Maybe we should call H5N1, "US Flu".
Are there any Black Friday deals on Aura FFP3 respirator masks?
howdocomputerdo@reddit
It's ok, guys, RFK Jr. Will handle it
Eve_O@reddit
He sure will!
Why, he already ~~tweeted~~ Xed that he was going to make sure the FDA no longer prevented people from getting all the healthy things in life like sunshine, exercise, and raw milk.
It'll be so nice for all Americans to be able to go outside again, maybe run a few laps, do some jumping jacks, or some shit like that, and have a nice glass of fresh milk straight from the teat--just like God intended!
^(Do I need to /s this?)

Hold up. Stem cells? Republicans are okay with unbanning stem cells that come from fetuses so they can be experimented on????? ???? ... ???! 🤷‍♀️

But the raw milk thing is the goofiest. Raw milk isn't meant to be drunk for a reason.

I salute raw milk drinkers as the pioneers in 21st Century evolutionary efforts. o7
Hey_Look_80085@reddit
Yes the stomach they evolve will see them through the dark future where any teet in a storm will offer the promise of a new day.
Superfluous_GGG@reddit
Yeah, didn't realise the FDA was against sunshine and exercise. I'd ask what RFK Jr is on, but he tipped his hat at the start of the list.
Crackshaw@reddit
You joke, but they genuinely believe that homeopathy really does work, the FDA is just being paid off by Big Pharma to say it doesn't and to pump pharmaceuticals in food to keep people sick
astrobeen@reddit
Do you know what they call holistic medicine when it actually works? They call it “medicine”.
Chaoticrabbit@reddit
I still remember when my cat wasn't eating and was sluggish. Took him to an alternative homeopathy vet and they said he needed more minerals and to drink a special mineral water. Took him to a real vet and they said lymphoma. I'm sure there's some good nuggets of real things that work in homeopathy (Ginger for motion sickness, garlic, clove oil) but I really have a hard time trusting any homeopathic "doctor" and most treatments.
Potato_Catt@reddit
Yeah. It made sense like, 100+ years ago when modern medicine consisted of opium, mercury, and literal poisons. And a lot of surgery without antibiotics or anesthesia. In that case, you could have been much better without a doctor. But not now with things that actually work.

The post does read like something written by someone who is not in their right mind. But it's actually standard right wing method:

It doesn't work like that unfortunately: when the (in)actions of the entire system are trying to kill you, fixing this or that department will not work against the multi-crisis.
Like, OK, your food is not poison, but you can't afford it.
Or you can afford it, but you're shot on the street because you're Black.
Or you're sent into the meat-grinder and mind-grinder of war.
Or you're brainwashed by the (re)education system / mass media.
Or you're swept away by the next climate calamity.
Or you're body, mind and soul are ground to dust day after day, year after year, for the oligarch's new car/yacht/jet/spaceship

Can we be sure that this isn't just all from animals?
devadander23@reddit
Not many animals use toilets
Superfluous_GGG@reddit
Doesn't the waste water include run off from farms? Or is this strictly human waste water?
DidntWatchTheNews@reddit
No farms in city in Cali. Texas yes. Cali not so much.
Significant-Act9196@reddit
Not in the San Jose area. Very few farms and about 7 million people live between here and San Francisco
Hey_Look_80085@reddit
Not true. Go to google maps, go to san jose, search nearby farm, and chicken farm.
You don't need a lot of farms, you just need enough to be sending water down the pipes.
DidntWatchTheNews@reddit
That's what I said.
In Texas, the waste water numbers often include that of ranchers and slaughter houses, even when looking at numbers from an urban center.
In California, the farms are out in the middle of no where. You don't have cattle on a corner plot
Hey_Look_80085@reddit
Not true. Go to google maps, go to san francisco, search nearby farm, and chicken farm.
Superfluous_GGG@reddit
Ah. That, then, sounds like it'd be a problem.
YoSoyZarkMuckerberg@reddit
Animals don't need to use toilets to infect humans. The infected humans then use the toilets.
devadander23@reddit
I think you missed the point. The samples collected are from human waste, not animal
YoSoyZarkMuckerberg@reddit
No shit. The samples are from people infected by sick animals. What point did I miss?
devadander23@reddit
No shit. The original comment I responded to asked if the positive samples were all from animals. They are not. They are human samples. Not sure why you’re arguing
YoSoyZarkMuckerberg@reddit
Arguing? I'm just contributing to the fucking discussion.
YoSoyZarkMuckerberg@reddit
It is all from human contact with infected animals. The virus does not transmit h2h....yet.
devadander23@reddit
Correct. But the sewage samples were of human waste, not animal.
YoSoyZarkMuckerberg@reddit
Then why it be "just all from animals?"
I mean to say that technically, yes, it's all 100% from infected animals infecting humans. But not at all from animal waste going down the toilet.
PlausiblyCoincident@reddit
It probably is almost all from wild animals. They shit outside, it rains, virus particles wash into the watershed and get discovered from testing. Any place that has infected sea birds or migrating geese will see rises in detection. It shouldn't be assumed that these are all undetected human cases, because they likely are not.
hardleft121@reddit (OP)
SS: Recent flare-up of H5N1 detection in wastewater. 19 sites nationwide with the vast majority in urban areas around San Francisco and San Jose. Relevant due to possible calamity. Experts are still unsure why Texas had 10 of 10 cities tested positive in the spring from non animal-runoff locals like Dallas.
theCaitiff@reddit
I've got a hypothesis...
Currently our understanding of H5N1 in humans is based almost entirely off of a scant handful of people who became sick enough to be hospitalized. Of those people who were hospitalized, were tested for influenza, and then had the specific type of influenza further tested to be H5N1, it's a pretty deadly disease.
However, the presence of H5N1 in wastewater coming from cities and densely populated areas in Texas and California would logically lead us to assume that some people are getting sick and not winding up in a hospital or getting swabbed for influenza.
What if, and this is crazy, H5N1 is a lot more widespread among humans than we thought but just isn't hospitalizing people to the point we test them?
Hey_Look_80085@reddit
Logic is wrong. People eat chicken EVERYWHERE, everything the chicken touches has the virus, x% of everything the chicken touches gets washed where it puts the virus into the water treatement cycle.
hardleft121@reddit (OP)
i also think something like you describe is happening
when it was in dallas in the spring, i experienced it. there are no dairy farms or lots in dallas county, yet it was everywhere. there is a method of transmission into people, that is not understood.
i told my sister i thought i had a light case of bird flu, because the symptoms were so weird, and felt real dumb for saying so at the time. i'm very not a hypochondriac. felt weird. my eye got very red and would not stop seeping green/white stuff. when i would hold a napkin to my eye, it would be pink like diluted blood in the tears. lasted 5 days, and i took a picture of my eye, it semi prolapsed, then got better. in the months that followed they announced wastewater data of my county, from then. i was a little shocked to have maybe been right.
theCaitiff@reddit
The conjunctivitis (eye infection with gunk) is a huge red flag from what I've read, yeah you might have had it.
It does cast some serious shade on the mortality rates people worry about though. If it is spreading quietly throughout the country, then the numbers aren't nearly as high as claimed. But then again, if Covid has taught us anything it's that even a 1-3% cfr can still be pretty bad.
Globalboy70@reddit
My understanding is there is at least two strains, one with a high mortality rate and one like a cold. So unless we do extensive testing we are flying blind.

Don’t say “our”. WE didn’t create this, we are victims, and it’s total fucking bullshit that corporations and government have made us the citizens slash consumers take responsibility for the absolute disregard of the planet (ie “turn off your lights when you leave a room!” “Don’t use AC more than you have to” “recycle!”) while they flit around in their PJs, dump millions of gallons of oil in the oceans, and decimate our earth etc etc etc.

Their consumption is just the cherry on top of the shit cake, to highlight their hypocrisy.
IamInfuser@reddit
We are both the victims and the abusers in this unsustainable system. Sure, there's a lot of people who are trying to make lifestyle changes so their way of life is more sustainable, but they are overshadowed by those who just want to be left alone and not have their consumption criticized.
I agree that the corporations (made up of people) and government (also made up of people) are operating infficiently and unsustainably, but their production and waste is a reflection of the individual massives that just want to live comfortably. And the massives are unsustainable. It's like the chicken or the eg story, basically. But, we're both victims and abusers because we're trapped.
g00fyg00ber741@reddit
i would almost agree with you, but people refuse to wear masks, and they keep eating animal agriculture products, so i’m not sure how we can absolve everyone else entirely of any responsibility when it comes to things like covid and bird flu.
CaonachDraoi@reddit
we certainly have more responsibility for it than someone who doesn’t use electricity and consume oil etc. both can be true, billionaires can be emitting a fuck ton and average citizens of the imperial core can be living ridiculously overconsumptive lifestyles which also emit a fuck ton.

My understanding is the teenager that is in critical condition with it, I believe maybe in Ontario, they aren't sure where they got it. Doctors believe it might be one or two mutations away from being able to be H2H.
Goofygrrrl@reddit
There is a lot of evidence suggesting they got it from the family dog. The dog was euthanized just prior to the patient getting sick.
kylerae@reddit
According to most of the articles I see they tested the dog and it was negative. Sounds like they tested multiple animals they had come into contact with and they were all negative too. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-investigation-continues-but-source-of-bc-teens-avian-flu-diagnosis-may/
Goofygrrrl@reddit
My understanding is the full Genotype of the virus was just released today and it shows serial Mammalian transfers of this particular strain. The current thought is Wild Bird to Domestic cat to Domestic Dog to the affected patient. But I will defer to the virologists on this one. The article you referenced was prior to the genetic sequencing showing the multi species polymerase signals.
