Why don't they do this for STU?
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
those propositions aren't blatantly violating state law
Newschbury@reddit
That remains to be seen. "U" forces decisions about hiring and pay, basically human resources decisions, and makes them a constitutional requirement. It doesn't matter whether or not the money to recruit and train is available, or if there is even enough talent to recruit.
"S" doesn't say anything specific about the city's immunity, just that it can be sued.
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
But those don’t specifically go against state law
Iant-Iaur@reddit
Fuck the state law.
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
Excellent contribution to the discussion.
Iant-Iaur@reddit
Has an added benefit of being true.
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
Haha, okay. Enjoy your drugs.
Fellowshipofthebowl@reddit
Found the Karen 🤦♂️
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
Not even slightly. I just don’t think it’s smart to welcome a lawsuit from the state when there’s much bigger issues than someone wanting to smoke pot.
fictionaldan@reddit
I would love for the state to waste their money on these and tie up hot wheels’ legal resources while they try to erect concentration camps in the state.
Hope your gas gets cheaper. It won’t.
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
I hope they spend as much as possible just to spite you.
fictionaldan@reddit
I hope you end up against the wall eventually.
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
Fear not, for I don’t lead a life of crime nor am an enemy of the state. I’ll be here long after you.
fictionaldan@reddit
Just like a good little German.
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
Yep!
redpillbluepill69@reddit
I read that the recent 5 cities who decriminalized MJ lawsuit from Paxton had already been dismissed in Austin?
I don't even smoke but like are we just going to cower to this jerk off? He sues for everything anyway
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
I mean it’s not necessarily up to him if the legislature won’t change the law as written…
Iant-Iaur@reddit
And you continue enjoying your Jesus.
permalink_save@reddit
Right, gotta keep our prisons full for that free labor. Couldn't have smaller governments ignoring larger ones against the law like Abbott blatently defying federal orders around vaccines. Oh... right.
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
Do you have any actual points to make
Old_Young_Spice@reddit
do you?
NotSafeForKarma@reddit
Yeah, that I don’t feel like it’s wise for the city to decide to expose themselves to more lawsuits
ArchReaper@reddit
Name and shame those who tried to do blatantly subvert the will of the people:
District 12 Council Member Cara Mendelsohn
District 13 Council Member Gay Donnell Willis
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson
cheknauss@reddit
Thanks for identifying them. If I ever get another chance to, I'll gladly vote them out.
UnknownQTY@reddit
Gay Donnell sounds like a Robin Hood characters.
Robin Hood, Little John, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlett, Gay Donnell.
Arse_Armageddon@reddit
Gay Donnell Willis
MichaelBrownSmash@reddit
Straight Donnell Willis would never
Arse_Armageddon@reddit
The liberals... are trying to take away our... marijuana...
MahFravert@reddit
Start calling them. Everyone.
SexyOctagon@reddit
Why reform marijuana laws when you can just spend millions on more police?
willisbar@reddit
The tickets don’t write themselves
Lightzephyrx@reddit
Why not both? Seriously, nothing wrong with more cops NOT enforcing shitty laws.
tap_in_birdies@reddit
Fuck it just sue them now
dumasymptote@reddit
Well considering this would be a violation of state law, they should slow roll this since they will just get sued under prop s.
datdupe@reddit
lol not sure why you're downvoted when this is likely. maybe people stopped reading after the comma
Oldsalty420@reddit
The usual assholes
robinsw26@reddit
Of course they did.
tla9442@reddit
Voting to amend the city charter to allow weed doesn’t supersede state and federal laws… 🤦🏻♂️
sequencedStimuli@reddit
Austin and San Marcos have been doing just fine under a similar framework so far.
tla9442@reddit
Just disregarding state laws….seems like a great idea. Next up, legalize rape, robbery, and murder.
Happy-Ranger-6971@reddit
Great logic. Do you know the difference between violent and non violent crime?
FranksGun@reddit
You do have a point. But from a case by case basis perspective this is one case where the state can truly go fuck itself, especially given the pieces of shit in charge. This is a minor enough thing that doesn’t affect people’s basic rights so as for it to make sense to allow cities to do what’s in the interest of their citizens. I’d say it really caters to what should be people’s basic rights. Voting to decriminalize rape and robbery would of course impede on basic rights so you can’t allow it to any extent and of course such propositions would never even be entertained. Dallas is a huge city and the people have spoken.
FranksGun@reddit
So then how was it even a proposition to vote on in the first place?
Ruggerx24@reddit
I bet you if that raise when through, they would have had that finished up before the sun was down following the election.
They wonder why their approval is so low….
nihouma@reddit
TbF, it was just 3 causing issues on this out of the full 15 member body.
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
Per the article the motion to amend it did fail, so at least that’s that
fbc546@reddit
Why didn’t I get to vote on this on my ballot?
Newschbury@reddit
https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/voters-handed-wrong-ballots-hundreds-ballots-missing-dallas-county-elections-dept/3701528/
Just in case you're being serious, turns out thousands of the wrong ballots were sent to the wrong registered voters.
fbc546@reddit
I am actually being serious, not sure why I got downvoted, I voted early in Dallas, my ballot was only for president, senator, and like 10 judges, and a couple other random people like railroad commissioner. I even looked up my ballot early and it matched what I was given at the voting booth.
volatilegtr@reddit
Is your address in the city of Dallas or Dallas county? These ballot measures were only on city of Dallas residents, but not Dallas county.
fbc546@reddit
Ahhhh that makes sense! Duh
1notadoctor2@reddit
Wtf??? Why isn’t this more widely reported? Are the out-of-precinct ballots even “valid” votes or just null? Wow
playballer@reddit
Putin of course
imperial_scum@reddit
They did the same thing in Denton.
3DS9@reddit
"WE THE PEOPLE..."
jmi60@reddit
Dope smokers betrayed by Liberal Dallas; say it isn't so.
Made_In_Vagina@reddit
I am a proponent of recreational cannabis, and live in a legal state (not Texas; this story showed up in my feed).
While I agree they're probably not doing this out of any sort of good intention, they do make a good point: if it's still illegal state-wide, this is very much a grey area in terms of actually making a legally-defensible action.
So IMO what they should do is simply say "until the state legalized recreational cannabis there is very little we can... except choose to rescind any local laws on the subject, and to not enforce state laws at the local level. You are free to do as you wish, and if you get busted by the state police you're on your own".
deconstructedSando@reddit
this is basically the approach austin has taken as far as im aware. hotwheels fuckin hates us for it, yet more and more cities are inching closer to taking the same approach because the state government is so incompetent.
SequoiaSaguaro@reddit
Dallas should secede from Texas do we can eat gummies in peace.
Dick_Lazer@reddit
How soon can we vote these assholes out?
KDizWHOiBE@reddit
To believe the government works for the people 🙄
Complex_Win_5408@reddit
The party of small government strikes again.
West_Instance_3599@reddit
Only reason to delay is the idiots in Dallas voted for this AND the measure where they can be sued for not following state law. Could argue that the voters told them they couldn’t enact it if they wanted to.
ViscountDeVesci@reddit
They all need to go.
