I know we're not old old yet but some of those lyrics hit like a ton of bricks.
"And then one day you find, ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun."
TonyNoPants@reddit
Hits me everytime because of the way certain parts of my life ended up playing out. And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but its sinking.
EurekasCashel@reddit
"Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way"
As I am here scrolling Reddit on my phone.
Possible-Feed-9019@reddit
Learn that I’ve been misquoting the lyrics. I always thought it was “Fritter away” instead of “fritter and waste”. It has the same meaning, but I’m wrong.
Thanks fellow redditor!
Checktheusernombre@reddit
Think I thought it was something like "fritter away the hours that make up the dole day"
NatchJackson@reddit
You are conflating that line with the prior one:
"Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day"
TonyNoPants@reddit
Which also kinda works
BlackberryHelpful676@reddit
Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older. Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
PlentyOfMoxie@reddit
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
NickLoner@reddit
Love the song, but the older I get, the more it scares the shit out of me. "And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking. Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older. Shorter of breath and one day closer to death" really gives me anxiety lol
It's definitely a song that becomes more meaningful every year. One day I feel like it'll be too painful to listen to 😅
MsBlondeViking@reddit
In ‘04 I lost my closest sibling to murder. We listened to Pink Floyd together a lot. This song reminds me of him. These lyrics were tough to hear, the year or two before the ten year anniversary of his death.
NeedsMoreTuba@reddit
Me getting stoned and listening to this when I was 19: "Yeah!! I'm gonna do all the things and it's gonna be so awesome!! The starting gun went off and I'm on track for success!!"
Me now: "I might have heard the starting gun, but I think it shot me in the foot because.....yep."
National_Geologist29@reddit
I get it. Those specific lyrics had me tearing up on my way to work.
PlentyOfMoxie@reddit
That song scared me into action when I was 18 (classic rock radio). I vowed to never let time just slip past me.
HorrorHorse4990@reddit

OviliskTwo@reddit
My favorite song as a Junior in High School. I wore tie dye and hung out with punks and occasionally jocks. We hated most current music. You guys went through this mini hippie resurgence too?
HorrorHorse4990@reddit
Yes lots of phish and the dead, Allman brothers, etc.
HorrorHorse4990@reddit
I remember listening to this album on CD, with Wish you were here, the Beatles' revolver, I think Sgt. Pepper, and Jimi's Axis bold as love as a teen traveling through England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and France during the Celtic tiger years. Anyone near Philadelphia up for traveling?
wrxvballday@reddit
"Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time"
That one hits me
eLishus@reddit
I heard a theory that will make that line even more depressing. There’s a theory that the years seem to go by more quickly as we get older because our brains aren’t as good at remembering things as they used to be. So, your collection of memories from your 40s is less than your 30s. Not because you’re experiencing fewer things (though normal routines and fewer big experiences might also play into it), but because your capacity for remembering things has diminished.
AdHot6173@reddit
This makes sense. I heard a theory that it was because as you get older, you have less to look forward to. Which is even sadder.

Diligent_Bath_9283@reddit
I like to believe it's a perspective issue. 5 years is half your life when your 10. At 45 it just doesn't seem as long.
eLishus@reddit
Yeah, probably a combination of all these things. Like I had many more crazy experience in my 20s than 30s, and fewer in 40s. But my perspective on what I consider “noteworthy” has changed as well.
Diligent_Bath_9283@reddit
I'm just doing my best to convince myself it's not a downhill slide. Let me have that. 😏
Waaterfight@reddit
Man I'm so thankful my dad gave me his records when I was in elementary school. Dark side was my 5th grade jam. I'm 33... And it sinks in like no other words can...
Feel like I wasted my 20s and the last 4 years have been a whirlwind of catch-up.
Any-Extension9606@reddit
I was just thinking about this the other day and sometimes this group makes me feel depressed when I see stuff from the 90s especially like things that hurt and things that were better but it's just life.
I just think life is living and not so much reflection or worry. But it's ok to be philosophical.
Diligent_Bath_9283@reddit
The entire dark side of the moon album gets regular play at my house. It's one of my daughter's favorites.
Obligatory lyrics: running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears, wish you were here.
SadAcanthocephala521@reddit
Different album, but yeah, great lyrics.
Diligent_Bath_9283@reddit
Yes. It's the wish you were here album. That's just the lyrics that came to mind. I went with it.
SadAcanthocephala521@reddit
Gotcha, both are amazing albums. Listen to them on vinyl and it's an experience.
Diligent_Bath_9283@reddit
I've heard them from da88 tape in studio also. It was a small studio but still set up well. I lived with a well respected audio engineer who had her own personal studio for a few years in the late 1900s. You have listened to albums that she mastered. I agree there isn't much that compares with proper high quality audio that is equalized correctly instead of super sub heavy home rigs and mp3s. Streaming music is handy but it just isn't the same.
SadAcanthocephala521@reddit
Totally agree. I have an all vintage TT setup and I was completely blown away by how good it sounds. So much more depth than digital. Even the 2016 remasters are superb even though they are digitally sourced.
Diligent_Bath_9283@reddit
Very nice fellow audiophile. Da88 tape is a digital format. It's not like cd audio/cdda format. It's lossless uncompressed and true to the recording as long as there are no frequencies outside of its range recorded. I don't know if it still is, but at one point it was very commonly used in studio recording. With a proper dac its as good as analog provided you stay between its frequency limits which fall outside the range of hearing. It sounds like new vinyl freshly wiped and pristine. There is no noise floor in the recording other than that from mics equipment and the studio itself. Digital can be good it just usually isn't. When seeking internet downloads look for aiff or wav formats. It doesn't guarantee the file is high quality but if you get it from a good source they retain complete waveform information from 20hz to 20khz. Look for 44.1k sample rate. A good digital audio converter and tube amp with a properly recorded digital file will please even picky listeners.
I will agree there is something special about vinyl though. It's definitely more available than good quality digital. There's the whole process of listening too. It's not just choose a file and hear a song. You get to hold it, wipe it, love it and yell at people when they try to touch it. I do like being able to put my greedy goblin hands on something real. It's more of an experience.
Missluswim@reddit
For me it's "cold comfort for change/ did you exchange.. "
Antnee83@reddit
It's probably a perfect album, if there can be such a thing. I can't tell you a single note or beat I would take away from it.
TwilightStranger@reddit
Crazy. Just scrolled and saw this post a few seconds after Time started playing during my lunch break.

The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime
You shuffle at the gloom of the sickroom
And talk to yourself as you die
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
Feels like I don't see a lot of appreciation for Obscured By Clouds, definitely one of my favorite "lesser" PF albums. I've done this one as a cover a few times.
Icarus_Jones@reddit
If I recall correctly, Roger Waters was 26 or 27 when he wrote that line.
ChromeDestiny@reddit
Yeah, he said he had being going by this notion that his family taught him that life didn't really begin until you were a full adult in your 30's and then one day he realized oh yeah, life begins the second you're born.
Icarus_Jones@reddit
Out of curiosity, does that come from the footage of the recording sessions for DSOTM that were interspersed between songs on the 'At Pompeii' movie?
MiQeb_MiCayen@reddit
Totally right !
Interesting-Goose82@reddit
nobody asked, but here is my PF playlist of lesser heard songs
my list was inspired by an interview i heard with John Lennon. interviewer asked him something like 'people want more of The Beatles, they want the band back together!' and his response was something like "just listen to our solo stuff, we all have albums out and it all sounds very similar to The Beatles" ...and i thought, you could probably do the same for other bands that broke up!

Have you listened to Gilmour's album that just came out in September? I'm really digging it.
Interesting-Goose82@reddit
holy crap, this dude has been busy, there are a bunch of albums, many of them seem to be singles, but wow
SadAcanthocephala521@reddit
On an Island from 2006 is really good too, and even better is the live version Live in Gdansk because you get some PF favs mixed in.
Interesting-Goose82@reddit
i was completely unware of it, but im sitting at work listen to PF now, ill check it out!
YogurtclosetDull2380@reddit
I just watched Gilmour play this song live on Halloween and it was incredible.
It's much more depressing to read it on a Wednesday morning while I root around for something to do.
psylli_rabbit@reddit
Roger Waters was 27 when he wrote those lines.
SadAcanthocephala521@reddit
There's a reason why it's been on the top 200 billboard for almost 1000 weeks. It's timeless and speaks to every generation.
ChromeDestiny@reddit
Really glad I got the Dark Side of The Moon Immersion set. It was a pretty reasonable price and the 50th anniversary set removed a lot of stuff I really care about like the early rough mix of the album and the 70's Quad mix.
jdiddyindy81@reddit
Amen! Those lyrics hit different these days. 😭
StellarSloth@reddit
Just turned 41. I listen to Time on my birthday every year. One of my fav songs and my all time fav guitar solo. But damn. Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time…
Fngrbngr79@reddit
This is one of the songs I heard way too young. It truly made me face my mortality at age 12. Never been the same about death since
belladeez@reddit
Yep been listening this song my whole life and have always been keenly aware of my mortality. Well this song plus my psycho mother had to remind me about every 10 minutes that I'm going to die so I better quit being such an evil sinner 😈
EurekasCashel@reddit
Same. And then I had my first kid, and it amplified all that like crazy.
OhTheHueManatee@reddit
I did acid on my 30th birthday and listen to dsotm. Time gave me a massive crying fit. It's been ages since and it still gut punches me when I hear it. Such an epic song.
bearlysane@reddit
You’re older than you’ve ever been. And now you’re even older. And now you’re older still.
Disastrous_Basis3474@reddit
Oh yes, I realized this a few years ago. Like damn, how”d they know?
Lokitusaborg@reddit
My 12 year old and I had a 30 minute discussion on whether Time or Money was the better song. Sure Money has that sick bass riff, but Time has some of the best lyrics.
I was extremely proud that my daughter was so passionate about Pink Floyd.
New-Anacansintta@reddit
I spray painted those lyrics on my bedroom wall as a teen. They hit me so hard even then!
I swear I was the most normal seeming child on the outside..
HighMarshalSigismund@reddit
The time is gone. The song is over. Thought I'd something more to say.
Aspence22@reddit
Oddly I've listened to this song forever but about a year ago that line just sucker punched me, and then with the almost sad, distant guitar solo right after it's like damn this goes hard. Almost brings me to tears sometimes
Diligent_Bath_9283@reddit
I get misty. There is no shame among brothers.
junkerauto@reddit
Roger Waters lyrics, especially on DSOTM, are the gold standard for me
Buglepost@reddit
My daughter (early 20s) is discovering Pink Floyd, DSOTM in particular, and enjoying the music and we were talking about it. I encouraged her to really listen to and read the lyrics to Time because that exact same lyric has always stuck with me. She came back later and said the song was really good but kinda depressing, and I’m thinking, “yup, that’s Pink Floyd for ya.”
Diligent_Bath_9283@reddit
Mines 19. She was exposed early. Rough childhood with me angry at a horrible circumstance I was trying to work through the best I could. Her mother was mildly abusive and I was working 80 hours a week to feed us. She finally aged enough to see the truth in her mother and we left without looking back. My daughter has fully understood this album longer than she should have and it is somewhat painful.
sexwiththebabysitter@reddit
There’s a line by the killers in a dustland fairytale that always affected me the same as this one: “and the decades disappear like sinking ships”
Willing-Ant-3765@reddit
Sun is the same, in a relative way, but you’re older. Shorter of breath and one day closer to death. And now my depression is back.
Stimpisaurus@reddit
I was actually just talking about this with a younger coworker. She mentioned that she'd just turned 24, and it felt like she had just graduated high school. I joked that here in a few weeks, she'll be turning 30 and will really start to wonder where the time went. She looked at me kinda puzzled, and I recommended she listen to this song.
LukeMayeshothand@reddit
I’m 47 and would love to go back in time and live a random Saturday 8-10 years ago. Kids are teenagers in an instant it seems.
Stimpisaurus@reddit
Tell me about it!! My daughter is 7 and in 1st grade now, feels like she was just born!
Coyote_Roadrunna@reddit
Yep. Just got a coronary calcium scan done and will need to do a colonoscopy next year.
These are the moments Dark Side of the Moon prepared us for.
Notyoaveragemonkey@reddit
I must be an old soul, because that specific lyric hit me hard as a teenager.
awsm-Girl@reddit
I was 12 when Time was released. I just turned 64. Nuff said
Kinky-Bicycle-669@reddit
That lyric always hit hard.
malarckee@reddit
Ooof. They must have been our age when they wrote that… (googling) … nope, just deep in their first Saturn return (27ish for those not versed in woo woo)
t00_much_caffeine@reddit
Oof yeah the lyrics of that song hit hard as I get older
hbi2k@reddit
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way....
cinciTOSU@reddit
Hits like a truck.
PrestigiousCat83@reddit
Their entire catalogue is a “We Live in a Society” meme and I love it.
Ace_Robots@reddit
Floyd has never been my thing but Time and Money hit hard and always have.
