Another post got me thinking. What is a classic movie that every GenX kid should have seen but you didn’t and don’t want to. When I tell people I’ve never seen The Princess Bride nor have any desire to they act as if I slapped them lol!

Certain styles of comedy don't age well. I would say a lot of Seinfeld would qualify - for me anyhow

True, it was funny back then but really cringey if you try to rewatch it. Frasier aged well though.

The Neverending Story
cappyvee@reddit
Footloose. I love Kevin Bacon, but as a teen so much of my life revolved around school dances I thought the premise was stupid. I also hated the theme song.
Roland__Of__Gilead@reddit
I have never seen The Never Ending Story. It's odd, because it's fantasy and that's 100% in my wheelhouse, but one thing I've noticed about my "likes" is that I've never really liked entertainment media for kids. Never liked teen pop stars, or young adult books or shows. I liked things that were targeted at grown ups, or at least featured grown ups. Star Wars is for kids, but it features adults. Comic books in the 70s and 80s were for kids, but the Avengers and X-Men were adults, or at least older teens.
Interestingly, I had never seen the Goonies until about 5 years ago, and now I realize that my disinterest as a kid was probably for the same reason.
luvdogs71@reddit
I have also never seen the Princess Bride.
EntrepreneurMain7833@reddit
I've never watched "the princess bride" all the way through. I just don't care.
jimonlimon@reddit
At least you gave it a chance.
singlesunbeam_enough@reddit
I cannot make it through Grease… I remember thinking why is that 50 year old lady hanging out with the other 20 year old looking teens. And the girls swooning over the guys 🤮 “like gag me with a spoon” and then the singing!!! The never ending singing … and that’s only 10-20 minutes into the movie before I say “nope”
jimonlimon@reddit

As an older GenXer,, I never came across Goonies. It’s on my Letterboxd list but I don’t know if it’s something that’s good for a new watch today or only as a nostalgia watch (e.g. elsewhere I commented that The Princess Bride totally would hold up, even as a first watch).
hmmmpf@reddit
Yep. I was too old for this one. Star Wars (1977) was when I was 11.
_baegopah_XD@reddit
Omg. It’s a classic! There’s even a Goonies themed cafe in Seoul!
Ethernetman1980@reddit
What!!! I guess it depends a bit on when you were born 1980, but this was my favorite. Some of the other greats I didn’t appreciate until Ineas older.
keyser_durden@reddit
That’s the exact reaction I got when I told a coworker this morning that I’d never seen it. She was in disbelief because it’s really the type of movie that I would have seen. I don’t know how it slipped by me.
-forbiddenkitty-@reddit
I showed this to my nephews when they were about 7-8ish (15 or so years ago). Afterward, the eldest told me, "Thanks, Aunt Kitty. That was a good movie."
I laughed at how serious he was about it. But he did like it. It's fun to watch with kids.

CountryMonkeyAZ@reddit
St. Elmo's Fire (I liked it, but had an early crush on Mr. Lowe) and Less Then Zero are GenGap movies in my eyes.
By this, I mean they are for the last of the Boomers and 1st of the GenX. This is totally anecdotal. Brother is Boomer (1958), and step-brother (1964) both LOVE THEM.
LeoMarius@reddit
We live near the frat houses where they filmed the beginning of St. Elmo’s. They are not in Georgetown.
Fire_Trashley@reddit
Yeah, one week we’re watching the brat pack fuck around in high school; then the next they’re all grownup with boring adult problems.
LeoMarius@reddit
Both are good movies, but not must see.
Competitive-Fact-820@reddit

OCDaboutretirement@reddit

Fire_Trashley@reddit
I was too young to understand or appreciate st. Elmo’s Fire. What made it worse is all those actors played dopey high school kids just a year prior and now they were grownups with grownup problems.

Not gonna lie I was a bit bummed trying to watch it at almost 49. Not because I didn't like it (which I didn't), but because I know something inside me has been extinguished. I fucking loved it when I was a child.
youdontknowme7777@reddit
So, I’m curious if it’s worth rewatching as an adult. Not because I loved it as a kid, but because it terrified me and maybe watching it will make me see how silly and ridiculous it was?
violetauto@reddit
You will be healed in less than 20 minutes, so yeah. Don’t pay for it though, just go on youtube and find a clip. Any clip.
uninspired@reddit
I say give it a shot. My wife is a bit younger than I am and she didn't grow up with it, so I tried to make her watch it a couple months ago and she was bored so I didn't push it. We maybe made it 20min into it. But the last time I watched it was almost 40 years ago so I'm not sure how much of it was her and how much of it was me getting older. I'll probably give it another try when my kid gets a couple years older. She's still capable of feeling magic whereas some of the magic has faded with older folks.
Lemmy_Axe_U_Sumphin@reddit

Monty python movies. I went to one in early teens and walked out halfway through. That was enough. mrtoad47@reddit
There are so many movies in this list that are nostalgia watches. Most I’ve seen. Some I’ve not. Many that’d hold up with a first watch today, some only with a rewatch, and some not at all.
But fuck, OP, The Princess Bride is timeless. Book or movie. And regardless of whatever genre you’re into (actually a running gag in the movie is that the kid might not be into it).
Look, it’s not like it’s the best movie ever. But its appeal is for everyone. Like, I understand that not everyone is into Python, as I am. Likewise, I couldn’t GAF about Star Trek or LOTR.
But do yourself a favor and watch the Princess Bride. It’s inconceivable to me that you won’t be glad you did.

I hate this movie. Hate it.
WrongWayCorrigan-361@reddit
I have never seen Karate Kid. And I watch a ton of movies. Always have. It has never looked interesting to me.
twstdbydsn@reddit
Is it weird that I think I’ve seen every one of these movies you all say you haven’t?
AJourneyer@reddit
I was just going through the thread thinking the same thing.

Porky's
Fire_Trashley@reddit
Porky’s is soooo dumb on a rewatch. It’s got good t&a if you’re into that sort of thing, but very low on laughs.
Fire_Trashley@reddit
Never saw Reality Bites and haven’t the slightest interest.
MorningBrewNumberTwo@reddit
Top Gun
Eastern-Ad-5253@reddit
For me it was the movie Say Anything. First off I Can't stand John Cusack. I watched like 5 minutes of Say Anything and was like " Nope" it's not my cup of tea.
MNSoaring@reddit
Amityville horror
Alien
Halloween
Carrie
…. As I write, basically I never watched any “classic” horror movies
VultureTheBird@reddit
Ghostbusters.
Before the remake, I often won the game Two Truths and a Lie with this. They all thought it was a lie because it was unfathomable to have not seen it.

The Princess Bride somehow transcends generations. It’s worth a watch, even if you are skeptical.
Little-Pen-500@reddit
I never saw the Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Streets or Friday the 13th. Not a one
JJQuantum@reddit
Well, yeah. You really should watch Princess Bride, lol. For me it’s Dumb and Dumber. Looks like too stupid of a movie to me and I’ve seen and enjoyed Wayne’s World and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
AccomplishedWar9776@reddit
The Sound of Music… comes on tv every year , tried to watch it several times in my youth but fell asleep. Now, just don’t care to.
TheRateBeerian@reddit
I never saw it until about 2 years ago. I didn’t have anything better to do I guess so I decided to see what all the hype was about. I certainly found it meh. I don’t like singing movies.
rayraybaratheon@reddit
Me neither and I’ve seen every other movie posted so far. I wouldn’t mind seeing it I guess but not crazy about musicals so def won’t seek it out.
80sfanatic@reddit
I feel like I’m one of the few people that doesn’t go crazy for this movie. I nope out of watching it every year! lol

Never ending Story. Goonies. My husband got me to watch Time Bandits saying I’d love it since I like Monty Python. It was meh. Willow.

Hocus Pocus and Beetlejuice.
(I watched both of them this year and they were…fine.)

I’ve seen The Princess Bride and when I tell people I didn’t like it, I get the same reaction.
I never saw St Elmo’s Fire. Does that count as a classic every GenX should see? I have no interest myself.
80sfanatic@reddit
St Elmo’s Fire is terrible; you’re missing nothing.
Judgy-Introvert@reddit
Good to know.

Didn't age well at all. The stalking that the Estevez character does to the doctor, is basically insane...
polishprince76@reddit
It wasn't until very recently that I saw The Thing. Just never came across my path.
pinballrocker@reddit
If you are talking about the John Carpenter version, I think it holds up pretty well. Great movie!
AlbMonk@reddit
I have never seen Caddyshack, nor have any desire to.
pinballrocker@reddit
I've never seen The Never Ending Story, I was 16 when it came out and it seemed like a kid's movie when I was sure I was almost an adult.
lazytiger40@reddit
Same as OP never saw nor really wanted to see Princess Bride. Didn't help that I grew up with friends who spoke quotes and scenes from the movie and basically beat it to death ..
SilanceDoGood@reddit
Ouch! Did I just feel a slap?
I love The Princess Bride (still do) and I’ve never seen The Never Ending Story (at my age I’m not interested in watching) …I guess I’m just the sort of person that you had in mind.

Get ready to freak out then because I've never seen Neverending Story and Princess Bride is one of my all time favorite movies. 😂
fadeanddecayed@reddit
Kids movies: Legend, Willow, Fraggle Rock (HBO I know), probably tons more. I hate Princess Bride.
Grownup movies: Risky Business, Top Gun, Weird Science, a bunch of others.
I have seen The Breakfast Club 20 times, though, so I've got that going for me.
