Surprising the P-8 doesn’t have the engine chevrons
AshMain_Beach@reddit (OP)
It’s based on the NG that’s why
Dangerous-Salad-bowl@reddit
Can someone explain the differing approaches to wing-tip solutions?
Silly_Outside2633@reddit
The 737-900 has to reduce its wingspan. The p-8 does not have to worry about fitting into gates etc
Mimshot@reddit
This is true in so far as the P8 doesn’t fit into an ICAO class C gate like a 737 does so that wasn’t a design constraint. The reason they needed to change the wing design at all was to support advanced anti-ice systems. The P8 needs to loiter in icing conditions while the 737 will typically just be climbing through them.
caverunner17@reddit
I assume a potential future folding wingtip design (like the 777X) could be a possibility for whatever the MAX replacement is. I wonder what the fuel burn difference would be with the larger wingspan.
Silly_Outside2633@reddit
Yeah I agree. The folding wingtip design may be incorporated more into new Boeing models as a standard
bobith5@reddit
I wouldn't say that's likely just because of the 777x.
The 777X folding wingtip is just a derivative of the folding wing Boeing offered on the original 777-200.
HokieAero@reddit
Yes, but a very different design than was proposed for the "B777-100" which was designed for operations at La Guardia.
blackteashirt@reddit
More complex parts are more likely to break
Waddoo123@reddit
P-8s are based on the NG design rather than MAX. That said, the wingtips are still raked.
wrongwayup@reddit
Perhaps. Though the benefits of aerodynamics versus weight, and the reliability issues related to the higher cycles of short haul, might mean the designs diverge a little.
Dangerous-Salad-bowl@reddit
Thank you! Makes total sense.
ZippyDan@reddit
u make total sense
Silly_Outside2633@reddit
Your welcome!
Silly_Outside2633@reddit
Also notice the p-8 has more swept back wings
RealGentleman80@reddit
Same wing, the P-8 has raked wingtips vs winglets which makes it look more swept
Sweetcheels69@reddit
Longer reinforced wing for high load and armaments.
Kjartanski@reddit
Imagine launching a sidewinder off an airliner
Before anyone comes at me i know the hardpoints are for Harpoons
newworkoutgloves@reddit
I’m sure some engineer had designed a hard point conversion and software just for shits and giggles. Anything to keep the 22 from getting an intercept
h00ha@reddit
777 has the same.
HokieAero@reddit
Airlines like to put their logos on winglets.

Dangerous-Salad-bowl@reddit
Perfect. Thanks.
kernpanic@reddit
Different roles. The 737 spends most of its time climbing or above 32,009 feet.
The p8? 500 feet.
Thunderbudz@reddit
I dont think the p8 actually spends that much time below 1000 ft. The majority is probably between 3k-15k
TimeSpacePilot@reddit
32,009 is oddly specific for a number that means nothing in aviation 🤣
Silly_Outside2633@reddit
🤣
kitsapguy6199@reddit
I believe I remember in a brief that they are 800 wings, as the mass manufactured 900 wings couldn't hold the weight of ordanace. I can't remember why they went with raked vs blended winglets, but if memory serves it had something to do with fuel efficiency.
flightist@reddit
Other way around. It’s an 800 fuselage and (slightly beefier) 900 wings, because it has virtually the same MTOW as the 900.
kitsapguy6199@reddit
I fully trust you!! I was on my way out as we were bringing her on...most of my hours are in the old reliable (or unreliable...lol) P-3! I remember the first deployment and having to be backup in case the P-8 drives didn't load....ugh!!

rudedogg1304@reddit
That grey is fucking beautiful
Bepus@reddit
Looks like Nardo Grey
Trokeasaur@reddit
But does it have Quattro?
Green-Virus-7193@reddit
That belongs to the indian navy
Old-Car-9962@reddit
Just two Boeing homies catching up over a cup of Jet A1
Spotted_Howl@reddit
Almost literally flying destroyers, they are something else.
Tony_Three_Pies@reddit
One of these planes has an EICAS and the other one doesn’t because fuck you that’s why.
e_pilot@reddit
The both have EICAS but only one goes to a screen.
jabbs72@reddit
Something something Recall
MuteMouse@reddit
"Can I copy your homework?"
"Yeah just change it up a bit so it doesn't look obvious you copied"
e_pilot@reddit
I can see the EICAS from here
Greydusk1324@reddit
Are the main airframes the same for both versions? I see the wingtips are different but what about the fuselage etc.
flying_wrenches@reddit
They’re different. Windows, doors are obvious, internal is definitely different too.
indr4neel@reddit
It's not identical but it is also a 737, an -800, with -900 wings.
Danoct@reddit
Other than the bomb bay, one of the bigger differences would be holes in the fuselage to allow dropping of sonar buoys I assume.
Casen_@reddit
No type rating though because fuck you, that's why.
smoky55@reddit
There the same but different.
MeltingP0int@reddit
Same same but difflantt !
Master_Cod_1924@reddit
Where in India is this photo taken ?
flightwatcher45@reddit
KBFI 100%
NetworkDeestroyer@reddit
This isn’t in India, this looks like where they park airplanes after manufacturing
kash80@reddit
This must have been in Seattle before the P8i was delivered to the Indian Navy.
yamthirdnow@reddit
Now if only all planes had windows that big…
Silly_Outside2633@reddit
Put 787 windows on Concorde.. I wanna see that 🤣
