It sure is rich seeing this article simp for Bhutan and how they prioritize the people and culture after forcing out a large chunk of its population for being different. I guess Bhutan's leadership is realizing that people prefer money over a fake facade of happiness built off ethnic clensing.

Even stranger is the fact they did it in the name of “protecting Buddhism”, seeing as bigotry and violence are such massive slaps in the face to some of the most core values it teaches.
TherronKeen@reddit
Sounds like the exact path we're on here in the US. :(

Bhoutan is a theological dictature of one of the worst kind. They have a good past of ethnic cleansing. The king and mostly the reigning clique keep the people in ignorance (education is free but they won't teach you much). Power is strictly given by hereditary right (what a nice democracy). Internet and most international way of communicating is forbidden, even the clergy that was not compliant with the king's clique was purged.
The only thing is that due to their heavy geographic isolation they never thought about locking the borders as it use to no be necessary. People are now fleeing the country en masse. I bet they are getting ready to lock the country much like north Korea or any hard-dictature.

I think comparing Bhutan to NK is a bit much
Banas_Hulk@reddit
Gross domestic happiness” lol. Bhutan engaged in ethnic cleansing of at least 100,000 Lhotsampas in the late ‘80s and early‘90s. These people, who used to be public servants, school teachers, farmers, and merchants, languished in squalid refugee camps in Nepal for decades before being resettled elsewhere. So, no, Bhutan doesn’t get to complain about people leaving in droves.
What’s heartbreaking is that many Bhutanese refugees still love the country that hates them, and proudly call themselves Bhutanis.
9oooooooooooj@reddit
Fun they also paid indian ethnic militias to do a lot of their dirty work during the cleansing
HighDelulu@reddit
"Indian" is not an ethnicity.
PierreFeuilleSage@reddit
It is if people identify with it or others identify them as such.
9oooooooooooj@reddit
I didn't mean indian as an ethnicity
I meant different ethnic and separatist groups from the country of India, specifically those involved in the north east insurgency
HighDelulu@reddit
That's right, thank you.
sivavaakiyan@reddit
Your delulu doesn't seem as high
HighDelulu@reddit
My delusion is related to the optimistic future of mine.
sivavaakiyan@reddit
Oh...
How's your view on the future for the world in general
GallorKaal@reddit
That is unironically admirable
Ted-The-Thad@reddit
Yeah well, not going to see the US State Department complaining about this because Bhutan is not China.
roydez@reddit
And that was 40% of the population which was never allowed to return and who are legally segregated and denied citizenship. The article pretends like they don't exist...
It's revolting how this propagandizes Bhutan as this paradise where they measure "gross national happiness" and where "democracy was bestowed on the people by a benevolent king." And other bullshit. Reminds me of these "made the desert bloom" people.
GallorKaal@reddit
This is r/anime_titties. Who cares about genocide when it's done by the 'victors'
gravygrowinggreen@reddit
It's amazing how much the article whitewashes it. The citizenship laws that make it difficult for people who lived in Bhutan to actually continue to live there still exist. The government still wants to maintain a "cultural identity". And yet the article paints Bhutan as this tiny but progressive country.
LandOFreeHomeOSlave@reddit
Its quite possible that they could create a sustainable "pipeline" of young western immigrants, desperate to escape their own nations' social and spiritual unhappiness.
wintrmt3@reddit
Who exactly wants to emigrate into abject poverty? The buthanese gdp per ca is 3000 dollars. (That's significantly worse than Ukraine or Moldova)
LandOFreeHomeOSlave@reddit
People who care less about money than happiness?
I know plenty of hippie like folk who moved to SEAsia or CSAmerica, at least for a while. My eldest brother has lived and worked in Vietnam for 40 years and i cant imagine their GDP is far off Bhutans.
GolDAsce@reddit
That's a dream to be making a western salary in a developing economy. Live like a 1%.
wintrmt3@reddit
But it's total bullshit, the last time they let Gallup measure it (in 2013), they had a really mediocre result. This hole happiness is thing is a meme to make a dead king happy, who didn't want to answer that "our gdp/ca is slightly above $200" (back in the early 70s).
PEKKAmi@reddit
This.
Western nation inundated with asylum seekers should strike a deal with Bhutan. It is cheaper for these countries to pay Bhutan to take these people than it is to pay for their social welfare living in western nations. Bhutan gets income and population boost in return.
For those truly seeking asylum in the spirit of what asylum is suppose to be for, these people should be happy to live in a country where their happiness matters. We’ll, that and they stay alive if they are truly in fear of persecution back home.
Banas_Hulk@reddit
What makes you think that a country that expelled more than a hundred thousand of its own people because they looked different, spoke a different language, and celebrated a different culture would want to take in refugees from other places?
bfhurricane@reddit
Southeast Asia and Central/South America are far more culturally tied to the west than Bhutan, and they also have more developed tourism industries. English is also taught as a secondary language in many of these countries, so you can get by without too many hurdles.
I don’t know much about Bhutan, but there’s a reason most people who want to “get off the grid” and go find themselves tend to do it in places with nice weather and amenities while still being affordable. I can’t imagine too many people choose Bhutan over Costa Rica or Thailand.
One-Season-3393@reddit
They weren’t living on 3000 dollars a year, the only people who would move there would be digital nomads. But I don’t think you’re gonna get a bunch of tech bros to move to Bhutan.
xGentian_violet@reddit
They would destroy the country.
reality_hijacker@reddit
I kind of doubt that it is only related to "prioritizing happiness". Moving to western countries from Europe has gotten much easier in recent years, with much easier access to information through the internet. More people people are moving abroad from most poorer countries like India, Vietnam etc.
motguss@reddit
I don’t get the sense most people are capable or willing to google even simple questions
brianundies@reddit
The article itself said that even menial labor jobs in Australia paid better than anything people could reasonably find in Bhutan. Easy to see why young people are leaving in droves.
Gyrestone91@reddit
Shit they want to trade places?
