Left Lane Hogs - What Can Be Done?

I'm sure this topic has been covered. I get outraged at people hanging out in the left lane on the highway.
Some people are just stubborn and cannot be convinced that the left lane is not for just hanging out in.
But some don't know. Esp new drivers in America. None of my uber drivers seem to know.
Is there anything can be done to get the word out that the left lane is not to hang out in, and you should move over if someone is coming behind you going faster?
op3l@reddit
Why bother, just pass them on the right and get on with your day.
Younger people mostly don't treat driving as a privilege anymore and it's just part of the daily grind so they don't care about it.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Because it's dangerous, wrong, and creates expectations.
Stolles@reddit
People calling the left lane the fast lane also has created a danger, it's wrong and also created an expectation. People will literally argue about passing on the right being illegal so they don't want to do it, but they feel fine going 15mph over in the "fast lane" to pass you when that's just as illegal.
Bman847@reddit
The speed limit is an arbitrary creation in America. It's one of the few countries that actually has limits from the 1950s. Embarrassing. You people really are SLOW
Stolles@reddit
I'd reconsider who you're calling "slow" I have more professional driver training in my pinky than you have had in your entire life.
Limits are based on the roads and conditions, not how fast or slow your car is, cars from the 50s could still reach 65-100mph.
Guess what, my state is changing the speed limits in 15 different areas and making it 5mph SLOWER than it was set at.
How embarrassing.
Bman847@reddit
They're making it slower because it's based on the 85th percentile, from traffic increase and constant lane clogging from left lane hogs. Again. This is not an issue anywhere else except your country. Nowhere else would they slow traffic on a 7 lane highway, other than America LOL.
Stolles@reddit
Left lane hogs, acting as if that's just a universal law when it's not 🤣
I wasn't even talking about highways and no, they aren't making it slower because of whatever reason you think, there is literally an article that talks about the reductions and why they were doing it for each area.
By and large we have lower speed limits and reductions in speed limit because it's safer than zooming everywhere going 80. It's crazy when you have an understanding of physics 😄
Bman847@reddit
durrr go slow mean safeerrrrr
nope. autobahn. safer than literally any USA highway. Moscow Highway 1, same thing. Any highway in the EU. Any highway in southeast asia. ameridumbbbb DUURRR GO SLOW IS FASTERRRRRRRRRRRR
Stolles@reddit
God you just seem intent on being insufferable and ignorant.
Let me see if I have the crayons to dig out to explain this to you since it seems like you didn't move past 4th grade or want to talk like an adult.
I train drivers professionally, I was trained by a major car company and my local PD. We work on new prototype vehicles on one of the largest testing sites in the country, we test various vehicles over many different tracks at varying speeds and with varying levels of safety equipment, some vehicles are barebones.
Speed has a very direct relation to fatality in a car crash. If you're going 50mph, you'll have a greater risk of dying than if you were going 20mph, that's just a fact of physics because it's the sudden stop that kills you (ignoring things like being crushed or impaled or flying out of the car)
A higher speed also means you have less time to react to hazards in the road if they suddenly appear. We shouldn't be operating constantly on the edge of human reflexes. This is irresponsible and just plain dumb when the difference is getting to a destination a minute or two early. An entire lifetime is not worth 1-2 minutes. Even getting pulled over costs much more time.
Now the Autobahn, it only has SOME areas with unrestricted speed, those are usually straight and or rural areas, it's not the entire autobahn.
Now let's talk qualifications. strict driver training standards, well-maintained roads with minimal traffic disruptions, a culture of disciplined driving, and the design of the roads themselves is what makes the autobahn less dangerous than your typical American highway.
In Germany, you are required to take tons of driving lessons, including several where you’re taken on the actual Autobahn and put into real, high-speed traffic. Drivers must receive basic first aid training and on top of that, you still have an incredibly difficult multiple choice exam and the road test.
All of this can take up to six months to finish up, if it’s all done successfully and it could cost over $2,000, compare that to my state where the license cost is $25 and you can take the test in a couple days after passing a written test in which you just study a book, the road test is a drive around the block and then a 3 point turn test, in some states you have to parallel park, in my state, you do not.
If you want to drive in Germany you need to be dedicated, which makes for better drivers. And better drivers means fewer accidents, fewer accidents means fewer deaths: Germany has far fewer motor vehicle related fatalities (per 100,000 people) than the US.
They keep the road on the autobahn repaired and maintained FAAAAR better than even the average American road, let alone highways that are constantly under the worst construction. A very populated highway in my area has had construction going on for Years and the road is so messed up, if you don't know how to navigate the road or your vehicle, the lines and divots left in the wake of the construction will literally grab your vehicle tire and yank you in a direction.
Left lane for passing is strictly enforced, where in America, not only is it not enforced, it's not the law everywhere.
Vehicle maintenance is also a much higher standard in Germany than in America, so cars that are on the road have less problems or risk of becoming a sudden problem and causing a wreck.
They also have higher penalties for tailgating. Here, if you're not tailgating someone else you're "impeding traffic" literally just ask on this sub and you'll see how many Americans' reinforce this idea that the only way to drive "proper" is to do the dumbest and most unsafe things on the road because in their mind, the least time spent on the road, the safer you are, but that's only true without context. If everyone drove safe and didn't make the road a hazard for someone else, we wouldn't have nearly an issue.
Again like I said, a large part of our fatalities is because we are less trained/educated on driving overall and because we think we're so great an individualized, we think we can speed anywhere we want because we have an over inflated sense of skill until suddenly your car loses traction and you have no idea how to control a drive tire spinout before it gets worse.

I have driven for an hour on the right lane of a three lane freeway at the speed limit in cruise control and passed literally hundreds of cars on the left and center lane. I appreciate “its dangerous, wrong” and possibly illegal but if a single driver decides to drive below the speed limit in the leftmost lane, are you suggesting that they should be allowed to control the speed and capacity of the entire freeway?
Dry-Test-5539@reddit
Another thing, if they enjoy the left lane, why would they get over? Unless there's certain things making it unsafe, Virginia, the state that I live in, allows passing on the right.
Texasscot56@reddit
“Enjoy the left lane”? What does that mean? If your state allows anyone to use any lane at any time at any speed, and allows passing in any lane, good luck to you. I can assure you it is not like that in 99% of the civilized world.
Dry-Test-5539@reddit
No. I'm just saying that if they are going same lane, oblivious to their behavior, then they wouldn't be likely to change their behavior anytime soon. I'm not condoning their behavior.
Bman847@reddit
Then they need to be FORCED to move. Every other country can figure this out Ameridumbs are the only losers on the planet who can't figure this concept out. Embarrassing
Astarrrrr@reddit (OP)
Passing on the right is dangerous and many states it's illegal.
It also just needlessly blocks the flow of traffic. I've been in super dense traffic and gone several lanes to get around only to see one car just hanging out doing 60 with 15 cars behind it.
op3l@reddit
Yep. I've also noticed that and they are a direct cause of traffic chaos and jams. But what can you do? Ram them off the lane? Nope. So you pass on the right and get on with your day.
Also yea it's illegal but unless you make it super janky no one's going to care.
Bman847@reddit
Typical American mindset. DURRR WE CANT DO IT UNLIKE EVERYONE ELSE
DonkeyKickBalls@reddit
Alot of the left lane campers here in DMV area (mostly Virginia) believe theyre in the right to travel any lane if they drive the speed limit.
Thing is a majority of them are very oblivious and lack spacial awareness.
The only thing one can do is weave around them.
moistdragons@reddit
Am I the only one who just sits back and accepts my fate if both lanes are blocked ? I live in Va, I don’t camp but interstate 81 is full of semis passing each other at 0.1mph faster than the other one and I see people piling up behind each other, weaving in and out of traffic desperately trying to get around in front, tailgating everyone in front of them, even semi trucks. Meanwhile if I’m tryin go to pass and I get blocked by a slow left lane driver then I switch to the right lane and wait until something opens up.
I never get mad or impatient, I just accept my fate. Aggressive, impatient, impulsive drivers are the ones who cause accidents not the left lane campers
Bman847@reddit
Well if slow traffic kept right, traffic would flow, further decreasing issues of unsafe driving. This is basic science and is proven to work in the EU, with WAAAY less fatalities, crashes, and higher speeds
moistdragons@reddit
I get that but also if people acted appropriately to being slowed down then it would also decrease all of these problems. Instead of trying desperately to pass the two cars blocking each other and getting pissed off and making dangerous lane changes then they could just sit back, keep a safe distance and wait for a safe opening but instead most drivers tailgate and make unsafe lane changes.
Bman847@reddit
Typical American attitude again. Left lane people no accelerating need to IMMEDIATELY move over
moistdragons@reddit
Ok? I didn’t say they didn’t. I just said the bigger problem is the impatient f*cks who can’t handle being slowed down for a few seconds and start driving erratically because of it.
Bman847@reddit
theyre not slowed down for a few seconds. theyre slowed down for minutes while the clueless driver doesnt move over. they should see cars accellerating behind them and react accordingly
Objective-Angle9952@reddit
Learn patience and go around them when safe. Anything else would make you a bad driver.
Bman847@reddit
Nah You stupid Americans don't know anything. The bad driver is the one blatantly being rude, camping in the left
BaldDudePeekskill@reddit
I was doing 86 mph on a 65 mph road today in NJ. I was absolutely NOT hogging the left lane. However the idiot behind me wanting to do 95 thought so and was on my tail to go even faster. I was 21 above the speed limit!
I of course then went 65. He went around me. Oh well
Bman847@reddit
You are an extremely american person. In any other country, you'd have respect enough to speed up temporarily and get out of the way
