Why Grendel and not Creedmore?
weighted_walleye@reddit
Because Creedmore doesn't exist.
TheHancock@reddit
Freakin gottem! 🤓🤓🤓🤓
Creedmoor purists rejoice!
weighted_walleye@reddit
It's the mistake too easy to make haha!
THE-KINHINGUIZERA@reddit
Damn, I wanted to know if it's worth buying a rifle with precision sights or a rifle
1whitetail2024@reddit
That's still a baby.lol
CGShots@reddit (OP)
Mature doe producing milk. Angle makes her look smaller than she was.
neuromorph@reddit
You taste that milk, bro?
csseekingtruth@reddit
You can milk anything with nipples
EsotericAbstractIdea@reddit
I have nipples. Can you milk me, Greg?
Silent-Permission-27@reddit
Southern deer are small
No_Composer_9594@reddit
How many inches is ur gun
AgentAaron@reddit
Not the OP, but looks like an 18" barrel with about a 6" can. Pretty standard for a hunting rifle.
The doe looks on the smaller side. If her and I crossed paths, I probably would have given her another year personally.
TheJesterScript@reddit
Like the rifle setup. That is a funny camera angle, though.
The barrel looks like it is 26" long lol
thejoshfoote@reddit
Muh gunz
TheJesterScript@reddit
Are you lost?
Reacti0n7@reddit
congrats and all, but why the shot placement? -unless the shot came from the other side
was always taught to shoot behind the front shoulder into the vitals.
JoeHardway@reddit
Sorry, OP!
Know pics can be deceivin, but that does look lika pretty lousy shot. Ifu don't have the angle to maka HUMANE shot, u actually can WAIT, and even NOT TAKE IT. And, ifu din't hit WHERE u were aimin, well, u know what tha fix for that is...
CGShots@reddit (OP)
She dropped where I shot and didn’t suffer which is the main thing. The shot being where it was is most likely from me pushing the trigger when I shot. Crap happens unfortunately. Been hunting for close to 40 years and if you hunt for any length of time you just accept that and move on. I typically harvest 1-2 per year and I’d much rather have this shot than a gut shot or blow out the front shoulders. When I can I’ll make a neck shot to preserve as much of the meat that I can.
neuromorph@reddit
Um....you may want to retake hunter education. You severed a spine. It did suffer until you waddled over to the corpse.
You need a heart shot to instantly call an animal anything else is suffering and damages the meat.
Harry_Trees@reddit
You are so up your own ass if you think you can only take a shot if it’s guaranteed to hit the heart. First off nothing is sure in life, so write that down. Then touch some grass.
Also, heart shots don’t guarantee less suffering, it’s just a desirable placement because it improves the odds of a quicker death. I’ve had a deer take a couple minutes to die after running 30+ yards and his heart was a mangled mess after a .30-.30 tore directly through it.
If you are trying your best for a humane kill and something goes wrong you do your best to rectify it and learn from it. Not cry because you’re some kind of monster or moron. Hunting is beautiful because it forces you to confront life on life’s terms. There is an intrinsic lack of control within such activities.
TheJesterScript@reddit
I split a deer's heart all but in half with .243. It ran 30 to 40 yards, although it was down a steep slope.
I was amazed that it made it that far with it's heart destroyed.
neuromorph@reddit
Not but I'm not subsistence hunting. Ideal plavwmt is ideal. But this OP is defending his placement like it's intentional. That's my issue here.
Remarkable-Opening69@reddit
I’d say most deer suffer.
2017hayden@reddit
Quite frankly getting shot through the heart/lung/spine etc is far more humane than the way most deer die. If it drops on the spot it’s dead in seconds a minute or two tops, most wild animals don’t get that clean of a death.
BeenisHat@reddit
The blood coming from the deer's nose would seemingly indicate a good lung hit. Instant death comes from a headshot. If you're shooting for heart/lung shots, you're always going to cause the animal considerable pain, but it's going to expire rapidly as its blood volume plummets.
OP said it dropped where he shot it, so I'd say that's as humane as it could've been.
Then_Possible_9196@reddit
Dead’s dead
BananeBumbu@reddit
This... OP's shot placement is disconcerting.
CGShots@reddit (OP)
Shot across a creek while standing up high in the other side. She was slightly quartered toward me. Shot a little farther back than I wanted, probably pushed the shot a tad. Was aiming high/rear of the front shoulder. Would’ve rather taken a neck shot but didn’t have a good one through the trees. Still a good wound cavity and the core kept trucking out the other side. I recovered the jacket.
Specialist_Ferret292@reddit
What projectile?
pjoshyb@reddit
Your meat appears to have a hole in it.
Dry_Ad3367@reddit
All that matters is its DRT, Dead Right There, congrats!
FatBastard_78@reddit
Here in central Kentucky, deer are turning into a nuisance animal. In my county, I can kill unlimited doe even with landowner exemption. I had to put one down Friday morning on the side of the road that was hit by a car and left to die.
TheGolfinDolfin@reddit
Grendel or Creedmoor for a newbie that wants to get into hunting deer and hogs (Texas) and go!
donttreadontrey2@reddit
You can use a 223 to hunt in Texas are deer aren’t that big
TheGolfinDolfin@reddit
Ya but I’m lazy so I want a more bigger bullet, I like that 308 is plentiful and affordable but I like the performance for less of 6.5 cr, I like the idea of 6.5 gr and 308 so I can use it in ar10s
thatgymdude@reddit
Can you hunt with 300BLK, I always was curious about that lol.
donttreadontrey2@reddit
Sure why not?
Dcm155@reddit
I’ve smoked a lot of game with 6.5 Grendel. Never disappointed with it
thatgymdude@reddit
Cant get meat fresher than that, I always wanted to hunt as I am a big fan of venison, but the mule deer here are so skinny. Nice score OP, that will set you up for awhile!
cast-n-blast@reddit
More meat on a double cheeseburger than that little thing.
CGShots@reddit (OP)
The meat processing work today says otherwise. She’s average size for this area, 120ish
cast-n-blast@reddit
120 is a decent doe. Must be the perspective of the photo, that thing looks about 60lbs.
z3r0c00l_@reddit
Nice rifle, bad shot.
KEBobliek@reddit
Nice! Shoot a bit more forward next time to not risk missing the lungs.
CGShots@reddit (OP)
I pushed the shot and take the hit on that. No excuses there
Hell-Comes-Home@reddit
Is the gun huge or the deer tiny
Elijah_Man@reddit
I'm betting on tiny deer for some reason. Still curious how big that gun is though.
CGShots@reddit (OP)
Mature doe producing milk. Didn’t see any young either her, but she sure had some with her recently. Angle makes her look smaller than she was. The rifle is a 16” with a can. Looks long with the can no doubt.
Elijah_Man@reddit
What state are you in if you don't mind me asking?
CGShots@reddit (OP)
In Kentucky. Typically harvest a buck then doe, but the bucks have been scarce this season. Took a 10 point last year and the year prior.
Remarkable-Opening69@reddit
Ever hunt elsewhere? I always laugh at the deer I see posted from southern states. Makes Michigan deer look gigantic.
CGShots@reddit (OP)
I grew up in Florida where dogs are larger than the deer. About the same in NC where I live. This one was probably 120, about average for the area I’m in.
CGShots@reddit (OP)
Mature doe producing milk. Angle makes her look smaller than she was.
Hell-Comes-Home@reddit
Ah, the prized Doe who’s producing milk.
CGShots@reddit (OP)
She was by herself otherwise I’d have not taken a shot if I saw any young. Watched her for about 15 minutes as I worked down a ridge to take a shot. Didn’t inspect her tits through my scope. Might have to do that next time. By this time any young should be grown enough to make it on their own or atleast integrate into other groups of deer.
huh82@reddit
Production of milk means you have some lighties that are gonna starve? see the milk through your sights? Ethical hunting my dude
BeenisHat@reddit
You're acting like deer are an endangered species. They're basically giant mice.
JakeEngelbrecht@reddit
They don’t have to be endangered to hunt ethically
BeenisHat@reddit
I don't see anything unethical about this particular kill. Looks like a solid lung hit judging by the blood from it's nose. OP says the deer dropped where it stood. His caliber of choice has plenty of power to ensure penetration.
CGShots@reddit (OP)
Can’t see that at this kind of distance man, come on. At this time of the season the young are grown enough to make it in their own or assimilate into another group. I always look for young that are in tow and didn’t see any. She was solo. Watched her for about 15 minutes as I got closer for a better shot. Couldn’t have asked for a better situation. Quick death, no tracking, no young ones and no meat was destroyed. Solid harvest. Not the big 10 points like I’ve taken the last 2 years, but solid nonetheless. Meat will be better too.
BeenisHat@reddit
Dropped where she stood. No chasing her through the brush. Blood from the nose and mouth would seemingly tell me this was a solid lung hit.
Good kill man. Probably not a lot of fat on her, but some venison chorizo sounds like a good breakfast burrito to me!
Lots of these guys haven't hunted or don't consider what it is we do when we hunt or fish. You're 100% killing an animal in a violent manner. The only comfort is that we aim to do it as quickly as possible to avoid suffering.
neuromorph@reddit
You realize they don't always travel with their young right?
JoeHardway@reddit
Whilst we should always be strivin for "humane" kills, 9 outta 10 deer surveyed, preferred a less than ideal shot, from almost any caliber, to bein savagely torn apart, by Apex Predators.
Jus sayin!
aeywaka@reddit
Nice rifle, bad kill
BeenisHat@reddit
What was bad about it?
neuromorph@reddit
Agreed
CGShots@reddit (OP)
Ok
livewire98801@reddit
Unpossible!! The AR-15 destroys animals so thoroughly that there's nothing left but some burning hair and shattered burned bones.
Seriously tho, that's a nice setup.
guy48065@reddit
OP has explained the circumstances enough for the high hit. It happens. As for size--who cares. Sometimes you prefer lamb to mutton, veal instead of a steak. I'm a working man... Sometimes you have to settle.
neuromorph@reddit
OP gonna realize that the bisection between guns and hunting will scrutinize him. Just because a gun was used doesn't mean hunters are gonna support this bad take.
Specialist_Ferret292@reddit
What round?
Play_GoodMusic@reddit
The great white hunter strikes again
huh82@reddit
Hunting munties apparently, that would not even be a mature springbok in SA
CGShots@reddit (OP)
She was mature, just looks small from the photo angle as I was on a slope. She was producing milk but was alone. If I had to guess a weight she was probably 120ish.
