Why do gun owners always making fun of/mocking aftermarket polymer stocks on SKS?Do they suck?

As an owner of an sks and member of the sks sub, they don’t suck/aren’t necessary worse but the idea is that by switching out for after market parts you ‘ruin’ the value/historical relevance of the rifle. Essentially the sks is not viewed as much as a weapon or tool but more so a collectors item that should be preserved as perfectly as possible. Also a lot of anti aftermarket sentiment comes from people who permanently alter the rifle by drilling or grinding parts to modernize it, which many believe you should just buy a modern rifle than change one that has some historical value. This is my take from what I’ve seen on the sub feel free to add context or disagree.
bobbobersin@reddit
No idea, I think it's a nice option, it's not sportirizeing anything and the OEM stocks will still go right back on with no issues
sandalsofsafety@reddit
My Romanian SKS came in a Combat Exchange Monte Carlo stock, and it was awful. Terrible grip, added like five pounds to the weight of the gun, didn't fit nicely around the receiver, and the worst crime of all, the original stock is AWOL, possibly even thrown away.
aithan251@reddit
honestly it just depends looks gross in my opinion
Global_Theme864@reddit
Just to add on to what other people are saying, not only was the SKS the poor mans tacticool rifle in the 90s and 00s, the whole tacticool think wasn't nearly as ubiquitous as it is now so it looked even sillier to the majority of range users who were just there to sight in their deer rifle.
TheOneWhoKnocks76251@reddit
cause they dont look as good as wood stocks and sometimes folks do it cause they cant get an ak
Normaldude42@reddit
Pub g made me like the polymer stocks lol

They're ugly
Designer_Candidate_2@reddit
That advertisement is certainly worthy of being made fun of haha. It's hilariously cringy.
As far as the stocks go, many of them very much were terrible. I tried a few on my SKS back in the day and none of them fit perfectly and they were often weak in crucial areas. I think they also became a favorite among early Tacticool folks. The SKS was also a cheap gun years ago, and any affordable gun becomes the subject of modifications, and snobbery often manifests in situations like that. So there's a variety of reasons, some of them legitimate, and some stupid.
I still prefer wood stocks, but I enjoy that aesthetic overall.
thitherten04206@reddit
I have one because my late grandfather was a prepper still have the original wood furniture.
Mako_sato_ftw@reddit
hell, even if prices have gone up SKS' are still pretty cheap. average price for them on gunbroker is like 500 dollars still, which is significantly cheaper than a lot of new ARs and what not

Back in the day, these were the poor man’s Mini 14.
AsAlwaysYaBoi@reddit
Wouldn’t it technically be a mini 30
CyberSoldat21@reddit
A mini-30 that actually can shoot steel case.
AsAlwaysYaBoi@reddit
So I’m hearing sks > mini 30
CyberSoldat21@reddit
If you’re me with an abundance of steel case 7.62 that my dad left for me. Replacing it with brass case 7.62 is a lot of money lol
Worth-Sorry@reddit
You Just remind me of the ruger mini 30 in max Payne 3, that rifle is definetly furnished just as the sks on the pic, 10 rounds mag and polymer stock with a wire butt... Now i need to replay that game again. Thank you a**hole.

FoeTeen@reddit
Because older milsurp should be left alone. If you want a rifle in 7.62x39 with polymer furniture and a 30rd mag buy a quality import AK and have a field day. I know this is about polymer stocks on the SKS but these people usually take out the standard 10rd semi-internal SKS mag and replace it with some p.o.s. aftermarket 20 or 30 rounder leading to issues. LEAVE. RIFLE. ALONE.
Cliff_Doctor@reddit
The wood stock works great, has worked great in combat and it's a bit historical. Plus a lot of aftermarket SKS stuff can be variable in quality to say the least.
ReactionAble7945@reddit
OK,
I own 2 original SKSs. I think they are great for what they are. I will never look down on someone using one in original format because baby they work.
.
But what we saw back in the day....
There were the FN-FAL, M14, G3 REAL RIFLE MEN WHO HAD MONEY.
Then there were the Colt AR15 people who still had money.
Then there were the Ruger Ranch rifles and Mini-14s, AKs, these people had less money.
Then there were the people who bought SKS and then tried to make it into something they were not. They would add a poly stock. Then try to convert to duck mags or AK mags. Most of these conversions sucked. The SKS wasn't meant to have a scope, but they would always mount a scope which was CRAP on them. What was the bump firing spring thingy sold back then. There was a group of guys at the range one day and they all had them on their SKSs. They couldn't hit shit and that included the HUGE mound of dirt that was the backstop. .... They were kicked out a short time later. The hill billys and red necks looked down on guys using this type of SKS with useless BAD mods. I felt bad for some of them. They didn't know what they were doing just made their guns less reliable.
Revolutionary_Lie199@reddit
Oh the good old “Hell-Fire” springy thing. I watched a friend mess around with one on his SKS and about blow his face off adjusting it..safety off. God I can’t stand that crap, couldn’t then in the 90’s and even less today. Yep SKS is best in original form, stripper clips only. My first center fire rifle and I paid $79.95 for a clean Norinco and it is still fun. I also saw a different buddy with a version of the poly stock and sure enough the folding stock broke off.
ReactionAble7945@reddit
I bought a hell-fire. I went though 1 mag of 308 for my M1A. After, I thought I was real cool. Leaned the rifle up against something. If fell over on me and I got a nice scar from the burn mark.
I think I did two more with my ARs later on.
I just couldn't get into the idea of burning through a mag and not hitting the target.
BrokenAndDefective@reddit
No bubba! Don't chase that thrill please
ds1022@reddit
so i bought my sks at the marine corps exchange for $75 in the early 90s . They were selling 50rnd mags . Think of it this way you buy a drill at harbor freight. Then you see an ad for a side handle for $3 and a bit holder for $1 a battery that lasts 3xs longer for $ 10 (but it weighs 5 pounds} you don't have a lot in the drill so a few dollars more t spice it up whats the harm right?
pinesolthrowaway@reddit
Mostly because they are terrible and actively make the gun worse
I’ve seen polymer stocks on SKS’s that wouldn’t even retain the magazine assembly in the stock, the slightest nudge would send it tumbling out of the gun lmao
For whatever reason, the usual monte carlo stock has a comb that sits waaaaay too high, so now to use the sights, you’ve got to mash your face down at a terribly uncomfortable angle to even see them, it’s ridiculous
These are not problems the wooden stock versions have
Brookeofficial221@reddit
Monte Carlo stocks are made to raise your sight picture to use a scope. So the stock is doing what it’s supposed to.
flappy-doodles@reddit
I was sending a cousin a Yugo SKS. He was talking about putting a plastic stock on it. I said, "When you pick it up at your FFL, you'll probably change your mind." He called me after he picked it up and said that he wasn't expecting a basically new gun and that he'd never F around with the stock.
RaiderCat_12@reddit
Not only are they terrible, but they also LOOK terrible. I’d much rather have one of the “tactical” stocks made out of wood than having it be polymer. It would at the very least look better.
sinisteraxillary@reddit
I'm already ready for "real action".

“Triple SKS value” made me chuckle
thenerfviking@reddit
I mean it was true back then. You used to be able to get an SKS for like $70 to &100 in the 90s and 00s and so modifications that let you put on things like modern hunting scopes and stuff were considered highly desirable. No one was thinking of them as collector pieces we just wanted a cheap rifle to shoot meat with.

HangryPangs@reddit
Yeah they’re super corny and offer no advantage. But honestly that’s true for most aftermarket crap you can buy for firearms.
CKinWoodstock@reddit
Nope. Keep the wood. And for God’s sake, keep the stock mag and just learn to use stripper clips.
I will admit I’ve replaced the dust cover on mine with one having an attached Weaver rail, though.

KingofSkies@reddit
I think they were called archangel stocks.
Jack_547@reddit
In the 90s-00s, the gun world was very different. As such, the AR-15 was still a relatively expensive rifle. People had them, but it was nothing like today where they're the most popular semi-auto rifle available with a huge aftermarket. This is where the whole thing about the SKS being an ideal survivalist rifle came from, because at the time the SKS was a very affordable and objectively good rifle for the money.
At the time, these polymer stocks made sense as you could effectively modernize a good, reliable rifle and add things like vertical grips, flashlights, even optics to it to make a decent combat weapon you could hold as you watch Nutnfancy SHTF WROL EOTWAWKI militia tactics videos, while drinking a Pepsi Twist and throwing darts at an Osama Bin Laden dartboard.
People hate on them now though for three reasons:
-They still associate them with the people who bought them because they couldn't afford an AR or AK, and thus they appear cheap or too tacticool. The notion of SKS' being cheap has gone away sadly, as it's rare to see them at gun shows for less than $900 now.
As surplus SKS rifles dry up and prices raise, people stopped seeing them as inexpensive beater rifles, and instead, more as historical firearms that should be maintained and kept as close to factory configuration as possible. When you get rid of the wood stock and replace it with a Tapco one, it's seen less as modernizing and more like bubbaing something that was already good to begin with. It's not 2004 where you bought an SKS with all accessories for $100 and 800 rounds of bulk 7.62x39 for $50, so why ruin a vintage rifle when you could buy a PSA AR-15 for under $600?
A lot of these stocks weren't that great to begin with, from bad ergonomics, compatibility issues, or the general perception that they're just inferior to the standard wooden stock. Some also were done with various magazine conversions which ranged from okay to constant failures to feed or mags falling out. In my experience they're all over the place. I used one that had a side folding stock that wasn't that bad and actually pretty usable, but I also handled one that had a stupidly heavy polymer rail system, and the stock sat at a weird angle.
EchoNineThree@reddit
Great post. I just happened to find a NOS Bell and Carlson SKS stock if anyone is interested. HMU.

I made the mistake of putting my 10/22 in a TAPCO stock once, never again. I couldn't imagine doing that to my SKS now that I have one.
lakerschampions@reddit
This may be sacrilege, but I thoroughly enjoy the Tapco stock on an SKS. They’re not rare enough to cry about modifying them.

Had the stock in the first picture as it was given to me for free. Tested it out in 3 different sks rifles. All 3 barreled action wobbled in it badly. Chucked it in the trash.

ls_445@reddit
Well, it's because a lot of people are purists and see them as classic military surplus rifles. Therefore, any aftermarket additions are "Bubba" behavior
Worth-Sorry@reddit
As long as you don't chopp, modify or basically destroy any part of the firearm that later couldnt be put back on place to keep the historical (and market) value that it had before you shouldn't be considered a Bubba. So yeah save that m1 garand wood stock and shove in a tactical EBR chasis and a 30 rounds detachable magazine if you want
Jolly-Hovercraft3777@reddit
This is my opinion as well. Some people misplace their original parts, but that's a separate problem. If you are organized and retain the ability to revert to milsurp configuration, I don't have any problem with that.
But I'm more forgiving than some. 😆
Nikablah1884@reddit
In my PERSONAL experience, even though it's lighter, lighter isn't always better and they throw off the balance of the rifle and make it "weird" to aim.
ld987@reddit
At least they were smart enough to put real action in quotes, for a variety of reasons.
Driver2900@reddit
I like the line "your ordinary sks becomes sheer excitement when you put on this polymer stock"
PsychoTexan@reddit
It’s often a first step of bubbanization of the SKS to make it tacticool. Often to the degradation of the gun.
Spacejim3000@reddit
Wood is fine
Activision19@reddit
I put a polymer stock on my SKS for a while back in the mid 2000’s. It did absolutely nothing to improve ergonomics or accuracy. It most just made the gun bulkier, heavier and a lot harder to take apart. You had to unscrew two screws on the grip to remove a grip panel to get the trigger pack out so you could take the action out of the stock.
