Metastatic Modernity

Astrophysicist Tom Murphy's Metastatic Modernity series which is complete now and 18 parts, contextualizing modernity's/civilization's eventual failure. The information is synthesized in a fairly comprehensive way, maybe it would be a good addition to educational resources for this forum? Just a suggestion.

Great video series

Not surprised that this guy is an asshole. Lots of assholes have, over history, tried to use math to justify their assholedom.

Alright, excellent reason to unsubscribe. Maybe I'll read more books instead of dealing with all inane "overshooters" who think that capitalism's rat race is human nature.

Your comment was caught up in a sweep of comments throwing abuse at other users; it was a genuine mistake on our part and your comment has now been restored.
Sorry about that.

Ad hominem = logical fallacy
dumnezero@reddit
It wasn't an argument. I don't upvote or listen to fascists. He's the kind of guy who celebrates fossil fuel use --- FOR AN EXCLUSIVE MINORITY --- while the rest are supposedly gone.
There are lots of assholes in the world who solve The Predicament, the equation, by demanding that the population is "reduced" so that the remaining ones have more resources and environment to exploit. That's fascism.
TotalSanity@reddit (OP)
Tom Murphy has never said anything like that, though he's pointed out the unsustainability of fossil fuels and how we are in ecological overshoot.
But like you said, you haven't listened to him so I guess you're just ignorant.
dumnezero@reddit
I have and I've read lots of his articles. Like this old one:
https://dothemath.ucsd.edu/2011/11/peak-oil-perspective/
Like many other "peak oilers", his concern is with the lack of oil, not with the "lifestyle".
https://dothemath.ucsd.edu/2013/09/the-real-population-problem/
https://dothemath.ucsd.edu/2012/02/the-alternative-energy-matrix/
It's not stated clearly, he's no Trump. This is part of the ideology of capitalists, modeling how BAU can go on at the cost of... everyone else.

"Keeping modernity powered by any means will basically maintain ecological pressures beyond the breaking point, to our own ultimate peril." - From this series.
"Money is an amoral system that misses a lot of very important pieces that doesn't have any real long-term vision, so when you make decisions based on money, which is 99.9% of the decisions that are made in this world it seems, you're going to have bad decisions."
Tom isn't a capitalist, he is sitting there with the lights off in this series to conserve energy and made his book Energy and Human Ambitions on a Finite Planet available for free, intentionally to avoid monetizing, he's into Ecological Economics.
Again, you're ignorant.
dumnezero@reddit
He failed to say the important parts out loud. Omission is important, he should know that if he knows math, as it's a huge variable in the equation.
TotalSanity@reddit (OP)
And specifically what are you referring to?
dumnezero@reddit
You want me to point you to what's missing from his discourse, from his worldview even? He's a math nerd; I'm not going to waste my time with a math nerd who ignores the giant X variable in the room in his models and ideas. That's my entire point, he's describing BAU from inside BAU, it's his world model.
TotalSanity@reddit (OP)
So you can't say what he isn't saying? Lol you're a troll.
dovercliff@reddit
Speaking of playing the man and not the ball; you've done that multiple times in this chain.
Don't do that. It's a against Rule 1. And you've been here long enough to know that.
ProximtyCoverageOnly@reddit
Thanks for your comment, I'll be passing on the post. More and more I find myself having to be wary of zionists/fascists speaking on the topic of collapse and overshoot. Nate Hagens is another one who I recently gave up on. Sad because there are so few voices as it is.
Remarkable_Name_3757@reddit
Watched this entire series awhile back. Love this dude. You can also read his "do the math" blog which further goes into detail. Would highly recommend it.

I think a lot of people don't realize this, they equate modern civilization with humanity's only chance for survival when that's just not the case.
TotalSanity@reddit (OP)
Yes, and in desperately trying to maintain modern civilization maybe they are doing more harm than if they just walked away.
I think the situation that we find ourselves in is serious enough that human extinction is on the table as a legitimate possibility, but it is not a foregone conclusion, so if some people do make it to the other side of this techno-fire-ape-shit-show, then they'll muddle along in some other way, albeit in a sadly ecologically poorer world.

Haunted. Haunted.
Just one little line....
It's like I'm doing time all the time.
