California agriculture faces significant losses as avian flu outbreak spreads. ‘It’s a mess’

Not to be political, I’m being purely analytical when I say the following:
Do not expect the new elected US administration to take any viruses seriously, they have every reason to (a) feel a sense of De Ja Vu and post traumatic stress and (b) question the validity and origin given the timing of their return to office.
WillBottomForBanana@reddit
I don't think it would make much of a difference in terms of national or international spread. It wouldn't be good, of course. The WW1 analogy breaks down because in that era viral transmission was limited by the amount of moving around humans did. We already move around so much, so far, all the time that this simply would not change much.
OtOH, if we happened to hold farm workers in concentration camps pre-deportation or pre-slavery, (or during slavery) at a time when a good % of them were infected then it might be ideal conditions to assist the virus in developing human to human transmission if it had not already.

last time I checked, Oseltamivir still works on HPAI

I think like many things that have divided us more or less 50/50, two different responses among states, companies and people.
One thing I think would be the toughest are schools - even in blue areas - would be the last to undergo masks, or remote learning again. It would take kids (not teachers) dying in schools to force them to reconsider.

*looks at Uvalde* Uhhhhh. Yeah. I doubt it.
thefedfox64@reddit
Yea, it would be pretty interesting to see companies not caring again and basically "well die" mentality. My company did that. They made you use your PTO, and then it was unpaid. Until many management got sick, then they got to work from home, and suddenly everyone could.
Nattydaddydystopia69@reddit
Not to be political but the current administration is trying its best to get us vaporized in a nuclear Armageddon so you really have to weigh your options on what to worry about.
NSFW_hunter6969@reddit
I pretty much just assume the worst with anything these days. I'm usually wrong, cause it is always even worse than I thought.
chemical_outcome213@reddit
Just curious, I'm sorry if it's too political, but if an outbreak started next year would deporting farm workers, if that happens, have an effect on all this? Like how WW1 helped the influenza epidemic spread?
Potential-March-1384@reddit
In the event of human to human spread it would be the worst possible outcome. Infected farm workers get sent to a densely populated holding facility before infected but asymptomatic carriers get shipped across central and South America. It’s essentially what you would do if you wanted to create a global pandemic.
GCI_Arch_Rating@reddit
It wouldn't stop the domestic spread either. The staff at the concentration camps would leave work having been exposed and spread disease among the communities around them.
Potential-March-1384@reddit
If it becomes H2H it won’t be limited to farm workers. The most at-risk (currently) segment of the population is actively disincentivized from reporting anything or seeking medical care due to the current tensions around immigration. Reporting on infection numbers and case tracking will have limited buy-in given the divisions around covid. That combination leads me to believe that we’ll have a lot of community spread without good data if/when it becomes readily transmissible. If you’ve got gaps in your preps, now is a good time to button those up.

“It’s just the flu” will have a whole new meaning
GispyStriker@reddit
There is no war in ba sing se.
Reasonable-Sweet9320@reddit
And RFK Jr will lead the effort to combat the spread.
pheonix080@reddit
It’s worse than that I am afraid. Truck drivers run cargo to and from farms, distribution centers, and stores in the most efficient manner possible. The greater supply chain, optimized for efficiency, will exacerbate the spread.
Dock workers are repeatedly in close contact with drivers from all across the country. Many are deemed “essential” and are not afforded the chance to quarantine or test in the event of exposure. I worked at a warehouse during COVID. Company policy stated that anyone exposed was to stay home for a week, at minimum.
Myself and a handful of others were deemed “too essential” to be within policy. Unless we tested positive, on our own time and dime, we were at work. It was a massive double standard. I fear we will repeat this again.
PsudoGravity@reddit
Wait, is this all by design? Are we witnessing accelerationism?
chemical_outcome213@reddit
I wish I hadn't thought to wonder, it never occurred to me till I just asked. And I'd imagine even if they were quarantined here before being allowed into another country, they'd all just get sick in crowded conditions. If they're quarantined, and being deported I'd imagine the US would fight not spend a penny on vaccinations and treatment. Then if they lived they'd get quarantined across a border all over again. Unholy hellishness. I'm not going to think along those lines anymore tonight. Humans can be a pretty sad lot.
MamaSquash8013@reddit
Ugh. The outbreaks would start in the migrant communities, and it would be labeled "an immigrant virus", or "Mexican flu."
chemical_outcome213@reddit
It was called Spanish flu before and originated in the US, so yeah, can't say you're likely to be wrong. Spain may be in the clear this time around ... :/
AlexTheBold51@reddit
Maybe we'll learn once and for all to not use illegal immigrants for labor, or to illegally migrate to other countries to begin with. One can only hope.
ThisIsAbuse@reddit
Food shortages will happen, prices will soar as well.
Ep1cure@reddit
Ever play Pandemic II I think it was called (a flash game or, Plague Inc, on android and likely on iOS? That's kinda what you hope for to kick start killing lots of people.
chemical_outcome213@reddit
And a really evil government could do it on purpose to destabilize others if they felt they were prepared enough. Damn. That's what some accused China of I guess, I avoided that rabbit hole. I don't think I'd sleep if I thought about it too much, weaponizing sickness in general. That would be one hell of a Tuesday.
Yes, I don't game much I played pandemic on my phone. I couldn't win, lol
Hesitation-Marx@reddit
And Chinese immigrants are high on the Trump deportation list.
CriticalReneeTheory@reddit
Back in the day the challenge was getting Madagascar quietly infected before they shut down their single port of entry 😭 but that was before smart phones back on Armor Games or Newgrounds (idr which)
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
And Iceland too. Madagascar at least had the benefit of being in relatively dense transport routes, but Iceland? No one wanted to go there so it was always tougher to get infected.
Ep1cure@reddit
I think it was Armor. I wasn't on new geound that much. I downloaded it and started in Madagascar just to be safe.
Flat-Jacket-9606@reddit
Yup! Would really kick start this shit.
VeganFoxtrot@reddit
Human to human spread isnt possible YET, but this is giving Spanish flu vibes.
caveatlector73@reddit (OP)
Actually, until they pinpoint the source if they can in British Columbia it remains a question even now. The teen had no contact with all the usual suspects.

Grab masks before the tarrifs go into place.

That's disgusting. 4 million. Wtf are we doing as a species?
