It's been a while since my uni days but research showed that most pedophiles (or at least the ones the research polled) do not want to be pedophiles and would never even want to harm a child.

In that seminar we also learned about how most child sexual assault isn't done by pedophiles but by opportunity offenders. For that you have to take a look at two other very vulnerable demographics that are sexually assaulted more than you'd think: the disabled and the elderly.

The elderly and the disabled usually don't get sexually assaulted because of a fetish or a predisposition for those two groups but rather because they are vulnerable. They are often unable to get help or depend on their abusers too much.

The same goes for sexual offenders who assault children. The availability of children is what leads to child sexual assault. And this is also why most child sexual assault happens by the people in their lives not by some random pedo.

This means that you need to create awareness in your child from a very young age! What is a good touch and bad touch. Who is allowed to touch me. What are things they should immediately tell their parents. What is sex and masturbation in child appropriate terms (children masturbate from a very very young age. Especially girls)

Ensuring clear body autonomy language is really important, I think. Making sure the child knows the proper terms for genitals instead of "cookie" or "hoo hoo". Fostering healthy communication between parent and child can seem complicated, but once it starts, it gets somewhat easier. Always make sure your kid feels heard.

My ex has a cousin that was recently charged with a list of these kinds of offenses. What you've said, seems to apply to his pattern of abuse. Understanding what causes this sort of abuse is difficult to process given the age of the victims, but hopefully one day we can find a way to nip these things before more victims are made.

Looked it up properly, pedophilia is in the DSM-5 as a disorder, some people actually just have extremely, extremely misdirected sexual urges because their brain doesn't work correctly. It can also arise from childhood sexual abuse.

So like, you can technically be a pedophile without being a rapist, but very few people admit this to anyone before someone catches them engaging in activities related to it.
