Are y'all really that forgetful?

What's with all the drivers getting parked and leaving their headlights on all night? Turn your lights off. The guy across from you doesn't want his interior to be lit up all night because you can't remember to shut your lights off. Be considerate.
MahoneyBear@reddit
I tend to forget when I park during day light, until I wake up in the middle of the night to take a piss and say “who’s this dumb asshoke with his lights on what the- oh”
Full-Respect-8261@reddit
Been that guy a few times myself, or botching about the jersey that's cockeyed in tbe parking spot and realizing, also me. Weird shit happens when your exhausted and parking for the night.
buckytuba1@reddit
So it's you
easymachtdas@reddit
And me
Sorry, il do better
RoadStocks@reddit
Lol always this. I talk shit to myself about it and its always when I shit down early when I was crazy enough to go OTR
Caveman23r@reddit
100% agree, no reason to have them on at all. If people get in the habit of turning off there lights before backing in it wouldn't be an issue
ElectronicGarden5536@reddit
Same clowns who drive with their lights off at night. Its just easier to be dumb.
RoadRatzzz@reddit
And trying to back in next to some jerk with headlights on! Good lord people, get a clue.....park facing the fuel island and see how many are incapable of turn their lights off.....smh....
JeepingTrucker@reddit (OP)
I'm parked facing the fuel island at a Petro right now. Lights are all off. Not that hard. It's kinda like wiping your ass.
Take a shit, wipe ass
Park the truck, turn the lights off.
Simple.
DUBBZ_757@reddit
Tbh i leave mine on with the idea that anyone parking beside me will hopefully be reminded where my truck is instead of accidentally hitting me due to it being dark/middle of the night
JeepingTrucker@reddit (OP)
Have you ever backed in next to someone that has their lights on in the middle of the night? You can't see shit in the mirror.
LordRaven74@reddit
I told a guy one night that he left his headlights on. His accent was so thick I couldn't tell if he was saying "I don't turn my lights off" or "My headlights don't turn off". Most of these newbies don't understand the courtetsies of the road. I am thankful for the ones that do.

Stop whining, it happens, I’ve done it, you’ll eventually do it.
JeepingTrucker@reddit (OP)
I've done it once in 14 years. Got bitched out, haven't done it since. Then again, I actually try to be considerate of others
Useful_Badger6021@reddit
Waaa waaa close your curtain!!!
JeepingTrucker@reddit (OP)
They were closed, I close my curtains every night. Still bright as fuck inside
xxenoscionxx@reddit
Feels like if am not forgetting and trying to find something I misplaced, am throwing out trash. It’s like 60% of my job.
Cardinal_350@reddit
Nearly 30 years ago I had an old driver bitch me out for leaving my headlights on at a very busy receiver. Everyone was backing into my lights. It took that one time for me to never ever ever leave my lights on again. Dude straight lit me up in a bullpen full of drivers at a grocery warehouse. Shit still makes me feel embarrassed haha
Fit_Hospital2423@reddit
That’s changed. Used to be that… 1)the new guy cared about getting it right. 2) drivers “policed their ranks. If you were messing up you could expect to get told about it.
Humble_Length5150@reddit
This should still be the norm...
ryanpayne442@reddit
Lol it doesnt work now cause most of the time the other driver doesnt speak your language
Fit_Hospital2423@reddit
Yepper…,plus he doesn’t give a shit about getting it right….plus all of the other screw-ups will tell you to mind your own business, because they are just as bad as him.
Humble_Length5150@reddit
This is why routine is important.
Do the same thing... Every leg of your trip. THE SAME THING, IN THE SAME ORDER, EVERY TIME. From going on duty, to pretrip, to DVIR's, to breaks, to post trips, to going off duty and certifying your log.
It becomes routine, and the benefit is it doesn't piss off the other poor bastard in the parking area. And you don't have to worry about missing anything.
RoadRatzzz@reddit
And trying to back in next to some jerk with headlights on! Good lord people, get a clue.....park facing the fuel island and see how many are incapable of turn their lights off.....smh....
Orlando1701@reddit
Nah, I’m just straight up dumb as fuck.
UhOhAllWillyNilly@reddit
Hey there’s a reason we’re truck drivers (and this is it)
joeyggg@reddit
I was taught to shut off my headlights when I enter a truck stop at night and drive through with marker lights only.
UhOhAllWillyNilly@reddit
Correctimundo! Not only at truck stops per se but any place where trucks congregate (like shippers/receivers). First of all, they’re usually well-lit, and secondly you’re only going to be driving a few mph and your flashers/marker lights provide plenty of illumination for low speed driving. It’s especially important where drivers will need to back in because headlights constrict your pupils making it much more difficult to see behind you in your mirrors when it’s dark.
JerkFace9@reddit
The new FLs have those eyebrow lights that stay on even when the lights are off. And if I turn off my lights completely, my dash turns into a flood light.
I hate it here
HappyHeffalump@reddit
Sounds like a lack of post trips out there lol
yak_danielz@reddit
i get your point OP. i have been on both sides of that situation.
then one of those rare times i actually spend the night at a truck stop, as the guy across from me was lighting me up with his freightliner hi-beams, i asked myself "self, have you done enough to prevent being this annoyed right now?"
i made some changes
nexusprax@reddit
My Volvo glitches about every week where even if I turn the lights off in the cab they stay on. Also turning off the truck usually fixes it however turning off the truck is like flipping a coin sometimes it will start again sometimes it won’t and I have to wait 4 hours for a road call or tow not worth it in my opinion
Fluffy-Caterpillar49@reddit
Damm so ypu just idle?
grimnir_music@reddit
Ya a lot of us have been there. I think I spent 2 months a few winters ago without shutting the engine off because I had an issue with the starter, and not much time or money to do anything about it right then.
Tricky_Big_8774@reddit
My starter works just fine and I only turn the truck off to check the oil.
easymachtdas@reddit
How come? Not looking to argue, geniunly curious
Tricky_Big_8774@reddit
No opti-idle and I'm running an inverter. Most of the time I fall asleep without shutting it down.
easymachtdas@reddit
Same for rhe most part. My inverter system will freak out when voltage gets too low... however thevwarning comes too late, bybthe time it wakes me up the battriesvare so low that it hardly wants to turn over.
Dont trust it at all
idontknowhowtopark@reddit
My Volvo does the same..
easymachtdas@reddit
Lights yes, but not starting??
idontknowhowtopark@reddit
The lights will stay on, even sometimes if i turn the truck off and then on again... I have no problem starting my truck, not sure why this guy does.... battery is faulty?
easymachtdas@reddit
I would be real concerned if i knew my truck wont start if it for any reason shuts off. Yikes!
idontknowhowtopark@reddit
That happened to my in my first year of driving after a PM, turns out whoever messed with my truck knocked a battery cable loose and I would always be unsure if my truck would start or not until they secured it for me.
----Richard----@reddit
Mine does this whenever I use my wipers when my headlights are off. The wipers automatically turn the lights on, then they don't turn off until I kill the engine, but if I first turn the headlights on myself, I can turn them off after.
JohnProof@reddit
It's awesome that they've managed to make headlights into this puzzle, like some kinda automotive Rubik's Cube.
Conscious_Weasel@reddit
They make window curtains for a reason. Just close them. Problem solved
Im-PhilMoreJenkins@reddit
Some trucks lime internationals will use the low beams as the DRLs when the tractors brakes are released. I tend to close my curtains every night so I've never found it to be an issue. And if you have the front curtains and the partition curtains closed, it'll be pitch black in the sleeper.
Ophiel239@reddit
My vehicle they just wouldn’t turn off. Complained to my job about it and they told me just to switch it off. Which I did. It seems to just turn on at night.
buckytuba1@reddit
Flash your lights to let me know
BoujeeRedNek@reddit
My trainer had a cascadia with a malfunctioning headlight switch, and it would turn on/off as it wanted. It was quite annoying, actually. You had to finesse it just right to get them to stay off.
Tiburon712@reddit
To get around the opti idle in my Volvo I leave my tractor brakes released. This no matter if I have my lights off automatically turns on my daytime running lights on at full blast. They are bright but not as bright as if I left my headlights on. I’ve had a few box trucks knock on my door telling me to turn the lights off at night. But if I want to cook and watch TV/ play Xbox I need the truck on. My inverter can’t keep up. If my company had apus I would have no problem shutting the truck off but since they don’t I’m going to idle. 90% of the time I park at rest areas only so it’s not an issue.
Outlaw11091@reddit
I've got a 2023 intertrashional.
The headlights are supposed to turn off when I pull the parking brake (I never actually turn them on).
Sometimes they don't. See the first line.
Aside from intentionally breaking them, it's not something I can fix.
viertes@reddit
Automatic headlights, coupled with rain or daytime shutdown... yea sometimes I'm forgetful.
I am going to say I don't mind it at all, especially when there's no lights in a parking lot, a new moon, and the only ambient lighting is coming from your trailer while trying to blindside back into that one middle of nowhere stop in Louisiana... lights are very appreciated, especially when there's a family of hogs out and they're grunting at the flatbedder who just threw old coffee at them. 4 minutes left on the clock! Couldn't leave lol
mblack1993@reddit
I would usually leave my Volvo lights on because they would basically act "auto" and turn off when I would shut the truck off. Then my apu would crap out so I'd idle the truck, but forget to turn the lights off. My bad 😬
William-Burroughs420@reddit
I like the ones with the 4 ways on all night, also!
How about headlights on high beam all night!
Good times!
Noxious14@reddit
I always left my running lights on so that any Swifts parking next to me at night had some extra help to not hit me. And that way I always had lights on if I somehow forgot them when getting underway.
But I agree, turn your low beams off when you park.
Weak_Pause177@reddit
you have to remember man, alot of truckers nowadays dgaf. bunch of fucking idiots, all about me me me. also this is why everyone should invest in a windshield/sun screen.
only lights i leave on are like the ones on top of the cab and even the side ones just so truckers can see me when driving past me when im parked
Holiday_Ad126@reddit
Yea i apologize for this , but in my defense i accidentally flipped that little light test switch that freightliners have …. My headlights would randomly turn on and off and was too tired to figure it out
Dezzolve@reddit
Happened to me once, I caught it about 30min after I parked when heading in the truck stop for a shower thankfully. Never really understood why they decide to put the light test button smack dab in the middle of the in cab lights lmfao.
ramanw150@reddit
I've had headlights that won't turn off on a truck before.
Sir_Uncle_Bill@reddit
My favorite is when they leave their brights on. One night at a pilot near Lincoln Alabama I pulled in for fuel. The entrance and exit are the same road. That road also goes just past the turn into the parking and fuel island and dead ends. Most nights two or three trucks will be backed up at the dead end facing the exit. One night there was only one but he had his brights on and they were the brightest of brights. Dude was bringing the shit out of everyone pulling into that truck stop. I was already having an off night so on the way out I woke him up and got him to turn them off.
EuphoricTruck4007@reddit
I constantly encounter Schneider drivers at a customer I frequent in Wisconsin. Fully lit yard, but these wheel holders still feel it’s necessary to drive around the lot with their high beams on. So frustrating.
Cleveland_Grackle@reddit
Tells the rest of the truckstop that you're a dumbass...
tvieno@reddit
Automatic headlights.
Mediocre_Ice_8846@reddit
So instead of closing your curtain or walking over there and asking them to turn it off, you would rather get on here and complain about it. Yeah, that will really accomplish something.
hooligan-6318@reddit
Pull your curtains and lay down.
I've left mine on once by accident, I was extremely tired after a long day. Wasn't deliberate, didn't realize I'd done it until pretripping the next morning. I rarely left the truck running unless it was going to dip below 0°
I imagine there's a few assholes that just leave them on, but most are probably just tired and miss turning them off.
