This meal was easily less than $0.75. Times are tough man.

keep0ut1969@reddit
Potatoes, they’re what’s for dinner. I would have roasted the onion too.
starocean2@reddit
Cant ever go wrong with baked, roasted, or fried potatoes.
NiceGuysFinishLast@reddit
Could also boil 'em. Mash 'em. Stick 'em in a stew.
Nixxatronic@reddit
Could also knead ‘em into a dough. Stick ‘em in a sock. Use ‘em as a sock mace.
FoldyHole@reddit
I like to put them in my ass.
Peter_B_ParkinTicket@reddit
I also like to put them in your ass
greenbastard1591@reddit
go_commit_die-_-@reddit
I can confirm (I'm the potato)
ndpugs@reddit
Ill hash them browns.
Accomplished-Lime472@reddit
If they're new you could make your own potato gun!
jvLin@reddit
sock mace wasn't where I thought you were going with the sock
what has reddit done to me
kiriyama3@reddit
What's taters, Precious?
greenbastard1591@reddit
SuperSalad_OrElse@reddit
No you ruinses it!
Calm-Conference9884@reddit
Boiled, mashed, hashed🤣 I love potatoes 🥔 lol, we forget frenched
gukinator@reddit
Potato skins, potato flakes, hash browns, and instant flakes, baked or broiled, or french fried. There's no kind you cannot try
I_might_be_weasel@reddit
Exceptional work for those budget constraints.
greenbastard1591@reddit
WhereDidMyBallsackGo@reddit
Diogenes would approve
Xex051@reddit
Recommend checking out Kroger for clearance stuff sometimes. The one near me usually has $1 mushrooms which are nice for extra food
Caramel_Chicken_65@reddit
Looks good! l am gonna whip up some cabbage & bacon with Jasmine rice tonight.
Idefkbud@reddit
Girlfriend makes this couple times a month but she uses salt pork. It's delicious
QweenOfTheCrops@reddit
People really sleep on tofu. Is a cheap ass protein and it’s really good if you cook it right. I’m not vegetarian or anything but I eat it a lot. Just press it, chop it into squares and toss it in seasoning and air fry/ bake it and it’s bomb. 1 block of tofu is like $1 and it’s enough for 2 meals
mauriceta@reddit
tofu has 8g/100g protein... chicken breast 31g/100g not worth for me
SosZilla95@reddit
I don’t know why you’re being downvoted for the truth lol
CzechHorns@reddit
I just looked, and Tofu is sold for the same price as chicken breasts on sale here ($5/kg).
just-the-choco-tip@reddit
Might depend where you are. I don’t think I’ve seen chicken breast at $5/kg in Canada in a long time. Even on sale its usually about $7-8 for 0.5 kg. To be fair though, Canadian food prices are totally fucked.
CzechHorns@reddit
Czech Republic, stuff may be like 30% cheaper here, but salaries are 1/3-1/4 of the US/Canada
mechanized-robot@reddit (OP)
Nice 😊 my family is from Czechoslovakia, both sides. I’ve been lucky to spend bits of the last two summers in both countries with family. My grandma’s side of the family is from Usti nad Labem.
just-the-choco-tip@reddit
I was in Ostrava visiting my family this time last year! I would expect tofu to be pricier because it’s sorta niche there. It’s cheap af where I live because it’s cheap to make and flies off the shelf. I don’t know a single vegetarian Czech so my guess is the demand for it is lower? Who knows!
AleutJack@reddit
Baked tofu is the sh*t. Honestly, vegetarianism isn't so bad.
Jeramy_Jones@reddit
I make something similar called “poor man’s meal” it’s from the Great Depression and consists of chopped potatoes and onions and hotdogs (I usually use sausage or bacon) tossed in some oil and seasoning and baked until done.
SosZilla95@reddit
And I used to love watching her. Sad she passed 🥺
SosZilla95@reddit
I love fried potatoes with onions, some Cajun sausage and cheese 🤤
Okoear@reddit
Throw some curds cheese and gravy and you got a killer poutine!
Briansunite@reddit
Kalbasa sausage is the way to go
SpicyBoorito94@reddit
Thank you for sharing Clara’s video, I absolutely love her and when clicking the link was hoping it would lead to one of her videos. RIP Clara
ValuableMiddle378@reddit
In one of her videos for mushrooms, she said you can put a quarter in while cooking the mushrooms if you didn't know what kind they were from picking them in the wild. If the quarter changed color they were posion. Wonder how well that actually works or if it's still pretty risky.
Jeramy_Jones@reddit
It’s supposed to work with a pice of silver, which modern coins aren’t, but as far as I know it’s a myth and doesn’t actually work at all, or at least not reliably.
BuffTee@reddit
I could listen to her say “pataytuz” all day
BrazilianButtCheeks@reddit
Well its my depression era. Can i get a bowl? 😂
RedditTeachMeToAdult@reddit
I also like to make this but I swap the hotdogs for Kielbasa.
hokeypokey59@reddit
I loved watching Clara.. so sad when she passed. We loved "poor man's meal".
Sandor_ser@reddit
Oh, I didn't know it had a name. My mom used to make this It's the best
dankhimself@reddit
"Next step is ta cube da patatas."
She definitely knows her food. Thbaks for the link.
Waaterfight@reddit
I would smash
cfig99@reddit
Can’t go wrong with potatoes
BJntheRV@reddit
What's the soup? Is it soup? What's in the bowl?
Affectionate_Arm1978@reddit
I thought it was hot sauce or some kind of sauce and sour cream for dipping the potatoes in but maybe I’m wrong.
Perfumedgenuis@reddit
I’m thinking tomato soup with a lil cream we need intel
BJntheRV@reddit
The top comment being about tofu definitely has me scratching my head.
MacMurka@reddit
Onions go very well with potatoes
chalkman@reddit
Those potatoes look perfectly roasted tho. A meal fit for a king in my estimation.
bistichual@reddit
Nothing shitty here. How do you get that crust on the potatoes?
mechanized-robot@reddit (OP)
Toss them in oil 👌 I bake at 400 F for about 30 minutes and then broil for a bit.
Miserable-Power-9404@reddit
how humans are supposed to eat anyway. whole foods not bad
H0TSaltyLoad@reddit
Crack an egg on there and you have one of my favourite meals
thedreadcat666@reddit
Was thinking this. Bauernfrühstück (farmers breakfast) in German, great way to use up leftover onion and potato
Aware-Marsupial-5374@reddit
All that it needs is water pie from the same time and you're eating good 👍
ConvenientOcelot@reddit
Looks good. Off-topic but what keyboard is that?
mechanized-robot@reddit (OP)
Lofree Flow with the Ghost switches! Low profile and phenomenal. POM switches so they feel buttery smooth, pretty close to feeling lubed.
King_of_the_Goats@reddit
Question about the keyboard.
Not actually, what’s in the cup? What spices? It looks good.
ConvenientOcelot@reddit
Thanks. Looks really nice. Loved the low profile look which is why I asked.
badchefrazzy@reddit
Sorry, I will never see roasted potatoes as shitty food. I love potatoes in all forms except when they're cut too thin and fried and then cooled, where they turn plasticky and unchewable. Then I -hate- potatoes.
jokersush1@reddit
A restaurant would charge like $7 for those potatoes they look good
Echo-Azure@reddit
A current fave meal is a bowl of congee, which costs about five cents, topped with a poached or soft-boiled egg, some chopped scallions, maybe a sliced fresh mushroom. That can't cost more than fifty cents.
toowandaaa@reddit
Is that a mix of ranch and buffalo?
Maeggykins@reddit
Good breakfast! Potatoes, onions and spicy salsa. Yum
spyemil@reddit
That looks very good
llmercll@reddit
You should go on food stamps I eat steak and shrimp all the time
Escaflowne8@reddit
I love air frying potatoes. Did the red onions go good with it? Also the heck is in that sauce?
Toolb0xExtraordinary@reddit
It looks like ranch and some kind of gravy or barbecue sauce idk
Pete3382@reddit
Nothing beats roast potatoes
rosaryrattler@reddit
tough times never last. only tough people last.
doomandgloomm@reddit
This looks absolutely delicious!!! Onion and potatoes are always a staple in our house hold, especially when money's very tight!
hokeypokey59@reddit
I really recommend Julia Pacheco's channel on YouTube. She has 100s of easy, budget friendly, and delicious recipes on her channel with easy instructions for all types of cooking... stove top, crock pot, oven. She gives alternate ingredients for some items you may not have in stock or care for.
Here are a couple of samples. Also, try your local food pantry for staples to keep on hand. This time of year they get lots of food donations. Good luck.

mechanized-robot@reddit (OP)
That’s a good idea 👍 . I’ll definitely do that next time.
Academic-Map-1035@reddit
It looks so yummy tbh
CuriousSecret2955@reddit
This actually looks so delicious. I’d add some cheese or something too. Hang in there
Obiwantoblowme@reddit
That is an admirable meal friend
ditlit11134@reddit
What's in the cup?
decisiontoohard@reddit
Relatable. What's in the ramekin?
QueenAzshara@reddit
My guess is ranch and hot sauce
AloneFirefighter7130@reddit
I thought it was yoghurt and caramel sauce for dessert...
Fiko515@reddit

We're in this together, OP :) great work. Here's to better days ahead!!
FadedAlienXO@reddit
Wow. I pay 90 something cents for a singular potato.
cartercharles@reddit
Not bad, not bad at all
aDemonicTutor@reddit
A tasty and cost effective potato dish you should try is roasted garlic potatoes. Just need some yellow flesh potatoes and roasted garlic, though obviously better with butter
shaoOOlin@reddit
Wonderful meal
Zhaneranger@reddit
Food doesn’t have to be expensive to be healthy and delicious.
RainElectric@reddit
Sautéed or caramelized onions but absolutely would. Maybe an egg.
Hot-Tone-7495@reddit
I was broke and my mom bought me a bag of red potatoes. Made so many meals, I also had a couple different spices cuz I worked at a restaurant so no hate to this meal at all. Honestly I still eat these lol
ViciousCombover@reddit
Damn, you’ve even had to cut back on the numpad too.
In all seriousness it looks great. Doing the best with what you got.
sandpump@reddit
Looks better than what 80% of people Eat lol
mochiladecriancaa@reddit
Looks amazing, but please don't eat it over the keyboard
Double_Emphasis_7027@reddit
Thanking the poverty angels I have so much stockpiled pasta, spices, canned veggies and a mother who taught me how to cook. Meals are looking like this too most days!
trackdaybruh@reddit
Damn looks real good
Share recipe please, I’d eat it
Healthy_Broccoli1927@reddit
Looks pretty good for budget, real nice potatoes and you seasoned them. I'd have that with some lamb I think.
King_of_the_Goats@reddit
What’s the seasoning and the sauces? Cheap but looks good to me.
BeaglishJane@reddit
Idk what it is, but I’d eat it.
