That sounds like a good thing? Even if war wasn’t imminent or looming, I would want my country‘s military to be prepared for and prepare others for most possible scenarios. Honestly weird that something like this hasn’t been organized before

Well, the idea that Germany would have military operations that are not counter-insurgance, was frankly completely absurd until the 24.Feb.2023  For me and the other civilians I know, at least. The public debate was more about weather we need an army at all, it's nonexistent combat readiness was a matter of jokes, not serious discussion. I'm sure some experts new better all along, but they were not publicy visible. So having an army that can actually wage war is kinda like a new, weird concept.

> Well, the idea that Germany would have military operations that are not counter-insurgance, was frankly completely absurd until the 24.Feb.2023 The idea that the German military would have *any* operations that ain't strictly in self-defense of Germany also used to be absurd. As that's what the German military is still supposed to be to this day according to the Grundgesetz. So I'm kind of confused/surprised how you think "counter-inrugance" is the "line drawn", when the line originally used to be: *"German military has no reason to be active outside of defending Germany"* If I had to guess: You are younger and as such completely missed the paradigm shift that the Bundeswehr "defending" German democracy at the Hindukush, aka in Afghanistan, was seen as at the time. > So having an army that can actually wage war is kinda like a new, weird concept. Having an army that can actually wage an offensive war, projecting German military power outside of German borders, is not just a "new" or "weird" concept, according to the German Grundgesetz that's still a completely illegal concept for the Bundeswehr.

Guessed correctly, the Afghanistan mission started before I started to care about politics. Even the idea of the German Armed forces waging a defensive war was a new concept. That Germany has no possibility to project significant military power behind EU borders (without USA logistics and everything support) is  normal and acceptable state for the foreseeable future IMO. The "line drawn" at counter insurgance  was not about what the army Should do (that's to defend Germany and it's Leaders, industry and people) , but about what the army could do (not wage anything close to a peer conflict war) and how that lack of existing capabilities was not seen as a Problem. My comment was ment to be about the general civilian attitude towards the military (before Russias invasion started), not about the actual competences our army did or should have.

I agree in terms of public opinion, I grew up in the same Germany you did, but a professional army should (and probably had) have these plans drawn up and ready to go It speaks to the lacking securitization efforts at the Bendlerblock imo that the type of meeting discussed in the article hasn’t really happened before though

Good. Not overly aggressive but highly matter of fact language and assertive action coming from Northern European states. Dangerous 4 years (at least) ahead.

Germany is not in Northern Europe, it's in [Central Europe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Europe).

I have a very strong need to ban all news outlets from my feed and live in plain ignorance my remaining days (that don't look this many according to all the latest news)

While I can say the media is just saberrattling with remarks of fear to sell their articles, removing news articles definitely doesn't hurt much.

Translation by www.deepl.com: > **“Operation Plan Germany” - Bundeswehr prepares companies for war** > The Bundeswehr prepares companies for possible crisis scenarios Specific measures are presented as part of the “Operation Plan Germany” The first version of the strategy paper is 1000 pages long. > Preparations begin in Germany for the event of a war that has an even more direct impact on the Federal Republic than the Russian attack on Ukraine. > According to the “F.A.Z”, the Bundeswehr has recently started training companies on the basis of the “Operations Plan Germany” adopted by politicians. The first version of the strategy paper is 1,000 pages long and the details are secret. The role of industry is clearly outlined in the plan. > The first event was held at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, where companies were addressed directly. Lieutenant Colonel Jörn Plischke gave specific advice. “For every hundred employees, train at least five additional truck drivers that you don't need,” is his suggestion, according to F.A.Z. information. > The reason for the measure: “70 percent of all trucks on Germany's roads are driven by Eastern Europeans. If there is a war there, where will these people be?” In the event of an emergency, he advises companies to draw up a concrete plan of what is expected of which employees in the event of a crisis. > **Companies should become more self-sufficient - with their own wind turbine if necessary** > For self-protection, it is important that the entire workforce gets a feel for safety issues. Efforts could also be made to achieve self-sufficiency, says the lieutenant colonel, bringing the diesel generator or an in-house wind turbine into play. Talks like these in Hamburg should be held throughout the country. > “All state commands are tasked with the implementation,” the Bundeswehr told the F.A.Z.. Malte Heyne, Managing Director of the Chamber of Commerce, supports the approach. “We need to raise awareness of how important a well-prepared and resilient economy is for Germany's civilian and military defense,” Heyne said in response to an inquiry.
