIAL@reddit
The only thing bad abt w11 is that for those who don't want to spend money on expensive games and wants to repack them they currently can't or not that I am aware of because of all errors
Wahoo_Party_shirt@reddit
Eventually, years from now, you'll need to download it in order to use some software. So why not do it when it's free to download for you?
