New ID

I recently moved here from out of state, I have an appointment to get my Texas license this week. Does anyone know if they give you the actual license on site or if they give you a paper copy and mail the ID later?

TSA doesn’t accept temp licenses as ID, and Texas will take your out of state license when you go. They will make you sign a paper saying you’re surrendering your OOS license
Source: recently moved here from OOS and had to fly on my passport for a few weeks for work.

Thank you, I’m a silly goose with no passport. I think I’m going to just reschedule the appointment, pain in the ass but I’m flying for a funeral so pretty unexpected 🙃

Agree, transferring your license is definitely a pain in TX. fyi - it is possible to get same day license appts if you log on at like 7-7:30am and keep refreshing the scheduler. Sorry for your loss, and best of luck

Even without a license or id you may still be able to fly. You just have to go thru an extra screening process with TSA. I arrived early and had to ask a bunch of questions without my device or looking at anything but the screener. -someone who once lost their id while on vacation.

Expired ID TSA currently accepts expired ID up to a year after expiration, for the above listed forms of identification. DHS has extended the REAL ID enforcement deadline to May 7, 2025. Learn more about REAL ID on TSA’s REAL ID webpage.
Don’t Have Your Acceptable ID? In the event you arrive at the airport without acceptable identification (whether lost, stolen, or otherwise), you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name and current address to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint, where you may be subject to additional screening. You will not be allowed to enter the security checkpoint if you choose to not provide acceptable identification, you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process, or your identity cannot be confirmed. TSA recommends individuals without acceptable identification arrive at least three hours in advance of their flight time.

Paper should have your pic on it and I’m pretty sure you can use that as your id

Make sure your out of state license is not expired. I moved here from Ohio and my Ohio license was expired by 2 weeks. Because of that, I had to re-do the whole process over. Written test, road test, temp license. It took me almost 7 months to get thru the system. That was 10 years ago, I can't imagine how much longer the new process would take now

Oh jeez. That’s chaos! I’m also here from Ohio. I don’t think my Ohio one is expiring, definitely checking though. My situation is unfortunately I got this appointment a few weeks ago and my grandfather recently passed I’m supposed to fly to the funeral the same day as the appointment and I’m worried I won’t be able to fly with a flimsy piece of paper 🙃

You have to have a picture I.D. of some sort to fly. And, yep, at the driver’s license office they only give you paper.

Paper copy then the actual license is mailed

Well that doesn’t seem like I’ll be able to get on a plane with that. :/

You will if you also bring your old one from previous state and/or your passport.
Or go for alternate ID and come earlier.
