I have never seen titanic

I can see alot of my life in the realm of seinfeld.
I have never seen titanic. I don't get all the hype for the movie. I hate it as much as Elaine hated the English patient.
Ngl, titanic came out around when my first and only real relationship ended and my ex saw it and told me. Maybe that's why I never got the hype.
ConflictNo5518@reddit
I’ve never watched the movie either.
DorvidGoldy1@reddit
How can you hate it if you haven’t seen it? The actual parts with the ship sinking that’s based on real history is good. But you can read non-fiction or find good documentaries and that’s more important than the movie.
LadyAtheist@reddit
I haven't seen the movie because I know how it ends.
My TV references are all too old now. 😞 Id I say "No soup for you" it now means "I have dementia."
Hartford0061@reddit
While we are all confessing. I never watched Friends. I've never seen an entire episode.
RoninRobot@reddit
Oh good. We’re confessing. I’ve never seen a single minute of Saved by the Bell. I only know Screech and Zach(?) because neither xers nor millennials would shut up about it for two decades. Btw that’s not a confession, that’s a brag.
Bhoddisatva@reddit
I had people in my family who watched it, so I couldn't avoid it. I was flabbergasted that people thought Saved by the Bell and Full House were 'good'.
chewbooks@reddit
lol, that show was my first PA job. I’ve blocked it all out.
Bouche_Audi_Shyla@reddit
Nor have I.
Bear_Salary6976@reddit
I watched a few episodes, but never really got into it. I guess I was used to living in shitty houses with too many roommates while we would get drunk on Beast, Natty Light, or Steel Reserve. Maybe we would pass around a bowl of we were feeling rich. Even if we went to a coffee shop, it was a rundown shit hole. I couldn't relate to the poshy lifestyle those guys were living.
Ecstatic_Worker_1629@reddit
I have only watched a part of Godfather 1 and Godfather 2. I couldn't get through how boring it was. I do LOVE Goodfellas and Casino though..... I can watch those two multiple times. I have never watched Friends either.
HorrorhoundHippy73@reddit
Goodfellows was excellent and I had the same problem with The Godfather films
Thinkfolksthink@reddit
The Irishman was great if you have 3 hours.
potsofjam@reddit
If you factor in the level of talent involved, the Irishman is the worst movie ever made.

I've attempted to watch The Godfather a number of times, but never succeeded in staying awake past 15 minutes.

Did The godfather Iinsist upon itself?

Godfather 1 > Goodfellas > Godfather 2
Romaine2k@reddit
I loved Casino, and I am bored stiff by the Godfather 1, so I never bothered with 2 or 3.

Never saw the movies, though I read the book.
Chay_Charles@reddit
I've never watched Friends, Titanic, or ET.
StG4Ever@reddit

carpetstoremorty@reddit
ET is great. It's the only one of the three worth revisiting or visiting for the first time.
Improvident__lackwit@reddit
I cried like a baby when I saw that as a little kid. Was embarrassed then, am embarrassed now. Will not watch again.
djtx1234@reddit
ET and Poltergeist were released the same day. Me, my friend Cody, and two girls I can't remember now went to see ET and then snuck in to watch Poltergeist after. I was less than a month from turning 13.
carpetstoremorty@reddit
Poltergeist is basically an edgier ET. The rumor is that Spielberg somewhat took over direction for Poltergeist.
I've definitely always seen them as two halves of the same coin.
djtx1234@reddit
I'd forgotten but I think I've heard the credited director (Toby Hooper, right?) was too drunk to do a lot of the work required.
Perplexio76@reddit
I actually preferred the 2nd Poltergeist over the first. Julian Beck as Cane was absolutely terrifying. He only had about 10 minutes of screen time but he made every second count!
FurBabyAuntie@reddit
Yeah, I'd agree they're two sides of...something...

Got it lol. I am a 74 baby, so I was under 7 I think, so I get it
PacRat48@reddit
E.T. was from the times one saw a movie in the theater 2-3 times. There was no thought of a movie available at home at a later date. Also, birthday parties at the theater was a common thing.
E.T. was one of those movies I saw 3x in the theaters. Once with mom&dad, and twice at theater birthday parties
FurBabyAuntie@reddit
I was twenty, my sister was seven (or about to be seven) and we saw ET with our parents. It's the only movie my sister ever saw at a drive-in and the last one Mom, Dad and I saw at one.
pinkcheese12@reddit
E.T. was so good, I decided immediately that I never wanted to watch it again to like keep the memory perfect forever.

Simple-Purpose-899@reddit
OK, a Mandela Effect of mine for Friends is that they originally didn't have a laugh track. Am I insane here?
Vprbite@reddit
It did and it didn't. It had a live studio audience that also had a laugh track added. Sort of like a singer having a backing track.
Simple-Purpose-899@reddit
That kind of makes sense. I just can't watch syndication because it seems like they have added an over the top laugh track that I just can't handle. I have never enjoyed shows with laugh tracks, so I'm not sure how I ever watched it in the first place if it was the way it is now in syndication.
Vprbite@reddit
That's exactly what the laugh track does. Sort of "punch it up" a bit for in case the audience didn't laugh hard enough

At the time, Friends was for people who weren’t smart enough for Seinfeld
Very hard to escape the show and I saw many many clips, or it was on while I was cooking, but nope, no reason to watch it in the 90s
Stevemcqueef6969@reddit
Friends is objectively not funny. It is the very lowest of humor. Take away the laugh track, and it’s as funny as Dear Zachary
OneStarInSight_AC@reddit
It's literally choreographed around the laugh track. Meaning, the actors pause their lines for it. How can you be GenX and not know this?
NoTomorrowNo@reddit
How can you be gen X and not know it was filmed in from of an audience? So like at the theatre, the actors pause when the audience laughs, aaaaaahhs or gasps, so they can hear the rest of the scene.
EaterOfFood@reddit
I watched one episode. I didn’t even crack a smile. I agree, it is entirely not funny, just dumb, low-brow sex jokes.

Difficult_Advice_720@reddit
Not necessarily. Reference the grandson of President Tyler.
Effelljay@reddit
I don’t know a the maths, but it was born in the previous millennium decades and decades ago. You tell me the math but people seemed to be
spy_tater@reddit
Yeah man. My grandparents were all born between 1908 and 1916. But I'm not as old as many Xers. Titanic sank in 1912 apparently. But the joke was good and caught me off guard and your grandpa wouldn't have to be old enough for the set up just the punch line.
Difficult_Advice_720@reddit
You do realize that the grandson of President Tyler is still alive, right? https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2020/11/29/president-john-tyler-grandson-harrison/
spy_tater@reddit
And how old was Tyler when his son was born?
spy_tater@reddit
He was 63 and his son fathered said grandson when he was 70. Hardly relevant.
Difficult_Advice_720@reddit
Thus showing that an alive guy now very realistically can have a grandfather who was around for the Titanic.
Difficult_Advice_720@reddit
Doesn't even matter. It was asserted that the timeline can't work for a guy to say his grandfather was around for Titanic when we have a test case clearly showing that an alive guy now could have a grandfather as far back at the 10th President of the United States.
CawlinAlcarz@reddit
Titanic actually sank in 1912. Titanic movie came out 1997. I was born 1970, my grandfather was born in 1910... timing works - BARELY - grandfather was 2 when it sank, and 87 when the ovie came out... but it works.
DangerousBotany@reddit
I saw Titanic with a group of friends from school. I was joking around and said, "I have a sinking feeling the boat isn't going to make it." This girl in front of us turned around and yelled at me about giving away the movie. We had no words.... True story!
Martiantripod@reddit
I still remember standing in line for the DiCaprio Romeo & Juliet and we were discussing some thoughts on how they might do certain scenes such as the poison at the end. Two teenage girls complained that we should be more careful about spoilers in public...

Famous-Composer3112@reddit
They should have had an intermission for that movie. You're sitting there with your popcorn and large Coke, and just when you're ready to pee, sea water starts sloshing all over the decks.
FurBabyAuntie@reddit
As far as length of a film goes, I'd feel sorry for the people who saw Scarface (Al Pacino) in theaters.
I watched it at a friend's house (she had cable). They had an intermission in the middle of the movie.
Perplexio76@reddit
Scarface is a remake. The original is a much more manageable hour and a half. I believe it was either directed or produced by Howard Hughes.
FurBabyAuntie@reddit
And it starred George Raft, didn't it?
Perplexio76@reddit
George Raft was in it, but Paul Muni played the lead.
Perplexio76@reddit
I saw Titanic in the theaters 4 or 5x and I believe at least 2 of those showings DID have intermissions.
Elly_Fant628@reddit
I think there should be intermission in a lot of movies. There used to be a website where they uploaded the best per break times in every movie.
Famous-Composer3112@reddit
I've seen movies with long, boring scenes, and wondered if they were meant as "pee breaks."
Elly_Fant628@reddit
Yes but every time, I keep expecting something interesting is about to happen, so I don't go for a break, and then it's too late.
(That sounds like I've peed myself!)
The worst one was the extended version of Dances With Wolves. At least I think it was an extended version - maybe it just seemed that way. I seem to remember it being about 3 hours, and there was no warning about the length. Definitely intermission required.

I saw it when it first came out. I both do and don't recommend it. It's much less about the ship and much more about two people having an affair on the ship. Sure there are some historical elements to it but they are very few and far between. There's a lot more Hollywood to it than any real history.

Not for nothing, but that is the epitome of 'ignorance defined hate.' I've never done a thing, but I hate the thing.
I can admit to letting fan clubs (Beliebers) ruin some things before I get a chance to experience them. I still shy away from JB because of that, but the song he does, Lonely is amazing! I can't hate him or his songs or fame because I don't know those things, haven't experienced them... & I'm glad I didn't let my hesitancy stop me from experiencing Lonely.
If you're avoiding something because of an ex, then you're letting that person control you.... & they likely don't care enough to want that power, so why care enough to give them that power? Watch it, don't watch, I don't give a sh*... but come to grips with yourself & move on. You'll be a happier person for it.

From time to time, I am reminded of some of the "gaps" in my pop culture knowledge or exposure. A few years ago, a friend of mine was dating someone younger and wanted to catch her up on gen x movies and things she might have missed, and I had to keep quiet about the fact that I had missed a bunch of it for one reason or another, mainly my religiously fanatical over-controlled and protected upbringing. Anyway, there's always something that pops up where I can honestly say I have no knowledge or have never seen. Titanic, Breaking Bad, The Simpsons, too much popular music to even list. This past weekend, my partner was aghast that I had not seen the most recent A Star is Born with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, and insisted we watch it between the Lions game and the Grey Cup. (TLDR, it was fine. I didn't dislike it. One viewing is probably enough, though. And I think she's identifying with the wrong character based on her life, but that's another story.) Not sure why my taste runs so counter to mainstream in so many things. I used to think it was teenage/young person angst and ennui. Now it's just liking what I like, but I couldn't really explain it.
tultommy@reddit
I mean... I feel the same way about Seinfeld. It's a show about people who are so insufferable they could only be friends with each other because no one else would want anything to do with them. And Jerry's whole schtick of saying... what's the deal with... stopped being funny about 30 seconds after it started... the very first time. I saw Titanic once. It was fine. It wasn't the masterpiece people going to see it in theaters 20 times claimed it was lol.

OutrageousMoney4339@reddit
I was 17 when it came out and we had just done a mock trial of the Titanic's captain in my history class, so it was a class field trip. We were a bunch of teenagers in a theater full of elderly people who were either that generation or children of that generation. I felt like I was the only teenager who really understood the gravity and heartbreak of the situation, and who wasn't obsessed with Leonardo DiCaprio/Kate Winslet. I had nightmares for days afterwards. I had a relative who was supposed to be on that voyage, but he missed the boat...

I watched Titanic years later. I remember when it was found in the Atlantic in 1985. I could have cared less about the Jack and Rose story, I mainly watched it for the historical aspect. I wanted to see how James Cameron created how the ship sank from his vision. From what I read in books and what survivors said he hit it pretty well in the movie including after the sinking too

comfortablynumb15@reddit
You can see most of the movie in the trailers, and glamourising the cheating on Calvert by Rose as magical and beautiful didn’t do it for me.
And the miserable old cow knew she had the jewel in her pocket all along, ( you know, the reason a boat load of people spent millions going to the wreck in the first place ) but only brought it out long enough for everyone to know she had it before throwing it overboard and dying !!
I watched it for the ship sinking, and propeller guy.
SwimOk9629@reddit
did you even see it? the only part of this that is correct is about her throwing it overboard. and not telling anyone.
creeva@reddit
Sigh - I don’t want to defend Titanic. But the cheating is because Rose is in a marriage arranged by her mother attempting to sell her off so they would have money. Rose never cared for fiancé, the point was she could find love. If you think she should have stayed in a loveless relationship for status and money - cool. It just wasn’t as cut and dry as she cheated on her fiancé.
Now - please don’t make ever defend the love story aspect of the movie ever again.
comfortablynumb15@reddit
lol, love your reply, wouldn’t dream of it !
It’s just the world was full of loveless marriages for that reason back then, not like you have the choices we have today. Still doesn’t make it acceptable IMHO.

I haven’t either. I was probably too old for it when it came out. Plus, I never liked that kid Boxey from Galactica. Just looked him up and he is only 4 years younger than me. Seemed way younger as a kid.

Where's Star Wars and Raiders? Do you hate Harrison Ford? 😄
General_Promotion347@reddit
Never seen those.
Tennis_Proper@reddit
Revoked.
jnpitcher@reddit
Agreed. Raiders and Star Wars were solid GenX movies. Star Wars was in everyone’s orbit, like it or not. Temple of Doom was responsible for the PG-13 rating. Harrison Ford in all of them.

Uh wtf????
Goonies was for little kids- dancers never ending story
I was way too old to watch an elementary school movie in high school

Never actually seen Neverending Story or The Goonies. not intentional, just happened.
OlasNah@reddit
Yeah I remember seeing that large flying dog thing in commercials for it and it was tremendously off putting
Strange-Win-3551@reddit
I’ve never seen them either. As an older Gen x they looked waaaay too young for me
dingatremel@reddit
I’m more or less in the middle of the generation, if not on the younger side. Goonies should have been right up my alley, but NES definitely seemed a little too young for me at the time.
GeminiGenXGirl@reddit
I have a Gen X friend who had never seen Goonies so one day (a few years ago)I said let’s watch it. I was laughing and reciting lines and singing the songs and he was like “WTF THIS MOVIE SUCKS”.
💔 😢
OlasNah@reddit
I’m like that with ET. Wife loves it but to me it’s a terrible and oddly very short film with lots of bad pacing and inconsistent scenes.
I’m convinced it was Spielberg’s fascination with suburban life in the late 70s and early 80s that made him just want to fit some sort of adventure into that
COVID19Blues@reddit
He’s an ex-friend now, right?
OlasNah@reddit
I’d never seen Goonies until a few years ago and still haven’t watched Neverending story beyond a few parts I’d seen during tv replays.
Of course I’ve seen all those other films so many times I’d even made an audio commentary cassette tape of Ghostbusters FROM MEMORY.

Brief_Ad7468@reddit
Still haven’t seen Goonies and (unpopular opinion) found Neverending Story annoying as hell, but I was in high school by then and it was just too hokey and maudlin. Labyrinth also didn’t do much for me despite David Bowie’s pants. The age difference between him and Jennifer Connelly squicked me out even back then in the dark days.

I skipped it for years - I honestly thought DiCaprio was so annoying as a child actor I’d avoided him as he progressed.
Anyhow, set aside your associations. It’s very good.
Martiantripod@reddit
You say that. We are opposites. I don't get the hype for Seinfeld. To me it's unfunny and cringe. Titanic on the other hand I discovered in the 80s with a book called A Night to Remember and by the time the Cameron movie came out I couldn't wait to see the ship in all her glory. I'm not huge on the whole romance angle of it but I do enjoy watching Titanic now and again.
Beautiful-Height3103@reddit
Never saw it either
mtempissmith@reddit
I hadn't seen it ever when the box set came out. I even had a Rose doll from the Franklin Mint that I liked the clothes for. I'm into Edwardian fashion. Always had been but I'd still never watched the film.
Ever since I was a little kid I've had bad, bad dreams of being in a shipwreck and of being tossed into freezing cold water. Sharks rising up from under the people and picking them off. People going under screaming...
Plus when I was a bit older my Dad took me to see JAWS, which knowing my nightmares wasn't too cool. Your kid is having nightmares about being eaten by sharks in freezing cold water and you take her to see JAWS?
I never swam in the ocean again. To this day no farther in than my shins. I love the ocean and I respect sharks. I don't hate them but it's their ocean and I have a feeling that in a past life I was in a big boat that sank and that I ended up shark food!
So needless to say a movie about Titanic wasn't something I was too keen to see however much hype there was about it.
My late BFF she liked the film and at one point she dragged me to see one of the traveling Titanic exhibits. It was interesting but it was a bit surreal. I felt very weird walking around looking at all of it.
After that we went back to my house and for the first time ever I watched Titanic and you know what? The hype was right. It was a damn good film even if I did get a bit weirded out at the end when everyone was off the ship and people were in a cold ocean dying.
No sharks, thank goodness!
It's worth the watch. It really is. Just the set recreations and the clothes make it worth watching. They did a great job with all that and the actors did too.
raymondspogo@reddit
I'd rather watch something and not like it.
DefrockedWizard1@reddit

Tacos_N_Bourbon@reddit
My wife loves Titanic, she plays it a lot for background noise while cooking or cleaning. She’s also a huge fan of Friends, which is in syndication locally and comes on every night. I missed it and Seinfeld completely due to working a second shift factory job. Tried watching Everybody Loves Raymond, but quickly realized it was a show about my in-laws. After mentioning it to my wife, even she agreed it’s about her mom and brother.

Also never saw Titanic. Worked in a mall at the time, and I'd pull into the parking lot surrounded by cars blasting that. fucking. song. Now, a documentary on the Titanic, I'm all in.
Also never watched Friends and think it's a terrible show. Whenever I think to myself "how can people possibly..." I just remind myself that Friends was popular.

AuntiePoison@reddit
Back in my day there were things called clips where the "funny" parts of a show were teased to get suckers to tune in week after week. Seeing a minute long clip of a 22 minute show is enough to tell me the jokes aren't funny. You don't need to sit through a whole episode to learn that.
Hell, the "network television 7pm time slot" is enough to tell me the jokes aren't funny.
ccdolfin@reddit
I get choosing not to watch either, however, if you haven’t seen an episode or two, then judging people based on something you’ve no firsthand knowledge of is ridiculous.
That being said, to each their own. I’ve never seen an episode of Game Of Thrones. I find the commercials ridiculous and the premise too out there. I would willingly, however, sit down to watch the Lord of the Rings films, extended trilogy anytime. Also I thought How I Met Your Mother was stupid, but did give it a season to decide as sitcoms need a season to warm up to. I know many who think it’s the greatest show ever but found it repetitive and dry in its jokes.
Think_Leadership_91@reddit
I live how you say “how I met your mother@ so casually.
I googled it and it’s a tv show
I was in graduate school followed by Netflix. I watched old movies, Lost, Sopranos, Mad Men sbd reading books
I don’t begin to know anything about his inner or mother, but more interesting… no one I ever worked with told me about the show
Unlike decade if NCIS or SVU
AuntiePoison@reddit
I've seen enough clips of the show to know that it cannot be redeemed in my opinion. It was everywhere at the time. Commercials, talk shows, the living room TV while I was doing homework in the kitchen. I said what I said.
FurBabyAuntie@reddit
Somebody asked me once if I'd watched Game Of Thrones. When I said no, they made a crack about how I must be too sensitive for it or maybe I didn't think historical fiction/fantasy was worth looking at. I said no, I have quite a few favorites on the fantasy shelves and I've enjoyed the historical fiction I've read. However, it was rather difficult to watch Game Of Thrones at that time because I didn't subscribe to HBO.
I'm not particularly interested in reading Game Of Thrones at the moment, but you never know...
Perplexio76@reddit
I've seen Titanic (1953) and A Night to Remember (1958), and of course Titanic (1997)... Of the 3, I felt "A Night to Remember" was the best. But the 1997 version, while overrated IS well worth watching for the special effects. Cameron gave a masterclass in filmmaking with that movie!
NoTomorrowNo@reddit
Not liking something you ve actually watched is ,like, an acceptable outcome. To each their own.
Its all the ones who hate with a passion without having watched a whole episode or the whole movie they are talking about that seem, er, like they are walking talking red flags.
I mean it s OK to no like a genre and avoid all related films/series, but to hate one movie/series you ve not seen seems oddly intense to me.
Are you with me?
(BTW, same, what I enjoyed the most was how the plot gets us to visit the ship Cameron has recreated identically, actors are good and all, but still kinda meh about it, not sure why)
Perplexio76@reddit
Because the plot is trite and cliché. I love the movie in spite of the plot, not because of it. I'd argue the story is the weakest part of the movie.
NoTomorrowNo@reddit
Agreed, I meant, I loved that it got us to visit the ship in the way it did, in every corner. That s all I liked about it. That and maybe a couple of secondary roles.
Perplexio76@reddit
When I used to go to talk to my wife and she was in the master bath. I'd pose like Rose and as soon as she would come out of the bathroom I'd ask her to draw me like one of her French girls.
NoTomorrowNo@reddit
Lol, good one
Erik500red@reddit
How does that work exactly?
AuntiePoison@reddit
See now, how TV worked in the day, the whole family gathered in the living room to sit in front of the glowing box. The networks showed ads for their shows with clips in them to try to get you to watch so they could sell you products during the commercials. Actors in said shows would go on talk shows where they'd be charming and show clips trying to get you to watch so the network could sell you some more products. Now, the TV produced sound loudly because back in those days people didn't use the closed captioning to hear things, and sound travels from one room to the other. So while one person, like a little sister easily impressed by shiny objects, is in a room watching a terrible TV show, people in adjacent rooms could hear it. Since those days, people have stopped watching TV commercials, turned on closed captioning, and stopped collectively gathering as a family, but my opinion of that show has not budged, and no amount of complete episode watching will change my mind. It's just not funny.
FurBabyAuntie@reddit
I don't know why I remember this, but Titanic lost just about every Oscar it was nominated for, except for Best Picture and I think Best Costume Design or something. It's like the Academy was saying Your actors stunk, your script was lousy and your cinematography could have been way better....but everybody was dressed very nicely and your movie was pretty good.
Think_Leadership_91@reddit
It wasn’t a popular movie among men- I dint recall anyone my age or older watching it except for mom’s groups going on a mom’s night out

Before the movie even came out I nerded out big time on the sinking and how so much of the events that night were painstakingly recorded or recalled by survivors.
So when the film came out I got to really enjoy Cameron’s attention to detail to where the story of Jack and Rose was just a means to showcase those things.

Eerily similar.
Got dumped from my first serious relationship that year. Was not interested in romantic movies. So I've never sat down and watched it.

I have also never seen Titanic. I didn't see it because I saw the original 1953 version when I was young, so I felt the remake was a mockery in a way. Plus, at the time, I worked in retail... I heard that song so much I loathed it. Still do, lol.
iwastherefordisco@reddit
I watched ET, The Goonies and The Lion King (original) years after they came out and asked what all the fuss was about? People were horrified.
You're safe here OP.

ayapapaya50@reddit
Don’t bother
TheSwedishEagle@reddit
I didn’t see it when it first came out and was sort of proud that I never saw it but eventually (years later) I did see it and I actually kind of liked it. Billy Zane was great as a villain and there is nothing but good things to say about Kate Winslet’s bosom.
tabicat1874@reddit
Hated that movie
Tardisgoesfast@reddit
I love Friends, and they aren’t pausing for a laugh track, they’re pausing for the studio audience.

had an ex bf that had to see that movie several times 🙄. I'm over it. Honestly the movie from 1945 with Barbara stanwyck was way better.
Tardisgoesfast@reddit
I didn’t watch it until relatively recently and I wish I hadn’t. It’s nothing much. Sappy fantasy love story when there were plenty of real ones being played out at the time. Although I do love Kate Winslet.
Superb_Yak7074@reddit
I have never seen Titanic either, even though my daughter bought it for herself.

WeirdRip2834@reddit
Just here to add that I don’t like that program either. Danny Devito scarred me for life in his role as the boss in Taxi. Scary Louie. Can’t unsee it.
glxym31@reddit
It’s Always Sunny is what would happen if the Seinfeld gang lost their jobs and started huffing glue.
anonymous_opinions@reddit

Head_Effect3728@reddit
Spot on analogy
anonymous_opinions@reddit
It's Always Sunny is hit or miss on the comedy. Also a lot more people might see themselves in one of the cast members of Seinfeld vs It's Always Sunny cast since the cast is so exaggerated.

Neither have I. When the press tour was happening, Leo was in Japan promoting it, and a teenager who worked for me in a gym back home was there modeling. He had a different teenager every night. Said he made her feel like trash.

The entire movie would have been better without the Jack and Rose subplot. The night itself held enough drama for a competent screenwriter. Bringing in a fictitious plot involving someone clearly over a hundred was inane. It couldn't sink quickly enough for me.

I’ve never watched a single Star Wars movie. I’ve never watched Friends. And the only good part of Titanic was the topless scene.

Don't watch it.
Honestly it was good at the time mainly because the Internet was newish and a combination of the hype and we were all still at the stage of believing in part things on the Internet, it's online presence helped the story. Years later the knowledge it isn't true means the film is average at best.
SevenSixtyOne@reddit
Not gonna’ lie. I bought the “This was found footage…” hoax at the time hook line and sinker.

idanrecyla@reddit
I can appreciate the efforts made to create the film but never cared for it. My main issue is it would seem there was enough drama inherent within the story of the Titanic not to need to create any. I would have loved to see an historically accurate, at least to the best of their abilities, film about the sinking of the Titanic. The whole contrived loved story and the ones surrounding it, the necklace, the door, all of it, so unnecessary. The real stories are so engaging, amazing, tragic, and brave, there's just no need to embellish

JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
Don't bother. I was mad no one would let me just fast forward to the wreck.
As for the English Patient, that is probably my favorite episode. I watched the English Patient in a dimmed room full of friends. At the end someone turned the lights up and everyone in the room was crying except me. I yelled, "You've got to be fucking kidding me!" It was terrible.
mnfimo@reddit
I also, never saw a minute of titanic. The boat fucking sinks, the end
Parking_Locksmith489@reddit
Lucky you.
It's long.
First, it's set in 1997 days as a prelude. Then the prelude continues.
Then, finally it goes to the past. Woohoo! But blue balls: they're not on the boat. Not even close to getting on the boat.
Then the get ready to board the fucking Titanic. Then they continue to prepare to board. It takes a while.
Eventually, they get on the boat. Great, except the boat is still docked and remains docked for a good while.
At one point way too long into the movie, the boat gets moving. Boats are not that great to look at, since they move slowly in one direction with nothing else around it.
At this point, you're kind of pissed because basically nothing happened and it's almost half the movie. Ridiculous romance happens, stuck up people being rich assholes on top, poor cheery people on lower decks. No one of them have anything to do with the Titanic, they're just on it, their background story meaningless to the plot of a boat sinking. The story is laughably weak.
So the boat just moves across the ocean, people are on it and absolutely nothing of any interest happened so far. Kate Winslet tits are flashed. Where the hell is that iceberg FFS?
Well, it's about to hit the boat. Eventually. You look at the screen and you think to yourself I'm ready for the boat to hit that iceberg right now.
The boat still moves straight ahead. More generic rich poor clash, but like in a very poorly written young adult style of storytelling.
So now fog, iceberg spotted, and there finally the collision. Great you think that's why we're here right, watching Titanic. What's next?
Well, the ship is now damaged. So it's gonna take water. But it does very slowly. It looks like there are not enough lifeboats for all the people, blablabla...
Numb, you look at people running in freezing water. How can they not get weak and blue and go in hypothermia? It doesn't make sense! You what else doesn't make sense? The boat no even looking close to sinking. But you made it this far so screw it, I'll watch the end.
But man, the end is very far down the road. Isn't the boat supposed to break in two and sink? Yes, but not yet. The boat has to be filled up some more. And rich assholes have to be more flagrantly assholes.
Then the boat eventually breaks in two parts but it's not sinking yet. Very slowly, it appears to look like the boat will sink. Eventually... It's getting close to sinking. And at one point, it finally does. Kate Winslet floats on a door, Leo is in the water, has been wet for more than an hour is clinging to the door and then he dies.
Wow, you say to yourself, I'm sure glad it's finally over. But it's not over. There is an epilogue. Back in 1997. Yes, back to the part that sucked even more than you remember. It's sucked even more because on top of being stupid and lame, what the old lady does makes even less sense that everything you have seen so far. There are no words to describe or incredibly stupid and bad and lame and a waste of your life that movie was when she throws it in the ocean.
Celine Dion. It's over. The best part is that Titanic song. Specifically because Dion recorded it once and that's what made it in the movie. Dion is not an artist I find all that interesting, but her vocals are truly masterful and impressive. I mean just one take and it's in the soundtrack. Epic and legendary. Dislike her music if you must, but there is no denying she's a terrific singer. I was given a ticket to one of her shows years ago and she's one of the best there is on stage. Her version of L'hymne à l'amour at the Paris Olympics is proof she's an absolute glorious vocalist.
So why? Why did it make so much money? The answer is sustained arousal. Women flocked to see Leo DiCaprio. Not gay men, because gay men like men. Women. If you left the theater to take a pee break, you walk back in and the smell of warm yeast was noticeable. You know those huge fans brought in to dry a base after a flood? Theater rented them all do dry the seats each night. Some women actually fainted of dehydration, because they were oozing wetness being aroused for 3 hours straight.
I don't recommend it. It's terrible. A movie with a weak ass lame story can't be a good movie.

There are few things as banal as the Gen X brag of "I've never seen Friends/titanic/ET etc. This may have been mildly interesting in the early 2000s, but only for the moment it took to move on to any topic that didn't dwell on someone's personal TV/pop movie viewing habits. Why are so many individuals dedicated to talking about things they haven't watched on TV? At least one could have a discussion if you talked about something you actually saw, but this tactic limits the topic to simply the person making the statement...wait, could it be that's the point? The thoroughly modern cult of self fascination

I liked Titanic (hey! And I frequently cry at sad movies, especially anything described as a "guy cry" movie: River Runs Through It, Field of Dreams, The Descendants, Shawshank Redemption—but Titanic failed to elicit a single teardrop.

Samesies! For me, it's because I felt too much raw emotion. The boat sank off my province. Even though the tragedy happened ages ago, I couldn't bear to watch a portrayal of all that suffering.

I’ve never seen Titanic either or any of the Fellowship of The Ring movies and I do not give fat rat’s ass. The weekend Titanic came out I went to see The Big Lebowski instead and I think I’m better for it.

My dad said why bother, he already knew how it ended.

I've never seen it either. No interest.
mangoserpent@reddit
I watched Friends few times, thought it sucked, I watched Seinfield a few times, thought it sucked.
I also do not like Tom Hanks and really only liked The Road To Perdition and thought his other movies sucked.
A ton of Gen X touch points especially movies and TV that we are supposed to love I think sucked.
I hated most of the popular teen and teen sex comedies they were smug and sexist and boring. I hated Tom Cruise before it was popular and my friends thought I was a weirdo.
-clawglip-@reddit
It was sold out THREE TIMES that I tried to go see it, so decided, “you know what? Fine, I’ll NEVER watch it!” And still haven’t!
elijuicyjones@reddit
Me either and I’m not about to screw this streak up by watching it.
querty99@reddit
lol You should def watch it just to see if you can live long-enough to break your old record.

I saw Titanic years after it came out. It’s epic. Worth checking out.

I too have never seen Titanic. I am 43. No desire. Have seen fragments on TV in passing. I know how its ends. The ship sinks.
goishen@reddit
Plus, I hear everyone dies at the end.
querty99@reddit
Titanic: meh. A better version is one I found on YT - a real-time, "real-view" from about 1,000 yards-out to the side.
Once in awhile, a fact about the event will pop-up.
Very very very quiet, except for one scary moment. I highly suggest it.

Watch the infinitely superior 1958 movie, A Night to Remember, instead. All the tragic sinking of the Titanic pathos w/o the trite, shoehorned-in “love story.”
smalltittysoftgirl@reddit
I never got the appeal either. Not a fan of Kate Winslet either.
DJfade1013@reddit
They're coming out with a Titanic part 2. 😂 For the most part it's a chick flick or disaster movie for men. Cuz women & children first. It's a fucked up love story between the aristocracy & the filth below which rarely happens
countess-petofi@reddit
Me neither. Over the last few years, I've made a new tradition of every holiday, watching a movie that I didn't see when it first came out because it was so popular that I got sick and tired of hearing about it. Titanic is penciled in for this Thanksgiving.
Fluffy-Match9676@reddit
I liked it when it came out. I think I was really into the costuming and the disaster scenes. The brief sinking scene with Isidor and Ida Straus got to me.
That being said, looking back, if I had known how Cameron treated the cast and crew, I never would have watched it. Total disgusting behavior.
Definitely was not an Oscar winning movie, but somehow it won. "The Full Monty" was better.
cheesecheeseonbread@reddit
"Serious" movies will always beat comedies at the Oscars, which is one of the reasons the Oscars are bullshit.

I waited over ten years after it came out to see it cause I thought it was gonna be some sappy flick with corny dialogue ... I wasn't wrong. You're not missing much.
On a side note, I'd like to mention that partly because of this movie I had very little respect for Leonardo DiCaprio, assumed he was just a pretty face that sold the movie to the ladies. If you're going to see a movie with him in, don't see Titanic, see the movie that made me realize what a good actor he is. The Aviator.

spoonfulofsadness@reddit
How can you hate it if you’ve never seen it. It’s a good romantic historical epic. The replica of the ship and its sinking was well done. It’s a movie.
porkchopespresso@reddit
I’m kinda assuming you’re a dude and really it’s not exactly a totally for woman movie but it is a bit of a romance. I don’t think dudes missing Titanic is a big thing.
If you’re not a dude then I don’t know. Never mind me I guess.
eejm@reddit
There are plenty of women who aren’t into romance (like me) and probably plenty of guys who are. Please don’t stereotype.
porkchopespresso@reddit
I mean I watched it and I’m a dude, but let’s also not pretend romance movies have a demographic
eejm@reddit
Saying romance movies have target audience is fine. Assuming it’s no big deal for a guy to skip it but odd for a woman is the problem.
porkchopespresso@reddit
That wasn’t at all what I meant but I think in an effort to not say “chick flick” my comment was poorly phrased

Titanic is great for what it is - an old-school Hollywood blockbuster with a great cast, a great director, amazing visual effects, and a paper-thin story. I was a hater for a long time and I made all the "I know how it ends" jokes, but after finally watching it, I gotta admit: that's a hell of a movie. Top tier Hollywood filmmaking.

I wish I hadn't. My girlfriend dragged me along, because her friend said "it isn't the movie you'd think it was". I kinda liked the start with Bill Paxton, then it turned to shit. Even David Warner and Victor Garber couldn't save it. What a slog, but you know, my girlfriend was there, I couldn't just walk out. She apologized after, because she could tell I hated it and it wasn't my kind of film.
The worst thing is, seven or eight years later, we were watching an interview with Jarvis Cocker and the interviewer made a reference to Titanic that JC didn't get. The same girlfriend thought it was so cool that Cocker hadn't seen Titanic, fucking infuriating

I’m not a fan either, saw it with an ex I despise as well. I do remember it being so heavy handed, it tried way too hard.
My wife watched over lockdown, she had ear phone on, but I did enjoy the early scenes where it was basically a tour as if they were making a video to sell White Star cruises. It was much better with no sound, but every time I looked up and saw anything with the story going on 🤮.

Bravo. Stay strong!

And don’t plan to either.

LOL I hated the English Patient as much as Elaine did. I laughed so hard, I had tears when I saw that Seinfeld episode. I sometimes wonder if I need to give it another chance now that I’m older and wiser. I was only 20 or 21 when it came out.
Titanic was good, though at the time I still thought it was overhyped. I actually caught some of it the other day on TV, and it does hold up though.
analogpursuits@reddit
Yeah I never did either. I'm one of those people who, when told by by dumb dumbs that a movie is good, I won't go see it. Too many dumb dumbs said it was good. So...nope. Same with Forrest Gump, same with Mama Mia, and many others. But I'm weird. So, there's that.
bmadccp12@reddit
Well, you already know how it ends.
The_Spectacle@reddit
you can be blasé about some things, /u/twicescorned21, but not about Titanic! It's over a hundred feet longer than Mauretania, and far more luxurious.

You being sarcastic?
Ohiogarbageman@reddit
I've watched it. It tucked. Had it been 1.5 hours instead of 3, I may have liked it.
neoyeti2@reddit
Meh - the boat sinks. That’s it.
Smgth@reddit
Me either. Looked boring.
in-a-microbus@reddit
Bro, is there a name for this kind of trauma ruining a perfectly good movie. Same shit happened to me, except it was "Road to Wellville"
Never seen titanic, though. Just not interested.
Vegetable_Storm_6045@reddit
Same
TheRateBeerian@reddit
Me neither
CheopsII@reddit
Why would anyone want to watch the Titanic anyway? Everybody knows the boat sinks in the end and that Jack could've fit on that door.
Don't even get me started on that old bat that tossed that necklace into the ocean. I would've shoulder tackled her out of the way to dive in and get it.
Saint909@reddit
I haven’t seen it either.
upnytonc@reddit
I’ve never seen the Titanic either. And that annoying Celine Dion song was all over the place for years. I still watch reruns of Seinfeld on a regular basis. It’s my comfort show.

Friends, Seinfeld, pretty much every sitcom from the 90s on annoyed me. I wanted to hate Titanic but I ended up crushing on Kate Winslet instead so I've seen it like 3 times.
imadork1970@reddit
Spoiler Alert: the boat sinks
DMonkeyMind@reddit
Also have not seen titanic.
SumoHeadbutt@reddit
you're not missing much, characters are pretty cookie cutter 1 dimensional
FarkMonkey@reddit
I've never seen it either. Just not interested. I do remember when it was released on video, the length was listed as 2 hrs. 77 mins or whatever, instead of 3 hrs. 17 mins.
DirectorBiggs@reddit
Same here never saw it, never a desire to.
jessek@reddit
Me either. But thanks to it being a large chunk of society’s favorite movie I know the entire story thru posts and memes and I feel at times like I have.
jblue212@reddit
Titanic is only worth it for the disaster scenes. it's otherwise a horrible movie.
Appropriate_Cow94@reddit
The movie is very well done. Great acting, direction and is beautiful. It is a great movie.
I never want to see it again.
Trudi1201@reddit
I've seen very few movies, I have the attention span of a fruitfly and if it hasn't hooked me in 10 minutes or less I mentally switch off.
dr_learnalot@reddit
You're fine.
LibertyMike@reddit
You aren't missing anything.
JerewB@reddit
I've watched it twice. Once when it came out, and once with my wife and daughter. The first time was enough, TBH.
ParticularCurious956@reddit
I've only ever seen a few episodes of Seinfeld and could not stand that show.
I watched Titanic for the first time during Covid. Much better than I expected, and I had no idea Kathy Bates was in it. She stole the show imo.
Erazzphoto@reddit
I stopped watching movies in the early 90s, not entertaining what so ever
