I remember going to some breakfast shop somewhere in Indiana (or Ohio, I don't particularly remember) a few years ago because I got hornswoggled into going to the Gathering of the Juggalos. That place was pretty good. Also check out Waffle House, they are a definite must, but also regional so plan accordingly.

Tanya's Cafe here in town.
When we lived in Austin it was Cafe Java, hands down.
lindz2205@reddit
I’d say if they are already in Garland, that Judy’s Cafe is close too and really good.
Head_Razzmatazz7174@reddit
Not in Garland, but I do make trips out that way on occasion. Definitely putting this on my list of places to check out.

Place called "Sill's Cafe" in Layton, UT. It's been around since 60s.

Not sure if it's because I was irresponsibility hungover the morning after my friends weddding, but the best breakfast I've had, maybe ever, was at Margo's Family Restaurant in Greenville, MI. I had never been to Greenville before, and haven't been back since, but I think about taking a road trip over there from time to time just to eat there again.

In San Antonio and most of mid-southern Texas? You don’t want a diner. You want a taqueria.

Lou Rocs Diner in Worcester MA, also Mom’s Kitchen in Gloucester MA. Both are tiny and Lou Rocs is cash only but as someone who has eaten a lot of breakfast food they’re the best. Also Mom’s Kitchen has anadama bread, which is one of the most hyperlocal foods in the US. Being able to get a full American breakfast with anadama toast and Portuguese sweet bread French toast is a next level breakfast.
bjanas@reddit
Bonus points in that Worcester is one of the birthplaces of diner car diners, if not THE birthplace.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Anadama is one thing I’ll go down to north shore MA for

The US is absolutely huge. Making this question kind of nonsense. Its like asking whats the best cafe in all of Europe.
deltagma@reddit
Except that the US is still bigger than the EU haha
HorseFeathersFur@reddit
You know there are literally millions of cafes that fit this description in the US. Rip your inbox
longlivsquid@reddit (OP)
My inbox is fine! I know every town has one— the beloved breakfast joint, owned by that older couple for the last 40 years. Hank working the griddle and Sally waiting tables. You know the vibe! I’m looking for the ones that are especially cozy and classic, located in small towns mostly. The type of place that people used to smoke cigarettes in and when they outlawed it everyone was up in arms.
HorseFeathersFur@reddit
I responded with three that fit this bill but if you want more rural and Amish or Quaker I can add more
Weightmonster@reddit
where are you going? They generally exist in every town/area.
RodeoBob@reddit
Not mom-and-pop, but there's a chain in Oregon / Washington / Arizona called Biscuits Cafe that has a solid mom-and-pop vibe. Solid menu, good portions, and consistent service. Always busy on weekend mornings.
sociapathictendences@reddit
There’s a guy called @garrettfromgoldies on instagram who does a series called diners, diners, and diners on you might want to check out. He’s making an effort to review all the diners in NYC.
webbess1@reddit
You can't go wrong with a roadside diner.
psychocentric@reddit
Your best bet is to ask a local in a town you're passing through. Most of the mom-and-pop type places won't have a website or social media to even look them up. My hometown has a fantastic greasy spoon type restaurant that has weird hours, but is always busy. I'm not even sure if they have a phone number. Best omlettes ever!

Where?
longlivsquid@reddit (OP)
Anywhere in the US!

Big request.
My local is The Peppermill Grill.

This link suggests there are over 7000 breakfast diners in the USA. If you at at one for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day, it would take you ~2300 days, or more than 6 years to visit them all.

In the 80’s there was this little house in an old neighborhood in Spartanburg, SC that the owners split in two, one half was a little room with a few tables in it, a counter with a cash register, and behind that a stove, oven, and sink. “Ma Woodard’s” served up hot, fresh breakfast eaten while sitting on a bench, you could be eating next to a guy in a suit or in a bathing suit. The food drew in everyone.
longlivsquid@reddit (OP)
Is this place still around? Might have to make a trip!

El Castillo LES Manhattan. When I moved in (2000) eggs were $2. Now like $5-6 which is insane for Manhattan

There's Steak and Egg here in DC. Open 24 hours. Only place I know of that serves chicken fried steak for breakfast.

Broadway diner in Columbia, MO. So old school there were sit-ins at the lunch counter in 1960. It was originally named the Minute Inn, and you go up some stairs to get into the diner because it still sits on its original trailer, it moved to its current location in 2001.

For Houston:
Breakfast Klub: chicken and waffles or a catfish plate with good coffee.
Laredo Taquería: Straight forward breakfast tacos. Great tortillas, potatoes, fajita, and nopales.
Buey y Vaca (east side location): Some of the best tamales and gorditas I've ever had.
Sidewalk_Tomato@reddit
The best Mom & Pop is never a chain restaurant, unless it's a very local chain with just a few locations.
So you have to ask the locals for a few ideas when you get to town. And ask them what they like about it--because different little diners specialize in different things. One might have the best waffles, another might have the best steak and eggs, and a third might be vegan.

It was Mr. Perry’s when was a kid. Every single school function always ended at Mr. Perry’s. A zillion memories of a zillion kids are in that place. Sadly, the food sucks now, least, it did last time I was there. And they have TVs. I hate TVs in restaurants.

There was a place in my town where you could enter thru the back, which was the kitchen entrance, walk past the flat top grill, and then out into the dining area to get a table. Great breakfast place. Sadly closed now.
