I shipped a package using Posta

I mailed a package back in August, and unfortunately, it still hasn’t reached its intended destination in the USA. After waiting for an extended period, I decided to return to the post office in hopes of finding out what went wrong. When I arrived, I approached the staff and asked if they could help me track the package down using my identification and name. However, they informed me that without the tracking number, they wouldn’t be able to assist me further. The issue lies in the fact that the tracking number was printed on a receipt, and over time, the text on that receipt has faded significantly, making it completely illegible. Frustrated, I listened as they explained that, due to the lack of a tracking number, they were unable to locate my package. Now, I’m left wondering what options I have to resolve this situation.

If you sent anything untracked using Magyar Posta, it is safe to say your package is gone. While this has significantly decreased over the years and the level of service has improved, this still happens. Also, thermal receipts do not fade within 3 months unless you really abused them / keep them next to any heat. Next time, take better care.
In the future, use a tracked service or a private courier like DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc. Also, most packages are delivered within 30 days for not express so I do not understand why you waited so long.
Sadly, you are SOL in this situation.

“…the level os service has improved…” Haha. What are you talking about? Never rely on Hungarian Postal Services (Magyar Posta). Bloody ignorant, useless, unreliable, inefficient and expensive company.

Outside of the prices, mpl is pretty much a higher mid tier curier company in the international perspective. I would even risk to call it a lower high tier one.

They’re much better than DPD, Sprinter, or SameDay.
SameDay is literally now the shittiest company in Hungary. Even Magyar Posta had a delivery window snd calls before a delivery, but they don’t.

With all honesty if there is a postal service provider which is signifficantly worse than MPL it is USPS. Even if its tracked, they can just lose it easily.

Tracking doesn’t mean anything either. I sent a package 3 months ago tracked and it’s still showing at Nemzetkozi Postal Kicserelo Kozpont and no one can help me

Tracking stops in Hungary sometimes after it’s exported. The postal systems aren’t well interconnected like DHL, FedEx, etc.
Search at the destination country’s site.

Without a tracking number there is not much you can do (actually, even if you had one, you wouldn't be able to do much), however I would not give up on the package yet, there are good chances it will show up eventually. I've had packages arriving after 4-5 months from/to the US. By the way in my opinion/experience USPS is the worst one out of the two providers.
Which service exactly did you use by the way, regular mail or some sort of 'premium' packaging service? Did you provide an email address/phone number by any chance when you mailed it? (some services have the option to add them). Anyways, next time I would recommend EMS, it's extremely fast and reliable and not that expensive.

Amazon didn't deliver to Hungary for years because so many packages kept getting "lost" by Posta. They used DHL now. Never, ever use Posta for anything important, valuable, or fast. It took them 4 days to deliver an envelope from Szeged to Budapest with priority. I have heard it's somewhat better, but there's a reason people rarely use them here.
igenigen@reddit
No they don’t. Packages primarily come by ExpressOne 90% of the time and sometimes DPD, UPS, and yes Posta.
BTW, the reverse logistics (returns) is still done by Magyar Posta doing a Deutsche Post DHL label.

This was an issue about 10 years ago. You're probably too young to remember.

Can you try to guess the tracking number by putting it in the posta tracking page?
DataNerdling@reddit
can you guess the nuclear launch codes?

With enough time... Heck yeah
fogatlan_prokator@reddit
all u can do is avoid Posta next time :((

Try to take a photo of the receipt and try to enhance contrast, colour and maybe decrease intensity of light. You might want to try to use other filters on the photo. Other than that there is not much to do, sadly. Overall, I hope you have luck with the photo adjustments

I’ll try this thx!

A few months ago I went to the post office to grab my package, that I happened to find out had arrived. Sadly I did not know the tracking number. They wouldn't give me my package even though it has my name and address on it. The post office is worthless in Hungary.

There's not much you can do, the tracking number is probably not connected to any other identifier, and without that there's no way of telling where the package might be stuck.
