What would happen if 1980's Sam was dropped into 2024?

neocons would say he would be cancelled by the woke mob.. they forget the man was a preacher that abandoned his vows to be a filthy loud mouthed comedian, i say he'd be woker than a gallon of pitch black coffee.
RunningPirate@reddit
He wouldn’t have been successful. Comedy is contextual to its time. I loved Sammy in the 80’s but I think some of his schtick wouldn’t be funny, now.
Quasigriz_@reddit
Kind of how Dice is no longer a thing, or Dane Cook dropped off. They are products of their time. I feel that Bill Burr will eventually fall into this category as well.
FirstChurchOfBrutus@reddit
That’s really not fair. I didn’t think Dane Cook was funny back then, either.
FineAunts@reddit
The frat boy humor never did it for me.
"What if you stood in line at the bank and just randomly yelled out 'Eeeeeeee!'" "Here's the sound of a car turning in a parking garage- Errrrrhh Errrrrhh!!'"
How people paid money for his brain dead standup is insane.
FirstChurchOfBrutus@reddit
Ah, good. My people are here.
PIK_Toggle@reddit
Dane Cook became rich and plays video games all day.
Why continue to live on the road and take shit from people when you don't need to?
Ambassadormatory@reddit
Shit, I’m poor and unemployed and I play video games all day. Ain’t gotta be rich.
3-orange-whips@reddit
Hell, look at my cousin.
ScienceWasLove@reddit
He’s broke and don’t do shit.

Yikes - his half-brother. No doubt the holidays are awkward at the Cook household.
TheDeadlySpaceman@reddit
Yeah it gets real old being told by other comedians you’re stealing their act, once you’ve got that bank why bother?
PIK_Toggle@reddit
Eh, that is a bit overblown.

mandmranch@reddit
He is fiming a movie in Kansas City. He is also a groomer.
Western-King5865@reddit
I loved Kinison. He was intelligent, interesting, and charismatic. Those who think he just screamed or that he was Dice-like weren’t paying attention. Y’all missed the forest for the trees.
frankduxvandamme@reddit
Yeah, I feel like burr is already slipping. His SNL hosting was rough. And his last streaming special was his weakest special by far
ChrisBenoitDaycare69@reddit
The SNL audience is not Burrs audience. I wouldn't even call them comedy fans.
RedRatedRat@reddit
An SNL audience wants humor that makes fun of others, not them. And Burr still got laughs.
He should’ve gone Philadelphia on those woke scolds.
black-kramer@reddit
‘already’ — he’s been at it for 30 years and has been in the elite league of standups for about 15. I think the issue is that he’s spreading himself very thin by doing too much. too many movies, shows, podcasts etc. and I’m not sure if he’s doing a special a year anymore, but that’s an insane thing to attempt. if you go back and listen to say, carlin, he repeated a lot of material and themes and his specials didn’t come out with that sort of regularity.
the media environment is part of the problem.
gyalchen_beat@reddit
It’s hard to compare burr to Carlin. Burr’s in a position where he can do all sorts of things in addition to stand up. Carlin acted once in a while but spent most of his career on the road with occasional specials thrown in. I bet if Carlin were around today you’d see him in a lot of different things.
JjakClarity@reddit
Yeah he lost me in the monologue with his “feminists are ugly” joke. Stupid.
BlueProcess@reddit
Bill got popular by saying what others were afraid to. The more success he has the more he has to lose and the more strength it's going to take to keep on saying what he thinks. So that's feedback loop the first.
The other loop he is in, is that his opinion is changing other people's opinion. So as his opinions become accepted and acceptable he will seem less edgy because he moves the needle. Some people would react by getting edgier, which I think is a mistake because it's disingenuous, other would spend some time in introspective contemplation considering new angles, dynamics, and interactions for material. To me, that is the way.
The third loop that he is in, is the celebrity loop. As he becomes more famous he stops having the common person's experience. You see this all the time. The canary in the coal mine is when a comedian starts joking about the airline experience. Because that's what their life is now. So he will need to decide if he wants to try to pull back a little and ground himself or go all in and start ripping on the celebrity lifestyle. Option two burns a lot of bridges and exposes you to people seeking revenge. Option 1 would also be better for mental health.
That is all.
abusamra82@reddit
Genuine question as I am not familiar, what has Bill Burr done that is so edgy in the context of standup comedy?
dingatremel@reddit
Very well put
FredFled@reddit
It was interesting to me. He had to comment on what was going on and he had a live audience that wasn’t necessarily accommodating to his material. I respect the high wire act he was taking on.
thermos15@reddit
Damn, glad you said this, as much as I loved Bill Burr years back, I feel his angles/observations haven't grown much. Bill has been on the peripheral of MAGAts, he will likely go full on Maggot because you can't skirt "both-sides suck" ism's forever. As Bob Dylan said once, You Gotta Serve Somebody.
Kyokono1896@reddit
Bill isn't political. Contrary to what you may think, there's plenty who don't give a fuck.
thatgenxguy78666@reddit
I agree.
dingatremel@reddit
He is trying to ride both sides of the fence, which to some extent is what he’s been doing since he had hair. But he’s trying too hard and losing his balance.
I think Burr is very astute in his social commentary. He knows what’s right and wrong, and he knows what’s smart and dumb, but he can’t bear to be seen as insufferable or self righteous. So he ends up throwing unnecessarily cynical and mean spirited commentary into his comedy, which is a shame. All so that he can play the smart ass rather than the social commenter.
He honestly had the bones of a good SNL monologue, but he torpedoed it all on his own.
thatgenxguy78666@reddit
I disagree.
Markprzyb@reddit
Do you think the Lovely Niaaaaahhhhh would allow Bill to become MAGAt?

Dice is huge.
martlet1@reddit
I saw dice last year. He killed with new material.
Fancy_Art_6383@reddit
Comedians can keep evolving for a long time though.
The_Vee_@reddit
Dice was difficult to like back then. He was hella abrasive.
stupid_pun@reddit
I think Burr will become like Carlin, ageless. His older material still holds up and his talk on political and social issues is surprisingly rational and nuanced, even if he presents it in a wacky way, lol.
BKtoDuval@reddit
It's wild but I couldn't believe Dice is performing in a theater near me soon. I kinda wanna go for the nostalgia, to see how some of the jokes would be received today.
hotdoginathermos@reddit
I think Dice does birthday parties at the Chuck-E-Cheese now.
gyalchen_beat@reddit
That’s why Bill moved into acting
eoecho@reddit
The best ones adapt. Some comics you could put onstage in any time period and they'd be funny.
Due-Dentist9986@reddit
BIll Burr's been doing standup for 3 decades..... not comparable at all
Fired4StealinBoxes@reddit
This is 100% true. My gf(51F) and I(35M) were watching a Tom Segura special and she wanted to show me Dice afterwards and claimed he was hilarious. About 5 minutes in she said he’s not as funny as she remembered lol.
Quasigriz_@reddit
He was really funny, when I was a Junior in 1991. I listened to Eddie Murphy - Delirious back in 5 th grade, or so, but I wouldn’t let me kids listen to it now. I did take my 9 and 13 year old to see Jim Gaffigan. It’s the first comedian they’ve seen live. Now I just need to find them some old Gallagher specials; and maybe Dorf on Golf.
I saw that Pete’s Dragon was on Disney Plus, and got my kids to watch it. I had forgotten the horrible premise in the beginning.
Fired4StealinBoxes@reddit
I feel that. Tried to watch Rugrats with my 7 year old nephew and just couldn’t see how I ever found it to be even remotely entertaining. My nephew was bored to death lol.
systemfrown@reddit
Dice is no longer a thing and that “thing” was never really very funny in the first place.
Ok-Potato-4774@reddit
Yeah, I think like the hair metal era, he would've faded out of the limelight if he had never been in that car accident. He would probably still be touring in the nostalgia circuit with Motley Crue and Poison. Naw, even if he'd have lived, he'd be dead by now.
p00ki3l0uh00@reddit
Andrew Dice Fucking Clay. Put some respect on that name please. Dane Cook? I think he took my taco bell order yesterday.
Blue-cheese-dressing@reddit
Andrew Dice Clay’s Instagram is absolutely hilarious. It’s subtle cringe social comedy that plays on awkward random interactions with everyday people. Thanks to Segura regularly talking about how funny his new stuff is more people are seeing it.
He certainly changed with the times- it’s 180 degrees from “the Diceman” I imagine Sam K would have adapted to the scene as well.
RainbowButtMonkey1@reddit
Yes but Dice and Kinnison were very gimmicky and their act quickly got dated. Some of Bill's jokes might be dated in the future but I think he'll age less than comedians like Dice and Kinnison
The_Dude_2U@reddit
Bill Burr is my inner monologue.
ShowMeYourHappyTrail@reddit
I feel the same way about Eddie Griffin and Katt Williams too. Their first couple of specials were hilarious and now they just stand up there and complain about everything for an hour.
MonkeyKingCoffee@reddit
I saw Dice at a show years after he peaked.
He was trying out new material and the audience wasn't having it. Finally he got a "what the fuck have I done with my life" look on this face and rattled through his nursery rhymes.
natedogjulian@reddit
Already has
Nutsack_Adams@reddit
He wasn’t funny then either. For some reason in the 80s you could just be super high on coke and yell a lot and people thought it was funny. See bobcat goldthwait too
justmisspellit@reddit
I saw Bobcat’s comedy special back in the 80s and he did his schtick for a couple minutes, then talked about how that’s all that’s wanted from him. He then proceeded to do a great, funny (normal) routine. And he’s still going strong today
Nutsack_Adams@reddit
I fucking loved bobcat. Not sure why I loved his shtick. Totally inexplicable
valis010@reddit
He makes cool movies, too. Willow Creek was a solid found footage horror movie

AMGRN@reddit
His 80’s Bono impression was dead fucking on, and I say this without hyperbole.
GogglesPisano@reddit
I’m also fascinated by the fact that Bobcat Goldthwait’s childhood best friend (Tom Kenny) is the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants. Against all odds, the two of them managed to achieve success in show business by two very different routes and skill sets.
Nutsack_Adams@reddit
That’s crazy! I had no idea
Best_Roll_8674@reddit
I saw Bobcat for the first time about two years ago and thought he was great.
TR3BPilot@reddit
Saw Bobcat at the Magic and Comedy Club in Hermosa Beach a while back. He is a lot sharper than people give him credit for, with some solid social observational comedy that is almost up there with George Carlin without the mugging.
coolmist23@reddit
I saw him live in the late '80s. He was funny. I don't know how well his comedy would hold up if it were today. When I've seen him recently on TV I didn't find him funny.
justmisspellit@reddit
He came to my town a few months ago. Still has a dedicated fan base. I also enjoy his Instagram
RainbowButtMonkey1@reddit
I'd love to see Bobcat perform someday. I got to see Gilbert Gottfried perform a few years before his passing and he absolutely killed it

I mean, Robin Williams did the funny cocaine thing well…. I can’t believe I’m typing this.
AddlePatedBadger@reddit
Everyone says how funny Robin Williams was, but to be honest I've never found him to be that great. He was a really good person, but I just never found him nearly as funny as his reputation.
CreativeProfession57@reddit
And that’s your right dude.
He just tickled my funnybone. And the fact that he was just staccato fast with his clips, and non sequiturs was wonderful to me.
I actually recently saw an old clip of him and Jonathon Winters on the Tonight Show. Jonathon Winters was an awesome person too. Too bad I only got to witness him on Scooby-Doo and passed his prime after he went to the funny farm a few times.
txa1265@reddit
Watching a lot of Mork & Mindy on Pluto and ... way too much was just frenetic coked-out running around with everyone else trying to stay out of the way with about 5 minutes of content per episode. Very few laughs. And I loved it back then (and love rewatching other shows) so I was surprised and disappointed.
RainbowButtMonkey1@reddit
Yeah but I personally find that a, lot of comedy was bad for being way too gimmicky back the. Frantic coked out Robin isn't funny but quick witted Robin certainly was
txa1265@reddit
Absolutely agree!
Munkzilla1@reddit
I'll just say it. Robin Williams wasn't funny either. At least I never thought so. He was rather annoying tbh. I hate to say that, so many others loved his style, it just wasn't funny to me.
CreativeProfession57@reddit
I Think he is one of the GOATS of standup and could be a very complete and nuanced actor, from his hard Julliard training.
Opinions differ, and To each their own. - I think the world is a bit dimmer without Robin in it.
RainbowButtMonkey1@reddit
I don't care for manic Robin Williams but but hecwas hilarious when he relied on his wit and acting chops
Munkzilla1@reddit
I enjoyed Robin as an actor. I just didn't like his comedy routines. I don't like that he gone.
ihatepickingnames_@reddit
I wasn’t a fan of his stand up either. Or Mork and Mindy. I loved him in The Fisher King and Good Will Hunting though.
brintoul@reddit
I went back and watched some of his stuff recently and I didn’t really find it all that funny either. I’m sure some of his stuff was good, but whatever I was watching was not.
ExperienceFantastic7@reddit
Yeah, YOU didn't like him. I thought his HBO special was legendary. And I liked him very much as an actor.
Familiar-Image2869@reddit
I never liked him either. Well, actually, I liked him occasionally but, very unpopular opinion, i think he is massively overrated.
Cacti-make-bad-dildo@reddit
Robin Williams was a funny guy, on coke. Bobcat and Sam and some others were said to be funny because of coke, probably be true if you are on coke when watching?
heresyforfunnprofit@reddit
Robin Williams was a great comedian, but he definitely hit plenty of bumps in his career.
CreativeProfession57@reddit

Nutsack_Adams@reddit

Monkeynutz_Johnson@reddit
I saw that in the theater and remember it as being really funny. It probably isn't as funny as I remember. Like the other guy said, things are a product of their time. Not everything last forever. Same token, I'm not going to apologize for the movies I watched or the music I listened to 40 years ago. Can you imagine if "Porky's" was released today? I remember that as being hilarious too. Was it really?
brintoul@reddit
Porky’s was probably funny to 14-16 year old us and might still be funny to 14-16 year olds but I kinda doubt it.
Best_Roll_8674@reddit
He'd be successful in a Joey Diaz type of way, but not like he was in the 80s.
Blood_Such@reddit
George Carlin must be timeless in that case.
Because his stuff holds up today.
BullTerrierTerror@reddit
It doesn’t. “Your feelings, opinions and vote doesn’t matter” bullshit has destroyed civil discourse and democracy.
The cure for an ill democracy is more democracy. If the majority of people in this country don’t vote, the loudest and most emotional voters will have a greater sway over the election in any district.
Blood_Such@reddit
I listen to George Carlin and I vote every election. And I read before voting so that I’m not a low info voter.
rhythmchef@reddit
I have to disagree. He was my favorite comedian growing up, so naturally I play his stuff from time to time for my employees in the kitchen that are as young as 17 and they can't get enough of it. Then again, it's a kitchen.

He did the material of the time but he wasn't a hack. Like his contemporaries that continued to be successful, he'd adjust his routine.
RainbowButtMonkey1@reddit
Yeah he'd would've had to adjust to avoid being dated but he was no hack and he had legit comedic chops
PaulClarkLoadletter@reddit
Even Hicks, who I think most of us admire, had stuff that would be cringey these days. It wasn't perceived at the time as punching down which like the rest of the heavies would not have done had the dialogue been different at the time.
We've smartened up as a society quite a bit since then. We've taking a few steps back here and there but we're figuring it out.
RainbowButtMonkey1@reddit
I'll use Jerry Seinfeld as another example of how comedic tastes change. Observational comedy was all the rage in the 80s and 90s but younger ppl general don't go for that style of comedy
mgzzzebra@reddit
Comedy is both contextual and based in its timeliness.
Someone like sam wasnt a comedian who had brilliant writing. You look at the like George Carlin, some of his material is very time based but his concepts for most of his stuff still funny as hell. And didn't require schtick to carry the joke
Parking_Low248@reddit
I like to think he'd be able to spend a little time, read the room, and adapt. But maybe not.
proscriptus@reddit
He was a shock comic, his stuff does not hold up well. It's possible that he was smart enough that he would be able to pivot into a kind of Anthony Jeselnik schtick though, if he wanted to stop yelling.
1920MCMLibrarian@reddit
Yeah i loved the state on mtv in the 90’s but when i bought the dvds and watched it for the first time in 30 years…. It wasn’t funny like I remembered and I was very disappointed.
Jasong222@reddit
There's no shortage of overdone fake rage these days
geodebug@reddit
He'd still have the same comedic brain so I see no reason why he wouldn't hone his act to something that resonates today like any other working comedian.
Fuck, the screaming alone at all the bullshit in our world is something many of us would relate to today.
RevolutionEasy714@reddit
It wasn't funny then. This dude was annoying AF in the 80's and was basically just a dude who yelled stuff.
Tasty_Artichoke2626@reddit
Disagree. His comedy would have evolved. The posthumously released Live From Hell shows Sam's versatility. He still would have had his unique take on current events.
Select-Belt-ou812@reddit

Wise_Ad_253@reddit

Fancy_Art_6383@reddit
Misogyny?
Every great male comedian has at least a couple of good misogynistic jokes just to rile up the crowd and some self deprecating ones as well, but to base your whole act around it is a bit crass.
I did like Kinison, but not Clay.
Just look at Chapelle and all the trans stuff he did. The first time I watched it I was like oh no, he's going to get cancelled by the alphabet mafia+ and then the second time around I found the humor in it. His last special was 99% bashing and it was hilarious, because they're just jokes and will always offend someone.
I learned not to take em so seriously.

He would be canceled because people don't know how to take a joke these days.
Zaphod_Beeblecox@reddit
Why do you expect that is? I have a theory that it's because a shitload of people only really interact with humans in more than a surface level through social media these days.
It's really hard to get the essence of a joke across in text form. So much of comedy comes from inflection and timing. Things it's patently impossible to replicate in writing.
Fickle-Woodpecker596@reddit
His stuff wouldn't translate into this society now. It was a different world in the 80s. Bill Hicks would be interesting if he was still around.

Glad you mentioned Hicks. His takes on social media, tiktokers, "influencers", and everything else would be glorious. Part of Hicks appeal was he gave no fucks, and we need that kind of iconoclast again.

Like I said too fragile because in his day, he was hilarious, your generation is too “politically correct” you want to be nice and save the world it’s a great fantasy but the reality is that will never happen. There will always be some country trying to take over another country, war, violence, hatred etc.
sausage-deluxxxe@reddit
Sam Kinison isn't/wasn't edgy. He screamed a lot, used swear words and didn't say funny things. He got away with it cause that was the biz then.

It’s tempting to say that there are dozens and dozens of things that our society won’t allow today because of wokeness or whatever, but I think that’s lazy and reductive thinking.
In truth, there is a LOT of comedy today that is explicitly created with the strategy of combatting “wokeness”. In fact, it’s a pretty sizable chunk of the comedy on Netflix and social media. No one is preventing any of these folks from doing what they want, but their entire schtick is built around that idea. (Sort of like the KISS Army was a marketing ploy to convince children in the 70s that someone was trying to stop them all from listening to KISS).
Personally, I thought kinison’s core skills were excellent. And that’s what matters.
Because things that were funny in 1986 aren’t necessarily funny anymore, as much due to changes in entertainment preferences as changes in values. But if his fundamentals were solid, he was more than capable of pivoting and being successful.
I view it like the discussion around athletes: I firmly believe that with the benefits of modern science, training, and nutrition, that Jerry West, Michael Jordan, and Wilt Chamberlain could shift their games to dominate the NBA today, because their core skills were there. Same with Sam.
We need more former preachers on stage.
AddlePatedBadger@reddit
You can still do comedy and not be worried about wokeness. I think there is an interesting example in the difference between Jimmy Carr and Ricky Gervais. Both trade in similar edgy comedy. But I think the main difference is that Ricky Gervais comes across as genuinely transphobic, where as Jimmy Carr clearly isn't. I will laugh at Jimmy's jokes, but hearing Gervais recently just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It comes across as laughing at the expense of others rather than laughing with them.
Gervais also devotes half his energy to whinging and whining about how "wokeness" has ruined comedy. Carr doesn't do that at all. He is very intelligent and astute enough to recognise that society changes, that what is funny to one person isn't funny to another, and when and how to deliver different kinds of humour.
I think usually what is happening with these anti-woke whingers is that their comedy is coming across as being hateful and people aren't liking it. And rather than recognise that hey, society doesn't find it funny anymore to punch down on someone and adjusting accordingly, they double down and decide it is the children who are wrong.

Weird question, but I'd prefer a Mitch Hedberg or Bill Hicks. Kinison was in the same vein as Andrew Dice Clay.

I’ve seen both Dice and Kinison perform live. Dice was a one note character. Sam was an actual comedian, telling stories and relatable frustrations of the world. I wish I’d seen Hedburg live, but I did follow his comedy while he was around. I only see;y found out about Hicks after he passed.
Squigglepig52@reddit
I feel a little bad for Dice, in that most people don't get that the Dice Man was a character, not his real self.

Here’s a tough take: The left would hate George Carlin if he was alive and doing comedy today. His disdain for political correctness would eventually have led him to the Bill Maher realm. It’s happened over and over. Right now, 2/3 of the surviving Pythons are insufferable xenophobes.
As for Carlin, I, for one, am glad that one of my last images of him was him presciently yelling “Tucker? Fuck Tucker!!!”

I was reading up (wiki knows EVERYTHING. Yah, even has a page with the schedule of when you do the thing with your finger.) on Sam. The kid that killed him was drunk driving. Was put on parole for 1 year, given 300hrs of community service and no license for 2 years. Pretty sure that'd be man slaughter today.
My point is, we tolerated more shit back then. Sam would have likely gotten himself canceled before he made it big. His angry rants would have been turned towards...? He was edgy back in the day, which is why we loved him. I think he would have done good guest spots on TV and in movies. They'd just have to tease you with stuff that would make Sam explode, normally, but not in this movie. We'd be waiting the whole time for it to happen and when it did, people would be howling. Like an in-joke.
He was a product of the times. I am grateful for the laughs he gave us. And for being fat and loud and not giving a fuck.
UpStateSaints@reddit
Would be a good laugh
paulmania1234@reddit
Not much. The comedy world is still a sewer ran by predatory comedians. Watched a Netflix special dark queen I think. Pretty racially charged. Louie CK was the producer. Theres still stories about women having to perform sexual favors if they want on stage. I think the rage machine is selective. Anthony Jesselnik put it best. The art of comedy is getting away with it

ChikenCherryCola@reddit
Heres how comedy and laughter works: you establish an expectation with a person then you immediately present them with something contrary to that. Peoples beains struggle to quickly reconcile unmet expectation and what ends up happening is your brain kind of short circuits. For example, if I walked up to you, looking sketchy and said "wanna see my pipe?" And then looked both ways before pulling out a 4" section of PVC pipe with a T joint on one end, youd probably laugh. I set the expectation of illicit contraband and saod pipe and set you up with the expectation of a weed pipe or a crack pipe, but then presented you with unexpected sprinkler parts.
This is literally all of comedy and this is why comedy isnt considered art. Its a psychological evolutionary response or something and the practice is just stimulating the response. Its not a wokeness anti wokeness culture war thing, its literally just a set up and betrayal of expectations. Peoples expectations are extremely related to the context they live in. In the 50s, women were straight up not allowed to wear pants and clothes general were so restrictive, so like the whole bigs bunny in drag seducing elmer fudd thing was genuinely like difficukt for audiences to sort of reconcile. You can say the same about every other era of comedy. Rodney dangerfield "i hate my wife" comedy for boomers, seinfeld observational comedy for gen x, dane cook/ aziz ansari style silly man yells loudly about doing silly things style conedy for millenials.
The problem with comedy now is really the death of the monoculture. Comedy is a very hard thing to do when your audience is completely balkanized into different online algorithm bubbles of media. Again, youre trying to establish and subvert expectations from people with increasingly disparate world views and kind of experiences of reality. Its not a matter of sensitivity and people taking offense to the wrong thing, its just a matter of everyone having different mental circumstances. On some level, some people are going to take offense, but the thing is the offense takers are kind of an attention lightning rod for all the other people who werent offended but also didnt laugh at the joke because they didnt find it funny. Its not surprising that the new home of comedy is podcasts where like mibded audiences congregate. Theres right and left wing comedy, theres different strands of apolitical comedy. The sort of absurd comedy styles of time and eric are like a revolution in comedy, similar situation with bo burnham, these guys arent political, they are so absurd and abstract they run the gambit between so absurd you cant reconcile it so you laugh and so absurd you cant reconcile it so you find it alienating and upsetting.
Sammy really had a bead on the zeitgeist in the 80s that made him funny, but thats just sort of what comedy is. Like its kind of amazing weird al is still a thing, frankly he seems pretty amazed by it too. Thats just kind of how it goes tho.

He's been punching all around for years. Some are just hypersensitive about it.
botmanmd@reddit
He’s an insider now. Comfortable. He was far funnier and more innovative when he was subversive. But, I won’t exert too much energy defending the unprovable proposition that young people today would have found 2005 Chappelle hilarious.
