Veeam pricing increase

So 5 years ago my company paid around 10k AUD for 40 instances for 5 years subscription. (2.5k per 10 pack)
After upgrading to v12 and using tape backup we now need around 90 licenses.
We now received a price of 27K for 100 licenses (2.7k per 10 pack) but instead of 5 years subscription it is only 1 year!
So the price per 10 pack has gone up from 2.5k to 2.7k no issues at all, but 1 year instead of 5 has technically made the price jump by 500%?
Is this normal?

We switched to Proxmox as a hypervisor and Proxmox Backup Server as a Veeam replacement and are saving about 20K per year. Best choice we could have made so far...
According-Part-1505@reddit
I don't understand why so many people even pay/use Veeam...
koollman@reddit
backup system that works is pretty valuable and sometimes worth paying for if you cannot feel confident some alternative solution could be good enough
According-Part-1505@reddit
Not for the pricing that veaam calls. Backup is no magic.
Same with Hypervisor and VMWare
Tech_Mix_Guru111@reddit
It’s no magic , but people haven’t figured it out still
itishowitisanditbad@reddit
Tech_Mix_Guru111@reddit
Well people don’t try to get the most out of a solution and would rather try to gain stature, clout by suggesting a new tool that does a better job of some innocuous feature and run to management for accolades. Implement new tool to 45% like the first tool, and then 2 years the cycle repeats. Solve problems, not play politics
New-Pop1502@reddit
Why use Veeam when you can use robocopy? /s
HMAAss@reddit
I don't understand it either. I use Unitrends and it is very good, I like that it offers automatic AI based ransomware detection.
Quacky1k@reddit
To be fair, it’s pretty damn nice for a backup system. Feel like more often than not it’s just to appease the people who don’t even understand it
WarlockSyno@reddit
For what I've seen, PBS would be fine for a vast majority of companies that don't have some mixed environments. Like, if you just have VMs that need backed up and don't need cloud stuff backed up - PBS is perfect.
HosTRd@reddit
We switched to Unitrends some time ago and I'm thankful we did. It's a good tool and it works great.
Ape_Escape_Economy@reddit
Hence why we’re evaluating Commvault, Rubrik, etc.
They’re ahead of Veeam for M365/ Entra ID backup and catching up (my opinion) in terms of BDR for infrastructure.
Recently has BDR for our workloads (mostly on prem) quoted and they were considerably cheaper than Veeam.
dasBorselMann@reddit
Please update us on how your Rubrik experience is / was? 🙂
We are considering them for M365 Backups.
Cove Data Protection also seems to have a great product, however, the sales team are too pushy for our liking hence we are shopping around.
chillzatl@reddit
For M365 backup, unless you just have to have it all on-prem, look at Avepoint. Nobody else comes close.
CloudBackupGuy@reddit
I would love to get your feedback on VMOBACKUP.COM in relation to Avepoint. You can easily setup a free account here: https://portal.vmobackup.com/o365/register?level=free&q=4236a440a662cc8253d7536e5aa17942
chillzatl@reddit
Let me start by saying that I love Veeam in general. Their on-prem solutions are, IMO, best in class and I used to feel the same way about VBO365. They were the first and for a long time the only product that backed up Teams. I still put them well ahead of most of the "box checker" 365 backup products.
I did a quick dive into their current literature and it doesn't not appear that they currently support planner, Power platform, Entra and some other extraneous 365 services. Granted, some of these are add-ons for Avepoint's backup product (Power Platform, Entra, etc), but the option is there if you want them.
So for me, it would not pull me away from Avepoint, but compared to many/most 365 backup products and services, and looking at the price, it seems like a great offering.
CloudBackupGuy@reddit
Yes, thanks for that feedback. Hopefully with Veeam being a billion dollar company they will allocate the resources to add these additional capabilities.
Ape_Escape_Economy@reddit
Won’t be going with Rubrik unfortunately due to them not meeting our requirements (support for backing up Entra ID objects like CA policies, app registrations, etc.).
dasBorselMann@reddit
Thank you for this!
I’ll keep a close eye on this thread - so that I can learn from others!
Ape_Escape_Economy@reddit
No worries!
If backup of Entra is a requirement for you like it is for me your options are as follows (based on my research):
Veeam is supposed to be adding this functionality Q1-Q2 2025, we’ll see.
If backing up Entra is not a requirement for you these are also worth considering:
There’s Conesity, Rubrik, Acronis, and ConnectWise (Axcient x360 and Skykick) as well, but I found those two to be the best value (in terms of affordability, capabilities, and performance).
irrision@reddit
Commvault is a dumpster fire compared to veeam fyi. Have used both.
Ape_Escape_Economy@reddit
For Microsoft 365 or other workloads?
WarlockSyno@reddit
What about Nakivo? We got quoted on Rubrik a while back and it was so highly priced we had to laugh out loud.
Ape_Escape_Economy@reddit
I was strongly considering Nakivo but unfortunately they did not end up meeting our requirements (backup for certain objects in Entra ID).
Looks like a great platform and very competitively priced though.
MFKDGAF@reddit
Who was cheaper? Commvault or Rubrik?
Can you give use the specs of your licensing with Veeam and what you were paying?
basicallybasshead@reddit
It looks like it started smelling like Broadcom...
Ok-Double-7982@reddit
On premise licensing is seeing increases that match or exceed those of cloud solutions.
Dinosaurs will die on the hill to stay with on premise, but look at Veeam and what Broadcom has done with VMWare licensing lol.
They are going to get you one way or another. I have been moving to the cloud because if I have to pay one way or another, I want the flexibility/accessibility of the cloud, and all the risk and maintenance shifted to them as well. I don't want to have to be called at 11pm on Saturday because something failed.
rfc2549-withQOS@reddit
That works for some usage scenarios, but for others, you end up paying out of the nose for cloud (monolithic apps forced on the cloud that were designed for onPrem, bonus if they generate huge traffic spikes and clog your uplink)
And you will be called anyways, you just cannot do anything.
You need to have a more differenciated view on the whole cloud vs onPrem thing.
Also, cloud does not help with the backup stuff either - ms or most cloud providers do not include backups.. and for exo that did cause data loss already a few times.
Ok-Double-7982@reddit
I pointed out that old timers who think on prem saves money are finding out the hard way it isn't true.
When you get called, you say, the vendor is working on it. We stop getting harassed when we send an email and no one's in our face, bothering us. So it's actually quite beautiful and restful than trying to fix an on premise issue.
You talk about cloud backup as if I don't already know that, but thanks I am aware.
secret_configuration@reddit
We dumped Veeam and switched to a Synology unit and use both Active Backup for Business and Hyperbackup to backup our small ESXi environenment.
Works great so far.
Ok-Carpenter-8455@reddit
Still cheaper than Unitrends, who we use lol
Patrickrobin@reddit
It sounds like you're experiencing a significant price increase with the new licensing terms. While a slight increase in the price per 10-pack from 2.5k to 2.7k AUD is understandable, the reduction in the subscription period from 5 years to 1 year is indeed a substantial change. This effectively increases the annual cost by a large margin, as you've noted.
Such changes can happen due to various factors, including changes in the company's pricing strategy, added features, or market conditions.
n1ck-t0@reddit
We're you previously on Essentials which has a cap of 50 and now you're being quoted for 100x not-Essentials? That would likely explain the increase. Not saying I agree with it, just what it could be.
Outrageous_Device557@reddit
Ours went up quite a bit to we were looking for other options but we like to sleep at night. But the search will continue.
HairyPresent@reddit
Your tape backups are consuming VUL. Ask your reseller to quote you on essentials nas capacity licensing.
RichardJimmy48@reddit
Get quotes for some competitors, so that you know what your alternatives will cost you, and then tell your Veeam account rep that you will not renew at that price and that they need to come to the table with something a lot closer to your previous pricing. They aren't actually going to do anything close to your previous pricing, but you can still beat them up and force them to meet you in the middle.
Alternatively, you could actually follow through with switching to a different vendor if they won't play ball. We moved from Veeam to Cohesity and have been pretty happy with Cohesity. It ended up being slightly more expensive for us than Veeam, but it works a lot better and automation with the API is a lot easier. We've always had this annoying problem where Veeam will occasionally forget to cleanup the vmware snapshots it takes during backup runs, and we haven't had that occur once with Cohesity.
derfmcdoogal@reddit
Mine was nearly the same. My 3yr renewal price is now my single year price.
rabbitlikedaydreamer@reddit
$4 aud / user / month (your old price) does seem like unusually good value.
But $22.5 aud / user / month seems excessive/overpriced.
But seems Vaeem have previous form in that regard , and worth talking to them.
See this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/s/BnPjGO1HQW
nerdyviking88@reddit
Your past quote seems outrageously low to me for 5 years
Bob_Spud@reddit
Vendors do that to hook you in for the long haul.
nerdyviking88@reddit
Agreed, just not used to seeing that on 5 years, usually 3
mautobu@reddit
Totally a loss leader to get them in the door.
Bob_Spud@reddit
Support/subscriptions is where the money maker is for vendors. You can always pull the plug on Veeam you don't need a license for recovery. Shop around.
