I got a degree from the School of Hard Knocks if that counts....
No, I did do extensive reading on engineering and made sure it was as safe as possible. I'm working with a safety factor of 3 and have successfully proofed the barrel and breech and will be proofing it again after it is 100% complete just before paint.
Like I said, it'll get proofed for a second time before I get behind it. It's fun to make insane shit, but safety is the number 1 priority.
For those interested in DIY firearms, I'd suggest researching Barlow's Formula, Boyle's law, and picking up some books such as Hatchers Notebook, The Gun and it's Development, and The Gunsmith of Greenville County.
Also, look into safety factors as they are the key to being safe.

Nothing, but one glance at your account and I could tell you're an angsty teenage boy from the Middle East, fueled by anime, and projecting your frustration on the internet to people who don't care.
Maybe he assumed you were going on about some broken brain shit about the us losing wars.
Upping your .STL save file resolution will get rid of the polygonal lines on the stock.
The slicer is going to take the file you load into it and convert it to gcode.
Feed it a higher resolution .STL and it'll smooth out.
Here's a photo dump of the road so far. I sat down one day looking at a CVA muzzleloader and thought, "Damn, it'd be a lot cooler if this was bigger," and here we are.
I started this project a little over a year ago. It's been slow progress as I had to have a lot of the big stuff contracted out, like the barrel, breech, recoil lug, and now the stock... more on that in a sec.
I started out by drawing everything up in CAD and 3d printed parts as I made alterations to the design, which there were a lot... After I was happy with how everything was, I sent the barrel out to a buddy at Rapid City CNC. I also had the recoil lug made by them but I wanted to make it thicker and had it remade by Catawba Valley Armory.
After the barrel was done, I didn't work on it for a while as I didn't have the skills necessary to machine the remaining parts. So, after 10 years of working at my employer, I switched departments to the machine shop. After a few months of very quick learning, I finally was able to finish the machining.
Whilst learning how to machine, I embarked on designing a stock duplication machine so I could make the stock myself. I thought I had the duplication machine dialed in, but the huge chunk of laminate really highlighted the shortcomings of my design. I ended up fixing the problems in my machine, but after the damage was too great to repair on the stock. Unfortunately, I'm not a millionaire, so the thought of ruining an expensive blank is heavy on the mind. So, I have elected to have the stock made by someone professionally. I have a few places that are quoting it, currently.
The build is very nearly complete, but I have a few hurdles to cross. I have to make a recoil pad from scratch, as the stock is too tall and wide for any grind to fit pads on the market. I also have to make a sight, a ramrod and its attachments, a tripod, a case, and have a 1.47" ball mold made.
It's been a helluva fun project so far, and I have learned a shit load! However, I am thankful that it's nearly over lol. Will post a video of the first shoulder firing!
I know you already have it designed for 209’s but you should look into an ignition system that’s used in smokeless muzzle loaders like Hankins precision.
Absolutely awesome. Now, add a box magazine and one of those levers for bolt action guns that went around the web a few days ago and let me rapid fire it.
What bullet does that fire? It looks like you could shoot a 14mm russian anti tank bullet. If you were to hint an elephant with that it would probably blow it to smithereens. There would be nothing but some tusk left and a giant red spatter on the ground
So no cartridge then? Do you load the ball/shot via the muzzle and the powder in the breach? One of the images looked like a bolt mechanism. Where does the primer go?
Sorry if these are dumb questions, I'm trying to understand how it works.
No cartridge. The powder is poured in, then a thin card to hold the powder in place and protect it from moisture. Then a felt wad is inserted, then the projectile(s), and lastly an overshot card to prevent it from pouring out of the barrel. The bolt is pretty much a big firing pin. It is pulled back under spring tension and engages the trigger. A 209 primer is inserted at the rear of the breech face. When the trigger is pulled the bolt slams forward and ignites the primer.
Not a dumb question btw. You'll never learn if you don't ask questions!
I'm actually not a big fan of brakes unless it's a competition gun or an ELR rifle (so I can spot my own shots). My ears ring too much as is, and I like recoil lol
Rifling could probably be achieved through casting the bullets with rifling in them, it should force the same effect due to gas flow. I’m sure it would take some playing with to get the right chamber pressures and cut.
It actually wouldn't impart much spin on the projectile. Rifled slugs, for instance, don't actually spin stabilize. Tons of slug designs are self stabilized without the need of spin. Think of a shuttlecock shape, as an example.
For real though, it was a lot of research, breaking out of my comfort zone to aquire new skills, and trial and error. I had a lot of help along the way too. You really can do just about anything in life if you put your mind to it.
Many failures or few. You sir should be on top of the world right now. I though I was the shit because I could cut apart pieces of steel and make a front bumper for my truck with my shitty welding. You are the biggest fish in this creek right now!
No wheels, but it is definitely a tripod only kinda gun. I tried shouldering it, and my tiny arms turned to noodles about halfway up and I couldn't get it any higher.
A max load is gonna be around 500 lbs of recoil energy. I'm definitely not starting with a max load. I'll start low and work up. I'm used to some insane recoil, but this is in a different league.
Other guy's got a point, what with the "reproduction" gatling guns that are on the market now.
Muzzleloading (black powder) cannons aren't federally regulated afaik. This kind of rifle already exists, and it's not extant on the market for a reason. They're too expensive to get a sustainable market.
If you put a muzzle-loading "reproduction" cannon on the market at the same price point those "gatlings" are at, you'd have an actual money maker.
"Historically accurate" reproductions of cannons are expensive as hell so there's not much market for them, either. If you put a plain steel tube on a wheeled carriage and marketed it as a "mechanical reproduction" of a muzzle-loading black powder cannon it would be legally the same, but at a price point that a lot more people would be interested in.
Ive been having this idea about a 40mm grenade launcher like the old ones from nam with a longer barrel and with special "shotshells" to shoot 00 buck like bird shot out of it and have longer 40 mm shells like those old brass 12ga shot shells. But never got down to putting the idea on paper. This shit is humongous. idk what you gonna shoot with it. I doubt theres enough ducks in a lake to shoot with this thing. But still real fucking cool
The only reason a 40mm doesn't blow you back into the next county is the hi/lo pressure design of the cartridge, which a regular shotshell doesn't use. It's part of why 40s go "poomp" instead of "bang." Pressures in the barrel are closer to a potato gun than a shotgun.
The idea is cool, but in practice, loading a 40 casing similarly to a 12ga would be like shouldering a punt gun.
Not saying it's not a cool idea and that I don't want you to still try :). Just thought that was an interesting bit of trivia.
I mean i aint talking about welding another piece of tube on the 40mm am talking new barrel and maybe a breach block but idk if it would work with tthe 40 mm shell.
This is really a sweet build! Reminds me of the punt guns they once used for commercially hunting waterfowl. Every pull of the trigger brought a different species to the brink of extinction.
Now it works... WTF. It's such a common thing for me on reddit. I see the first 3 pics and the rest are all broken. And since l've use Linux since the Macromedia Flash days I think it's normal for everything to be fucked until I remember I'm on Android.
I will also say, I'm glad I did make the switch. I really enjoy the work and actually take pride in what I accomplish at work now. It's stressful as hell, but I think I enjoy it more than my previous position. I just wish I was faster. I have a lot to learn yet.
Stepping up and helping the company in a small way also felt nice.

One better. Its not even a firearm since it's black powder.

"you'll shoot your arm off, kid."
Lol holy shit dude that is an extremely cool project. Please post more updates of the build process as you keep going, super interesting!!!

So a punt gun
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Of sorts. It's really a cross between a punt and wall gun.

You’re a madman

Nah, more like a slightly agitated man.

Now THIS is some next level fuckery I can get behind....
original_name1947@reddit
At this point just put it on wheels and give it a front shield to turn it into a field gun
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
No wheels, but it is definitely a tripod only kinda gun. I tried shouldering it, and my tiny arms turned to noodles about halfway up and I couldn't get it any higher.
roostersnuffed@reddit
Do you plan to measure out recoil ft/lbs before actually getting behind it?
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
A max load is gonna be around 500 lbs of recoil energy. I'm definitely not starting with a max load. I'll start low and work up. I'm used to some insane recoil, but this is in a different league.
SN4FUS@reddit

What do you even do with this? Hunt APCs?
Alberttheslow@reddit
Ive been having this idea about a 40mm grenade launcher like the old ones from nam with a longer barrel and with special "shotshells" to shoot 00 buck like bird shot out of it and have longer 40 mm shells like those old brass 12ga shot shells. But never got down to putting the idea on paper. This shit is humongous. idk what you gonna shoot with it. I doubt theres enough ducks in a lake to shoot with this thing. But still real fucking cool
Resident_Skroob@reddit
The only reason a 40mm doesn't blow you back into the next county is the hi/lo pressure design of the cartridge, which a regular shotshell doesn't use. It's part of why 40s go "poomp" instead of "bang." Pressures in the barrel are closer to a potato gun than a shotgun.
The idea is cool, but in practice, loading a 40 casing similarly to a 12ga would be like shouldering a punt gun.
Not saying it's not a cool idea and that I don't want you to still try :). Just thought that was an interesting bit of trivia.
Alberttheslow@reddit
I mean i aint talking about welding another piece of tube on the 40mm am talking new barrel and maybe a breach block but idk if it would work with tthe 40 mm shell.
Beebjank@reddit
Would this be ok for skeet?
grizzlyit@reddit
Yup this is fuckin sick
MrPBH@reddit
Nice! Looks like a labor of love.
One question for you. Are you worried about ATF and their silly definition of a DD? Did you file a form one for this or are you calling it a shotgun?
Dale_Wardark@reddit
Hey I was going to go hunt some King Tiger, maybe a few dragons, or maybe just kill Satan. Mind if I borrow it?

Thanks! I'm not from there. They just made the lug for me. The guy was so quick and helpful I wanted him to etch his company name in it.
_JohnnyR_@reddit
Did you switch departments just to be able to finish the gun?
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
That was 99% of the reason, yes. The remaining 1% was because I felt bad for the machine shop supervisor as he was short-handed.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
I will also say, I'm glad I did make the switch. I really enjoy the work and actually take pride in what I accomplish at work now. It's stressful as hell, but I think I enjoy it more than my previous position. I just wish I was faster. I have a lot to learn yet.
Stepping up and helping the company in a small way also felt nice.
