Neighbour complaining because their new bedroom is next to my living room?
Posted by Exact_Astronaut9329@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 241 comments
I live in a terraced house, with five properties either side of mine. My next door neighbour had some pretty hardcore renovations done to their property, starting in early August and finishing just over a week ago. Not only do I work from home, but I work from home through the evening into the wee hours of the morning. After work, I chill for a couple of hours before turning in for the day. During work, I am as quiet as I can be. I never take calls at these hours, I don't type loudly anyway, and headphones are never disconnected from the laptop and/or phone. Never had a complaint from them before. Amicable, but I never had any interest in taking our relationship beyond pleasantries, so we left it at that.
From my neighbour's house, however: Banging, crashing, smashing, drilling, shouting, grinding, and more, from Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm and 8am to 3pm on Saturday. Sunday was the only day without any works going on, but any peace was decimated by the family that lives there screaming and shouting at each other for much of it. So, outside of their hour lunch break, I had no peace. Three months of this. It was horrific.
I didn't complain once - not to them, nor any sort of authority. For one, the builders were working during permitted hours, and for two, I came to the conclusion that any complaint on my part could lead to delays in the renovations, which I just wanted to be over and done with as quickly as possible. Besides, I don't like kicking up a fuss anyway.
On the best days, it was a major inconvenience, while on the worst days it was borderline intolerable. After around a week of getting hardly any sleep due to the works starting just a few hours into my sleep, I gradually changed my sleep schedule to ensure I was awake while they were working and that I would be able to sleep at night. My performance at work suffered as a result of the constant barrage of noise, and working through the night, when the builders were not there, was no longer an option.
I powered through, and the work was finally completed. Thank god. I got myself back on schedule, and everything was just the way it was before. For a few days anyway.
Yesterday evening, the woman next door knocked. She came to tell me that I was making far too much noise at night. Confused as to why she had never complained before, I told her that I wasn't aware I was making as much noise as she was purporting. In fact, I knew I wasn't making anywhere even close to the noise she was purporting. Turns out, one of the renovations they had done was converting part of the living room into a bedroom, with a wall between the two, leaving a smaller living room and a bedroom. This new bedroom is right next to the room from which I work.
She asked me what I was going to do about it. As you can imagine, I could have said a lot more to her - and I wanted to, believe me - but I left it at this: "You're the one who chose to put a bedroom right next to my living room. Are you asking me to change my lifestyle, which you've never had a problem with in six years, to accommodate yours?" Something to that effect.
"Well, I can't sleep at night with all the typing and footsteps and moving about."
I live on my own, I type as quietly as the keyboard will allow, I use headphones on all of my devices (even the TV, which I usually watch to chill out after work), and my floors are carpeted, so what's the problem? I really don't make any noise, and I know it.
After some more ranting and raving from her, I just put my hand up, told her it was her poor decision that got her here, and that there is nothing I can do. Then I closed the door and she went off in a huff.
Am I in the wrong here? If anyone could provide any advice on how to move forward, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
itsapotatosalad@reddit
Fuck em. Make as much noise as you like, you already do more than anyone should to try and keep noise down, they live in a house attached to another, and with that comes neighbours.
Outrageous-Play7616@reddit
Have you thought about starting a renovation? Give them something to really complain about.
knight-under-stars@reddit
This pretty much sums it up. Its not you that has rearranged your home to cause this situation, it is her.
HawkyMacHawkFace@reddit
I renovated my flat last year and put soundproofing on the wall with my noisy neighbor. The difference is amazing. They should do it and stop fucking whining lol
cpn_banana@reddit
This is a brilliant response OP and I don’t think you could have done any better.
oktimeforplanz@reddit
Depends on the keyboard. I used to have a keyboard my partner could hear from the next room. I doubt OP has a loud clacky mechanical keyboard if they work so late at night and are very conscious of the noise they generate though.
blither86@reddit
What could really help is putting it on some cushioning so that the noise isn't transferred into the desk and then amplified. I had this issue with housemates before and now my keyboard is on some little soft pads. It isn't even a mechanical one and they can be louder than anyone here, without direct experience, would possibly expect. Like, louder than an effin typewriter.
skeleton_jam@reddit
I have this issue too with a normal Apple keyboard. Ended up putting it on a cork trivet. Works well!
blither86@reddit
Trivet? I learned a new word today.
gyroda@reddit
I'd suggest one of those big housemate you can get that covers most/all of your desk
blither86@reddit
Yeah, the housemates that cover your desk are definitely the best.
gyroda@reddit
My autocorrect has been incredibly opinionated lately 😅 it's gone so far as to replace valid words with words it thinks are more appropriate.
blither86@reddit
No worries, I was trying to prize in a joke about laying your housemate over your desk but it didn't really work.
Aggie_Smythe@reddit
I would say that it’s only possible to hear typing through a brick wall if OP was using an old manual typewriter, which they obviously are not.
Comfortable-Mix-7209@reddit
I viewed a terraced house once in an old mining town and noticed a small dent in one of the walls, I prodded it and ended up putting my finger right through into next doors living room. Those walls definitely were not thick!
Yikes44@reddit
I live in a mid tessace and no it's not. I can't hear anything quieter than my neighbour's TV.
Faerie_Nuff@reddit
Lmao right? Mid terrace here too and the whole sentence "all the typing and footsteps and moving about" just about finished me. Raving to dnb at 3am? Sure. Rearranging the living room and heavy furnishings? Yup. Hell even singing along to your favourite tunes. Definitely...
But all the typing? Footsteps? And, let me check this again, moving about? Some people just live for the drama, can't wait to hear the neighbour file that police report. "Officer, he types... TYPES... at night. Can you even? On top of that, sometimes, I shit you not, this guy moves like actually MOVES, with his FEET!!!... No no it's not a flat, why do you ask?".
I've watched too much nightmare neighbour to suggest doing anything other than setting security cameras up ensuring the only point towards one's own property and just laughing from behind a nice, closed door. But not before walking over to the desk, and hitting "F" for my sanity, repeatedly.
martzgregpaul@reddit
I can hear next door walking up her stairs. Its a bit creepy as it sounds like someone coming up mine. Typing though...no chance
Remarquisa@reddit
That's usually because there's a loose brick that both your stringers are attached to - so the physical movement transfers from one staircase to the other and makes it creak slightly.
martzgregpaul@reddit
Probably this house is 119 years old and jerry built
Zavodskoy@reddit
I live in a middle terrace house, neighbours to my left have 3 kids, ages 7, 9 and 15, the 15 year is going through his emo phase.
To my right my neighbours also have 3 kids, ages 5, 7 and 9, the 9 year old has pretty severe autsim so that comes with it's own set of challenges and the occasional meltdown.
Unless they're out in the garden I very rarely hear them, once a week at most unless they're out in their back garden in the summer but I'm not such a grinch that I'm going to tell kids to stop playing, if I shut the window I can barely hear them. So that's 5 hyper active children and a teenager who blasts metal music to wind his mum up and I still hardly hear them. I have a mechanical keyboard which is fairly loud and I'm often up late playing video games and I know for a fact there's a bedroom literally the other side of the wall about 5 feet from where I'm sat typing this comment. They have never once complained about me keeping anyone awake in the 5 years I've lived here even when I'm on voice chat with my friends and conversely I've never complained about them because hearing them is the exception not the norm. If I can't hear 5 hyper active children and a moody teenager they sure as shit can't hear my keyboard
atomic_mermaid@reddit
Depends. I lived somewhere where I heard everything; opening doors, cabinets, their alarm clock, when they sneezed...
Opening_Succotash_95@reddit
Yes it depends on how they were built. I know someone who lived in what are sometimes called 'four in a block' houses, which are quite common in Scotland. Looks like a semi detached, the difference is that the upstairs is a different home and each one has a separate entrance on street level. Sometimes they're really great homes, my gran and granda used to live in one.
But this guy's was built in the 1930s I think and it was done very cheaply, I think the 'soundproofing' was sawdust. Could make out normal conversations. His downstairs neighbour would complain that they were being kept awake by this guy's fan being on!
OP's neighbour may have actually ripped out some of the soundproofing, I wouldn't be shocked.
pinkthreadedwrist@reddit
Some keyboards and some walls... yes.
studionlm@reddit
Literally just had a similar conversation with my neighbour whom decided years ago to make her bedroom part of her kitchen which is right next to our kitchen. We've two small children whom wake up at ungodly hours and scream, slam cabinet doors, etc. She lives in a 5 bedroom house with a loft conversion. She has one lodger (she was done for having multiple lodgers with no license before). She complains and taps on the party wall because of the noise. It's like lady, you decided to live next to the noisiest room in the house! YOUR CHOICE! Not mine.
Kopites_Roar@reddit
The following phrase comes to mind : "a lack of planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on my part".
Sounds like they didn't think things through but either way they can't force you to stop anything.
There won't be a court in the land that sees walking or typing as a noise issue.
Pen_dragons_pizza@reddit
Exactly, if she is that bothered she should have paid for soundproofing
LovelyxSapphire@reddit
Advise her to put in some sound proofing. Landlord of property next door converted it into two flats which means my bedroom next to living room next door. They added sound proofing at time. A lot of UK buildings have thin walls. But she made changes, made your life a hell through building works so on her to remedy the matter.
throwaway_t6788@reddit
tbf did they actually KNOW they were putting their bedroom next to OP's living room?
Opening_Succotash_95@reddit
Probably a safe assumption for them since they were converting part of their own living room. Most commonly these sorts of houses are 'mirrored' through the walls.
throwaway_t6788@reddit
oh yeah that is TRUE.. i forgot
Mortensen@reddit
Hard agree, this is her problem of her own making, not yours. If she'd had some forethought she should have put some sound proofing in when she did the rennovations. And it's a terraced house, of course there's going to be some noise transference.
If you're as quiet as you say you are then I'd ignore her and report it if she keeps bothering you about it.
If it's just general 'living' noise then she really doesn't have a leg to stand on.
DeedPopo@reddit
Agree, probably baulked at the cost of installing soundproofing measures.
Time for some (only slightly noisy) counter measures.
Junkie_Joe@reddit
Agree with this but aren't pubs and clubs getting in trouble with the council when new builds are put up nearby and residents complain of the noise. Like the council doesn't apply common sense so it might well be OP's problem in their eyes.
algypan@reddit
If she thinks you're being a noisy neighbour, she should try living next door to some of the arseholes I've lived next door to...
To me you sound like an ideal neighbour!
cat_holiday_dream74@reddit
She can invest in some decent ear plugs if she's such a light sleeper. You're not doing anything which would constitute a noise nuisance . My partner is a loud snorer as has sleep apnoea and I can hear him even if I sleep in another room .My silicone ear plugs drown that out. That's much louder than what you described..
tpzbae@reddit
maybe advise him to build some more sound proof on the walls, should help and if not then he should've just move it somewhere else, its not your fault.
Fluffy_Register_8480@reddit
Really sympathise with you. I’m in a semi and I came back from work a few weeks ago to find my neighbours had started an extension without notifying me and their builders had accessed my property to put up scaffolding in my garden and dug up my patio to pour their foundations without ever asking permission. It’s still not fixed. I was and remain fucking furious.

Sensitive-Fishing-64@reddit
tell her the problem is soundproofing, it's incredibly unreasonable to moan about typing and footsteps, and tell her outside of levitating nothing can be done on your side. She needs to find a solution, either do some soundproofing work, move her room again, the bed, play some white noise, or invest in some earplugs.
not a lot she can do about it in terms of getting you to stop, if she compains she will get no where with the authorities
Global_Research_9335@reddit
She should get a white noise machine. And put sound panels on the adjoining wall - to can get sone Quite stylish decorative sines these days. All this to say it’s in her to wove her problem, not you

Wow, a reasonable response rather than the majority of people who are too socially inept to push back.
Very reasonable response.

You are right. They made the choice to put a room there. You have no obligation to change your lifestyle.
EffectsTV@reddit
Slept in my summerhouse last night as the neighbour was screaming at his xbox last night at 2am...the occasional stomp on the floor when he got killed
The summer house is insulated and has a sofa bed, electric heater for 2 hours kept the temp at 15c by the time I woke up which is great considering how cold it is right now..
Maybe I should just move my bedroom out there..seriously people with detached houses don't know how good they have it lol
MentalPlectrum@reddit
Be even louder.
SeaElephant8890@reddit
I wonder if they have had any alterations to the chimney breast in the room with the new bedroom ?
Friends neighbours did this and would then complain constantly that they could hear everything.
Due_Reflection0@reddit
I was wondering about this too. I'd looked into altering my chimney breast if my neighbour consented, but decided against it because I learned it can lead to noise problems.
AvinItLarge123@reddit
If it's a shared chimney then there's some regulations around that OP might want to make sure they've followed

You're not being unreasonable in the slightest. I'd also stop using headphones and buy an old clicky keyboard.

That means that you are allowed to use your property as you wish & as long as your activities are lawful & the impact upon neighbours is minimal & in line with normal activities given the location then you are doing no wrong. You are allowed, whenever you so wish, to type, do the hoovering etc as that would be considered normal & the sound levels generated would not trouble a decibel meter in the neighbouring property. More fool them for not considering the location of their bedroom & installing effective sound proofing when they conducted their renovations.

You are not wrong. I would preemptively contact any HOA or co-op board to discuss the neighbor’s renovation and their completely absurd complaints. Make sure they had the correct permits to have a bedroom where they put it. You can even go so far as filing a complaint against the neighbor first. Do what you need to do to protect yourself. If there is no board, co-op, or HOA, there really isn’t anything she can to do you or vice versa. Just keep being a good neighbor and ignore her.
Former_Wang_owner@reddit
Modern sound deadening materials would have easily sorted this for a couple of hundred quid and losing 2" from the width of the room. Sounds like they cheaper out and regret it.

Threads like this will always remind me that living in a detached is the only way to go.
Dogstile@reddit
It really depends on the build. I live in a house that's really four houses all jammed together in a square and I can't hear shit. Its beautiful.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Same, the only thing you need to worry about is a wall mounted TV on a shared wall, the vibrations carry through and amplify the sound.
Other than that, you can't actually hear through the walls.
dejavu2064@reddit
Sorry, the TV speakers? It makes no sense how people spend thousands on a large OLED TV, go to the effort of wall mounting it, and then just use the internal speakers. Even a pair of cheap active bookshelf speakers would be a hundred-fold improvement. In fact it's cheaper than a wall mount, just leave it on a stand and get the speakers.
I'm horrified on your behalf.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Yeah, I had a neighbour who mounted it on the shared wall.
I let him come round and hear how bad it was and he apologised and moved it to an adjacent wall on an arm.
It was his granddaughters in a room only used on occasional weekends, so not an expensive OLED.
ganjapeace@reddit
Yeah but that could all change if a new neighbour that loves drum and bass moves in

Ok while I don't encourage such behaviour....here's a thought.
Setup/create a recording of a baby crying on a staggered loop through the night, like starts at 10pm for an hour, repeats randomly every 1.5-2hrs until 6am. Use a wifi plug/timer plug, whatever, setup a cam pointing towards your flat door (from inside).
Then go away for the weekend...
Let absolute chaos ensue, if they say anything just say your sister was staying for the weekend, has a new born, what can you do eh, bit like renovations, the downside of tenement living, but next time she visits you will let them know.
I'd say they will pipe down about the moving and the typing after that.
Btw the camera is there in case they go full radge on you and kick the door in :)
Lily_Hylidae@reddit
Tell her she's welcome to come and live in my flat for a bit. I can hear my neighbour flushing the loo, drawing the curtains, and hoovering. When she has her grandkids over, it sounds like they are doing parkour round the flat. I don't complain because that's what communal living is like, especially in newer builds where the walls seem to be made of balsa wood. Your neighbour put herself in this situation by putting a bedroom downstairs.
Sorry, no helpful advice to offer!

She scoffed and walked away muttering to herself.
In all honesty I got her point but it was the way she said it. I left them there for another month and then put them in the back garden. You’re doing nothing wrong, screw them. Some people are just entitled and you will be the first time they’ve been told no - and they really don’t like it. They get used to it eventually.

theAlHead@reddit
They probably should have installed insulation/sound proofing along with the renovation.
Them not being able to sleep because of the odd quiet noise isn't your problem.
LoganStarwalker@reddit
There is a phrase that fits, I believe it's a US based one, "Piss poor planning on your part does not constitute and emergency on my part"
Bertybassett99@reddit
First of all. You made a mistake not complaining. You should have got that recorded. In thisnworle if you dont highlight Something that's wrong, the person doing it doesn't know there doing it or doesn't care enough about their actions.
Second. In spite of the shit they put you through. If they start monitoring the noise you make then they potentially have a case with the council.
Its irrelevant to the council that they made loads of nosie in the process. Its irrelevant to the council that they moved a bedroom next to a living room.
If you had highlighted the noise as you should have done then a: it would have forced them to mitigate it. B: you have a ton of leverage.
Sadly it doesn't sound like they are reasonable. A reasonbke person would consider the noise they are making. Not all people are reasonable.
You can suggest to. them that they sound insulate the party wall or you can do it.
Good luck
AggravatingWedding91@reddit
Only if the noise is excessive. From what OP is saying, it's not. I doubt any officer of environmental health would consider moving around or typing at a keyboard to be excessive. Also, found this on my council's website:
Bertybassett99@reddit
The noise has to be unreasonable. Not excessive. That leaves it open to interpretation. The standard way of monitoring is to set up sound meters, so it just comes down to volume. (Which is bormally interpreterd as excessive noise) I doubt very much that the OP will have any issues whatsoever.
And to add commercial noise is 8am to 6pm. Monday to Friday and upto 1pm on Saturday.
If you stick to those domestically you won't go wrong.
In essence the OP didn't need to put up with the shit they did put up with. Its the neighbours responsibility to ensure they manage the noise during the build.
Which makes the whole thing rather galling when the neighbour comes round and complains.....
But is the nature of the ignorant and the entitled and the I dont care.
A reasonable person talks to their neighbour prior to starting work. A reasonable person tried to find out what works and what doesn't. That generally makes it easier for both parties.
Personally I would have been round there right away the minute they made excessive noise. It doesn't take long to build a record of complaints and the council will come down on people like a ton of bricks if you provide satisfactory evidence.
lduxuifjicu@reddit
Sounds like a "them" problem.
Traditional-Win354@reddit
Tell them to sod off
NrthnLd75@reddit
A renovation as large as they have done would "possibly" have requuired being up to current building regs on stuff like soundproofing. Tough shit on their part.
BovrilJizz@reddit
What are your walls made of if she can hear you typing on your keyboard?
Clearly_Blurry@reddit
She should get herself some loop earplugs lol
Important-Constant25@reddit
Tell her to put in some ear plugs. Its not about you its her thing, let her figure out how to deal with it. Reasonable noise levels are for you to deal with, not change so there's complete silence constantly.
i-like-flying-high@reddit
As part of her renovation, knowing that she's creating a bedroom next to your living area, she should have put some soundproofing on the party wall. You're not being unreasonable, she is.
Random_Person1020@reddit
Offer to be generous and give her some empty egg cartoons to stick on the bedroom wall :)
New-Duck-6401@reddit
Simply tell her earplugs.
UndyingKarric@reddit
If this bedroom is on the ground floor, is this potentially a change due to necessity, Eg. Could there be mobility issues meaning she now struggles with stairs?
Not saying the way she’s handled it is correct by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s worth seeing both sides of the argument.
IllustriousKey9203@reddit
I lived in a terrace next to a student rental, with the dickheads next door playing loud music, screaming, slamming doors and having parties until the early hours constantly midweek. Took best part of a year to get anything done about it, and even then the 'anything done' was the council telling them to pipe down a bit. And then they moved out and the next lot moved in.
Your neighbour is unreasonable and would get absolutely laughed out of the office if she went to environmental health over typing and footsteps. Your response is entirely appropriate.
bowak@reddit
Sounds like a great time to take up a musical instrument.
Alnonnymouse@reddit
Reminds me of a older colleague of mine who bought a big ole house that backs onto a field, turns out it’s a schools field and she’s pissed off that kids run around on it 5 days a week whilst she’s trying to enjoy her semi retirement and few WFH hours and now wants to move due to the noise. She got very arsey with me for not showing any sympathy 🤦♂️ OP your response was spot on, if anything too polite. You carry on doing you, she should have factored into more insulation or sound deadening
Spare_Account_73@reddit
And this right here is why I’m so happy to live next door to an elderly couple who are so hard of hearing that I can run my washing machine at 2 am and they don’t even realise.

I might be wrong but I do believe some bright techy types have come up with a file that makes a Quack sound every time you press a key on your keyboard.
Add that to a keyboard with rubber duck keycaps (super cute!) And let the games begin.
Dependent_Phone_8941@reddit
Why didn’t they sound insulate while doing all the works?
First thing I did on a semi I am doing up to rent out.
Opening_Succotash_95@reddit
If anything it sounds like they've probably removed sound insulation as part of the renovation.
WaspsForDinner@reddit
In my living room I fully insulated the party wall because I was sick of the neighbour's TV being louder than mine, and buried it all behind massive built-in alcove bookcases.
I know that whoever next buys my house will tear it out (because the TV goes in the corner of the room, not boring books, and where will the giant L-shaped sofa go?), and then wonder why they're not having a good time. I even wrote various warnings under each layer of insulation; "The walls are very thin and the neighbours are rude dickheads; you have been warned!" - that kind of thing.
Beginning-Leek8545@reddit
How did your neighbour know that you work from that room? Surely they can’t really hear you typing, right?
WaspsForDinner@reddit
It's entirely possible that they can - even very light noise, especially if it's percussive, can travel quite far given the right circumstances (traditional terraced buildings sometimes share joists, for example, and often have paper-thin single skin party walls).
That said, it's still the neighbour's problem. If they're annoyed by entirely reasonable living sounds, then they need to sort it from their side.
BppnfvbanyOnxre@reddit
Well not until they put the stethoscope to wall no.

Dmorts@reddit
I can advise your neighbour what they need to do from their side. Such low level noises being heard through the wall would indicate there are gaps in the brick work. It can be fixed with simple materials and attention to detail. Strip back to bare brick. Fill any large gaps, repoint if necessary. Apply a parge coat to seal the whole wall. Build a stud wall spaced away from the brick wall. Friction fit insulation in frame. Cover with 2 x sound block plasterboard.
A caveat is that assumes the wall is the issue, and not a fireplace, or sound flanking around the wall, e.g. under the floor, through the ceiling void etc.
BitTwp@reddit
Their problem. They can swap the tiny new bedroom with the now tiny half-sized lounge. Simple
SensibleChapess@reddit
In the past, when I lived in terraced houses or semi-detacheds, if ever I did any major DiY to a room I would always take the opportunity to add some soundproofing to the walls adjoining a neighbour.
This was because, even if I couldn't hear them next door, I'd never be able to guarantee that if they moved away that noisy people wouldn't replace them. Also, I like to think that I'm a reasonable person and would hate it if I occasionally made any noise that others could hear.
Your neighbour is ignorant: In a terraced house, with major building works going on, they're utter idiots not to have taken the opportunity to have put at least some soundproofing up!!!
Utwig_Chenjesu@reddit
Rediscover your love of that old song, 'Yellow Poker Dot Bikini' with a speaker pressed firmly up against the wall, on repeat. Its a wonderful tune, best appreciated through noise canceling headphones while you work in a different room. NTA

queen-bathsheba@reddit
They should have put soundproofing as part of the renovations. It doesn't block out everything but does help.

Western-Mall5505@reddit
The walls in my terrace house are so thin. Sometimes I think someone is going to come into the bathroom, only to realise that it's next door.
The lady who lived there has just died, I'm dreading the thought of a family moving in because I know there's nothing to be done about the noise.
ComprehensiveAd8815@reddit
What the bets that she has exposed brick walls in her new rooms. A neighbour did this and wondered why their bedroom had become cold and noisy despite all of the ‘ work’ they had done on it
Delicious_Bag1209@reddit
My neighbours did this and also pulled up all their carpets. Can now pinpoint exactly which room they’re using.

azlan121@reddit
You're not being unreasonable, however, you do also need to be practical, your neighbour has the potential to make your life very awkward if you fall out, this could be anything from just not being friendly in passing, to getting the council involved and pursuing an ASBO or noise abatement notice, as well as potentially getting the landlord/freeholder involved if you rent/leasehold, or leaving you with a dispute that you would need to declare when you come to sell the place. Rightly or wrongly, it's generally assumed that noise during the day is ok, but noise at night isn't.
Being reasonable, it's on them to soundproof their new bedroom, but it may be easier to do the work yourself just to get them off your back.
If you wanted to be petty, you could start looking into whether the works have had building control approval, if they don't, the local authority can make their lives difficult on your behalf
catchcatchhorrortaxi@reddit
This is total nonsense. What are you on about.
Mysterious_Water_139@reddit
>A council investigating noise from INSIDE another persons home
Absolutely delusional
ConstantKnowledge741@reddit
An ASBO for normal household noise? I don't think so.
azlan121@reddit
No, not generally, a noise abatement notice through the council would be common, but it doesn't mean that the neighbour won't make your life a giant pain and pursue getting one, repeatedly calling the police out etc...
stevoknevo70@reddit
I looked into this a month or so ago as a guy was on greeting that his neighbour reported him to the landlady for excessive through the night noise (he was an international student who both worked and socialised with family/friends back home, adamant he wasn't being excessively noisy, said measured max 56db IIRC, admitted the building wasn't the best constructed) From what I could gather, you can be 10db above ambient noisefloor before it becomes a nuisance, and that'll vary depending on the environment around where you live - I measured my living room's ambient noise level a few weeks ago in a dead silent room and it was 34dB, so OP would need to be above 44dB 'in my room' before it'd be considered a nuisance, and given they said they've always got headphones on that leaves only typing and physically moving around as sources of noise.
I'd definitely be finding out if she got planning consent for the alterations because they sound pretty extensive given the time frame.
joeykins82@reddit
"Maybe your renovation should have included enhanced acoustic insulation in the new bedroom, which you chose to have positioned in an unusual location?"
Peter_gggg@reddit
It's a terraced house. They are what they are.

trbd003@reddit
Devils advocate.
Some people are just completely unaware of the fact that what goes on inside their home affects people around it. People live in bubbles especially when inside their houses and cars and genuinely do not realise that what happens inside, also happens outside. Its a weird thing.
So communication is key, and arguably, you might have been better to communicate some of your issues during the renovations. The way that neighbour disputes work, nothing you did in the past ever seems to remedy the future. Her mentality will be that if you didn't say owt, it's because there wasn't a problem.
Has she made a poor decision? Yes. Should she have to live with that? Also yes. Are you obliged to solve it? No. Could you mitigate it? If you could, maybe you should.
Its usually better to get on with your neighbours even if they are morons.
Radiant_Sir5160@reddit
I think you should start putting up shelves at 10:50pm for 10 mins as loud as you can and make sure to stop before 11 so there is no unsociable noise complaint possible

She literally caused the problem.
I remember when I moved in to a council flat quickly to get away from an ex...it was a ground floor flat with two above. No one was in the middle, but there was a couple on the top who blasted music from about 4pm until 4am. I got home from work after two bus journeys that took over an hour at around 8pm and was up again at 5am. They did this every single night and all day and night at weekends (I worked Saturday too).
I moved out after about 3 months because I couldn't take it...walked past them on my way to put some things in the van and they claimed to not have known I was even there at all. THREE MONTHS I was there...it's just bullshit :')
ElvishMystical@reddit
You might suggest she sleeps naturally upside down in the attic, because if she can hear you typing through a wall then she must be a bat.
I can't see how you're in the wrong. I live in social housing in a first floor flat in London and have (what I assume) a similar lifestyle to you. I've asked my downstairs neighbour and she's said that there's the odd bit of movement, she hears when I drop something in the kitchen, but outside of that she doesn't hear me.
But I recognise the type of neighbour.
But see the other thing is, you live in a terraced house which I assume is in a built up area. I don't believe she can hear you but even if there was a bit of noise transference, you're living among people. There's got to be give and take. If she can't handle a bit of noise from neighbours let her sell up and piss off somewhere like North Yorkshire, Devon or the Scottish highlands where the next neighbour is miles away.
bonkerz1888@reddit
Pie her off, she sounds like a knob who can't be reasoned with. You're not doing anything wrong.
PoppySkyPineapple@reddit
Not your problem, they could have easily found your floor plan online, or knocked and asked, before putting their bedroom next to your living room.
Forceptz@reddit
She's gonna have to do some more work to sound proof her bedroom then, isn't she? She also can't complain to the council about ordinary noise. If a council officer ever comes around or sends a letter about statutory nuisance, tell them where to go.
willcodefordonuts@reddit
First step is invest in a nice mechanical keyboard. When you look for one you want “clacky” switches. It should give you the feel of a good typewriter.
Beyond that you stop trying to be super quiet all the time. You’re well within your rights to be in your house and type at whatever time you want.
Watch tv / listen to music / talk to people. Just don’t be loud late at night. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do things.
And if they complain tell them it’s tough
Nox_VDB@reddit
I'm petty enough to start playing music without headphones if someone said that to me, especially after months of renovation torture.
You're not in the wrong at all.

I live in a terrace and had pretty much the same issues. New family moved in next door after my old neighbour sadly passed away. All I hear all freaking day is her screaming and shouting obscenities at her kids and Mr and yet, if my kids have their TV on higher than vol 6, she's knocking on the door like we haven't been hearing her scream at her hubby about him being a lazy bastard all day 🤷♀️😂 I just give her the eye roll and close the door. Not interested. If she wants to get the council involved she can because I know I'm not doing anything out of normal acceptable noise levels (trust me, I stay up to date with decibel limits in my area since she moved in 😂)

Desperate_Goose_4946@reddit
No you are not wrong. Your neighbour has most likely not thought to do anything about soundproofing. When one changes their residence as they have, they should have used several layers of soundproofing plaster board on the party wall. It is not your fault that they have now put a bedroom there. I personally would contact your local council building control with everything you have stated here. Good luck.

They can pay to sound proof both sides of that party wall. They can also pay to have noise-level monitoring equipment setup on both sides to provide reference levels of noise.
Beyond that if they are an interfering with your quiet enjoyment then you can seek court action, like an ASBO. And you can say that because you are just living quietly within the law if they want something different to happen they can bear the burden of making those changes.
