New build deciding between RTX 4070 Super / RX 7900GRE / Radeon RX 6800 XT

I'm relatively new to building PCs.
I'm hoping to get a few things out of this build:
- Gaming at 60fps+ 1440p. The games which interest me at the moment are Elden Ring, Resident Evil Village, Minecraft, etc as well as some older games e.g Fallout 4
- Want to also use it as a Plex server (5 or fewer clients)
- Desktop use and also Steam Remote Play in a different room (wifi, on Mac screen 60hz, 1792x1120p)
the parts I'm selecting are based on what's available in Ontario, Canada.
Here's what I've picked out so far:
Case: CORSAIR 3000D RGB Tempered Glass Mid-Tower
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600
RAM: TeamGroup T-FORCE DELTA RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30
Motherboard: MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi Gaming Motherboard
PSU: Corsair CX Series 750 Watt ATX/EPS Modular
Storage: WD BLACK 2TB SN850X NVMe Internal Gaming SSD
Monitor: Acer Nitro 27" WQHD 2560x1440 IPS 180Hz 0.5ms VG272U V3BMIIPX
(FreeSync and G-Sync compatible)
GPU: This is where I'm struggling:
ASUS TUF RTX 4070 S - 929 CAD
ASUS DUAL RTX 4070 S - 830 CAD, high memory temps worry me (tbh, not sure what I'm worried about!)
Radeon RX 7900 GRE - 755 CAD, I worry I'll miss out on ray tracing / dlss
Radeon RX 6800 XT - 642 CAD, I worry I'll miss out on ray tracing / dlss
GeForce RTX 4060 Ti - 525 CAD, weaker but I wonder if dlss can help make up for it
The questions on my mind are:
Are the memory temps enough of a concern to make the TUF worth it over the DUAL?
The Radeon RX 6800 XT price is tempting. Is the 4070S worth the additional 200 CAD?
Do trends indicate GeForce RTX 4060 Ti may not be powerful enough in a few years?
Also general feedback of any sort on the build is welcome.
Thanks!

I can run elden ring maxed out in 4k, 60fps on an rx 6800. All of these cards will do the trick
spud8385@reddit
Do you have the same issue that I do with my 6950XT? Namely that it's a locked 60 but every now and again it will stop for a second then speed up to catch up. I haven't been able to fix this!
FinancialRip2008@reddit
that sounds like a cpu or drive issue
spud8385@reddit
Yeah maybe but I can't diagnose it. Running on a 7700X with 32gb of 3000 CL36 ram, installed on a 2tb SN850X
nikilization@reddit
I have two systems, one with 7800x3d and the other with a 10700f (10700for living because tv is only 60hz and the parts were lying around). Both systems hitch, but the 7800x3d system stops after the first couple of minutes of gameplay, the 10700f system hitches more and for longer, but eventually stops as well. Similar thing happens when i use thermal scopes in bf 2042, so i think it’s a cpu or texture loading issue
FinancialRip2008@reddit
oh, that should be plenty fast. fwiw i don't have any stuttering/hitching in elden ring on my 12600k/6900xt build.

7900GRE
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit
I second this. Just bought a XFX 7900 GRE and couldn’t be happier. Everything I play I set to Ultra at 1440P and haven’t had an issue with low frames.
Ok_Combination_6881@reddit
Rau tracing you are not missing much. In terms of fsr yes it is that much worse. I personally used both brands. Fsr and amd frame gen just looks way worse, and I also edit videos on the side so I’ve been super grateful lately that I have nvidia because cuda is just that good. Your best bet purely for gaming would be the gre. If you even plan on doing anything remotely other than gaming go with nvidia
Bulky_Sun_6299@reddit
Ray Tracing you are not missing much? This is probably the words of someone who has never used it :) Cyberpunk 2077, Black Myth Wukong ... Turning RT on and off feels like 2 different games. Trust me you don't want to miss that experience to see how far the technology has come.
Bombilakus@reddit
At a cost of 50% frames?
Bulky_Sun_6299@reddit
What do you want in a AAA game? The best experience or useless fps? Lots of AMD fanboys here, so arguing is a waste of time, look at the sales numbers, that says it all.
FinancialRip2008@reddit
it's the same picture
IndyPFL@reddit
I have a 4070 Super and can definitively say that needing to turn on framegen just to get the same fps I got with a 3070 without ray tracing makes it not worth it.
Dying Light 2 becomes unplayable without framegen at RT Ultra settings, even with DLSS upscaling enabled. Massive fps drops at night that makes fast parkour stuttery and difficult to enjoy whatsoever.
Cyberpunk is somehow more stable while on foot, but it's just not worth it imo because I still ended up losing a ton of performance unless I used framegen.
Hitman 3 drops into the 60s, my 3070 could get a locked 80+ fps without RT.
If you want raw performance and more VRAM per buck, AMD is the better option. If you want better upscaling, framegen and multitasking (Blender and other rendering software) then Nvidia is a better bet.
The sales numbers are still in Nvidia's favor because AMD 1. Struggles with performance/watt and is known to run hotter. Not the most blatant turn-off, but it matters. And 2. Because AMD used to have pretty frequent driver issues which they've since fixed.
Single_Awareness7995@reddit
Bro i love amd and I'm with you. I run ray tracing on high with all the other settings on ultra and radeon boost for fg at 1920x1080. It makes games so much prettier and if i run without ray tracing only like half the card is utilized, so its really not a gigantic drop in performance, especially since most people are limited to 60 or 120fps anyway, which vsync/gsync/amdsync are really all you wanna use anyway to avoid screen tearing. I mean it's cool that you can hit 450fps in hallow knight but how much of that is really needed.
Ok_Combination_6881@reddit
Well I love to try ray tracing but my 4050 laptop says other wise
Antenoralol@reddit
Not everyone plays those games though.
It solely depends on his use case and his games.
Like for me, I'm an MMO player so RT isn't a selling point.
Judge_Bredd_UK@reddit
I can appreciate the fact that you like the technology and I'm glad you're enjoying it but some of us don't use it at all. I play a tonne of games but they're mostly multiplayer games and all I'm looking for is raw performance, Ray tracing looks nice but I usually turn it off after a while anyway.
StewTheDuder@reddit
The performance cost and hardware needed to do it at the level where it really makes a difference, and in only a handful of games, simply isn’t worth it to most. I’ll worry about RT more in 2-3 years. By then the 4070 won’t be running it well anyways. Mine as well go for raw power in his price range atm.
BedroomRemarkable897@reddit
Nah. Only in 2 games you can see difference, and I do not play that 2 games.
MrFartsalotalot@reddit
Yeah... no. Placebo effect. At least my opinion
StewTheDuder@reddit
AMDs frame gen is right there with Nvidias. Nvidia just has the better upscaler.
Ok_Combination_6881@reddit
Not in my experience, in ghost of tushima, AMD frame gen just makes the grass look more blurry compared to dlss
StewTheDuder@reddit
It’s been tested by HU and other YT channels. They’re very similar. I used it on GoT as well, just beat the game actually, and at 4k on an LG C3 it looked and ran phenomenal
OrganTrafficker900@reddit
My eyes are horrible so the difference between DLSS and FSR super small, on top of it I use Lossless Scaling and I am playing Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1440p Ultra at 240 fps lmao
Ok_Combination_6881@reddit
Ah, I see you are a lossless scaling enjoyer
Aggressive_Ask89144@reddit
7900 XT for the price of the 4070S 🗿🍷
ihavepolio@reddit
7900XT or 4070S Ti? If the prices were exactly the same and you’re upgrading from 2060 to OLED 34” 1440p 165hz monitor. Probably whatever has the better deal?
CallingAllShawns@reddit
i just bought a 7900 GRE a week ago and it’s been great. according to gamer nexus’s review, the only reason to get a super over the gre is if you care about heavy ray tracing like in cyberpunk. it is blowing my expectations out of the water for 1440p gaming.
vensango@reddit
RT is overrated DLSS is no better or worse than FSR, it just depends on how they're implemented (both can be implemented poorly or good depending on the game.
ASUS is a shit brand avoid them.
The 7900 GRE is a stronger card than a 4070 Super but takes more of a performance hit than the Super for raytracing but also has more VRAM.
Think of it this way - you won't be able to use RT very much on the Super because it will become a weak card in a much shorter amount of time than the GRE. Whereas the GRE (and AMD equivalent to Nvidia's cards) will still have punching power due to higher VRAM and more GPU capabilities.
azk102002@reddit
I’ll concede that RT isn’t really much of a selling point but saying that DLSS is no better or worse than FSR is willful ignorance. DLSS in almost every game has significantly less artifacting and a greater positive performance impact than FSR.
BedroomRemarkable897@reddit
Is it better but is it not that much better.
It is more like 80%-100%.
For me I would rather play in native resolution without upscaling and fg.
azk102002@reddit
Obviously anyone would rather play native, but for those who can’t without infringing upon their performance preferences, you need upscaling. And if DLSS is even 1% better than FSR, why would you choose FSR?
BedroomRemarkable897@reddit
If you speak only about tech, then yes.
But when you put price in all of that, AMD in low/mid end just have sense.
azk102002@reddit
Fair enough
murgador@reddit
Nope. Depends on implementation. Ti Super owner here.
azk102002@reddit
I did indeed read the comment. For most games, the way DLSS is implemented is better than FSR.
farmeunit@reddit
Better sure, but if you want performance, it hardly matters, especially at 4k. Not to mention, XeSS is also a thing. They all have technical issues and limitations depending on the game. DLSS is definitely better at lower resolutions, but at lower resolutions, run native…
StewTheDuder@reddit
This
Fat_screaming_yoshi@reddit
Yeah, I’ve never owned an Nvidia graphics card and I’ll still concede that their upscaling and frame gen technologies are just better, the AI algorithms they run are leagues beyond what FSR will probably ever be capable of given that it has to be available across a much larger scope of games.
Single_Awareness7995@reddit
I wouldn't be certain of that. The new gpus are supposed to have ai and from what I've seen, if this next generation of gpus that drops in JANUARY (in case you were wondering when you'll see price drops) have software fully controlled by on board a.i. it'll be completely different than nividias "chug more juice" approach.
deliriumtriggered@reddit
If you're willing to wait 2-3 months, nvidia's new series of cards will be out and amd processors will be cheaper.
G_Rav@reddit
4070 super and the 7900 gre have almost similar performance in non-RT mode. RT mode 4070 super is superior. 4070 super consumes lesser power than 7900 gre. 220w vs 260w(something alot of people ignore).
CrystalBlueClaw@reddit
From my experience running many amd and nvidia cards over the years:
If you can, always overpay for nvidia
Reggitor360@reddit
7900 GRE.
And domt buy the dogshit CX PSU.
Get the RMx/RMe or the MSI MAG 850GL
Bulky_Sun_6299@reddit
Nothing to think about too much. For 1440p the 4070S would be perfect, RT & DLSS Frame Generation are a must for current and future AAA games. AMD FSR is ugly and inefficient.
Zxz_juggernaut@reddit
RT on 4070 Super?
How many fps does that give you?
Bulky_Sun_6299@reddit
How much fps do you need in AAA games? Go to youtube and search bro, with DLSS + FG, fps is not a big issue at 1440p.
Diligent_Mention1773@reddit
interesting take
Crptnx@reddit
You dont have to worry about temps, product was deisgned to work with two fans and smaller cooler. Resulting in higher temperature and more noise.
All nvidia features like dlss have its AMD equivalents.
12gb VRAM nowadays is not enough.
AMD can also do raytracing but its not worth the performance impact even on high end gpus not even of these mid end. In 1440p with these cards you will be happy if you can run game at max settings without upscaling.
What you should care about most is AFMF2 feature in AMD drivers which can enable frame generation in any game.
Just take the fastest card - 7900GRE
Orschloch@reddit
I'm just upvoting your post because you detailed your requirements and thoughts.
redvariation@reddit
If you ever want to do AI (Stable Diffusion, etc.) onboard, buy the NVIDIA card.
Tiavor@reddit
but SD is available for AMD too.
redvariation@reddit
When I went from an RX6600 to a 4070Super, it was about 30x faster.
Tiavor@reddit
because the 6600 is closer to a 3060 (even a bit below) than a 4070S
raZr_517@reddit
I'd choose between the two, depending on what I know I'm gonna play and if I can afford to spend the extra $$$.
4070S - DLSS and Frame gen 7900GRE - 4GB more VRAM and cheaper
Ohrobohobo@reddit
Got a source on the 6800xt failing at 1440?
raZr_517@reddit
Since when does "showing it's limitations" mean "failing"?
It just means that in some games you'd need to dial some settings down so you can play at 1440p at >60fps, trend that will accentuate as the time passes, hence the 7900gre and the 4070S are better options.
Livid-Cheek7846@reddit
If you don't care about productivity get the GRE
Patatostrike@reddit
I would either get the $830 4070 super or a 6800XT.
Single_Awareness7995@reddit
All I can say is, yes you want 3 fans over 2.
farmeunit@reddit
The only cards that are worth running RT on most of the time are the 4070Ti and above. Anything below that isn’t going to be a great experience. Most games don’t even use it extensively. We have about 100 games right now and 10 of those use it well.
