Club rats of the 80s/90s

What's your favorite guilty pleasure that used to be in heavy rotation back in the day?
I have several but YouTube Music threw James Brown is Dead at me today while driving and I enjoyed it more than I care to admit. I might have even had a bit of a flashback, LOL.

All of these comments make me realize you are my people.
buthowshesaid@reddit (OP)
Been having that same thought myself. I still see my old core group of friends IRL but not nearly enough, and it's hard since 2 of us have died recently. Coming by this sub makes me feel like I still have a tribe.

May your friends rest in peace. Sorry for your loss.

Spin Spin Sugar (Armand’s Dark Garage Mix) - Sneaker Pimps

I went on a road trip with my 2 kids a few months ago. When it was my daughter's turn to drive and we switched Android Auto to her phone I was gobsmacked to find she had Spin Spin Sugar on her playlist. And a Bronski Beat remix!
ezgomer@reddit
This does my heart good. ❤️
It was definitely my “drop everything and get on the floor” song.
buthowshesaid@reddit (OP)
As it did mine.💙 Both my kids have their own interests but they genuinely love the same music I love. And sometimes they introduce me to cool new stuff that I'd otherwise never hear!

lol, I used to call the college radio station which had a broadcast range of basically the city limits and request that song. I would always tell them that I was on my way out of town but would live to hear that song before I got out of range. They would usually put songs in right away when you said that. It would not usually get to far past the word fuck in that first verse before they would stop the song and apologize for the song choice and the requesters poor sense of humor. Eventually they quit playing the song. My friend who was a DJ there said they put a post it note on the cd that said to never play that song from 7am-10pm. lol, thanks for triggering a memory.
buthowshesaid@reddit (OP)
That's awesome.🤣 I wonder if they would've played French Kiss by Lil Louis? No cursing there that I recollect.

Gen Z kid: Hey Mom, what was the most popular 242 song back in the day?
Me: Probably Welcome to Paradise or Headhunter. People ran to the dance floor when these songs were on, without fail. Good times.
Gen Z kid: So y'all danced to songs about poverty, religious hypocrisy, and human trafficking?
Me: Well...yeah.
Gen Z kid: That explains a lot.

Microchip League - New York/Communicate 12” is likely the mintiest 12” I own. Always a favorite of mine so I’ve babied it its whole life—gets lots of spin time.
buthowshesaid@reddit (OP)
My brain just played snippets of these songs for me as I read them. 😁
I still have all of my Front 242 on vinyl though my offspring keeps attempting to steal them from me.
sodandy@reddit
😁 I went out so much back then that those three songs are burned into my neurons. I don’t wear them out listening to them but when I do it’s like that old scene and energy comes drifting back lol.
Treasure your 242 vinyl! I still have some vinyl from the day but my trashy brother sold a lot of it in the 90s for cigarette money at the used record store 🫠
buthowshesaid@reddit (OP)
I felt that! I had a storage unit some years ago that got broken into, and they took a big screen TV, my new Dyson, some small appliances...and ALL OF MY CDs, including the rare/imports I had to hunt down at specialty record stores that are now defunct. It made me glad I kept my vinyl collection with me (which I did not because I thought anyone would want them, but because I didn't want them to melt).
So sorry about your vinyl.😢

Jesus Built My Hotrod-Ministry
Nemesis-Shriekback
happycj@reddit
The single I had for Jesus Built My Hot Rod has the same song on both sides, but the first side is just "Jesus Built My Hot Rod", and the second side is titled "Jesus Built My Hot Rod: Short, Pusillanimous, So-They-Can-Fit-More-Commercials-On-The-Radio Edit", which is of course the version we all know from the radio.

I joke about it because he's a teenager who is at that age where everything I do in public is "embarrassing". My kids and I have a joke between us regarding Doug E Fresh's The Show and he just about melted into a puddle when I rolled up playing that song at his school. I always tell him it could be so much worse, he could have someone like my dad (who actually was embarrassing) as a parent.

I still love the music but I can see where some of it might sound dated in a cheesy way, whereas I will argue to the death that The Cure sounds timeless.🤓
