I am hoping to sit my family down this Xmas and try to share all of the new data that has been coming in over the past few years in regards to climate change. They are fully on board and have taught me my entire life to take care of the planet, but I do not believe they fully understand how things have taken a dramatic turn for the worse lately with all of the new climate data coming out. Does anyone have a great 'presentation' showing the original predictions from 10-15 years ago vs where we actually are at today?
After the US election, it is pretty clear that we need to start becoming a little more self-sufficient, and we have a tiny plot of land I want to start a permaculture farm on. I feel like we have heard about this impending climate crisis for so long that even people that are aware out there are having the 'frog in boiling water' effect essentially leaving us paralyzed to take action. Help me convince them that shit is REALLY about to hit the fan!
EDIT: Feel free to include anything not just about climate, but social, economic, pandemic factors as well.

Holy shit…. This is the arc I have been looking for. thank you!!!!

NPR, PBS and NASA. Not very deep, but definitely tailored for just this sort of thing.

Al Gore should make a sequel.
gardening_gamer@reddit
I was about to exclaim "there already was a recent sequel!" and then looked it up and realised even that came out 7 years ago.

Haven't looked at this in several months. Have we entered La Nina, or we never going to see those again?

The British newspaper, The Guardian, has had the best coverage on the environment/climate change for over a decade...here's a link to their Environmental section.
Here's a link to an article from the NYT:

The Climate Extremes documentary is available on youtube (also features Johan Rockström). Seen it recommended in one of the videos from Just Have a Think

Also, here is something really interesting from way back in 2003: Surplus - Terrorized into Being Consumers, a documentary film on consumerism and globalization and their destructive sides. It's done in an innovative style that is more "show, don't tell", somewhat reminiscent of Baraka.
Kind of like a precursor to the climate collapse documentaries, it shows the human mentality that has led us to where we are. I haven't seen it in years myself.

Don't bother. Most old people realize deep inside it's fucked but they cognitive dissonance themselves into some dumb excuse.

Could you make a small update after the fact? I would love to read about their reactions and thoughts.

Will do, hopefully I can put everything together in one nice little folder

If you want to convince your family to farm I would try to make it about fun and health rather than surviving this shit storm
bipolarearthovershot@reddit
You could also try learning about RCP8.5 from the AR6 what it would mean and see Peter carters YouTube update about how we are tracking worse case. Tbh adaptation seems pointless even the indiginous people’s are emerging from their jungles they built with no food
bipolarearthovershot@reddit
Google the busy workers guide to the apocalypse…it’s about 78 pages I think. I’d also recommend you read deep adaptation and summarize for them.

I know this may not be the answer you were looking for, but I feel like maybe it might be more useful: Focus on your end goal. What do you want to have happen at the end of this conversation? What is the purpose of all of giving them this information? I'm assuming you are having this conversation for a reason as in there is some specific outcome you want them to achieve or action you want them to take. If this conversation is coming down to, "Hey, look how fucked we are!" then it's probably not going to turn our like you'd want, because you are bringing a problem to the table, not a solution.
But if this conversation is, "I'd like to invest the time, energy, and money into turning this plot of land into a permaculture farm and I need your help," then the more convincing argument isn't going to be about decreasing returns on global investment in energy extraction, rising sea-surface temperatures, an increase in extreme weather events, and melting glaciers in the Andes. Instead focus on what the particulars or your plan are and what specifically you are asking of them. You don't need to go into the why and do an hour long powerpoint presentation on James Hansen's research over the last 50 years, but you do need to connect your vision with their lives. If they are worried that everything is getting crazier in the world, then your objective is to give them a sense of security, and here's how your vision will achieve that. If they value independence, lean into their experience from the COVID pandemic supply chain and energy shocks that resulted from that and the invasion of Ukraine which led to inflation and goods disappearing from shelves. If they value a connection to the environment, build up that idea of creating a flourishing ecosystem that nourishes you, your family, and the local ecosystem and that even if you can't change the world you can do this one thing in this one place for you and yours to make a difference in your own lives. If they are more entrepreneurial, sell them on it as an investment in the future due to placing most costs upfront whereas inflation will continue making food more expensive into the future, and that the excess that can't be used or stored could be sold in a farmer's market or an online marketplace. Tailor your evidence to the argument you are making and tailor your argument to what you are asking of them.
So just to reiterate, give them a vision, give them an outline of the plan, connect that vision to their own lives and values, explain how this idea will benefit them, then give them the ask. You don't need to sell them on the impending collapse of global civilization, you can have those conversations while planting blueberry bushes on your new permaculture farm, but you do need them to take a chance on your leadership in this idea.
And that's the real subtext here. You're selling your ability to lead them though with this vision to a better tomorrow, because this is your idea, your vision, your baby, and you have to own it. If you can't convince them of that, then they aren't going to take the chance on you. If you can't be confident in how this is all going to work and be able to address their questions, issues, and reservations, they won't follow your lead. If you can't take this on, or you can't take the lead, then there's your ask: having someone else carry your vision... and that's a big ask.

Very good advice and I could not agree more! I suppose my motivation for wanting to do this is to just help them understand, both of my parents are actually really aware and one of them is one of the worlds leading energy scientists, he has devoted his entire life trying to get the world off petroleum. My folks are in their early 80s and may not be around for too much longer, so I feel their sense of urgency to do something may be tapering off.
My brother and his wife, however do not seem to be all that worried. My brother has shared with me that because he has kids he just has to stay positive for them, which is understandable.
I suppose you could say my desired outcome would be for my family to support me in this Permaculture endeavor, as opposed to writing off everything I say as being a doomer. Raising chickens and potatoes may not be glorious, but at least we will have something on the table in 10 years. And in all honesty all the work I am doing will not be for myself, but rather the generation to follow.
PlausiblyCoincident@reddit
Well, when your plans bear fruit (literally in this case), I'm sure they'll get more on board and be supporting even if they don't wholly agree with you. I wish you the best of luck.

Buy yourself a copy of the January 1986 Discover magazine.
Not much has changed, all the charts are still relevant.
TLDR: There's little point to updating any of it, it all laid out the future we have denied and now we are here and going faster. It's worse than any of the charts depicted.

I tried doing the same a few months ago when I visited family in the summer, but realized there is not much point and most people will not want to talk about it, let alone make big lifestyle changes, which will be futile anyway. It is a survivalist fantasy. Just live in the now and enjoy what is left. Read this and have them read it. Sure, you could maybe buy some time but it won’t last very long.

Indeed, even if we were to build a functional farm to feed ourselves it’s just a matter of time until we would need medicine, equipment for repairs, etc.
I suppose it’s just the only thing I feel like I can do right now to have a sporting chance.

"Breaking Boundaries" on Netflix is pretty good, it's basically Johan Rockström's TedTalk about planetary boundaries narrated by David Attenborough.
Rockström's about as alarmist as mainstream will allow, and he's a tad optimistic for my taste because of this, but he's a good communicator anyway.
