Do you own a VR headset?

Hey, I saw some comments on here from other VR headset users and it made me curious how many of us Xennials have headsets. We grew up dreaming about this stuff. I have had every Oculus headset since the CV1.

I used them in a job, once. I don't have an issue with them. It's just not for me anymore than console gaming over PC gaming is for me.

I have a Valve Index, and it's pretty amazing. Tethered sucks, but my overhead cable system works pretty well, and I have the space for it. New 4070 Super comes today, so I'm pretty excited to see how modded Skyrim performs now. Even with the 2070 super, fully modded Skyrim is probably the coolest VR experience I've had, even if the controls are a bit complex.
I see a lot of comments about motion sickness. Yeah, VR legs are a "thing", but as someone susceptible to regular 3rd person video game motion sickness, I can definitely say frame rate and resolution have an impact. Room Scale VR where you can just move around in game and teleport minimize the worst motion sickness aspects. Free movement with the joystick is nearly a "no go" for me. I can do Skyrim if I build up to it and move really slow. It helps to act like I'm on a skateboard :P.
Our generation also had a weird chunk of time between CRT screens and flatscreens for shooting games. On flatscreens you couldn't just use your pistol sights to aim (flatscreens had you set a boundary by shooting the corners of the screen to set the crosshairs, which worked as long as you didn't move from your spot). VR came in and we finally have awesome shooters again. Everyone loves Hot Dogs and Hand Grenades but my favorite is Gun Club VR: it's like a modern Hogun's Alley. Space Pirate Trainers is fun as hell. I call it tower defense where you have waves of enemies and see how long you last. When their shots get close to you time slows and you get a Matrix bullet time experience.
And of course, Half Life Alyx is still the AAA king. Even running at higher settings it's optimized so well I almost never have frame drops. The game play is fantastic, and the story is fun. It has extremely easy to use controls which a lot of games seem to struggle with. Arizona Sunshine for example: I love that game and it's humor is hilarious. But the controls are so damn wonky sometimes with how you teleport and turn, advanced reloading hits your controllers together, etc.
Lastly, a couple other favorites: Audioshield (uses your own music library for a beat saber sort of experience), Loco Dojo (goofy mini game contest), Pierhead Arcade (oldy but goody: mini games), QuiVR and QuiVR Vanguard (archery tower defense. Super fun), Racket NX: (racketball inside a sphere with some goofy and fun ball control), Space Pirate Trainer (arcade shooter, tower defense), Superhot VR (enemies move when you move), Premium Bowling, VAR: Exterminate (arcade zombie shooter tower defense/waves)

Got a Quest 2 I use for some video games. It's cool and all, but I'm a little disappointed how half-baked the thing is. For instance, any normal person I talk to about VR asks "oh cool, can you like tour the Taj Mahal with it or something?" Nope, travel VR clips are pretty limited to 5 minute narrated tours of varying quality.
Helgafjell4Me@reddit
I use my Quest 3 for games, not TV or movies. It's easy enough to ignore all that other stuff. It's not half baked, it's just content you're not into and that's ok.
gnrlgumby@reddit
Well by half baked I mean is there’s 2-3 different app stores, app from big brands abandoned for years, stuff like that. It works pretty seamlessly for some uses.
sactownbwoy@reddit
I have the Quest 2 and use it for Elite Dangerous. Amazing game that is pretty much a 1-1 of the Milky Way. They even use known astronomical data from astronomy sources to populate identified stars and planets. Their stellar forge system fills in the rest using what we know about the galaxy.
One of the best space sim games I've played. It is crazy cool in VR. You get a real scale of the size of the stars, planets, ships, space stations, and other stuff.
Helgafjell4Me@reddit
I bought that one and also No Man's Sky. Haven't started either yet since they seem like they will take a lot of time and dedication to play and I'm not ready for that commitment just yet.
I'm playing Half Life Alyx for a second time right now because it is fantastic. It's only like 8 hours to play thru it all, but it's really well done. Played Vertigo 1 & 2 before that and had a blast. Vertigo 2 is awesome.
sactownbwoy@reddit
Elite Dangerous is a time commitment. No Man's Sky, not so much.
Bit beautiful games in VR. No Man's Sky is more interactive with the Quest Controllers. Elite Dangerous is not.
One-Earth9294@reddit
I can't believe that yes is so prevalent.
How do you fellow old fuckers not have motion sickness from that kind of thing?
lostnthenet@reddit (OP)
There is something in the VR community called getting your VR legs. It's a lot like getting your "sea legs" when going sailing. In other words, you have to practice. Get into playing a short game here and there and when you start feeling sick, take off the headset. Eventually you will be able to do it without getting sick as your brain will adjust to it. Plus as the resolution and refresh rates have increased it has gotten better and better.
cmack@reddit
nah brah, I wasn't dreaming bout this. I go outside and do things
whahaaa@reddit
fooled me once with Virtual Boy, never again!
Helgafjell4Me@reddit
Modern VR headsets like the Quest 3 are worlds ahead of Virtual Boy.
Helgafjell4Me@reddit
Got into it about 2 years ago. First got Quest 2, then upgraded to Quest 3 when that came out and gave my wife the Q2. I also bought myself a $4k gaming PC to use with SteamVR and it's been amazing. Its like my childhood gaming dreams come true. I'm currently playing thru Half Life Alyx for a second time because it's just too good. I also do cardio workouts with it using Beat Saber and Punch Fit. I've tried other fitness apps, but I like switching between those two the most.
aardw0lf11@reddit
Yes, but only use it for applications and games which don't make me sick which rules out a lot of things. I get motion sickness very easily.
SweetCosmicPope@reddit
I have the Quest 2, but I can't play it very long before I start getting sick. My wife got it for me for Christmas a couple of years ago and I ended up getting an Oculus Link cable for it and giving it to my son who plays a few VR games on steam with it.
poindxtrwv@reddit
I still have my Virtual Boy.
MyOxenDied@reddit
Im in the VR industry so I have several headsets for my job. But if I wasn't in the industry I wouldn't own one.
SashimiRick@reddit
Wife and I both have Quest 3s. Walkabout Mini Golf is our favorite thing to play together. It's so incredibly fun and makes for an easy date night when kiddo is put to bed.
Alone, I'm really enjoying Attack on Titan and the Vader games.
VR is everything I hoped for as a kid at this point. I'm loving it.
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
I might get one eventually. I've tried Workplace Simulation or whatever once, I think I'm still waiting for an adequate catalog of software to get me to go for it.
PilotC150@reddit
We got an Oculus Quest 2 during summer of 2020. We used it for Supernatural (fitness app) quite a bit for a long time. Then it just kinda faded away and nobody uses it now.
I might pick up a Quest 3 for Flight Simulator 2024.
Z0na@reddit
I never really wanted one until that new Batman game came out. I’ve always loved the Arkham games going back to Xbox 360
GotWood2024@reddit
Not yet. I sprung for one of those cell phone headsets to watch some 360 YT videos with my 86 y/o grandma.
fuzzynoodler@reddit
Nope. Seen Lawnmower Man one too many times.
eggs_erroneous@reddit
Man, that movie made me thing that VR was right around the corner. And it just kinda never happened. We have it now though. I was so excited to try the VR porn, but it weirds me out because you can accidentally make eye contact with these girls and that feels... bad.
histprofdave@reddit
Nope. My dad bought one when he retired, and I tried it out a couple times, but I wasn't into it.
Lord_Darlantan@reddit
I have PSVR. Let me tell you, that extra added mission to Star Wars Battlefront, it was just a little 10-15 minute mission. It was the greatest thing ever as a Star Wars fan. Lol and then we got Squadrons. 🥰💚
DontYuckMyYum@reddit
I have gen 1 HTC Vive. Was really into playing all the demos during the first week I had it. it's been sitting in my bedroom closet since then. I always plan on pulling it out and setting it up again but I never do.
I would like to get a newer version, especially one that easy to use for people who wear glasses. I remember not getting a good seal around the areas where the arms of my glasses are on m y face so I would have light bleed through, also had an issue with my glasses fogging up really bad so I'd have to stop every few minutes to wipe them off.
braxtel@reddit
What would it be like to go back in time 30 years and explain to a 12 year old me the futuristic technology that I now have access to? I was playing simple games on an i386 back then.
DarkenL1ght@reddit
I've never used one, although I technically owned one. I got one in a bundle with my laptop, then sold the headset without opening it.
I'm not oppose to them, just don't see the use-case. None of the games I've seen seem interesting. I haven't seen any other uses that appeal to me at the moment, though that will probably eventually change and hardware and software improve.
delibertine@reddit
My wife and I are both gamers, we're waiting until there are enough of the kinds of games we want to play before getting one
FreezingRobot@reddit
I have an Oculus Quest 2. We got it as a gift awhile ago. My son doesn't like it, he says it gives him headaches and he gets bored of it very quickly. I've played a few games on it but generally speaking there are only a few good ones. Watching videos, even the immersive ones, gets boring pretty quick, especially when you have a heavy hot thing strapped to your face. Also fuck Facebook.
I think someday we'll get to the point where the tech will get smaller/cheaper/more powerful and it will become more mainstream. I don't think we'll be there for awhile.
is_that_optional@reddit
I had a PSVR headset and upgraded to a Vive Pro 2. I don´t use it enough to convince myself it was a good investment but Blade and Sorcery is super fun when I wrangled myself into installing all the VR stuff again.
For me there were always issues, like games being rendered two times resulting in massive performance issues or the height resetting mid game. It´s always more of a hassle than it should be. Now it´s been sitting in the corner for 9 months waiting for the next round.
jtho78@reddit
I have a modded Oculus 2 but only use it for daily working outs. The games are visually immersive but the rest isn't enough to pull me in for regular gaming. It was a nice virtual getaway during covid.
I also grew up dreaming about it and always kicked myself for not trying whatever system the 90s mall kiosk had.
Bakingsquared80@reddit
My partner has one for the playstation. I hate it, it makes me motion sick
Verbull710@reddit
I have a reverb g2. Played a ton of DCS with it but got out of videogaming. It was super fun though!
