As people who have been to most if not all states, which state in your experience in the U.S. mainland has you seen the most craziest drivers?

I feel like nearly everyone has a habit of saying their state has the worst drivers, but from a trucker standpoint, you probably have seen driving patterns from just about every state, which one in your experience has been having the worst drivers?
jdpunome@reddit
Houston Texas. They all drive like maniacs. Stupidest has to be Chicago Illinois where everyone acts like it's their first day driving ever. I seem to always find the most reckless truckers in Nashville TN tho. When people get behind the wheel, they seem to forget that they're in a lethal killing machine.
PTS_Solairee@reddit
I'm from the midwest so I go through chicago a ton. After a while you just get used to it and can easily anticipate what those idiots are gonna do. Houston is wild to me because they drive completely eratically and if you think their choices or option A or B they'll choose option K
jdpunome@reddit
Yeah speed limit says 75 and every person is going 125
Wooden-Astronaut8763@reddit (OP)
Yep, someone else on here referred to it as Crashville, TN.
ManxMammoth@reddit
Not states but any giant city has tons of psychos driving on the roads. Yesterday in Houston I had a nissan go into a lane I was already half way into and I witnessed a different vehicle do the same thing to several cars. My day is immediately ruined when I have to go through a giant city.
SnooBunnies7166@reddit
I stay away from most if not all Maryland plates.
RedlineM5@reddit
Any major city in Tx, Phoenix, Atlanta, Orlando, NYC, Chicago
nowellmaybe@reddit
In my experience, St Louis has the highest percentage of psychotic drivers. The traffic is usually just light enough that they are able to treat other vehicles like traffic cones on a track.
And at night, groups will shut down sections of freeway to race. It's fucking terrifying having two or three cars fly past me on both sides at 120+ when I'm puttering along at 60.
ValuableShoulder5059@reddit
It's not a state issue, but rather a city issue. Generally all cities have idiots driving.
redwingcut@reddit
I agree except for Chicago, people where way worse than any other large city I’ve been too.
errie_tholluxe@reddit
Fuck you never been in Atlanta at rush hour?
arrynyo@reddit
Atlanta any time after 3am
247world@reddit
I run out of Newnan, as long as I can be outbound on any of the interstates by about 6:30 I don't think it's that bad. I'd much rather be moving by 5:30 but it is what it is
Direct-Complaint-639@reddit
Came here to say this. I’m actually in Atlanta now but I gotta say, this city is fucking lawless.
redwingcut@reddit
I haven’t.
errie_tholluxe@reddit
If you thought Chicago was bad.....
CCCL350@reddit
Been there. Its not as bad as other cities.
SeeYouOn16@reddit
Drivers in Chicago reminded me of the insane drivers in SE Asia. Lanes are just a suggestion, traffic lights are just a suggestion, speed limits aren't even a suggestion, they don't exist.
flynnfx@reddit
Ah, I see you've also driven Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver!
Every single vehicle there in those cities has mint-condition blinkers and turn signals - because they never fucking use them!!!
DaSaw@reddit
I experienced this as a pedestrian in Chicago once. The other pedestrians gave no fucks. Didn't matter the light was red. Didn't matter there were cars going through the intersection at that moment. People just crossed.
Craziest drivers I experienced were in Phoenix. They confirmed tightly to a very precise stereotype: fit young Latino males, dressed nicely, driving freshly washed and waxed muscle cars, face set in a look of constant aggression, zipping those cars with loudly revving engines around truck that is trying to squeeze a 53' trailer into a Family Dollar parking lot. No fucks given.
arrynyo@reddit
I just got back from there earlier today. Right before I got out of downtown there was a Charger screaming down 90 with massive amounts of smoke coming from the back of the car. I'm hoping I got it on my dashcam
PlaneGames2003@reddit
I had a similar thing happen to me. I was on I90 heading east in light traffic (for Chicago standards) and all of a sudden this dude in a POS Audi A4 came flying up on my left side with his buddy in the bank’s Ford Mustang GT500 chasing him as they were swimming through traffic doing anywhere between 90-100 in a 60.
acd2002@reddit
I mean to be fair, if I paid all that money for a GT500 Id use up that whole speedometer too (not on a highway though, on a race track)
PlaneGames2003@reddit
Oh I totally agree. I’m not even a Ford guy but I gotta respect what they’re doing with the Mustang. But like I said if you’re swimming through traffic at 90-100 mph you’re probably a clout chasing idiot and the bank probably owns your car.
ValuableShoulder5059@reddit
Chicago really has a concentrated population trying to get to a concentrated area. Most other cities it's a commute from the suburbs into the city. Chicago has the lake on one side so traffic is really concentrated.
hard-of-haring@reddit
It's not about state or city. It's the entire industry that has an issue. Every year, this industry gets worse and worse by having crappy shit drivers.
Today, I drove through Saint louis and almost got side swiped by three semis.
High-In-Potassium@reddit
It's not just semis. A lot of it is also four wheelers.
The-Shartist@reddit
It used to NOT be semis you had to worry about. Four wheelers driving shitty was always a given. Nowadays...
Sir_Uncle_Bill@reddit
I'm 9.5 years in and I'm much more concerned about the average 4 wheeler than semi.
arrynyo@reddit
Facts. I live in Dayton Ohio. 60% of the people on the road here don't have a valid license. The police will literally not bother you if you drive like you got some sense, yet they will blow a red light or s stop sign without hesitation. The rule here is when your light turns green wait a second or two for a Challenger to fly through the intersection.
merrittinbaltimore@reddit
Pre covid? Probably Memphis. Back when I lived there you didn’t need drivers ed or auto insurance so it was the Wild West. After Covid lockdowns? Probably everywhere, but Baltimore has been terrible! During lockdowns I was still on the road (wine store delivery driver, people still needed booze). No one was paying attention to stop signs, red lights, anything—it was pandemonium on the roads. It’s continued on since then in the same manner. Our PD recently started up an initiative to start cracking down on simple traffic violations but I’m seeing no difference. 695 was bad before the Key Bridge collapse but it’s only gotten worse since then.
Shit, I just realized which subreddit I was on and my answer is probably not what you were looking for. I only started following this sub when I was a delivery driver during the pandemic because I wanted to see if there was anything I could do to make all your jobs easier when I was out on the roads, too. I’m only leaving it here to thank you guys for being courteous during that time! Most people out on the roads were total assholes, but the truckers that I encountered were great! Did some deliveries to guys who were stuck in various places and they were super cool and tipped extremely well.

I live in Utah and for some reason, Utahns are confused about merging onto the highway. No dude, you are merging not me, I don’t have to move for you… step on the gas or I’ll put you on the shoulder 😃
Weekly-Tension-9346@reddit
4-wheeler Utahn here. The strange thing (to me) is how many Utahn's low-key boast about bad drivers here. Like it's some kind of badge of honor. ("I survived driving in Salt Lake City today!")
Every time I road trip outside the state (a few times a year), I'm reminded (1) how awesome our state DOT actually is compared to other states and (2) that there are plenty of examples of how to not drive in every state.
XTL_@reddit
Salt lake city is actually awesome to drive through, so long as you don’t have to get off the freeway… I swear the traffic doesn’t slow down on the freeway anywhere near as bad as other cities, even in rush hour.
acd2002@reddit
Id like to have this mentality too but I always feel bad whenever I have to make someone ride the shoulder I always say "sorry dude Its nothing personal!" Even though they can't hear me lol.
PlantsNCaterpillars@reddit
Had this happen just two days ago heading south out of Salt Lake City. Long ass on-ramp too and they could have easily jumped ahead of me or dropped back but they just stayed beside my trailer till they eventually ran out of space and ended up on the shoulder.
JOliverScott@reddit
I see this in a number of states
Wooden-Astronaut8763@reddit (OP)
Haha, I live in Salt Lake and nearly everyone here says the drivers here are the worst in the country. However, they’ve not really been to as many states as and they certainly have not been everywhere like the truckers have.

Greater Toronto Area in southern Ontario. I know it’s not a state. But I seriously don’t think they actually take a test anymore. I also had a driver deliver for me with a shifted load of concrete panels cause he was cut off really bad tell me coming up this way is usually his worst experiences with drivers.
ksgif2@reddit
The 401 is the worst place to drive in North America. They managed to add in some unique design features that aren't found elsewhere.

DoctorZebra@reddit
I second Toronto. Canadians have a reputation for being nice people, but they are some lousy drivers.
HeGotNoBoneessss@reddit
Memphis, TN is seriously up there
Nozerone@reddit
Truth is, there is no one state that just has the worst/craziest/stupidest drivers. All of the states have their fair share of dipshits behind the wheel. How ever some areas do do it differently. Like for instance in Houston, the speed limits on the interstates really are just suggestions. You can do 80 on the beltway past a cop and he won't come after you even though it's a 60 zone (did it myself, just about shat myself when I crested a hill to see the cop sitting there). Meanwhile over in D.C. a LOT of people are afraid to even do the speed limit.
A lot of people will say it's this or that state. In most cases (not all) they name the state they hate the most as the one with the worst drivers/roads. Like there are people who will swear up and down that Texas has the worst, meanwhile to me I feel like it's Jersey/NY. Granted I despise Jersey/NY, so I feel more biased to say that's where the worst drivers are.
I wish I could say what the worst is based off statistics, but after googling it I found a bunch of different sites with different answers as to which state is the worst statistically speaking.
WIbigdog@reddit
Bruh, the Northeast folks drive SO SLOW. In Chicago the hazard is crazy people flying through traffic at 90mph. In Massachusetts it's just people getting on the damn highway.
arrynyo@reddit
Adding in Detroit with their 5 inch on ramps. Fun times in the winter.
Outlaw11091@reddit
Came out of a lot near Detroit. Big median prevented left turns.
Went right. Immediate stop light.
No trucks sign after the stop light.
Near the left turn signal light, it said 'truck route' above a fucking U-turn sign.
My company doesn't allow U-turns...come to find out, they do in Michigan because Michigan forces you to do U-turns.
arrynyo@reddit
I saw a guy in Texas do it in the middle of traffic. He didn't give a damn. As soon as he saw a opening he did his business and kept right on going.
I will never understand the no left turn thing in some places.
acd2002@reddit
Id say the worst that I've come across is in St Louis, the people there really are retarded on the highways.
Wooden-Astronaut8763@reddit (OP)
I agree with you for the most part on that, it’s very hard to tell which state really has the worst drivers given that everybody has different experiences and driving in a rural area versus the city will be drastically different.
Despite that, I ask the truckers on here specifically because they have been to many states than most Americans. It’s at least better than asking somebody who maybe has never traveled or who has only been to like 4 states.
And yep, I’ve lived in New Jersey, and I was born and raised in Houston. The biggest difference in my experiences that New Jersey is very densely populated and their roads are not as big as your typical Texas roads. Also, New Jersey has the jug handle on US highways where is Texas has the service roads that go parallel to freeway that are part of it which many Americans are not accustomed to.
pwhoyt63pz@reddit
Florida. Everyone there is either a lost tourist, or is too old to be driving.
CashWideCock@reddit
Texas. Drive friendly, the Texas way is totally opposite of what I see there.
HeywoodJaBlowMe123@reddit
Atlanta GA is bad
Houston, TX is bad
OKC - The drivers aren’t terrible, however they struggle hard merging onto the interstate from the ramp. Idk what it is..
It’s mainly just major cities. If i had to narrow it down to a state as a whole… most likely Texas only because Texas has the most major cities in a singular state. It all circles back to bigger cities being the issue..

New York City has been the most IDGAF type of drivers. Otherwise Chicago during any type of precipitation, they drive like idiots . The craziest is Chicago, I saw a dash cam footage of one driver getting out of their car to pistol whip another driver, then get back in there car and drive off. In morning rush hour traffic in downtown Chicago.
Wooden-Astronaut8763@reddit (OP)
I saw something like that happen in nearby Indiana too.
flexedbmw92@reddit

For me its New Jersey and Florida. New Jersey also has the WORSE cops. This isnt just experiance from driving but personal experiance growing up in the state. Been stopped by police for no reason what so ever while walking home from an internet cafe. Been threaten with arrest for calling a cop buddy, and my father, who grew up in NJ as well, has had his own run ins with corrupt cops

I don’t know about crazy, but there’s something about people from the Carolinas that they are absolutely terrified of driving in the right lane or completing a pass.
Wooden-Astronaut8763@reddit (OP)

ATL I almost killed civi & 4 cops. Shit was fucked.
I'm solely a night driver, usually. It was maybe 3 AM I was about 30 minutes from my delivery. I'm on 285 SB by the airport. In that area you can go pretty fast per the speed limit, but it's not terribly well lit
In cruising. It's been a quiet, easy trip. I see a traffic stop up ahead by a nearby exit. I only notice because of the flashing lights. But I'm in the 2nd right hand lane, they're on the shoulder, so I'm basically 3 lanes away from them.
I see some vague movement in the dark, I'm not 100% sure but I take my foot off the accelerator.
With the ambient light, the blue police lights etc, I realize people are running across the road. I start to brake and ny headlights shine enough that sure thing the guy the pulled over - there was a scuffle he broke free and was running parallel towards my lane.
I brake harder, basically standing on the brake pedal because the cops are chasing him. They tackle him, in my lane as I stop about 25 feet in front of them.
I throw my hazards on after a few seconds of not shitting myself anymore. I look at my mirrors and realize there's traffic coming at us full speed. So I position my nose to take over the lane next to me, enough to signal to anyone coming up to get over.
The wrestle with the guy for, idk, 90 seconds? I think the tazed him not really sure. They finally cuff him, drag him back to the shoulder with a quick wave at me. Still got to my drop on time.
That was the one time my job actually called me up and was like "saw the video last night, good job".
So that was neat.
But yeah ATL is crazy. I've driven NYC, NJ, CHI, etc - I think ATL is by far the worst. I think it's a culture thing. I've seen - other than the incident I mentioned above - people doing child exchanges on the shoulder. The shoulder is really treated like a parking lot a lot of the time. Then people going 90 mph just swinging across 8 lanes of traffic half hazardly, no indication.
Idk - it just feels way different down there.
Largofarburn@reddit
Charlotte had to be the worst per capita. I fucking hate that stretch of 77 between 85 and rock hill. Idiots will regularly take an exit and get right back on just to jump 2 cars ahead. It’s like 20 miles but will take 30-45 minutes unless you’re coming through in the dead of night. And even then half the time there’s a wreck or construction. Last time I went through it said left 3 lanes closed. Turns out it was the right 3 lanes. I guess at least they were 2/3s correct?
Satisfyeher@reddit
I know someone knows about that 3 lane that goes into one on 85 near Gastonia, and also the traffic near Belmont and Gastonia that happens for absolutely no reason
Largofarburn@reddit
I think that’s because they drop a lane unexpectedly for the weigh station off ramp. And also that weigh station is easy to miss so you’ve got a lot of last second merges trying to make it. And it’s a hill getting back on so all of us in those shitty lng’s struggle getting back up to speed.

Ive been on the east Coast allot recently so I'll probably say Georgia but the reality is it's a subjective question. Some people will say Missouri but Everytime I'm in Kansas City or st Louis it just seems like normal city traffic but I might just be fortunate enough to miss out on that weird window of time when all the really crazy people are on the road. While I don't like driving in California because there's just so many people and so much traffic throughout most of the state it's really not as bad as people make it out to be and most of the population is actually pretty civil on the road

Doesn't matter the city or state, the two worst drivers I've seen come down to the tags. If it's Florida tags, or disabled veteran tags, they're going to pull out in front of you while you're doing 45, they'll slam the brakes, no signal merge to the turn lane, then give you the finger.

It's really about population density more than anything. Any metro area with more than maybe 500k people is almost always frustrating. If there are 300 drivers in your vicinity, probably 30-40 of them are incompetent, inattentive, or both and they WILL slow down traffic and/or create hazards for no good reason. I've seen someone come to a COMPLETE STOP after merging onto the highway. I was able to stop but the bobtail behind me went flying off into the treeline.
Regionally, New England and Florida are probably the worst in my book. Southern California, Chicago, NYC, Atlanta and DC also suck ass, but more because of the traffic pattern than the drivers IMO. Driver-wise, once you get east of about Harrisburg PA or moving north through the DC/Baltimore metro area you're in for some wild shit. For reasons I can only speculate on, many drivers in New England routinely go 15 under in the right 2 lanes. In Florida, there is a sharp divide between 80 year olds and hot-blooded latinos with heavily modified cars, so everyone is either going 40 in a 55 or driving like they're qualifying for NASCAR.

I wish I could say it was limited to one area or another, but this is the trend I've noticed, be it a large city, a medium-sized town, or a small village. Human nature is...human nature.

Although they’re not a state the Bay Area is downright appalling with Atlanta right behind (disclosure: I never do “back east” north of NC).

Any major city. Pick a state and that major city has some of the most idiotic drivers imaginable

NJ drivers will stop in the middle of traffic, NY drivers are entitled and love putting your lige at risk, CT drivers can't drive at all, they speed in 25 to 55, but never above 60mph. When its 65 to 70mph they are too scared to go over 60mph. Maine and Vermont drivers are just inattentive, and Floridians stockpile crazy accidents. And Chicago, just the roads are hell.
