A real-life Pokedex! I think it's been talked about before but never seen anything

Has anyone heard of an app that is similar to a Pokedex for Australian animals or just animals in general? I've seen a few that you can just add observations to a list but it would be cool to have it more pokedex style. I'm not sure how this would even look/function but i'd love to be able to scan/take photos of animals while hiking and add them to my list. Or even if it's popular animals from certain locations like if I went to the mountains in a certain place and theres a list of popular animals you have to try and find etc. Hope that makes sense!
Edit: I'm aware of iNaturalist. I was more hoping for a fun version with extras like - points or badges/challenges for finding rare animals etc.

Congratulations, you just invented the hobby of birding.

I should have added a "/s" was being silly.

Merlin is the one for birds.
It identifies them by sound or photo and has all the info, how rare they are, what birds are in your area, etc.
It also has a life list of the ones you have seen or heard personally.

I can imagine it: Next Pokemon direct, a representative of some international ecological organization announces that a new app using image recognition APIs, in-depth descriptions, and all that jazz, is put into a fun Pokemon aesthetic.

Install has a "lite" version called Seek. It has all of those things you mentioned: challenges, animals in your area, etc:

Is that the same as iNaturalist? Seems to be more research focussed rather than fun/gamey. Only from what I've heard!

It's the same technology, but packaged to be more casual-user friendly. I recommend it.

And if Seek can’t get a good ID you can upload to iNaturalist directly from it to crowdsource a better ID!

I like the Audubon App for birding.

As long as you have to physically catch them every time, can’t let it be too easy.
Also, only giant butterfly nets allowed. It’s jellyfishing rules.

this would be a relatively straightforward app to build now with some of the commercially available image-rec APIs--though those same API calls would probably require that it not be a free app.
I could see this catching on pretty decently if it's built well
