First AMD GPU

Lately, I’ve felt like I’ve been limiting my gaming experience by having to lower settings just to get decent frame rates. So, I decided it was time to treat myself for once and saved up some money. Over the weekend, I mustered up the courage to visit Microcenter and finally upgrade to a decent mid-range GPU.
I’ve always been very frugal when it comes to building PCs, usually keeping my budget within the $300 range. This time, I was deciding between the XFX 7900 GRE and the Hellhound 7900 XT. Internally, I was still battling my frugal nature, hesitant to spend more on the 7900 XT. So, I left it to fate—since neither GPU was displayed in the glass case, I told the associate I’d prefer the GRE but would take the XT if the GRE wasn’t available.
Well, here we are, two days after purchasing the GRE, and I have no regrets about skipping the 7900 XT. The GRE fits nicely into my budget without breaking the bank, and I was even able to add a Microcenter warranty while still keeping the total cost equal to the XT’s price alone before taxes.
Installation was super easy after using DDU, and I haven’t run into any issues so far. The AMD Adrenalin software offers a lot of exciting features that I can’t wait to explore. For anyone on the fence about upgrading but hesitant to spend on an XT, I highly recommend the GRE. It seems to have an amazing value.
Now, I’m playing everything on ultra settings with exceptionally high frame rates. It’s such a relief to set my games to high or ultra without worrying about sacrificing visual quality just to maintain decent performance at 1440P.

I recently bought a base 4070, (so similar I think?) and damn is it crazy what I can do with it
Feels so good to finally treat yourself with something truly up there in performance, I hear ya.
se777enx3@reddit
7900XT is not similar to 4070
Stalbjorn@reddit
How is it not?
BadAdviceAI@reddit
AMD makes great GPUs. 80% of the GPU market thinks they are bad or somethingS. Its bonkers.
Neraxis@reddit
Chuds think DLSS/Frame Gen is somehow god's gift to earth. I've seen shit implementations of DLSS and FSR. Both are capable of being as good/bad as one another - signed an owner of a Ti Super.
f1rstx@reddit
updating DLSS version do wonders, try it one day before posting this nonsense again
KevDawg1992@reddit
You wouldn't have to worry about upscaling if your GPU is powerful enough to run native resolution. The 7800 XT isn't much more expensive than the 4060 Ti 16GB and runs laps around it. 7800 XT runs games better at native resolution than the 4060 Ti using DLSS.
f1rstx@reddit
there isn't a single GPU powerfull enough to run maxxed out games without DLSS at 4K, even 4090 is not powerful enough. Well, if you like "cinematic 24fps" - you do you.
Stalbjorn@reddit
You are just wrong.
KevDawg1992@reddit
Who said anything about 4K?
Mrcod1997@reddit
Generally speaking though, dlss is a better upscaler. Overall nvidia does have a pretty good feature set, but I do think that people overlook that amd has some nice stuff too. the adrenaline software is honestly a really nice interface on its own.
DMinTrainin@reddit
And 95% of reddit says to always get an AMD GPU
f1rstx@reddit
because they need to validate purchase of inferior product
StewTheDuder@reddit
Not validating shit. When I bought my 7900xt it was $100 cheaper than the regular 4070ti (super handy launched yet), it has 8+ GBs compared to the ti’s 12, and outperforms the ti in the majority of titles. I’ve had it for a year and a half now, was nvidia for 12 years before, and I actually prefer owning an AMD card over a Nvidia one. If AMDs FSR 4 is good and RT keeps getting better, I don’t plan on owning a Nvidia card ever again unless they give me a really good reason to. Also interested in what Intel is cooking up on the GPU front.
It isn’t some second class experience over here on AMD. In a lot of ways it’s better. In some it’s not. But overall I prefer the AMD experience.
f1rstx@reddit
Good for you
StewTheDuder@reddit
Thanks. I’m pretty happy about it
BadAdviceAI@reddit
The 7000 series are crazy good. Thats why most of us are scratching our heads. Given the current discounts, they are superior to Nvidia atm.
f1rstx@reddit
Noone bought it, so it seems it isn't as crazy good as it seems.
BadAdviceAI@reddit
The point is that marketing convinced people they weren’t good. People who own them are laughing all the way to the bank.
f1rstx@reddit
Or being overpriced while underdelivered performance compared to slides in a classic AMD fashion. Reviews were meh.
BadAdviceAI@reddit
I own both companies. AMD GPUs are solid. I generally go beat price/performance. AMD wins in that category.
Withinmyrange@reddit
Jensen Huang and Lisa Su fused!!!
Fit-Middle-5407@reddit
Thanks for posting this as I am trying to find a good GPU for my AMD 7600X3D bundle from Micro Center. I was looking at the same video cards.
IggyHitokage@reddit
If you haven't already, be sure to enable Resizable Bar/SAM in the BIOS, it'll generally improve performance further.
justa-Possibility@reddit
When you enable Sam also enable above 4G decoding, they work together
ForeverNo9437@reddit
And also the above 4g decoding feature.
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Noted will definitely do that
catalinashenanigans@reddit
Can you do this with any Radeon GPU? What does it do (besides improving performance)?
bunkermunken@reddit
Yes. You enable it in BIOS or IIRC in the driver front-end. It's likely already enabled but you should confirm it.
It enables the CPU to access bigger chunks (all?) of VRAM at once
I will send you an invoice for acting as a manual search engine 👉👉
Life_Sky_3578@reddit
Chunks above 4Gigabits or 512MB
Verme@reddit
Yup. This. I think it's one of the most important and gpu settings.

Word on what Iggy says.

I love it when people realize AMD gpus aren't nearly as bad as some people publicly portray them. I've been running whatever's most cost effective for the past ~25ish years. I've had a GT8600, a GT 250, A GTX 260 Core 216 (basically the ti model back then), a Radeon 5830, 6850, two 6950's, three 7970's, FOUR RX 290's (one time they were set up in triple crossfire), an R9 Fury, a GTX 1070, a GTX 1070ti, an RX 580, an RTX 2080 and since then I've been running a 6800XT.
That's just what I can remember. There were a handful of cards even before that, it's just been so long I can't remember.
AMD graphics cards, in my experience have nearly ALWAYS been solid, and if I'm honest I've had more trouble with Nvidia graphics cards over the years than AMD and you're right about the adrenaline software. It's awesome.
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Quite the list of past cards. Yeah, after this 7900 experience I may go full team red when it’s time to upgrade the CPU.
Repulsive_Meaning717@reddit
I also just got a GRE (first pc ever) and absolutely no regrets. It runs 1440p flawlessly, and apart from some minor stutters (mostly on Fortnite which is unoptimized trash and it’s only like once every 30 mins or something) it’s amazing. No regrets
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Nice! Glad you’re enjoying yours as well, congrats!
Tom_Der@reddit
Good choice, both Hellhound (Powercolor) and XFX are great manufacturers for AMD GPUs, my choice went to XFX just because the design with no RGB and pure black monolith looks really good.
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Good to know! I agree, the all black in my case now looks super clean.
Silveriovski@reddit
Thanks for sharing.
vaurapung@reddit
Just got my build together after several setbacks. Ended up returning half my Amazon purchases keeping only my psu, m.2s and hellhound 7900gre.
Getting the 7600x3d bundle at micro center saved me about 100 dollars and got me an upgraded cpu with tower cooler over my Amazon purchases that were doa.
Very pleased with the specs on the gre but not really sure if they will perform well on my big tv since I want 4k. I'm still having issues finding out how to force a computer to chroma subsample.
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Nice! I love those Microcenter bundles. Glad it ended up working out for you. From what I have seen and read the GRE is fairly capable at 4k.
vaurapung@reddit
At 4xs the power of my xbox series x I think it will be great. No man's sky is just the game I've been trying to use to compare the two platforms. And it seems to be very difficult to optimize on pc for someone new to pc gaming.
My next two big games to try out will my ms flight Sim and total War warhammer 3.
gigaplexian@reddit
Extra warranties are usually a scam or close to it. Why would you pay extra if you're on a budget?
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Never had an issue with MicroCenter and them standing by their warranties. Has saved me a couple times with various parts in my life time.
gigaplexian@reddit
It's more that you already get an implicit warranty so there's no point paying extra for another one.
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Okay thanks
svenska_aeroplan@reddit
Nice. I just made the same decision, but went 7900XT because I couldn't find a GRE in white.
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Awe dang, either way I’m sure you’re more than happy!
bunkermunken@reddit
Welcome to the club
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Thank you 🙏
NightGojiProductions@reddit
P.S., do what Iggy’s comment said. Also, the GRE is a hell of an overclocker, you can get a good amount more with some tampering
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Awesome, good to know I can OC a little.
maharbamt@reddit
Hey congrats! Happy for you. Getting an upgrade and having it work well is a great feeling.
Accomplished-Mud3904@reddit (OP)
Thank you! Pretty dang happy about it!
