Tested: Forget performance, battery life is the reason to buy a Snapdragon 8 Elite phone

Why would I spend that kind of money on a phone when mobile OS's are such garbage!
ChemicalCattle1598@reddit
Hmmm. You know, you should try that again in r/unpopularopinion.
democracywon2024@reddit
No offense, but that's more r/popularopinion material.
I'm gonna be 100% serious here: Windows 8 showcases what an ideal operating system should be. Now, that execution is absolutely dogshite, but it's good enough to see what could've been. A touch based tile OS that looks fantastic and is easy to use paired with the option to switch to literally just a regular computer desktop. Now the issue is no apps supported it, the ones that did weren't great, but the actual underlying idea was brilliance. When you pair that with the Windows Phone OS design, you see how a singular device could have been a phone, a tablet, and a Desktop given the right execution.
I've got a Galaxy Z Fold 5 currently. The front screen is a phone, the inner screen is basically a tablet, if I connected a keyboard/mouse/monitor it's plenty powerful to act as a PC, if the operating system was capable.
Android? Well it sucks at tablets, it's just a big phone. Samsung Dex gets 75% of the way to a desktop experience, but it still lacks some and it's not in native Android.

Think this is the minority opinion the only phone os’ I truly miss is bb10. That was abead of its time. And whatever palm used. Android and iOS are great for phones. I don’t want my phone being a desktop computer too

This unfortunately doesn't work. One of the main reasons being that smartphone hardware isn't powerful enough to run modern Windows apps. There is inherently less performance in a smartphone than a laptop because of power and cooling budgets. Having a small phone battery and having to drive a laptop size screen would also cause problems as that's another high power draw area. Emulation costs really don't help here either as they not only degrade performance but also battery life.
Now if we lived in a world where desktop apps weren't web apps running in electron then maybe this would be more feasible. Though I still don't think it would be that practical to use as a laptop. Maybe more as a desktop with a docking port or a lapdock like the ones that used to exist. That way any larger screens could be powered by an external source or extended battery and SoC power budgets could potentially be increased when docked - though cooling would still be an issue.

Hey buddy, they made a Snapdragon 850 laptop SOC for Windows: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-850-SoC-Benchmarks-and-Specs.420753.0.html
That's far less powerful than a modern phone SOC.

I literally own one of those laptops. It's painfully slow. When I speak I do so from experience and knowledge.
inevitabledeath3@reddit
Also Windows 8 wasn't pushing for convergence as a feature as much as 10 did if I remember correctly.
djashjones@reddit
lol, Yeah, sorry mate. I'm old.

Android is nice. You can make it exactly how you want it. Newer versions are more limited though, so I stick with 10. I run Windows games on mine. I hate IOS, they treat you like a baby.
panckage@reddit
Android deprecates older apps. In order for them to keep working devs have to spend countless hours upgrading $1 apps. Its literally forced delisting of apps. I used to like android but it has become insufferable like google search
NeonBellyGlowngVomit@reddit
Android also is open source, buildable, extendable and has easy workarounds for older apps. I'm on Android 14 and still run apps that were built for Cupcake.

Are you one of these “year of Linux desktop” people lmao
JumpInTheSun@reddit
Instructions unclear- phone is now a nail.
djashjones@reddit
Kiwi Browser is the closest browser I've found for the desktop experience. My wife was using my old ipad pro until youtube started clamping down on adblockers, Safari on IOS/PadOS is the worse experience.
dkgameplayer@reddit
I also use Kiwi. Love the bottom reachable search and tabs. Like windows phone
mduell@reddit
Android: so nice the people who like it stay 5 major versions behind
dkgameplayer@reddit
Yeah, old android is better than modern or old IOS imo
Fromarine@reddit
BTW this is with the x elite midel actually having a slightly SMALLER 5800mah battery vs 6000mah last gen. Display is the same panel model too so slight battery size difference aside pretty 1:1
Hendeith@reddit
It's having a slightly BIGGER battery. Last year's model had 5500mAh, new one has 5800mAh. That's mentioned in the article too.

*8 Elite
OwlProper1145@reddit
Not bad at all especially considering the 8 Elite phone has a slightly smaller battery.
logosuwu@reddit
Why didn't they test it against its closest competition as well lol
