This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:
- Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
- I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
- I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

What Mainboard would you guys recommend for an AMD ryzen 7 7700x CPU and nvidia gfx 4070ti super gpu? I need one that has inbuilt wi-fi through pci-e card so that i do not need an usb dongle. (Might Mix this up, i just know that wifi through pci-e is better and sadly i cant use cable)
Pyreson@reddit
Are the performance gains of the 4070ti and up worth the extra hundreds of pounds or if I'm just a normie gamer (1660p, quite happy with 60-90fps) is the basic 4070 more than enough?
skylynx4@reddit
What is a good upgrade for 3900x CPU these days? Mainly for music production (Cubase), and some gaming? My GPU is 3080 so I'm probably waiting for the next generation, and I also play CPU heavy games most of the time anyway (WoW, 7 days to die).
Celcius_87@reddit
I just saw that my mouse has an 8000hz polling rate. Can you guys tell the difference vs 1000hz? I know it will drain the battery a lot faster but I'm constantly at my desk anyway...
n7_trekkie@reddit
Nope, I can't. I do 4000, which is a nice balance between battery life and theoretical benefit. 2000 is good as well. 1000hz is likely perceptibly the same lol.

I got my 6750xt early and decided a cpu upgrade is definitely needed here. What would be the best lga 1700 cpu under $200 to pair with it? Will be used for gaming only. Just trying to get the most out of my 6750xt.

After a White ATX Case & White 120mm Fans, any suggestions? I've looked at things such as the NZXT H5 Flow and Corsair 4000D but can't decide.
I'm running a 3 Fan RTX 3060 & not using an All in One Liquid Cooler so I don't need 360mm Rad Support.

If I set cpu voltage to offset mode with + "Auto" does that mean that the voltage is uncapped?
RyRocks101@reddit
Are there devices that can extend some of the i/o usb ports on my motherboard? I just built in the TT Tower 300 and loving it but the only problem is that the I/O is slightly difficult to access and I need probably about 5ft to get everything I'd like to plugged in. I know there's usb docks, but I'd like to maintain as many of the benefits of plugging directly into the motherboard as possible.
pugboy1321@reddit
You can get extensions for just about everything! I like Monoprice or Cable Matters for buying cables/extensions, and Infinite Cables is good too.
You should be able to find enough to replicate everything you need off the board!
n7_trekkie@reddit
Like USB extension cables? Yeah they have those

Looking for a reliable motherboard for a 7950x3d build, 64gb DDR5-6000 RAM. Needs at least 7 USB ports, and at least 1 USB type C. Needs to have wifi. Budget is ≤$250. Any recommendations or is my build okay?
FormulaGymBro@reddit
Get a far better cooler. It's a giant weak link.
shawnjawn@reddit
Interesting. I was initially going for a Noctua but was told the Phantom Spirit was of better value.
djGLCKR@reddit
The Phantom Spirit is more than enough. Any specific reason to go with the 7950X3D? Although, with the core parking issue mostly resolved it shouldn't be an issue for productivity with gaming on the side or vice versa.
shawnjawn@reddit
It's mostly because I stream, make music, and do editing so I felt like that would cover those functions. Probably overkill, but I can afford it and am upgrading from an 8700K!
djGLCKR@reddit
A bit overkill depending on the scenario, if it helps pay the bills, go ham.
FormulaGymBro@reddit
For me, I used to have a cooler master ma610p. The problem with it was that it was way too bulky in the case and the fans rubbed against the grill. I look at that and my first thought is:
Low price + big bulky metal blob with fans = oh no.
Others and yourself may have a different experience, but if I was in your posiiton, i'd be getting something like this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-H100i-CAPELLIX-Liquid-Cooler/dp/B0BQJ54XW5
djGLCKR@reddit
On the other hand, Thermalright is the best price-to-performance option right now. You don't really need a liquid cooler for AM5, it does the job, sure, but it's not really a must when air is still an option. Also, there are cheaper options that are not Corsair and its ecosystem.
You're pretty much getting the same performance as a more expensive cooler (be quiet!, Noctua, etc) for less than half the cost.
MeridiaBlessedMe@reddit
hey guys. My PC started randomly restarting itself whenever I'm running a "heavy" game from time to time, like once every 15/20 hrs of gaming or so, and I'm not sure whether the problem is coming from my PSU or my RAM. Thing is, my RAM is pretty outdated compared to the rest of my build as you will now see, and I'm thinking of finally jumping to DDR5 this Black Friday, I'd also need to replace my motherboard but that's ok.
My build: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G6 850W 80 Plus Gold Full Modul
Intel Core i7-12700K 5.0 GHz
Gigabyte Z690 GAMING X DDR4
MSI GeForce RTX 3080 VENTUS 3X PLUS OC LHR 10GB GDDR6
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 PC4-25600 16GB 2X8GB CL16 (32GB)
(srry for the font on the RAM, dunno why it pasted like that)
Any recommendations on which motherboard/DDR5 RAM combo to go for? And is 850W enough to power the setup? thanks

Hello Reddit.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZtmQVF
My CPU (i5-6600) is Bottlenecking my game performance and it needs changing. I want something to future proof my PC for the next few years as I don't really need it for gaming 80% of the time.
I welcome some options. My current choice is the i9-9900k for roughly $250/£200 used.
Questions:
Is it a good idea to buy a used CPU? Does performance degrade?
Do i actually need a new CPU for general browsing and working, or will my CPU really fall apart in the near future? It is coming up to 9 years old.
TehEpicGuy101@reddit
You'd be better off switching over to a new platform instead. For only about $200 right now, you could get a brand new AM4 motherboard and Ryzen 5 5600x, which should also outperform a 9900k.
FormulaGymBro@reddit
Interesting. What's the catch? What makes the i9-9900K more expensive, why is the Ryzen 5 5600x cheaper?
I could be open to rebuilding my PC from scratch. What would you say to motherboard?
TehEpicGuy101@reddit
The 9900k is just a lot older, and it's on a dead platform. The 5600x is 3.5 years newer, and the AM4 platform, while not the main focus anymore, still remains supported by AMD with many people remaining on it. As a result, there's still a healthy amount of stock remaining for its more popular CPUs.
As for the motherboard, pretty much any B550 one would work well. This is the one that I personally use, although there very well could be a better one around its price point that I'm unaware of.
FormulaGymBro@reddit
I have given your comment some research and come to the conclusion that I will buy the following on payday.
AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
Asrock B550 Phantom Gaming 4
I used to have a ma610p cooler., which had a variety of problems for me. Is my new low profile cooler going to cut it with my new CPU or do i need to explore a new fan as well?
TehEpicGuy101@reddit
I'm not super knowledgeable on coolers, so I wouldn't know. However, if you do want to buy a separate new cooler, then there's some solid options like this for only around $20, so you don't have to worry about breaking the bank. As a side note, the 5600x already includes a free stock cooler, which is enough to get the job done on its own (although it can get quite loud).
Also, is there any reason why you chose to 5700x instead? It provides very little increase in gaming performance, and it'll doesn't include the free stock cooler that I mentioned for the 5600x.

TehEpicGuy101@reddit
Ahhh, ok then. Well, best of luck with the upgrade!

Interesting. What's the catch? What makes the i9-9900K more expensive, why is the Ryzen 5 5600x cheaper?

My amd radeon rx5700xt broke. I saw a used xfx qick rx 6700 xt that’s within my budget, but I only have a 600w PSU (80+ platinum). My cpu is only a Ryzen 5 2600. Eventually, I am planning to upgrade to a Ryzen 5 5600 (or maybe a 5700x) and upgrade to a 750w PSU.
How bad/ok of an idea would it be to get the rx 6700 xt first, so that i can use my pc, then go with my cpu/psu upgrades when I have the budget?

You should be perfectly fine to do that. The TDP of the 6700XT is only 5 higher than the 5700XT (230 vs 225), so they'll both take up nearly the same amount of power.
mangyon@reddit
Awesome, that’s good to know. Happy cake day!
JA7E@reddit
I currently have a Ryzen 5 5600X and an RTX 3050. I’m considering upgrading to improve overall performance, but I’m unsure if upgrading just the GPU would lead to a bottleneck. Should I upgrade both components, or is there a GPU that would provide a significant performance boost without causing a bottleneck?
Protonion@reddit
Where the bottleneck is depends entirely on what games you play and at what settings, but the 5600X is a very capable CPU, it'll hold up well with a graphics card upgrade, especially if you're playing at 1440p or 4k.
JA7E@reddit
What graphics card upgrade do you recommend? I'm playing on 1080p
djGLCKR@reddit
It'll depend on your budget and your current power supply.
The cheapest upgrade with a similar power consumption (using a single 8-pin connector) would be an RX 6650 XT or RX 7600 (non-XT) for $230-250-ish. The recommended card for the resolution (and even for 1440p) would be an RX 6700 XT or RX 6750 XT for $300-320-ish, and the stopping point (aka overkill for the resolution but would work wonders if you upgrade to a 1440p monitor) would be either an RX 6800 (non-XT) or an RX 7700 XT for \~$375-380.
JA7E@reddit
I have a 550W power supply, and according to PCPartPicker, the wattage is sufficient for the 7800 XT, which someone recommended to me. If I do get that, should I upgrade my monitor to 1440p or focus on upgrading the CPU next?
esecene@reddit
Hi there!
I'm building my PC after several years since my last one, and I'm super overwhelmed. I want to plau AAA games, 1440p 60FPS or above.
The one I'm checking right now has the following specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X 4.7 GHZ Motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING B650M PLUS WiFi RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR5 6000MHz 32GB 2x16GB CL30 GPU: RTX 4070 Super
How's it looking in general? Thanks a ton!
ThisDumbApp@reddit
Looks good! Could in theory throw the 7900GRE in, instead of the 4070 Super as its very slightly faster (probably cheaper?) if you arent big into Ray Tracing and Nvidia features. Either one will run anything above 60fps.
esecene@reddit
Appreciated! I'll check that GPU out too
alextransza@reddit
I recently upgraded my motherboard, CPU, and RAM and started encountering this issue. My computer boots up just fine and sometimes both my HDMI and all my Display ports suddenly stop working. All of my fans are still running normally and a power cycle usually fixes this issue. Does anyone know what this issue might be? I have tried unplugging and replugging power cables to my GPU. TIA.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Did you try updating the BIOS?
Reseat the RAM? Toggle the XMP/EXPO profiles?
See if quick start/quick boot is enabled or disabled?
Reinstall your various drivers? Specifically I'm thinking chipset and Graphics drivers.
Due_Recognition_3890@reddit
I want to sell some PC components on eBay. What's the best way to sell a heatsink with fans? Can the two fans and heatsink go in the same anti-static bag?
Protonion@reddit
If they fit, sure. But you don't need an antistatic bag for them in the first place. Fans and coolers ship in basic cardboard boxes from the factory, they aren't static-sensitive.
Due_Recognition_3890@reddit
Oh okay thanks, so just bubble-wrap is okay, and paper for filler?
Protonion@reddit
Yup

Minected@reddit
Is there anything I need to be careful about when looking to purchase a motherboard?
I'm wanting to upgrade my 2700X into a 7600X at the moment because of the CPU sale going on. I also want to upgrade my motherboard for mostly personal reasons, tbh, even though I don't know if I'll actually get anything worthwhile out of it.
I currently have an X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming Motherboard. I'm pretty sure I could just update the BIOS so it would be compatible with the new CPU and keep the motherboard and save money, but I actively want to replace it.
It seems there are like 40 billion different motherboards out there, though, so I'm having a difficult time understanding how I can narrow down my choices.
kaje@reddit
That is not true. Your CPU and mobo are socket AM4. The 7600X is socket AM5. You also need new RAM, DDR5, to go with AM5.
Minected@reddit
Oh sick, so I don't even need a reason to upgrade. I actually have to. RAM I wanted to update anyways so that's fine, I was actually looking to upgrade to DDR5.
So now knowing that AM5 is a thing (I knew different sockets were an issue, but it was unclear which of the many acronyms in a product's title was that one), it seems like I'll probably be okay with something like a MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk? That's the one I was leaning towards purchasing anyways.
I think I just have one final question, though: Would I also need to update my storage? I'm currently using this guy for reference.
I want to update to at least 2TB eventually anyways because games are getting absolutely massive nowadays, but would I be okay holding that off and still have a functional computer with my current storage?
Shadow_Kawazaki@reddit
I'm planning on upgrading the CPU & GPU from my PowerSpec G164 prebuilt to a Ryzen 9 5950X and an RX 7600 XT 16GB. Are there any other possible points of friction I should know about, like with the motherboard or power supply, or will these be compatible upgrades?
kaje@reddit
How is anyone supposed to know if you don't list the mobo or power supply or any specs?
Shadow_Kawazaki@reddit
Since it seems like micro center has removed it from their website so I can't view the specs that way anymore, this Reddit post has them.
https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/s/WJL2Tf3Vdg
Based on what's here, it seems to have a 650W PSU and an ASRock B450M/AC mobo
kaje@reddit
What are you using the PC for?
Shadow_Kawazaki@reddit
Gaming
kaje@reddit
You don't need a 16 core CPU for gaming, the 5950X will barely perform better than an 8-core 5700X. The 5700X3D with its extra cache will outperform the 5950X in games.
Shadow_Kawazaki@reddit
Okay, that's good to know. The only reason I was even considering it was because it was on a pretty steep sale on Newegg, but in that case, I'll look for a 5700X instead
josecouvi@reddit
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XmRqkf Does this build look ok for a 1080p gaming build? I adjusted prices based on some local listings for used parts. Only thing I'm 100% attached to is the CPU as I already bought it and maybe the case as a friend gave it to me for free. Planning on using this for light 1080p gaming and potentially some video editing, but nothing super intensive.
tribital@reddit
Upgrading my current build from i5-12600K / 4070 to a 7900XT GPU.
Should I keep the CPU or upgrade it? Intel only because mobo
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Shop around, bestbuy had a fire sale on 12th gen CPUs just a week or two ago, the 12900k was only $160.
You should consider your CPU cooler and power supply when looking at options, both the 13th and 14th gen CPUs can pull more power than the 12th gen. Which may require another 4-pin or 8-pin power cable for the CPU. (if your motherboard offers those ports).
Some games may not see huge improvements, but you could be looking at a 10 - 50fps difference from the CPU alone;

Keep it, it's still modern and really fast. It won't really hold you back unless you only play CPU-limited games and want ALL the frames, instead of a lot of frames.
Mathmagician94@reddit
Do you guys expect the price of the new ryzen 7 9800x3d to lower in the next months, when demand goes down and supply up?
Also do you think buying a 4070ti super right now would be worth over waiting for the new 50X0 series early next year?
really unsure if i should spend now, or just wait, since I got no clue what to expect regarding prices of CPU and GPU
bestanonever@reddit
It depends, lol. If you are in the US, with new tariffs incoming, there might be a chance stuff is going to get more expensive later on. But, in the long term, AMD always discount their CPUs.
As for GPUs, I'd just wait since the next generation is really close and you want to buy somewhat high-end parts, which will come out first. Of course, if you want to get the 4070ti Super, which is a great card, you won't regret it, either. Doubt next-gen is going to be a revolution at that price range. At best, it's like 20-30% faster for the same price but Nvidia isn't so generous lately with anything that isn't the most expensive GPUs.
juseq@reddit
Best possible cpu for gaming only? Planning to build new rig but ive been away from tech few years so i need to catch up things.. so what would be best cpu for 4k gaming? Would be great if it cost like ~600-800€ range.

TemptedTemplar@reddit
9800x3d, its not even two weeks old yet.
The 7800x3d, 9700x and other Ryzen 9 options are not too far behind in most games, but can be found for much more reasonable prices. AMD is having trouble keeping up with demand, so prices are a tad inflated at the moment.
Intel has a few options close to the same performance level, their 13th and 14th gen options can be found for less but have their own problems aside from using a considerable amount more power. And while Intels newest Core Ultra series does fix the oxidation problems; they are new and thus more expensive for no reasonable performance gain.
bestanonever@reddit
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Best gaming CPU ever, right now. Second best is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, both of them on the AM5 platform. They actually cost about $450, so no need to spend a fortune for them.
TehEpicGuy101@reddit
9800X3D hands down. There's no real close competition.
Alezhnin1@reddit
Hi,
My friend currently got: Ryzen 5 2600 16gb ddr4@1500 GTX1060 Gigabyte B450 Aorus M
What would be the most cost efficient upgrade for CPU/GPU for that machine?
Playing Diablo 4 and regular home casual user.
bestanonever@reddit
Updating their BIOS to the latest stable version and reenable DOCP settings for RAM, get either the R5 5600 (non-X) or the 5700X. Same gaming performance, but the 5700X is a touch faster for productivity. Both are quite a bit faster than the R5 2600.
With a bit more budget, the R7 5700X3D is another even faster CPU upgrade, but maybe a bit out of their price range.
As for GPUs. Anything starting with the Radeon RX 6600/6600 XT/RTX 3060 or better would be 2X faster (or more!) than what they currently own.
IF1234@reddit
I'm looking to upgrade my RAM (16gb DDR4, 3600MHz CL17, XMP boosted) to 32GB, but it will likely be at a slower speed (3200MHz CL16 or 3600MHz CL18). How much does RAM speed matter with a 5800x3d for:
1) Image analysis software tasks - I'm using ImageJ/Fiji to do some automated analysis of 1200+ microscopy images. When I run the analysis macro, it maxes out my available RAM and pushes my CPU pretty hard (>90% usage in task manager). My current bottleneck seems to be the RAM because I can only analyze \~300 images at a time before the analysis fails and claims I ran out of RAM. If I upgrade to slower but higher capacity RAM will I see a significant effect on analysis speed? I know I don't have much details on how the macro works, so I'd welcome any best guesses
2) Gaming - I have a 4070 and primarily play at 1440p 60-120fps. Most games don't max out my RAM but I like to multitask and run tons of chrome tabs while I play
thanks
R0gueA@reddit
Maybe someone smarter than me will have a better answer, but as far as I understand when it comes to RAM speeds is the differences start to plateau quite a lot per generation. Example is going from stock 2333MHz to 2600 or 2800 is big, especially up to 3200MHz from 2333, but after that it begins to be significantly less important. So going from 3600 down to 3200 you probably won't notice. This is all assuming on a RAM test you were running 95-100% usage on RAM during analysis. If you're not maxing your current RAM out, then stick with the 3600 speeds for your analysis.
cosmiclemonaide@reddit
Hello! So i've been going round and round trying to decide on a CPU for my new build. I understand the 7800x3d is widely considered the best cpu for gaming around however unless it magically drops $100 or so it is not in the cards for me. I mainly play games like fortnite, minecraft, and smite which are all pretty cpu intensive. I also am an avid multitasker and often have a million things open at once. I am somewhat near a microcenter so the 7600x3d would be in the cards however its going to be a while before I can get there so I am not sure what stock will look like at that point. Should I hold out and wait for the 7600x3d or are there better cpus for a similar pricepoint (under $400) that would be suited for what I'll be doing. I've seen good things about the 7700x and the 7900x but not sure if those would best suit my usage. Thanks in advance!
TehEpicGuy101@reddit
The 7600X3D is a very solid option for gaming performance if the 7800X3D or 9800X3D are out of your price range.
Unless you're in a rush to get a build put together, I'd hold out for the 7600X3D. CPU stock is generally more stable than GPU stock, and with the 7600X3D being a Microcenter exclusive, it's unlikely to be vanishing out of existence overnight.

My PSU's fan keeps making ricketing sound like an old fan which has lost its ball bearing or something is constantly rubbing against the fan. This only happens when its lying down, if I keep it sideways the noise goes away. Should I request a replacement as I bought it barely a month ago.
R0gueA@reddit
I would if it is still new. It may not be a problem on its side, but whatever is causing the problem while laying down will most likely only get worse over time.

Does having cache on NVME matter for boot / gaming, I'm looking at getting Crucial P3 Plus (CT2000P3PSSD8), but is it worth saving for a Samsung 9XX for cache?
djGLCKR@reddit
DRAM is mainly relevant for writes and the drive's longevity to an extent, not reads. Gaming is a read-heavy task, and you'd probably want to look at a different drive if you were to hammer it with file transfers due to the P3 Plus' "low endurance" (since it's a QLC-based drive so it only offers 440 TBW of endurance compared to the standard 1200 TBW for your regular TLC-based drive). And there are cheaper alternatives to the Samsung drives that come with DRAM.
If you're not going to be installing and uninstalling large games every other week, that P3 Plus will be more than enough.
TheSideJoe@reddit
Thank you for the explanation
aVarangian@reddit
I'd guess it's more important for writes than reads? But look up some benchmarks and let me know

PC started having stutters, like whatever I'm playing goes "out of focus" and focuses back
And I say it on brackets because it doesn't really, my inputs are not affected, but if I try to record something using instant replay, it says I don't have desktop recording enabled. I had 24.8.1 drivers and it started doing this yesterday, so I updated to 24.10 and it's still the same. The new drivers are also giving me less FPS on Black Ops 6 btw, I got 90+ on ultra and now I'm barely getting 100 on medium settings

Sometimes it doesn't happen, and when it does, it happens straight after I start playing (and it gets fixed with a PC reset) I'll look up game specific drivers anyways
aVarangian@reddit
by game-specific I mean a driver update that includes tweaks for that game. Sticking to the newest driver is fine

I want your opinion on this simple build ( https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gCkHNz ). is it fine to have the pcie 4.0 ssd here? Also any suggestions for another case as my brother currently has the same one. Thanks
djGLCKR@reddit
It's fine, the price difference between Gen 3 and 4 drives isn't that huge nowadays. I'd consider a different drive since Kingston has 3-4 variants of the NV2 with different parts and no easy way to determine which one you'll get. Assuming the US, the SP UD90 and the MSI Spatium M482 (directly from MSI) are cheaper than the NV2.
Ockvil@reddit
You could get a 2x16gb kit of DDR4-3200 for about the same price.
A 3060Ti for US$440 is absurdly overpriced. For around that amount, you could get a rx7800xt, which is roughly 50% more powerful in raster.
SSD should be fine, though as I recall the NV2 isn't that great. For a little cheaper you can get a MSI M482 2tb, which might even have a little better performance.
For my latest build, I went with a Montech case and found it to have a really nice combination of value, aesthetics, robustness, and build convenience.
Genji_Master@reddit
I forgot to mention that the gpu is from my brother's build so I won't be buying it. Your recommendations are quite nice, thanks for your input!
UndeadGodzilla@reddit
For the Lian Li O11D Evo XL, if I'm doing the upright GPU mount, should the side fans be intake or exhaust?
aVarangian@reddit
If the gpu fans are sucking air into its pcb then I'd do a low/medium-rpm intake.
UndeadGodzilla@reddit
That the thing, if I have an upright mounted GPU right next to those side fans, should the air be sucking out the passive heat dissipation of the GPU infront of it, or pushing cool air directly into the back of the GPU?
aVarangian@reddit
re-read it
imo they should be blowing in the same direction as the GPU fans
but you can always just swap the fan direction and compare stress test temps
DeCipher_L@reddit
Okay so I might want to buy a i5 13600k on the cheap.
One thing that I am not clear about with the chipset when they talk about overclocking. Are we talking about overclocking like... Custom profile and everything. Or overclocking like, the base 5Ghz or so advertised for the unlocked version.
Like do I need to get a Z790 Mobo to use the advertised 5Ghz or is a B760 fine?
aVarangian@reddit
Don't overclock it. If anything you should undervolt. This CPU is affected by intel's 13/14th gen fuckup, even if at lower rates.
n7_trekkie@reddit
They mean manual CPU overclocking. That's limited to z chipsets. Memory overclocking and CPU turbo boosting is available on B chipsets

My newly build PC unable to detect gpu/show display after I changing PSU orientation. It works fine before the change.
Able to get display after plugging into motherboard (igpu).
GPU rgb light is on when the PC is on.

I've tried resit the gpu, same result. =/

I just got my 9800x3d and planning to upgrade my pc tmrw. Can i just plug in my two old SSDs (one is boot the other for games) to the new motherboard?
I remember doing it to my current build going from r5 1600 to 5600x but that was till on AM4. This will be AM4 to AM5 now so im not sure.
aVarangian@reddit
Yes, but personally I'd make a fresh install. OEM OS license might also not carry over.
Parii_s@reddit
I'm looking to upgrade to AM5, eyeing out the Ryzen 5 7600x ($333.06 AUD) and I'm after a white motherboard that'll hopefully last the entire generation, any suggestions? (ATX, not mATX or iTX)
n7_trekkie@reddit
Can you get the Ryzen 7500F from AliExpress for a good discount?

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/CwjRsY/gigabyte-b650-aorus-elite-ax-ice-atx-am5-motherboard-b650-aorus-elite-ax-ice
Parii_s@reddit
Is AliExpress Trustworthy? I've heard some iffy things about PC Parts off of it.
n7_trekkie@reddit
For CPUs it's generally fine. They all roll out of the same factory lol
Parii_s@reddit
Oh, alright, well, that's good to know!
Seems like the 7500F is $100~ Cheaper than the 7600x including Shipping & Taxes.
However, my main concern would be Warranty, considering if it's bought in Australia, locally. I can simply walk down to the store & sort it out. However, through AliExpress, it'd seem difficult...
Also, this might be my anxiety talking, but the 7600x iGPU seems like it'd be nice to have it in case my GPU randomly kicks it, and I can't use my system without another card.
n7_trekkie@reddit
I get it, my understanding is that RMA in Australia is very very good. $100 for peace of mind might be worth it! It'll vary by person haha. Just personally, $125usd for a 7500F is a fairly low risk purchase. If it breaks after a year for no good reason, I wouldn't be super upset about it. You know?
Parii_s@reddit
Yeah, for sure.
Also, one more question.
What RAM Speed and CL do you recommend for the R5 7600x? I'm being told that 2x16GB 6000MHz CL36 or 30 is like the standard.
I lied, maybe another question, ahaha.
What Graphic's Card would pair well with the R5 7600x for AAA titles at 1080p Ultra (above 120fps~)
I'm completely open-minded to looking at the used market (with caution, of course), considering I've been seeing a lot of used cards for good deals, and I'm currently on a 3060 12GB which is doing some games fine, however struggles with VR and newer titles (and I'd like to pick up the new STALKER game and Subnautica 2 when those release.)
n7_trekkie@reddit
6000 cl30. If cl36 is a lot cheaper, that's fine. NBD
A used 3060 I bet would be fine. It's the most popular GPU, so it should be available.
Spending more is ok too. Like a used 3080 or 6900xt is totally fine
Parii_s@reddit
I'm currently on this card actually, got it for $380 AUD used in 2022 and it's been fine up until recent games like Space Marine 2 and Helldivers 2, haha.
However, when AMD & NVIDIA's next cards release, I might look at the used market for stuff like RTX 3080's, RTX 4070's, RX 6800 XT's and whatnot.
Also, It's $158 AUD for 2x16GB 6000MHz CL36 Vengeance RAM (https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/KXV2FT/corsair-vengeance-rgb-32-gb-2-x-16-gb-ddr5-6000-cl36-memory-cmh32gx5m2e6000c36w)
And $213 AUD for 2x16GB 6000MHz CL30 Vengeance RAM (https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/GD7scf/corsair-vengeance-rgb-32-gb-2-x-16-gb-ddr5-6000-cl30-memory-cmh32gx5m2b6000c30w)
Is the steep price difference worth the performance?
n7_trekkie@reddit
No, do ram opt 1
Parii_s@reddit
Cheers, and considering I'm on a 650W PSU, I should consider upgrading that too if I'm after a higher power card like a Used 3080, right?
If so, do you have any recommendations for fully modular PSUs that could support stronger cards in the future (I'm thinking maybe 850w?)
n7_trekkie@reddit
Try 650W out. I bet it'll be fine
PastasaurusRex@reddit
I've ordered an MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk motherboard for my 9800X3D. Will I need to flash a new BIOS update first, or will I be able to do it the EZ way after building the whole PC? Just want to be sure I don't damage the CPU
djGLCKR@reddit
The CPU won't get damaged. If the board doesn't support the chip right out of the box it'll simply fail to boot.
The box should have a manufacture date if not the serial number (should be the four digits after "010B") and that should give you a rough estimate of the BIOS that came with the board, but, it's not a definitive marking -- For instance, ASUS includes a small sticker next to the leftmost RAM slot with a serial code and the last four digits correspond to the BIOS version that came with the board.
Considering that support for the 9800X3D was added with the latest beta BIOS update (from October), there's a good chance you'll need to update it via BIOS Flashback.
PastasaurusRex@reddit
Thank you so much for the detailed answer!
n7_trekkie@reddit
Probably the easy way will work. depends when the board was manufactured
The_CreaTR@reddit
Thinking about upgrading my GPU, but i'm not sure if my motherboard would fall behind/needs to be upgraded first. How can i find out other thank just asking someone?
This is my current build:
-AMD Ryzen 5 2600
-MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX
-Radeon RX 580
-Corsais VENGEANCE LPX 16GB 3600MHZ
-Corsair TX650M
-HP 22" 144Hz 1920x1080 1ms monitor
I have no issues with running games so far, on heavier games i simply lower the graphics but i manage to play anything i want with a good experience. I would like to upgrade to a 4k monitor, but i am almost sure my GPU wouldn't handle it well so i thought maybe i should upgrade that first. The thing is i don't know if there is anything i should upgrade before that, like my motherboard maybe? I wouldn't know what the criteria would be to check how good my motherboard is.
Ockvil@reddit
Motherboard should be fine, in fact you could upgrade your CPU to something like a 5700x3d, either now or eventually. You may need to update the BIOS before you do so.
Yeah your 580 is not going to do it for anything but graphically-undemanding games at 4k. Depending on what you play, you might be able to get away with a 1440p card like a 6750xt — I know someone who does mostly strategy and simulation games at 4k with one. But if you play first-person perspective games, for 4k you'll probably need to go up to something like a 7900gre or 4070, at a minimum. Those may require a higher wattage PSU than 650W, though.
Upgrading your memory may also be a good idea, higher-end gaming rigs nowadays generally go for 32gb.

Than you so much! I was not on the right path haha

How do you know if RAM is CUDIMM? I saw the new intel chips perform way better with CUDIMM ram, but I’m having a hard time figuring out which dimms are or are not “clocked unbuffered.” Is high speed a reliable indicator?
Ockvil@reddit
It's specifically marked as such, see: https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-48gb-ddr5-6400/p/N82E16820374646
I don't know much about it, but here's the article that I first heard about it from, if you want to know some details: https://www.anandtech.com/show/21455/making-desktop-ddr5-even-faster-cudimms-debut-at-computex

Looking at getting a mini PC using a N100 cpu, found a decent one about £100.
My question is, would it be good enough for viewing 3D models/slicing 3D models? I'm not expecting Core i9 levels of speed but enough horse power to open an STL, do whatever checks I need (move the model around etc...) slice and print.
I'm thinking of having a mini PC that I can have next to my 3D printer, hooked up via usb, then I can terminal remote onto it from my main rig, and or use it directly next to the printer itself then do all my model viewing/slicing to send to the printer.
Protonion@reddit
Yeah it'll be plenty. Slicing wont be exactly instant but completely bearable. I'm using an old laptop with an i7-8550U for a similar purpose, which seems to have about exactly the same performance in CPU benchmarks as the N100, and it's completely fine for slicers. Most models slice in about 5 seconds.
meowwentthedino@reddit
Amazing, my 8700k primary rig is fine but I want to pop the printer in another room and have a terminal I can remote onto to usb print to my printer (as it's not network and I have GAS) then be able to use the pc locally too but primarily for printing.
Thanks for the heads up!

I'm building a pc towards gaming (1440p) and designing purposes (Revit, Archicad, Autocad) paired with some totally beginner-level 3D rendering (Twinmotion, D5).
CPU wise I had ended up with Ryzen 7900x but its price picked up 50 € in my country at 400€. Meanwhile Ryzen 7900 sits at 340 € and 7700x at 300 €.
Question is can I really reach 7900x performance with 7900 with just PBO enabled? If so, is there much difference between PBO-enabled-7900x and PBO-enabled-7900? Or both of these CPUs are too much for my needs and a Ryzen 7700x is enough for productivity, because gaming wise 7700x seems superior?

Can someone please explain to me why some builds with the same case have 8 fans (https://au.pcpartpicker.com/b/Z8kXsY) while others only have 5 (https://au.pcpartpicker.com/b/KrK323)? Is it because one has a better CPU cooler?
kaje@reddit
Both of those builds have 8 fans. it's a fishtank style case designed to show off the internals anyways. Loading it up with 8 RGB fans is mainly for aesthetic value.
Zealousideal-Car-338@reddit
Ah ok because I was reading the parts list for the second link and only counted 5 fans so that confused me. So since I want a similar look, should I buy 8 fans?
kaje@reddit
Both builds have 360mm AIOs that come with 3 fans. First build replaced the fans on the AIO with ones that match their other case fans. Second build got the same fans that come with the AIO for the case fans as well.
Zealousideal-Car-338@reddit
That makes so much sense now. Thank you so much

Regarding my pretty old PC. My Mobo+CPU combo does not support XMP so the max RAM speed i can run is 2400Mhz. 2400Mhz RAM are surprisingly rare now, so i bought a 16gb 2666Mhz ram to go with my existing 8gb 2400Mhz RAM. Anyway the 2666Mhz RAM seem to run at 2400Mhz and CPU-Z says Dual channel is working. This 24gb RAM array (8+16) wouldn't cause any trouble right?
Also, why does 3200Mhz and 3600Mhz RAMs only run upto 2133Mhz and not 2400Mhz while 2666Mhz support 2400Mhz?
Valoneria@reddit
You can't mix and match RAM speeds, whichever is the lowest, is the fastest they'll go in your system. So if you have 1 DIMM running at 2400mhz, and another DIMM that can run at 2666mhz, both will run at 2400Mhz, as it's the lowest denominator.
You're technically running mixed channel (dual channel + single channel), shouldn't be an issue though.
The speed of the RAM isn't dictated by the RAM itself, it's the motherboard that tells it to go whatever speed it's running.
FoxResponsible5462@reddit
Thanks, my question were more if 8gb and 16gb were an issue due to difference in size. And why 3200Mhz and 3600Mhz couldn't match 2400 Mhz while 2666Mhz could? (3200Mhz could only utilize 2133Mhz without XMP and not the 2400Mhz standard of my mobo)
kaje@reddit
If you bought JEDEC spec RAM, 3200 CL22, it should have an SPD profile to automatically run at the JEDEC spec your CPU supports.
If you bought XMP spec 3200 RAM with a lower CL, it only had an SPD profile for JEDEC spec 2133 and needs to be overclocked via XMP to advertised specs.
Protonion@reddit
Different sizes shouldn't be any more of an issue than mixing RAM in general.
They can, but you have to set the speed manually if the RAM doesn't include a profile for the speed you want to use. Generally RAM sticks include a profile for the fastest speed they're rated for, and another for a safe slow speed like 2400MHz or 2666MHz, but you can manually set the timings to any speed you want.

BitingChaos@reddit
I've been searching for a way too long trying to find info on this.
Is there any real difference between 30-40-40-96 vs. 30-36-36-96 timing when it comes to RAM? I know CL is the important part. I'm just not sure if the other numbers make that much of a difference, should be avoided, etc.
n7_trekkie@reddit
If the lower timings are just a little more expensive, then I'd spend the extra money on it. Likely won't be a big difference tho, don't need to feel bad about the slower choice
kia75@reddit
Ugh, I upgraded my ram from 32gb to 64 gb and now my CPU is 90 DEGREES!
Since I moved the radiator to my water cooler in order to get to the ram, I think I accidently did something to the cooler and need to reapply it and reapply paste. :-(
I'll do so this Friday, but is there anything I need to do when I open up my case? Get some canned air and clean it out?
Other that bumping the cooler somehow, I can't think of anything else that would cause my CPU to get so hot!
neezaruuu@reddit
Does having a new case help with cpu and gpu temps?
n7_trekkie@reddit
Depends on ventilation
neezaruuu@reddit
It’s a darkflash dlm21 case with a ryzen 5600 and an rx 7800xt. My gpu temps are around 78c minimum and my is always on 80c+
n7_trekkie@reddit
That case looks fine. Comes with several fans, right?
neezaruuu@reddit
I have 6 case fans
n7_trekkie@reddit
Yeah sounds fine. If your GPU genuinely doesn't go below 78C, then id say something is wrong with it and I'd investigate
bestanonever@reddit
If it's bigger and has better ventilation, yes. Some really bad cases can sufffocate your components and some really good ones can help them. A hot CPU will still be hot, but can run a touch fresher or boost for longer with a better case. Check thermal reviews before buying them.
Cindy-Moon@reddit
The start capacitor on my AMD Wraith Prism fried so I need a new CPU cooler.
