Hal_E_Lujah@reddit
I would personally because I saw Gattaca and I don't want my kid not having every advantage possible. I actually imagine it will only be available briefly anyway before it gets made illegal.
SlightlyLazy04@reddit
why would it be made illegal and not just regulated? removing diseases and ailments seems like a complete positive
milmkyway@reddit
Unhealthy people are profitable; a healthy person isn't generating revenue for the medical industry.
Suicide-By-Cop@reddit
The question was, “why not just regulate it?”. Pharmaceutical companies don’t do the regulating, the government does.
Unhealthy people are unproductive workers. Having a healthy population is more profitable for the government, who does the regulating.
AntiProtonBoy@reddit
Perhaps for the medical industry, but on a grander scale, that is not necessarily true. Healthy people are vastly more productive for the economy than unhealthy ones.
El-SkeleBone@reddit

Viicter@reddit
insane. they really think theres a cabal. executives cant even look past short term quarterly earnings for their own company.
the_Teabag@reddit
The medical industry would also sell you designer babies
milmkyway@reddit
100%, but thats a one time payment
holysbit@reddit
The best way is to sell designer babies, who need a monthly shot of whatever to keep their “powers” and the best part is its only a few thousand a month

RandumbStoner@reddit
That’d be a cool show. A population of genetically enhanced people and they’re running low on booster shots for them. All of a sudden athletes are slowing down, scientists are getting dumber, celebs are losing their charisma, racecar drivers are crashing and stuff like that. It’s up to one guy with the shit to make it in his blood to save humanity, but people keep trying to kidnap him to sell it or something. We have to work out the kinks but yea…lol
snizarsnarfsnarf@reddit
Better show:
Scientists have run out of the gene that gives women big boobs
Because of genetic engineering, the natural population has lost the ability to make big boobs
Slowly, the only remaining women with boobs all rise to extreme positions of power, because big boobs
Suddenly a woman with the genes for big boobs appears, and there is now a worldwide manhunt by all the women in power with fake gene big boobs to try and capture the new big boobs lady and harness her genes
The only kink to work out is how we can fit in more shots of big boobs
freezing_circuits@reddit
This is pretty much Manyuu Hikenchou but more sci-fi and less samurai
jzr171@reddit
They'll probably need it too because I can see this leading to some sort of Mega Cancer©️
jmpt16@reddit
You know how antibiotics become less effective if overused and how that could lead to much stronger diseases?
If we engineer humans impervious to our common illnesses, Nature / the Universe will eventually create a disease strong enough to affect these new humans.
God help the "old" ones.
skaersSabody@reddit
Eh, maybe the old ones are immune to the new diseases
ihatemalkoun@reddit
yeah great except that doesnt make sense cause thats not how genes work
UncommittedBow@reddit
Designer babies will grow up to buy their own designer babies, and people are born every day.
jackishere@reddit
Just wait until they make it a subscription cost or else your kid dies
serialstitcher@reddit
hahaha we wish
sealpox@reddit
Subscription-based designer babies with a kill switch embedded into their DNA for when you miss a payment
HalenHawk@reddit
People still break their arms and get in car accidents so it's not like hospitals would just close up shop if diseases go away. That's also a very American take since most of the developed world has socialised health care meaning sick people cost everyone money. Also the economic benefits of healthy people would far outweigh the money to be made by fighting diseases.
theogrant@reddit

Middle class families would take out a $500,000 mortgage to ensure their child is not only fit and healthy, but smart and good looking too.
BathTubBand@reddit
They grow a clone for body parts in a lab! Like in the pornography with ScarJo!
Creepy_Priority_4398@reddit
thats a really good idea, growing healthy tissue from the patient to transplant that wont be rejected. Burn victims, partial liver transplants, bro u just made a great idea by being an autist
BathTubBand@reddit
Bless you. you sweet summer child.
Creepy_Priority_4398@reddit
ok but this time we make the clones braindead, ez
sn4xchan@reddit
Jokes on them I'm unhealthy and they don't make any money from me (I can't afford health care.)
AmperDon@reddit
Yes, but that's only in the US. Literally, all of the modern world excluding the US doesn't generate revenue off the suffering of its citizens.
Oroera@reddit
Unhealthy people are a drain on the economy. Healthier people can work more and be more productive. This argument has never made sense.
Caboose_Juice@reddit
this is a take you’d hear from a 14 year old
GroundedAxiomAndy@reddit
Unhealthy people work less, they drain disability benefits and public healthcare, they need other people to look after them who in turn also work less.
Unhealthy people go out less and in turn spend less money on goods and services.
Standupaddict@reddit
Unhealthy people generate revenue for every other company tho.
Rakhered@reddit
The medical industry doesn't have any pull - the insurance industry does. And insurance would LOVE not paying out on diseases that could be prevented by gene therapy.
The realistic outcome is that we'd see our insurance premiums go up if we didn't choose to have a designer baby.
Mollof@reddit
Then why are there vaccines?
ImCaligulaI@reddit
Unhealthy people aren't going anywhere for generations even if you introduce designer babies. In a system that prioritises short term profits over long term ones, the current people in charge of the medical industry would definitely take the new revenue stream and leave the problem of less revenue from sick people in the following decades to whoever is in charge then, which is not gonna be them.
Able_Caregiver8067@reddit
This is why reddit is a leftwing circlejerk. In the actual world „big pharma“ tries to get people vaccinated for free and fails at that.
RatherGoodDog@reddit
An unhealthy person isn't generating revenue for any other industry if they aren't working.
bigmt99@reddit
For the industry itself yeah, but for any individual company, being the ones who control the market for gene editing would make you so unfathomably rich.
Companies would make more coming up with Covid medication, yet they went all in for an arms race for the vaccine because the prestige, name recognition, and stock value increases made them even more money at the expense of their competitors
Garrais02@reddit
The medical industry doesn't exist in EVERY country.
Brilliant-Mountain57@reddit
Lobbyists aren't going to make the cure for cancer illegal bro, stop smoking crack and get off those tiktok conspiracy theories.
milmkyway@reddit
Actually I get my conspiracy theories from /pol/ and I take meth instead of crack so yeah your opionion has been dismissed sweaty
Brilliant-Mountain57@reddit
Fuck you got me there, nevermind I'm hooked. The reason why the cure to cancer doesn't exist is because everyone who makes one is told nuh-uh before they're allowed to release it your so right.
SweetyWin@reddit
I think people are ready to pay so much to have that advantage that even with regulations there would be a huge black market
airfryerfuntime@reddit
Because people think they're acting on God's will. Same reason stem cell research is illegal in most of the western world.
Equivalent-Most-7333@reddit
What would you define as most, ignoring America for a moment? Even within the most restrictive countries in Europe there are research exceptions for existing cell lines from before restrictions were imposed. Most others have some restrictions but nothing too far past the normal embryonic research limitations
just-slightly-human@reddit
The problem with anything like this is that it’s a very slippery slope to eugenics. Yes, getting rid of diseases is great but then someone in power says all kids must be white and whoops! Genocide
RothIRALadder@reddit
mfw it's racist to cure cancer
Souseisekigun@reddit
It's Western/American brainrot. Everything must be viewed through the lens of race where, of course, white man bad and everything good is evil because it might disproportionately affect minorities.
Will512@reddit
This is past the slippery slope and getting near the bottom already
Deplorable_XX@reddit
It's not that crazy. Natural selection is already in force when it comes to beauty standards. This would just be pushing that into overdrive. It would only take a single generation for their to be a very noticeable visual difference between the poor unmodified kids and the designer made rich kids.
Boredom_fighter12@reddit
Near the bottom? This is basically family guy falling position. When you can genetically engineered babies then that’s it game over there will be huge benefits no doubt but imagine the superiority of the offspring and you cannot in any way deny it and nature dictates the strongest win. So naturally reproduced human will always be below them. Crazy shit
obamasrightteste@reddit
Right but by this reasoning we could never improve anything, ever. Yes, they would be unarguably better. That is the point.
Boredom_fighter12@reddit
I’ll let nature dictates the strength of our species as time passes, I don’t wanna play God.
obamasrightteste@reddit
You're welcome to make that choice
Boredom_fighter12@reddit

UristMcMagma@reddit
How is that genocide? Nobody would be killed or harmed in any way.
PorblemOccifer@reddit
On reddit, genocide is when death.
just-slightly-human@reddit
“The legal term “genocide” refers to certain acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.” while no one is “killed directly” a group of people are wiped out so it’s still a genocide
Tack22@reddit
I mean I’d want kids to all be hairless and bronzed

Camyl96@reddit
It's what comes after solving diseases and genetic disorders. I would say that once designer babies are available and you can customize the phenotype, there will be slow and steady editing out of certain features. Like editing out red hair and freckles or darker skin. In many cultures, it's desirable to have lighter skin, so why wouldn't parents just pick that skin tone before birth? It would be a genetic genocide without any death.
oliham21@reddit
If people are the ones choosing their kids to look that way and it’s done without any violence then what right do we have to say that their doing anything wrong?
ambermage@reddit
Having a population with a uniform immune system is begging for a catastrophic disease.
SokrinTheGaulish@reddit
Also, making it illegal would just mean people would do it in hidden or abroad, it’s abortion all over again, only the rich would be able to…
Oh shit, they’re going to make it illegal aren’t they ?
birbbs@reddit
People don’t like GMO food and we want to do it w humans? I don’t see us messing with genetics in people like this being a very good thing in the end
fugue2005@reddit
you understand the skin color is genetic right?
eugenics is bad for a reason.
give this a read. https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/eugenics
SlightlyLazy04@reddit
I'm not talking about altering ethnicity related genes but about completely stopping certain inheritable diseases
fugue2005@reddit
and you think it ends there?
SlightlyLazy04@reddit
depending on the regulations it can. Iceland has a policy of almost always aborting fetuses with down syndrome and you can hardly call iceland a eugenic dystopia
fugue2005@reddit
aborting fetuses with irregularities is a basic part of eugenics.
aborting the undesirable.
and nothing starts as a dystopia.
and don't try to claim that iceland is also a left wing utopia either. they have elements of a populist radical right in politics.
SlightlyLazy04@reddit
I'm not claiming iceland is a left wing utopia. I'm just claiming it isn't a eugenic dystopia. Also, do you think it's reasonable to think iceland is gonna turn into a eugenic dystopia?
fugue2005@reddit
aborting undesirable fetuses? you think that's where it stops?
the doctor working on this isn't nordic. he's chinese. what do you think the chinese feel about where this technology leads.
SlightlyLazy04@reddit
I'm not saying the chinese have good intentions. I'm saying it isn't necessarily dystopian
DungeonCrawler99@reddit
Plenty of people do. I don't think so but it's not an uncommon stance.
420Wedge@reddit
It won't be. It will only be accessible to the rich, and they will fight to guarantee their bloodlines are are robust as possible, and if history has taught us anything, it's that the rich get what they want.
blueguy211@reddit
big pharma doesnt like that
KJS0ne@reddit
Have you seen Gattaca? This type of eugenics can easily become dystopian.
Belfengraeme@reddit
Well, when you sell temporary fixes, why on earth would you want scientists to put you out of business by helping humanity lmao
PhoenixRemastered@reddit
Bro didn’t get that Gattaca was a cautionary tale 💀
textposts_only@reddit
What was the caution there? C'mon.
People who are made perfect don't end up to be perfect.
Great. What a huge caution.
If there was gene editing right now, I'd do it in a heartbeat for myself. As would and should everyone.
PhoenixRemastered@reddit
The caution is that people who’s genes weren’t edited by choice or more likely due to the inability to access it (due to being poor or living in more remote and/or impoverished areas) will be separated from people who did get their genes edited and will not have the same opportunities. There is already a strong correlation between how rich you are and how "smart" you are, and this would exacerbate the issue. It’s a major bioethics problem for a reason.
tortillazaur@reddit
yeah, but what that guy says is if that literally happens irl there's zero reason to make yourself part of the future "poor" part and not future "gene edited to be smart" part
StuntHacks@reddit
Except, you know, being poor.
PhoenixRemastered@reddit
Yeah but the point of a cautionary tale is to warn against doing it in the first place
tortillazaur@reddit
so? the movie told us that, the world didn't listen. is that a reason to make yourself part of the poor part? if shit already happens, then he, as someone who did watch the movie, knows that the society could possibly split the same way it did in the movie, as such the smart move is to get advantage if you know it happens anyway. I don't see how it being a cautionary tale makes him wrong
Markmyfuckimgworms@reddit
Then what's the difference between this scenario and now? Life won't be any worse for the majority that couldn't it afford it regardless. If anything, more mainstream genetics could give people a better understanding of how inequity and epigenetics works.
JustADelusion@reddit
The difference would be that the elite has not just more wealth but is ACTUALLY smarter, stronger, faster, healthier. People would be born objectively inferior. If we put a price tag on how capable a newborn will be later in life it will create a world with unheard of injustice to the point where unmodified and modified humans are not even considered the same species. Unreal you think it will be like today lol
Markmyfuckimgworms@reddit
Epigenetics and money both mean that the rich are better fed, less diseased, taller, more mentally healthy, more well medicated, and are smarter by favoured education metrics compared to the global poor. How would accelerating this phenomenon have an impact on the global poor?
cadelaser77@reddit
Well I mean if gene editing becomes the norm, one individual won't change that, you do what you can to get by in whatever system there is. So yeah, I probably would too, no point putting my kid at a disadvantage out of some kind of protest
dragonwp@reddit
OP watching the six-fingered pianist: https://i.imgflip.com/43wwpv.jpg?a480912
GhostWalker134@reddit
It won't be an advantage. It will become the new standard, and any one without it is at disadvantage.
andItsGone-Poof@reddit
It's not an advantage, kids should be raised so they have a healthy mind and are comfortable with who they are. Look at all the amazing-looking celebs ... and then look how screwed up life they are living.
Also if everyone can afford it and it's common then it's not an advantage. Just like dudes on juice are not considered the same as natty, the same way designer babies would not be comparable with naturals.
Celebs have it all, yet they still drown their head in powder to escape their depression and anxieties.
Flibbernodgets@reddit
I too saw Gattaca and spent most of the movie thinking "this is neat and all but when is the alien invasion going to happen?" But no, that's Galaga.
TheOneGreyWorm@reddit
Illegal only to the normal people. It will still be done for the ultra rich.

The shamans were from different parts of the world, I believe. It just so happened the Emperor was born in Turkey. And he travels throughout the world taking on multiple roles in different nations throughout history. A true global citizen.
So yes, he could be Chinese, just as he could be African or British. His throne is in the Himalayas iirc.

A: Population collapse is a myth. The planet is overpopulated.
B: How would this solve it were it actually a problem?
mcflymikes@reddit
Population collapse is not a myth, if you stop having kids suddenly as is happening right now in most countries the population will get old pretty fast and there will be nobody to take for them and there will no bodyabled people to work.
All of this followed by a drastic fall in population (as is already happening in Bulgaria and Korea for example)
PaintThinnerSparky@reddit
Once life gets less shitty they can have my babies, meanwhile ill treat the lack of social services for the exorbitant taxes I pay as the suppression field from Half-Life 2
geodesuckmydick@reddit
You’re talking as if humans haven’t been having kids for millennia in far shittier conditions than today. Let’s be honest: if life were better you’d be even less likely to want kids than you do right now. This is a trend you see in literally every country and culture on earth.
BobSacamano47@reddit
The population is literally still rising and you are complaining about a couple of localized population drops. Define doing it little by little.
mcflymikes@reddit
Couple of localized drops? Fertility rate is below 2.1 in all continents except in Africa. Some countries like Spain, Italy, Korea and China fertility rate around 1. That means that their population will drop to half before 2100 if things don't change.
Spanish native population has fallen from 42 million to 37 million this century and their fertility rates keep falling. Chinese population already peaked few year ago and they are going to lose ten million people every year if they continue like this.
BobSacamano47@reddit
Thank God. We need to cap the human population at 1 billion. That's plenty.
Pass_us_the_salt@reddit
Cap yourself and help us get that number down.
BobSacamano47@reddit
Nice try. But I know it would be more efficient to go on a murda spree.
Samthevidg@reddit
Why cap it anywhere? We’re nowhere near overpopulation which would actually be somewhere around 20B
Ridenberg@reddit
Births-to-deaths ratio is dropping in most of civilized world. The only reason countries such as USA don't have a demographic crisis yet is allowing a huge amount of immigrants in, which, while necessary, has its own consequences.
The actual birth rate only grows in places such as the African countries, driving the world average up.

Colonial_bolonial@reddit
Actually if you were to take every human on earth and pack them into a perfect cube with a hydraulic press it would only take up the space of a 391m cube
madtraxmerno@reddit
Well, that depends on how much you compress them.
For example, if you were to compress all 8 billion people in the world into a cube as small as possible, to where the only thing stopping further compression is the literal electrons around each atom repelling each other, the cube would measure roughly 8.24 meters (or 27 feet) on each side, assuming an average human mass of 70 kg.
But if you were to compress the cube even further, exceeding electron degeneracy pressure without exceeding nuclear degeneracy pressure, the resulting cube would measure roughly 1.12 cm (or 0.44 inches) on each side.
And if you somehow managed to compress it even MORE —overcoming both electron and nuclear degeneracy pressure without exceeding quark degeneracy pressure— the resulting cube would measure roughly 1.66 femtometers (or 6.54 × 10⁻¹⁴ inches) on each side. Which is approximately the size of a proton.
Though any further than this and the cube would just collapse into a black hole.

Amazing. The entire comment is bullshit.
A.1 Population collapse is not bullshit, it's one of the most well documented things in the world and is already affecting entire countries. Are you a flat earther by chance?
A. 2 The planet has plenty of space and resources, amazing amounts of them actually. We have practically infinite food and energy. Too bad we are corrupt as shit and can't figure out logistics tho.
B. 1 "How could genetically modifying an organism affect it!???? Preposterous! Lowering infertility? Making pregnancies easier and less damaging? Increasing the chances of twins? Making the babies healthier and smarter so that people may want to have them more. At least making future people more horny? Nooo, no no no. They must have meant that gene modification will just spawn children from the sky, it's totally bullshit.
I can't stand the morons on this site.
esailu@reddit
Automation will solve most issues, people are more productive than ever in the history of humans and it will only get better. One person is doing the job of thousands compared to 100+ years ago.
Population declining is more sustainable. We clearly cannot grow sustainably so population decline is healthy. It will do some economical damage short term, but long term it will be for the greater good.
We are actively ruining the climate, unless you are one of those people who don't believe in climate change. Also the population in most countries is still growing exponentially, it is only issue in developed countries. Most of earth is still not on the same level and their population is growing super fast. Just because few countries have issues doesn't mean we aren't overpopulated to fuck.
Also south Korea is one of the most densely populated countries on earth. Some short term pain, but long term it will be better for humanity overall.
Regarding genetically modifying, technically we already do this. IFV etc., we can selectively choose healthy embryos/sperm and also at the start of pregnancy most western countries do screening for most birth defects and you can still abort.
"Disability-selective abortion". We already have tons of abortions for mental/physical defects which is pretty much selectively "gene modifying", since we are aborting the ones with disabilities and genetical conditions. Aborting embryos with down syndrome etc.
FeeblyBee@reddit
Just because you could theoretically mine the entire planet to produce a gorillion of your funko pops doesn't mean you can without consequences, regard. We're only currently going through the 6th Mass Extinction Event as well as catastrophic climate change and a gargantuan reshuffling of the entire ecosystem, while we barely tapped 0.0001% of all the iron and other resources the Earth has. This was always such a bullshit argument
The_Olden_One@reddit
Exactly, this sounds like greed and corruption.
We could have 10 billion more people and resources to spare if we had better systems involved.
FeeblyBee@reddit
No, we couldn't. This is a feel-good leftist fantasy that if only we killed all the rich pigs and distributed all the resources evenly we could live in a happy green utopia with all the animals not minding that 90% of their environment was turned into rice fields and dense urban cities :) . A simple problem, easy to pin on a few people or one system, simple solution, very attractive for simpletons
Do you know what the human population was when the mammoths were driven to extinction? It was around 15 million. Do you know how many aborigines it took to exterminate 90% of the Australian megafauna? A couple thousand, 50 thousand years ago. No factories, just spear chuckers.
Do you think so many fish species are threatened with extinction because some capitalist is hoarding all the fish? No, they're fucking eaten, by too many fucking people. And guess what, the biggest polluters are people in 1st world countries who need like a hundredfold more resources and energy than some 3rd world Somalian in a mud hut. But even a handful of primitive people can overtax the environment and over exploit resources. Happened on the Easter Islands, pre-Bronze age people caused a social collapse because they cut down all the fucking trees on their island.
Even if all 8 billion people lived like savages we'd be fucked. I'm guessing you want everyone to have a high standard of living? And you somehow think we can handle double that on top? Good luck, maybe with some magic technology which I can't fathom, that can summon shit out of thin air and turn pollution into gold bricks
The_Olden_One@reddit
I'm an authoritarian conservatist who believes capitalism is flawed but there is no better alternative currently.
You shat out 4 monoliths of text assuming I want people to live rurally, which would (of course) destroy the planet even with our current population.
We absolutely can have 10 billion more people. We'd have to invest in lab grown plants, vertical agriculture, nuclear power and water purification more. And we'd have to invest a lot in mining resources more than we do now, but in ways that are much less efficient but more environmentally friendly.
Which of course would upset our corporate overlords. But saying that's not possible is just bullshit.
FeeblyBee@reddit
I specifically said, in my second sentence, that your fantasy includes dense urban cities. Obviously most people don't need to live on farms as most people don't work in agriculture. The problem is with the quantity of food and land needed to feed that many people
Bullshit. You're basing this claim on what, technology that doesn't exist? I exemplified how it took tens/hundreds of thousands of primitive people at most to drive dozens if not hundreds of species of large animals into extinction in Australia, and the Americas as well for that matter. We can't sustain our current population of 8 billion. Even when most of that 8 billion is living generally in poverty with low environmental impact (as compared to 1st worlders). Imagine if everyone consumed as much as the average american, and then double that for your 20 billion world. We're already fucked, and we'd be quadruple fucked in that scenario
Never said it's not possible, I said I can't fathom the technology that could rise to that challenge. And neither can you, as you're basing your thesis on a hail mary in the form of technology that doesn't exist saving our asses in the future. How do you know vertical agriculture can realistically feed 20 billion people? How much space will it save? How do you know it will be cost effective? What should we do about the omnipresent microplastics? How do we deal with excess greenhouse gasses? Even if we stop 100% fossil fuel consumption now an go completely nuclear, global warming will continue for several centuries because of the positive feedback loop. What do you do about the billions of people who do not care and live in countries for which the environment is not a concern and don't want to cooperate with democracies? There are libraries about these issues, it's not as simple as "greedy corporations". This issue is foundational to the human species

Overpopulated as in we are destroying the climate and it is escalating at record speed. We are not developing sustainably at all.

I find it hard to believe earth is not overpopulated when humans + livestock are 96% of world mammal biomass. It’s criminal how much wilderness we’ve destroyed. All the estimates saying “earth can support 50 billion people blah blah blah” are incredibly overgenerous. Even ignoring every other problem, our carbon emissions are obliterating the global balance of climate and it’s looking dubious we’ll be able to reduce them enough.
Ecosystems are resilient until they’re not. Just look at what happened to Atlantic cod stock. The stock was fine for centuries until all of a sudden it wasn’t, and collapsed by more than 99% over just a few years. Cascading failures like this will keep happening.
Pineapple_Spenstar@reddit

Mahajangasuchus@reddit
Actually it does, I’m 100% correct about all things. Fact!
undreamedgore@reddit
A: It's not a myth, and it's not overpopulated. We need to continue to grow to progress.
B: makes hornier people.
health_throwaway195@reddit
Why do we "need" to continue to grow to progress (vague).
undreamedgore@reddit
Several things: More workers to produce more goods More thinkers to design more machines More thinkers to maintain current infrastructure More workers to maintain current infrastructure More workers to care for the eldarly More thinkers to over see the operations
And so on. Population decline creates a top heavy system where we find ourselves unable to support certain operations. It takes a lot of people to keep things running so efficently.
health_throwaway195@reddit
I wouldn't call infrastructure maintenance and the production of an excess amount of garbage "progress." I never suggested the elderly aren't a resource drain, but to suggest we need to exponentially increase our population in order to progress as a species is bullshit, in my opinion. Of anything, it will encourage tech advancement since there will be every effort made to try to avoid allowing the elderly to be more burdensome. There already have been massive advancements that will be of great use for elder care institutions.
undreamedgore@reddit
If you don't maintain infrastructure you'll find yourself falling pretty quick. It's not progress on it's own, but key to progress. As for production, the fact you just think it's garbage shows your ignorance on the topic. It's tools, cloths, housing, food, and everything else. Yes, we need less people doing that than before, but we still need more population to continue improving that.
Don't handwave tech advancement. It is incredibly reasource heavy and often reliant on sheer numbers to keep moving at a decent pace.
Declining population limits our ability to grow our economy, technological advancement, compeativness with other countries, and cultrual influence.
health_throwaway195@reddit
Many aspects of infrastructure would be able to be downsized pretty quickly with a shrinking and aging population. And yes, lots of valuable stuff is produced, but so is tons of cheaply made crap that people use for a minute, then throw away.
With advancements in AI, much smaller teams will be necessary for development. It's already been shown to drastically cut time and manpower requirements.
undreamedgore@reddit
First, I work in tech. I'm an electrical engineer. I wouldn't trust AI with a lot of my job.
Second, or we could inprove more to maintain economic growth. What you're proposing would effectivly turn our who industries inward to survive.
Thrid, the cheeply made crap is designed and expected to be used for a breif period. Not everything needs to last for ever and be past down for generations.
health_throwaway195@reddit
It's not about trusting AI to make decisions entirely. It's a tool that speeds up a lot of drudge work. Final decisions are still made by humans. And it's not as though it isn't a rapidly advancing technology.
"Economic growth" lol.
And you missed the part where I said that much of what we buy is incredibly superfluous. Additionally, much is intentionally built not to last.
undreamedgore@reddit
There's not thag terribly much AI safe drudge work. You wouldn't want an AI writing or testing saftey critical code afterall. As for economic growth, why lol? We both know bodies are the core of that.
As for the last points, sure people buy a lot of suoerfluous stuff, why shouldn't they? Why livr like acestic monks? And building to last is a lot harder and more expensive than you'd think. Time/ cost wise it's often not worth it.
health_throwaway195@reddit
You're wrong. There's plenty.
Tech advancements that increase productivity per person are at least as valuable as a high population, especially if you want the population at large to actually reap the benefits of economic growth.
There's a vast chasm between being an ascetic and buying a bunch of stupid bullshit that you don't need or that breaks in like a year. Even just the shitty, cheap clothes that are so popular these days are a ridiculous waste of resources to produce.
Maelorus@reddit
Because in nature you need to run just to stay at the same place and because more stuff (people, information, production) is axiomatically good.
health_throwaway195@reddit
I'm curious about your axioms. Is 2 billion unhappy people more good than 1 billion happy people? Purely a hypothetical.
Maelorus@reddit
It's assuming a stable distribution of "happiness" in a population of any size, in your example it wouldn't be better, but it's not a realistic model of a human population so it's moot.
And besides, it is progress and growth specifically that drastically increases the proportion of "happy" people, while simultaneously increasing the total population.
And lastly, natural population growth should stabilize at a new, higher, equilibrium after the entire global population reached a high standard of living. The fact that this isn't happening and birth rates are plummeting in developed countries and exploding in developing countries is a civilization-threatening problem people are right to focus on.
health_throwaway195@reddit
Tell that to the survivors of bouts of the bubonic plague, who were healthier, and likely happier, by far. Assuming that the distribution of happiness would be the same at any population size is ludicrous.
So you agree that population size is not necessarily directly causatively associated with higher standards of living?
I don't know why you would assume that. High population density lowers mating effort in a variety of studied species.

I'm not a scientist, but I'm pretty sure you can't tinker with specific genes without having some unforeseen side-effects. Okay, your kid is now taller, faster, and stronger - but is his heart able to accommodate the increased demand in blood flow? Is your bone density appropriately increased? What if some negative side-effects appear during the activation of these genes, eg. kid becomes prone to sickle-cell disease, lactose intolerant, autistic, or, even worse, a Brony?
Scorkami@reddit
Imagine you have an athlete son but, without taking any meds or supplements he still gets roid rage and consumes 5 chickens per meal
Emorez@reddit
So, the average American?
NoSoundNoFury@reddit
Yeah, can you even get more human growth in any direction without messing with the hormones? I dunno, man, this seems to be pretty uncharted territory.
Scorkami@reddit
So there is ALREADY a problem that tall people have, which is that, for example, the femur bone which sits in the thigh breaks easier because while the length of most humans has increased, thickness hasnt.
Similarly, you cant exactly just "make a human beefier" without also figuring out how that happens. Is he just naturally producing more testosterone? Well that increases likelyhood of balding and rage. Is the body just deciding to build muscle? Well that takes calories, which means hes gonna eat more than a standard serving (which also begs the question, is it worth to have humans that can bench an elephant, when you also have to send them everywhere with 2kg of protein sludge just so they can get through 5 hours of work
Matt_2504@reddit
Testosterone doesn’t cause rage and only causes balding to those genetically prone to it, which you could just edit out. Increasing natural production somewhat would simply improve the life of the child, as long as you don’t go to levels that aren’t possible naturally. You simply select genes that already exist but are rare and give optimal production rather than creating some new gene giving your kid 10x the production
NoSoundNoFury@reddit
But I want my kid to shoot laser beams from his eyes!!!
TheSereneDoge@reddit
Homie testosterone does cause rage in high doses. It literally can cloud your perception of the world. Heightening this will have some effect, no matter how small the dose.
KingPhilipIII@reddit
Honestly depending on how advanced the science gets, it’s important to remember that while still incredibly complex, evolution was always a product of “whatever works” for any given situation.
If we can actually engineer supersoldiers, we will likely be able to make their bodies more energy efficient so they don’t need their protein sludge at all hours of the day.
Izukage@reddit
I’m not a scientist, but how the fuck is your edit any different from “We paid a lot of money for your school, soccer team, piano lessons, tutors, nutritional food, doctors appointments, daycare, social activities in order to design your mental and physical capabilities according to our will.”
“Stop smoking and eating chicken tendies!” So let me get this straight, you want parents to encourage their children to make poor health decisions?
NoSoundNoFury@reddit
Fair point. I think that fostering talent through parental supervision & guidance is something different than designing human capabilities like a machine. "I taught you" vs. "I created you." When being taught to do something well, the child still has some agency.
I think there is a spectrum between living the ascetic life of a professional athlete and outirght self-destructive food & drug consumption. And yeah, a certain and moderate amount of conscious choice for comfort food over health food etc. is acceptable if you're not a pro athlete. My kids shall get a wide variety of foods, including a moderate amount of sweets, instead of food measured and adjusted for optimal micronutrient intake.
HateIsEarned00@reddit
As of now, we don't have the information to create such specific changes. The best we have right now is editing one specific gene in one specific location to create one very specific change. A good example of this is sickle cell anemia. One specific gene is broken that causes their red blood cells to fold incorrectly. If we change three nucleotides in the DNA from XYZ to ZYX (I forgot the specific base pairs sue me) then they are fine. It's early days but we are trying to engineer viruses to do this for us and I believe we've had a couple of runs that are successful.
Changing height? IQ? There is no height gene. There is no IQ gene. These are multi factorial. It's also complicated because 97% of human DNA appears to do nothing. Appears.
The HIV thing is believable because HIV specifically targets the CCR5 / CCR4 on CD4+ T cells. If you could mutate those receptors, I'd believe it would render the virus useless. There's a population of aboriginals in Australia that are 100% immune to HIV for this exact reason. Some of the earliest drugs we used against HIV, Enfuvirtide and Maraviroc, blocked these exact receptors to stop the spread of the virus.
TBH, the future of this is AI. If we can plug billions of genomes into a computer, it'll be able to (hypothetically) identify what genes are actually causing what results in what. Then we get WH 40K >:)
NoSoundNoFury@reddit
You seemt o know more about this than I do, but I thought that targeted gene editing in animals is already a thing? I know that things like Belgium Blue Bulls are created by breeding, but it seems that the relevant genes are sufficiently identified. I wouldn't be surprised if we could use gene therapy on humans in a similar way.
UpboatOrNoBoat@reddit
That’s the basis of most gene therapies that exist currently. The issue is like the above user said, most traits are multifactored and absolutely not due to a single or even a few genes. Most physical traits are a complex interaction between dozens of gene pathways.
rateater78599@reddit
Germline gene editing wouldn’t have that problem, since it would be done to an embryo. Unfortunately research on it is illegal.
UpboatOrNoBoat@reddit
Oh yeah definitely, that’s the real benefit to doing it early. We have this pesky thing called informed consent that’s required for clinical testing and that’s hard to get from a clump of undifferentiated cells.
rateater78599@reddit
Fair point but I think eventually people will find a way to justify it. The eventual benefits of this will probably outweigh most people’s morality
ihatemalkoun@reddit
this is prescisely why im back in school because i think that having a degree in ai will put me at the forefront when my company inevitably gets into gene editing.
tbh ill probably be fired by then tho.
King_Regastus@reddit
Genetics student here. You are absolutely correct. Genetics research is nothing beyond fucking around and finding out. You first identify the gene, and then deactivate, remove or replace it. Then you look at what happens. There are so many factors that come into play that it is incredibly difficult to be sure of what you find is the truth. It's not even limited to the expression of the gene itself either, a gene can affect another through many ways. Things like bone density or blood flow aren't even up there for things that can go wrong.
We do have a good understanding of some things, like sickle cell disease. Change in a single amino acid in hemoglobin, which can be caused by a change in a single base in the dna causes the whole cascade. Yet, the best we can do is to test the parents if they carry a risk.
With the science we have today, I call this bullshit. There are a bajillion factors that determine how tall you will be, both internal and external. We have been experimenting on mice for decades and yet 3 independent attempts reach different redults when they try the same thing. Unless they come with multiple independent experiments on thousands of humans across multiple generations, which is obviously not going to happen anytime soon, I won't trust it.
BobDylansBasterdSon@reddit
Most of the stuff they can edit out is related to cancer and other genetic diseases. Increased muscle mass is definitely possible, at the cost of a higher nutrient intake. Intelligence and looks are much harder. Especially the look of someones face is extremely complex. Tbh most of the stuff people attribute to genetics is actually epi-genetic, which can't be edited as easily.
Ck_shock@reddit
I feel like this would become heavily regulated were only certain things would allow to be edited. Otherwise it would get out of control rather quick

Every 10 years people rediscover that genetics exists and then they inevitably think they’re the first to think of eugenics. You can’t actually make your baby smarter with gene editing just like the nazis didn’t make the aryan race superior. Intelligence is subjective and changes based on what forms of cognitive prowess are being tested.
textposts_only@reddit
Of course the Nazis didn't make the Aryans superior. That was flawed from the beginning. There wasn't enough science behind it. It was pure ideology
What we do know though is that there are people / groups that are in fact remarkable. Ironically enough : Ashkenazi Jews. Take a look at this wiki quite:
And if you do not deny evolution you should know that intelligence is an evolved trait that established itself through countless generations.
If you leave ethics aside (and this is a big one - ethically one of the worse things) you could definitely breed for intelligence.
But we are human. More sentimental than logical. Thank God. Otherwise we wouldn't care for the disabled or the mentally ill. We would kill babies with genetic defects. We would castrate those with genetic defects at best and cull them at worst.
Edogmad@reddit
Then explain what genes are responsible for intelligence. Go on I’ll wait
textposts_only@reddit
With that question definitely not one that you seem to be having.
Can you show me on the doll where I talked about a single intelligence gene??
And when you're at it. Can you tell me why some dog breeds are smarter than others
Edogmad@reddit
If you can't identify even the basic genetic premise of heritable intelligence then you can't effectively edit for it. Breeding two people with high IQs together may produce offspring with a higher IQ but without understanding why it's a shot in the dark. This kind of blind trial-and-error works well for making dogs that look and act one very specific way but doesn't actually make people more "intelligent" like you're claiming. That's because my original point that IQ is an attempt at an objective measure of a subjective ability. Some people are better at functional tasks involving memory and others at reasoning. Both of these things contribute to our understanding of intelligence but are rooted in infinitely complex genetic pathways. You're essentially trying to overlap two plinko boards to get the ball into the cup that you want, but everybody sees the cup in a different place.
All ethics aside, you might be able to selectively breed individuals for one specific marker of intelligence (IQ), but doing so would likely make them more unfit in other aspects of life and wouldn't necessarily make more "intelligent" individuals as this is a subjective measure.

Probably Gattaca if this is openly distributed (as we are seeing here), probably Red Rising if a fashie group gets their hands on it.

I hope no one actually believes that's going to be the actual price. If they really manage to make something like that work, they can charge ANYTHING they want.
If they're really allowed to keep this privatized, well that's it for anyone who isn't rich. If anything can carve the social hierarchy to stone, it's the ability for the rich to make their kids more talented than anyone else's. There's never going to be a reasonable chance for your kids to make it if you can't afford their therapy.
Subpar_diabetic@reddit
Gattaca was a precautionary warning. Not a damn checklist
Danat_shepard@reddit
To be fair, their society worked quite well, and people giving birth to "defected" babies was their choice. The main hero wouldn't even pass the health test to become an astronaut at current NASA either.
Shrekquille_Oneal@reddit
The real message of the movie is that religion is increasingly incompatible with modern society and serves only to harm those whom it claims to help. The main character's parents had every opportunity to allow their son to have an objectively better life, even if you ignore their society's unequal treatment of unmodified people, and they just said, "nah. The Bible doesn't even mention genetic engineering, but we think it'd make God mad anyway."
Then, when their kids came out all fucked up, they caved and engineered the second one into a stereotypical Chad, proving their religion is completely irrational or at the very least God didn't give a shit about genetic engineering in the first place.
/🤓
Danat_shepard@reddit
Huh, that's a good one. Kinda reminds me of the whole vaccine debacle and how quickly God got involved in there, so it's not that far off the reality.
StarSpliter@reddit
Honestly, the movie was more of a thought experiment than a precautionary tale. If anything, it was a tale of "hard work pays off" since, despite his asthma and 0 genetic cognitive advantage, he worked his ass off to out compete those who were born "perfect"

sonofaratdog@reddit
OK I'm kinda fucked up right now but hear me out. Most people here seem to mention shit about how collapse is coming because there are too many elderly people and not enough kids bring made to support all the infrastructure and them. So to fix this we implement a new system that has benefits for all parties involved.
To start off if you choose not to reproduce at all, which is a perfectly fine choice, then at age 50 we take you out behind the government barn and put you down old yeller style. No exceptions. And since you know you only have to 50 until it's time to die, you can work for a much shorter time and go nuts with your money instead of saving for old age. Not a bad deal, work for a maybe 10-15 years or so and then blow it all on hookers and crack for the last ones.
Now for people who have kids: every kid you produce gets you 10 more years added to the original 50. Caps out a 4 kids and at that point they just let you die when you die. Each kid you have also gets you free Healthcare shit from the government that improves based on your current kid count. 1 kid is the bronze tier and covers the basics, 4 kids is platinum or diamond or some shit where you can just do whatever you want so long as it's medically available. Get a catscan every day because you like the way the radiation feels, you name a pill you want and it's yours fucking whatever the government will cover you.
It's a rough draft and shit but idk I think it would be pretty sweet. I'd stop working like today and just get obliterated daily if I knew I was done at 50. Biggest flaw I see so far is that the usual government corruption and rich people bypassing the rules but that's a fraction of a percent of the population and wouldn't matter much if the goal is fixing overpopulation. Im gonna blast off on some more Adderall and see what else I can add but fuck idk how to end shit ever and that's why I never post much on reddit and I write dumb shit like this then just delete it all but fuck you I'm posting it now autism be damned. Good night.

sounds like a good investment, clearly if you do it once you're set for generations
OK_Maybe_686@reddit
And lose the chance to financially exploit the following generations? You are so naive. Pharmaceutical companies would make the genetically modified babies sterile.
Filibut@reddit
that still means losing customers, they would secretly make them prone to getting expensive diseases at best. the most successful viruses adapt to being less lethal to have more spreading potential
OK_Maybe_686@reddit
If they profit more from making superbabies sterile than ferti they'll just do it.
People accept ads on expensive, monthly paid services and ultra-procesed, high-sugar foods LOL what's making my kid sterile if that means becoming part of the superhuman elite? Wake up, people are sheep and eager to be have shit thrown at their face.

Medium scenario is that messing with the genes before birth sorta works, but also messes something else up and babies get turbo-cancer.

It most likely will. And his original experiment only used disease resistance as a cover. The gene that was edited also impacts cognitive traits.

Stupid question that none of us are qualified to answer:
If the genes get edited, don’t their offspring would have the same modification?
Also, from another point of view, people will be killing their lineage
King_Regastus@reddit
There was a post in a sci-fi writing prompt subreddit.
It told about a time where genetic modifications allowed every child to be healthy and in peak form, so that wealthy people would purposefully have children with disabilities to show off how they had the resources to look after them in a world where everyone was perfect.
Honestly one of the most unique ideas I've ever seen.

skaersSabody@reddit
This stuff (should it be possible without horrendous side effects) will be the great ethical question in the next few decades
How much should you tamper with a baby to guarantee it has a happy life? Just make it disease resistant? Or should you also try to increase some physical traits? What about looks? Hair/eye color? Skin color? Should short-sightedness be removed, despite it not being considered a disability in 99% of cases?
What do you do about genetic disorders that affect the brain? Sure, you can guarantee your baby doesn't have down's syndrome, great. But should you also remove any form of neurodivergence? Hell, what even would be a standard, "healthy" brain pattern? Could that be used to guarantee that people with gender dysphoria are born in their preferred sex already? Would that count as a genocide towards "binary trans people"? Would that even be a bad thing considering it might remove a source of pain?
There are some interesting questions to be asked here.
I have no faith that I'll like the answers society reaches

You want inequality to not only skyrocket, but to become even more cemented than it is now?
Because this is how you get inequality to not only skyrocket, but to become even more cemented than it is now.
CommodoreSalad@reddit
The alternative is a future race that can't keep up with the developing super bugs and illnesses that are being caused by our overuse and misuse of antibiotic medication.
It could be necessary to engineer a better human who is more resistant to combat that.
Also, inequality can be regulated with societal law. We already have the difference between someone who never works out and an Olympic athlete, and both have the same rights.
Without_Ambition@reddit
There's a huge difference between therapeutic and elective, enhancement-oriented genetic modification, as well as between somatic and germ-line genetic modification. Therapeutic genetic modification holds great promises, for example in relation to the threats you point to. Enhancement-oriented genetic engineering, especially if performed on germ-line cells, is extremely dangerous.
And yes, inequality can be addressed with various legal and policy interventions. But it's one of the most intractable problems of human society, and one that even the most supposedly enlightened democracies struggle to combat—resulting in the rising inequality we've seen in the Western world over the past decades, for example. And inequality would become much worse if access to genetic engineering for the purpose of enhancement were to become accessible only those with power or money, or if they had access to better genetic engineering than the "lower" classes. It would do that not only because they'd be able to add to the already enormous advantages they and their children already have because of their economic and social privileges, but also minimize one of the few things that intergenerationally destabilize those privileges and allow member of lower group to achieve social mobility upwards—the fact that the vagaries of natural sexual reproduction means that even the most "fit" parents sometimes produce "unfit" children and the most "unfit" parents sometimes produce "fit" children.

Dr. He Jiankui was the first person known to successfully genetically modify humans. He had some success in adults prior, but never fully cured AIDS caused by HIV.
It was in 2018, and discovered he did it 2019 (I believe). So not quite a decade ago.
It was two embryos that he modified, and the children were later born, free of AIDS. At the time, it was incredibly controversial. Both his Chinese peers and the medical/gene community at large condemned his project. It was later found his project was entirely self-funded. More research needed to be done before moving forward with potentially disastrous consequences.
This is not someone we should be taking seriously. He's more akin to a mad scientist than an ethical researcher. Additionally, I'm not sure when he ever said anything other than curing genetic diseases.

Pure physical prowess did not make us the "dominant species". There are loads of animals that are faster, stronger, faster, more aggressive etc. than us.
Intelligence is only partly due to genetics - having access to information and other people is what makes us successful. You need cooperation and money AS WELL as intelligence to be successful.
The global population is falling because of increasing wealth inequality and global issues (war, climate change etc.). Gene editing can't fix that.
And even if you could, you shouldn't: 8 billion humans is enough. The post-WWII baby boom was an anomaly.
THEPIGWHODIDIT@reddit

Ah yes. Genetetic engineering on this scale can only benefit humanity, for a mere couple grand!
For now. Until the price begins to skyrocket as demand outstrips supply. Then it'll only be the wealthy elite who'll have access, with crumbs leftover for the peasantry.
"But but we can enact regulati" stfu no we can't. We can't even stop the rich dicks from poaching, enforcing slavery or attacking children.
