Are all trucking jobs keeping you away from home all week?

I keep hearing that this is the case but have some people I know that drive and come home most nights but have to stay out some. But do most of them require you staying out all week?

I do I-5 corridor....San Diego to BC.....then back south sometimes over to AZ or some short runs...I'm out 4 wks (give or take a few days) and home for 5 days. Live in Sacramento area. Of course my kids are grown and a widower so I don't really need to be home that offten.

You’ll wanna do local work. It’s what I do. It’s where it’s at. Especially night shift. The best shift 👌

I’m all local. About 52-55 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Off holidays Don’t make the biggest money, but I’m happy, and that’s what matters.

Same. About 80k and don't sleep in a truck.

Every job is different. There is OTR. Regional. And Local.
“OTR” Over the road, aka Long Haul, for most companies is 2-3 weeks out before you go home. You may run in a rough region or across the country.
“Regional” is usually a more defined region you run in. Western 11 , south east, east of the Mississippi, ETC ETC. most regional guys are gone 5-7 days at time and come home on the weekends or when their week is up.
“Local” most local guys are home daily. These jobs are anything related to your CDL and have you in your bed every night or most nights. Some local drivers but not all, might sleep 1 night a week away. Just depends on your job.

Also regional jobs don’t have you home on “weekends” only for a 34 hour reset as soon as that 34 hour reset is completed they want you on the road. Home daily jobs are almost as brutal you will use every bit of that 14 hour clock every single day. OTR is exactly as it is described you stay out as long as you like usually 3-4 weeks are required before you go home or you could wait 3/4 months and take 2 weeks off. I also know people who work all year except 1/2 months they take off

Not all companies. Mine sends me home with a load and as long as I get it delivered Monday they don't care when my 34 is up. My last "34" lasted 53hrs
Critical_Opening_526@reddit
Adding in. Too many inexperienced drivers think "local" as their metro area.
I'm in Detroit. If I go through Canada I can make it to New York and back in 9 hours.

Most of them absolutely run your clock out and it’s more of a question of where you’re going to spend 10 and 34 hr resets and whether you’re getting paid for every one of those hours worked or just while the wheels are turning.
Truckers work almost double what the 40 hr a week crowd does. Theres (for the most part) no such thing as work/life balance.

I work local. Always have. Been driving 3 1/2 years. The only time I haven’t slept in my own bed was my choice. Current company I am with has given me the opportunity to travel to other terminals.
Bibbimbopp@reddit
Most do. You really should plan on OTR or regional as an option you can live with. Don't get trapped into thinking specific cases disprove a general reality.
pm_me_ur_demotape@reddit
The local ones usually have you at home every night. . . after 12 hour shifts 5-6 days a week.
clarobert@reddit
Nope. I haul fuel - sleep in my own bed every night and always use my own shower.

Most jobs require you to stay out for a week or more but every job is different. I only sleep in the truck 1 or 2 nights a week. My job is technically regional but I live in the delivery area so I go home most nights. Most of my coworkers stay out for the week
