It has a lot to do with us. After the end of the Soviet Union, Ukraine had one of the largest stockpiles of nukes on earth and we negotiated with them to denuclearize in exchange for future protection. Now we are here.

Unless you are saying that to suggest it isn't true. The statement as written does have an implied error: "future protection" was not a security guarantee from anything other than nuclear attack, but rather a security assurance from both the US and Russia that they would both to respect Ukraine 1994 borders and a few other things. Russia was in clear violation of this circa 2014 and since under the claim that the Maidan Revolution invalidated the treaty because it was now a new state and not Ukraine (Russia invaded Crimea 5 days after Viktor Yanukovych was removed from office). The US and others have officially denounced that nonsense excuse, but there's no enforcement clause obligating the US to do anything about it. Some argue that the context around the memorandum implies more, and it certainly was what sparked US investment in Ukrainian defense, but there's no security guanrantee.

But you are aware that if governments adopted the policy you just described, a large country could and eventually would just conquer all the small countries around them just like countries did for centuries and we could return to the age of Empires like it's the late 1800s where eastern Europe is just 4 empires spanning the whole region.

Unfortunately, it has a ton to do with us & our shit foreign policy since 1991. War should've never started to begin with, could have been made VERY clear to Russia years ago that Ukraine would not enter the NATO bloc. Other factors included in this, but yeah...

Instead, we tried to play 4D chess & had our bluff called. Now, here we are. Still embarrassing AF for Russia (current status), but at the expense of Ukrainian blood & American tax payer.

Nonsense - the notion that this is abt Russia not wanting Nato on it's border was a Putin smoke-screen. They want control of Ukraine. Russia took Crimea in 2014 b/c they needed it to support their littoral navy. Gorby should never have given it away. They also took bits of Donbas at that time. Then in 2022 that decided they disliked the government turning farther toward the West and expanded their military. What Russia objected to is a 2021 Ukraine on-track to join the EU in the 2030s.

This really does suck. It's pretty damning on the Biden administration to do these things to escalate the situation when they'll be gone in a couple months.

It's pretty obvious this is just an attempt to increase tensions so there can't be a negotiated settlement......which is what Trump wants. And.....if anyone reaches out to Putin and says, "Can you please hold tight for 60 days? Please try not to react?" then that person will be labeled a "Russian asset".

I guess on one hand, I appreciate the game theory of it all: Dealing the incoming administration a shitty hand. I wish I could say I've never been petulant in my adult professional life. It's a shame they're doing it with things that kill people though.

Right now the war is effectively over. It just is going to take EU and NATO a couple more years to admit to it.

In the meantime news media is going to continue to pump out information about how Russia is falling apart and Ukraine is on the brink of turning things around. Because that is what they are being told by the "experts" and don't give a shit about what actually is going on.

People can go ahead and hate it all they want and call Russia the aggressor and how Putin sucks and etc etc etc. But it doesn't matter how you feel about it.
