Comfortable_Ad9985@reddit
All of the countries are great. We have more customs that should unite us than customs that separate us. ❤️
inalibakma@reddit
Doch. I mean, only one of these countries has ever been the most powerful empire in history (2nd strongest military in NATO btw). However, you are free to put some smetana on it and seethe.

Bulgaria and Serbia in equal measure. Bulgaria because we've visited on a few occasions and every time I've felt so at home. Varna and Sofia are absolutely beautiful (in different ways), the people are kind and welcoming, and Bulgarian food is good.
AideSpartak@reddit
Yeah you could only wonder if history and the Great Powers at the time didn’t divide us what could have been. We are extremely similar yet it’s almost shameful to admit in both countries and there is still animosity even if cooled down
thatgirleliana@reddit
I've thought about this too after visiting. Culturally, there are definitely similarities and linguistically too (although I have heard mixed opinions about this part).
IvanMSRB@reddit
That animosity exists only on political/historical subs. Not in real life. I have met hundreds of Bulgarians and never ever felt a hint of animosity.
AideSpartak@reddit
I mean to some extent yeah, most people are normal and don’t hate random people, but even on Reddit or Facebook you can still see a lot of animosity between us. I know that it’s the internet but you don’t see the same between Serbians and Macedonians or Bulgarians and Romanians.
For example we used to hate each other with Greece because of you know, 1300 years of wars and crimes but there were serious steps towards reconciliation in the last 35 years and the animosity is practically gone outside some very nationalistic circles in both countries. Nothing like this has been done with Serbia and it does show if you ask random people what they think of the other country.
Endi_loshi@reddit
I visited Bulgaria for the first time few weeks ago. I thought bulgarians will be grumpy and unfriendly, as they sometimes are portrayed online, but they were so kind and friendly I was surprised.
thatgirleliana@reddit
Yeah, I don't why Bulgarians are portrayed online as grumpy and unfriendly. Each time that we visited, people were kind and friendly.
CrystaSera@reddit
I love Greece, those fuckers are so wholesome and welcoming during the summer when I visit(ed). I guess also Romania, sadly I didnt visit so Ill go with Greece #1 for now, followed by Romania
iIiiiiIlIillliIilliI@reddit
I thought it's like this everywhere, but fck the waiters in the UK for example were.... not very welcoming. (not all but plenty)
CrystaSera@reddit
People in the balkans are nice Id say, in the west its like office hours. Granted the place I visited seemed like a family business, but the fella was kind and smiling, even corrected my fucked up way of saying 'lamb, salad and beer' (I litcherally didnt even look at the menu just looked how to say it on google translate 20 meters from the restaurant and apit it out asap before I 'forget lmao)

CrystaSera@reddit

I feel like maybe this will be controversial, but I will post it anyway. There are 3 Balkan countries that I like more than others: Bulgaria, Romania & Serbia. There is not one of these countries that I like more than the others, and we have good relation with all of these countries. But I choose one for today, I know that most would not choose that country, and that one country is Serbia. I don't really like their foreign policy, and I'm not sure about the country as a whole, and I had to choose, but I want to write mainly about the people (the most important part of a country). We, Greeks, know the Serbs since the Middle Ages, both have influenced each other, both have been parts of the Ottoman Empire, both fought in the Balkan Wars and in the Modern Ages we never fought each other. The reason I like them is not because of "Orthodox Brotherhood" (i don't care about that, I'm not religious), but it's because: they just like me. Of course, mainly outside of the Balkans, Greece is liked very much because of its good image and public relations, and we really care about our image and it's the reason we chose to continue with our Greek identity instead of our other identity. But unlike most foreigners, people from Serbia like Greece more than for just its past achievements, beautiful land, or alignment with the West, we refused to bomb them in the 90's, and it was the right thing, Serbia was doing really bad stuff back then, but hospitals, civilians and children should not be killed or destroyed by NATO, this wasn't what we signed up for. Yes, Serbians did massacres and some idiot fascist Greeks took part, and it was wrong, I don't support anything wrong the Serbs did against their neighbours. I feel sad for them now (Serbs), many don't like them -they have very good reasons for that- I wish the Serbs will fix their relations with their neighbours (this will be done one day, time is needed, and some changes). Me and most Greeks have no problem with Bosniaks, Croats or Kosovar Albanians, we are not against them, we never were (we have nothing against you, idiots!), I am against Serbia's present policies but I chose the Serbs because -as I said before- they really like me (also, maybe noone would choose them), they show the Greeks much more appreciation than the others, I have received mainly (99% of the interactions -or more-) love from them, we don't have much of relations with the others, and those others don't really care about us. Also, it's a pity those others believe we dislike them because of Greece's relationship with Serbia, I already wrote about it. I really hope 1 day Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia & Kosovo make peace with each other (but it will take time).
2024-2025@reddit
You like them cuz they like you. And they like you cuz “Orthodox brothers”

What you on about? Apart from some food and some loanwords there’s nothing similar between us Kosovar Albanians and Turks
AcesTarot@reddit
I don’t understand why you’re so offended, that’s what I probably meant, Jesus Christ
redikan@reddit
When u say “we’re similar in culture and everything” you’re trying to say that everything about us is similar to Turks
AcesTarot@reddit
Alright, get over it, no need to be so uptight and intense
Pristine10887@reddit
Albanians have internalized islamophobia so we try to distance ourselves from anything oriental/Muslim in a futile attempt to become more appealing to our Western overlords
WorldClassChef@reddit
Well fwiw I’m not Muslim and I’m chill with Turks.
What you said is 100% true tho lmao
redikan@reddit
I’m Muslim bro, it’s just that as a Kosovar there is really no similarities that make us closer to Turks that other Balkan countries don’t have. Every Balkan country has Ottoman foods in their cuisine and Turkish/Ottoman loanwords in their languages
Virtual-Athlete8935@reddit
Some food and some loanwords are pretty big cultural similarities

MartinBP@reddit
Tbf, they started that conflict with us simply because they thought we'd be easier to beat than Austria-Hungary. We had no intention to be enemies with Serbia until they started their Greater Serbia/Pan-Slavism BS.
AideSpartak@reddit
Regardless of who you think is to blame for WW1 it’s still a really bad look to use it as an excuse for war crimes
FyLap@reddit
Wait - so when Austria Hungary invaded Serbia, Serbia decided to invade Bulgaria? Well that makes a whole lot of sense. Bulgaria is the aggressor in WW1 (joining Austria invade Serbia), and WW2 (joining the Nazis). You can tell yourself whatever you want but you have no right pretending you're better "than those evil Serbs"

Romania and Greece, because they are most friendly towards us on the internet at least, in the recent years Greeks even in real live, I have heard stories from many people who went to a vacation in Greece and they said Greeks were extremely friendly, some of them even learned some Bulgarian words, like do you want "цантицка/торбицка" (a shoping bag) and they felt welcomed there.
The other country was Serbia, because they influenced are modern culture in some way or we was exposed to it, like the music, their movies were watched and appreciated here and many Bulgarians see the because of it in a good light as cool people.
But for the past year or two I got exposed more to the Serbian online space and some of the population there see us as a second class people basically.
Like they often jump to the worst conclusions from the slightest thing a Bulgarian do and have done , have the worst stereotypes about us etc.
For example I watched one video of a guy who goes to different countries and try their food and give some opinions and it's obvious that the guy is lame, in that video he visited a Bulgarian restaurant in Malta and first he didn't like that the waiter wasn't speaking to him in Serbian, than when he went to pay the bill to one woman who wasn't the waiter by the way, he say to her if she understood him if he speaks Serbian and she said "Yep, no problem" and he joked by saying "Oh, now when I'm paying you understand me" and then he said "I'm joking", but later he uploaded a short video of it and the video ended before he said to her that he was joking.
And comments were just from nastier to the nastiest, like "what do you expect from a Bulgarian" to one "If you gave her a little bit more the Bulgarian lady would have suck your cock" and responses such as "yep, you would have given her too much, you know how they are, just give her a CD of Lepa Brena and some pair of jeans and she would be up to it", and those comments were fool of likes.
And I have read many such things even on their sub, like not only just jokes because of the stereotypes, but similar statements or jokes made in very distasteful or cynical way and often people didn't react negatively to that and even the opposite sometimes they get many upvotes.
Like I still don't think Serbs are bad people or many different from the other Balkaners, for sure more cocky than us at least, they have huge amounts of "malakas" like every country, we are with gypsies like that for example, like "bake it or cook it the gypsy remains a gypsy" and that's bad of course, but when I catch the same vibes from them towards us I start having some doubts that if I meet some of them they would see me in the same light just because I'm Bulgarian.
