Need Help Deciding Engine
Posted by PlaidHail@reddit | projectcar | View on Reddit | 78 comments
I own a 1991 3000gt, the car has been garaged kept and has barely any rust/rot. I have decided to make this a project car hoping to make it a 800whp vehicle. What are some engines that can produce that much horsepower? I am perfectly capable of modifying and rebuilding the engine if needed.
SendMe_SmallBoobs@reddit
LS4 with Cam and a turbo, K24 with cams and a turbo, 1UZ with cams and a turbo.
theuautumnwind@reddit
A turbo ls4 does not need heads to make 800...
SendMe_SmallBoobs@reddit
He said 800 at the wheels. 1000 crank hp from a stock headed 5.3 is quite a bit of boost. A better flowing head would make that power with less boost, thereby taking some stress off of the stock pistons and rods.
theuautumnwind@reddit
You think you're making 1000 crank with a k24 stock head and bottom end? Sure better heads on all those engines helps ...
SendMe_SmallBoobs@reddit
Upon further research, it seems I was thinking more about the restrictive head on the LM7 5.3 truck motors commonly used for "LS" swaps.
A K24 CRV head flows 289.5 CFM at 0.600" lift (intake).
A stock LS4 cylinder head flows 278 at 0.600.
A 706 head from a 5.3 LM7 truck engine flows 236 at 0.600
Can't find any data on a 1uz cylinder head.
tSirPenguin@reddit
He said 5.3, so not a k24..
theuautumnwind@reddit
K24 1uz and ls4 were all mentioned in the parent comment.
tSirPenguin@reddit
hmm?
phate_exe@reddit
To start with, why the 800whp goal? Have you driven/ridden in a 3000GT with that kind of power? Have you driven/ridden in anything with that kind of power?
The 6G72 that's already in there can make more power than you'll be able to put down through the front wheels (I'm assuming it's not a VR4 if you're asking about engine swaps instead of a turbo upgrade). People have converted base/SL's to AWD, but I'm not sure whether that's a "bolt in the VR4 parts" situation or not.
Swapping in a 4G63 with DSM parts is also common enough for mount kits to exist.
AJSLS6@reddit
It's a weld in chassis parts situation, very possible, but not likely if one is asking this kind of question.
phate_exe@reddit
A few of my friends were messing with 3/S's for a bit, so I've been around them enough to know it's possible and has been done, but haven't done anything beyond maintenance and bolt ons.
I usually try to put on my optimism hat and steer things back towards sanity when responding to posts like this, but it's really difficult when they pull things like "800whp" out of their ass.
qualmton@reddit
Saw it on a movie once and wants to live their life a quarter mile at a time. A minute googling would have show them a ls swap with a turbo would be the most financially viable way to get started on this train wreck maybe they just want a show car tho
ignaro@reddit
Body swap it onto a meth-injected big block monster truck and mob through mud pits in Arkansas. That's the only 800whp version that makes any sense at all.

Please don't be desecrating a VR4 for a crappy engine swap.
If you must do one of these with an engine swap, ruin a base model.
Beneficial_Ruin6806@reddit
Normally I’d agree, but rarity and difficulty in working on it are gonna be problems. The original engine is a great platform, but there’s so little free space under that hood, that you’re gonna have a hell of a time adding anything external. It can be done, and that’d be my preferred option… but…..😅
pogoturtle@reddit
Those newer Vq V6 Nissan and related engines? Or maybe a bmw b58 or n54?
Do you want to keep it strictly Mitsubishi?
HickBarrel@reddit
Transverse engine in this platform, so those are all impractical

Yeah. Like a 4G63

Blue print the engine with a Lanati cam, Babbitt bearings, special burn resistant valves & and head that doesn’t crack with heat cycles from the turbo like a Tungsten Niobium alloy . Nitros regulated as the last boost before making air speed.

6G72, 4G63, LS, Coyote, 2JZ, 1JZ, Hondas.
6G72 will be easiest given it already has one.

Dream big. RWD conversion and a twin-turbo LS-whatever mated to some twin-clutch magic gearbox.
Kazurion@reddit
The engine is sideways on that thing, isn't it? Unless you can weld custom mounts/reinforcements to make it longitudinal, there are not many options.
A built, turbocharged 4G63 or K series could push that power and be kept sideways with the AWD platform. You would require gearbox adapters though.
If you make it longitudinal and make it RWD, you could use pretty much anything that would fit, like an LS. Not sure how much power that rear diff can hold, it may or may not be an issue.
It's quite a complex car to swap things, tbh.
CharlieRatSlayer@reddit
As a previous VR4 owner, the stock transmission is the weak link. Ditch the drivetrain, so many parts are unobtainable.
Ditch the AWD. Keep the VR4 rear axle, LS V8, 6 speed manual, and a custom one-piece driveshaft. Engine computer of your choice. There's some people on YouTube that have done the swap
a-hippobear@reddit
Ls4 is transverse.
DmOcRsI@reddit
I was gonna say... that'd be an interesting one to see, but I suspect the drivetrain would be a PITA unless you wanted to go FWD... but at that point, it's a huge step-down.
a-hippobear@reddit
The vr4 is transverse awd so all he’d have to worry about outside of normal swap bs is mating the drivetrain. Personally, I’d mount up a cd009 with an LS longitudinally and make it rwd, but most people don’t want the extra headache and fabrication.
DmOcRsI@reddit
Mating the drivetrain on two motors that I would imagine would have significantly different dimensions and even possibly different rotations could be a task. I haven't looked into the details though.
_clever_reference_@reddit
It's really not a big deal at all to do. You just buy an adapter. Been done a bunch and there's a handful of companies that sell them.
Is it the best option? Personally I'd just get a t56.
DmOcRsI@reddit
No no, I meant for the AWD. CD009's have kits galore.
cat_of_danzig@reddit
An LS4 is about 5" longer from crank to pulley as well.
Isamu29@reddit
In a 3000gt… hope you are gonna stiffen up the frame and add in some cross bracing. Plus putting that kinda power to the ground.

If you have to ask what engines are good then 800hp is too much power for you. Just because you can wrench doesn’t mean you can wheel. But I don’t have faith you can wrench either. Most people who can wrench know what engines to look for.
dicrydin@reddit
I don’t really know much about this platform, what diff does this thing have? Getting 800whp on a dyno is one thing but it’s different where the rubber meets the road.
Manical-alfasist@reddit
I’m in New Zealand. There are still a few 3000gt’s. About. I always considered them as the unloved cousin of the 300zx which were common like mud. Technical and ahead of there time. You could go down the transplant route with like the others have said. 4g63 of k24 but personally I’d keep the engine in it. Different turbos and injectors. Aftermarket ecu blah blah.
Here there was a just a generic Corolla 4 door. Like a ke70. 4age swaps were real common. His was unusual as it had an injected 4K in it. To be different he kept in original ish. Built the motor with a t25 turbo. Aftermarket ecu and forged internals. Yeah it cost a bit to build but very cool in the end.
shroomkat85@reddit
Shit bro most engines can make that kinda power if you build them enough. Whatever you, make sure you do obscene amounts of research so you realise what you’re getting yourself into. This isn’t going to be just swap a new motor in. This is going to be swapping a new motor, transmission, and literally everything else from the mounts and driveshaft is going to have to be custom made. Some of these custom parts may exist but they probably don’t and I hope you know a few machinists.

I assume this is an SL trim in which case your best bet is to find a way to convert it to the Twin-turbo setup from the VR4. I don't know a ton about these engines but the OEM Twin-turbo setup made about 300hp back in the day so with some bolt-ones and a tune, you could probably hit 500 easy.
But that's assuming you make it that far. I've heard these are awful to work on and it's pretty rare to see anyone actually build these to a decent state.
SlightlyDrooid@reddit
I’ve got a buddy that has a vr4 in his garage, as well as most of another one behind it (and an SL in his driveway). He was telling me the vr4 block is good for 750hp but I don’t remember what needs to be done, if anything, to make it reliable or whatnot at that level.
Either way, they (vr4) are kinda rare and really heavy so yeah not a whole lot of folks build them from what I can tell. Parts aren’t as easy to find or cheap as you’d expect either
RiftHunter4@reddit
Also complex. Even the SL came with auto-climate control and electron suspension. Just a lot of 30yo tech to look after on top of your standard Mitsubishi problems. Cool car, but it's definitely more of a GT. I'd get one if it weren't the headache of maintaining it. Just the Eclipse, it's a labor of love.
I_Stabbed_Jon_Snow@reddit
K-swap will have the most aftermarket support of any 4 cylinder, LS will has that for V8. Yes it’s cool to look at other options, but unless you’ve got extremely deep pockets or high-end tuning skills you’ll need their standalone engine management options.
IDKMBIKILY@reddit
Oh man. Hell yeah! Yeah, you know, it's just that simple. Which engine can do that guys? Just doot de doot, slam that new 800hp engine in there, no problem.
You have no idea what you're doing. Oh my fucking god, Jesus lord save me.
If this were true, you wouldn't be asking. This has to be a joke. This is the "I know what I got...no lowballs..." on Craigslist.

Get away from that car. Fucking hell dude. What the fuck is wrong with you? 800hp...Barely any rust of rot!!! How wealthy are you? Cause I'm super well off. Like seriously. And you couldn't fucking pay me to touch that car. Fuck man. Stick tap to you for being a fucking hero dude.

If you’d like to keep it transverse, I’d say the Toyota 1MZ-FE, Honda J35 (J32 is easier to find), or a LS4 from the Chevrolet Impala SS.
Keep in mind that you’ll still need custom mounts, a standalone ECU, wiring harness, and a bell housing adapter if you don’t want to use the transmissions that came from those engines. This isn’t an exhaustive list, they’ll be more things to fabricate and or hunt down. Exhaust manifolds for one. Good luck.
phate_exe@reddit
While I like all of those engines, the car already has an engine that's capable of lots of power if you start cramming boost into it.

VG30DETT from the late model 300ZX.
Still a 3 liter V6, but is very strong. 800HP is quite doable with beefed up internals and the right amount of boost
HickBarrel@reddit
Unfortunately, the 3000gt is set up with a transverse engine orientation. So rwd-only engines are not a viable option. That, and the VG30DETT is notoriously a headache of an engine.
RunningLowOnBrain@reddit
I didn't realize the 3000gt was transverse. I agree, that's gonna stop basically all the rwd platform engines unless you just love custom fab work.
a-hippobear@reddit
4g63t or an ls swap. The ls4 is transversely opposed so you could keep the original gearbox and have that sweet ls platform without a ton of fabrication.

4G63. Iron block 2 liter that can make ~600 on stock internals. Tons of aftermarket support. It's not an uncommon swap for 3kgt owners that want more power with less hassle.
whyidoevenbother@reddit
Agree. Fairly well documented online. One also gets gobs of engine bay room, which can be helpful with big power goals if OP's going to go wild with the turbo, manifolds, etc.
