Does it tend to be a red flag, for women, if a man is 30+ years old with a loud exhaust on his car?
Posted by PaddedValls@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 424 comments
Interests are interests, but I would think it may give most women "the ick". There's a single guy in my work who is approaching 40 and he's spoken before about struggling to meet women. I haven't said this to him, but I've thought that a contributing factor may be because his exhaust is obnoxiously loud and he spends his nights in a local car park with likeminded individuals.
No judgement. He's a good guy, for as much as I know him. I do think those exhaust are ridiculous though.
Inevitable_Box3643@reddit
You literally made a whole post to judge him.
tune-happy@reddit
A car driven on public roads with a load exhuast is certainly an indicator of a dickhead. Gender doesn't matter, anyone can be this dickhead.
Master_Block1302@reddit
I mean, there may be a theoretical rebuttal to this. I could possibly say ‘I’m really into restoring 1920s Alvises, and they tend to have loud exhausts’
But I’m 99.999% of cases, an exhaust loud enough to make you think ‘I say; that car is a bit noisy’ will be driven by someone you should avoid at all costs.
Imagine I deliberately damaged the motor on my dishwasher, and put it outside on the street, and invited passers by to be impressed at how noisy my dishwasher motor was.
GrapheneFTW@reddit
On one hand you have a good sounding exhaust maybe a vintage porsche, and on the other hand a fuking crackling STI at 2am sounding like thunder.
riziger@reddit
Let’s be honest. It’s never the first one. Almost always shitty bmws corsas with the awful peeling reflective windscreens driving around like weapons undertaking and tailgating
GrapheneFTW@reddit
I never said stock...
anotherwankusername@reddit
Sounds painful. I’m sure there’s a cream for that.
Coconutpieplates@reddit
Huge red flag. Why does your exhaust need to be that loud? For attention? To purposely disturb the peace? If its just for yourself to enjoy, it still obnoxiously affects everyone around you. The meetups etc wouldn't bother me at all, but the noise is so grating and selfish imo.
OctaviaCordoba206@reddit
My MX5 exhaust fell off as it was 31 years old at the time and rusted off.
I bought an aftermarket stainless steel one that doesn't rust. It's loud.
What do you want me to do?
Important_Spread1492@reddit
How about, "My phones headphone port broke but I still want to listen to heavy metal on public transport. What am I supposed to do, pay to get it fixed?!"
The answer is obviously yes. If you are making loud noise that is disturbing other people on a daily basis, you should fix that even if it costs extra. If you're buying expensive cars, you can't really argue that you're too broke to fix it, you just don't want to.
OctaviaCordoba206@reddit
It's cute you think a 'STOCK' MX5 exhaust is the equivalent to having headphones in, and it's silent.
Proof that a lot of people haven't got a clue about cars and just spout nonsense.
My MX5 wasn't expensive, it cost me £1400.
Important_Spread1492@reddit
It's cute that you think I would care whatsoever about you knowing more about cars than me.
You don't need to know about cars to think that disturbing other people with a noisy hobby is selfish.
OctaviaCordoba206@reddit
"loud" is also subjective but, how can you moan at the car owner for owning a car that is "loud" from stock.
I'm surprised I didn't read more comments about the fact people who like sports cars with higher than 1dB exhaust notes are compensating for something
Number60nopeas@reddit
buy one that is quiet?
OctaviaCordoba206@reddit
OK pay double or triple the price for a custom "quiet" exhaust set up. Makes sense.
Number60nopeas@reddit
Yes it does. Congratulations, you have reached decent human being level.
OctaviaCordoba206@reddit
Majority of exhausts on the market don't pass the decibel threshold for being illegal so... I think I'll keep doing what I'm doing.
People will moan about my exhaust going the speed limit in my 35 year old classic car, yet won't complain about the Yummy mummy speeding in a 30 in her 2024 3 ton electric car.
Logic.
Swamp_Donkey82@reddit
Well, it seems he does like to hang around with the type of wankers who have “locally hated” stickers on their cars…
gravitas_shortage@reddit
There are 35 million women in the UK, so with individual tastes. Some will like it, some won't.
SigourneyReap3r@reddit
No, because I, a 34 year old woman, also have a loud exhaust on my car.
I am into cars, I have helped build mine, I love the sound of my exhaust, I love my specific lights, my body kit, I love it, it is my hobby.
It is a hobby for him too.
Just like for some people baking is a hobby (I hate cake) or reading (I think it's boring).
Our personal opinions obviously reflect in who we would choose to date but just because we do not have that one thing in common it does not mean it is flat out a no.
Now, the spending all of him nights in a local car park would be an issue, don't get me wrong I attend car meets and events but I know for a fact, here anyway, that the little meet ups that happen every night are with people far too young for me and that would be a factor if he is involved in that part of the car scene due to age differences and the things that happen there.
bonkerz1888@reddit
TBF the chap reading his book or baking a cake isn't affecting anyone else. A bunch of (mostly) teenagers revving the shit out of their cars just so their exhaust can pop while showing no sure care for anyone else on the road however..
SigourneyReap3r@reddit
And the teenagers revving their little pop bangs is totally different to most of the people in the car scene.
It is the age old tar everyone with the same brush, those of us who like and appreciate cars and the work we put into them are not racing around the streets with our foot to the floor in a fiesta, yes our exhausts may be loud but it is 2 seconds of your life as we pass you and has minimal impact.
Many hobbies can have similar impacts, ie minimal, fishing in public areas where I walk my dog or myself, vaping, football on the field I like to walk my dog. The impact of peoples hobbies is not really a thing here, you are focussing on the people who take the piss.
flumpamoo@reddit
The noise from those evil souped up bikes/scooter things does my head in! People (men. I've never seen any female doing it) ride them on the foot paths around where I live and they think they are so cool. They aren't. Its bloody dangerous! I've had to grab my dog and physically push her into a hedge to get away from the absolute wankers who rev their engines and tear past us. It pollutes the peace, terrifies my dog and me & is far more intrusive than some kids playing football or someone vaping.
se1derful@reddit
Except it's not minimal at all, and a real danger to public health.
*While some of these sources of mobility-related noise are linked to urban planning and infrastructure — residents' proximity to major roads and airports — others are the result of obnoxious behavior that makes traffic-related noise worse — such as speeding drivers, revved engines and modified exhaust pipes.
“We carried out a simulation of the disturbance generated by one loud scooter traveling from Place de la Bastille to Place de l’Etoile and determined that vehicle would likely wake up more than 10,000 people when covering that trajectory late at night,”*
https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-france-paris-european-green-deal-noise-pollution-in-cities-sounds-like-a-problem/
SigourneyReap3r@reddit
The article also stressed in regards to people whom live on busy roads and in urban areas, so these issues are not solely down to the odd loud exhaust you hear.
"People do not realize that long-term exposure to noise from the road traffic in our neighborhoods and cities every day can cause other effects that go beyond hearing damage,”
The odd loud exhaust is still minimal compared to the general road traffic which is more of an issue, and it also, in your quote, references loud exhausts within obnoxious behaviour which yes is a problem and I do not agree with obnoxious behaviour but we can definitely see, just by existing, that this is not all loud exhausts and is specifically people undertaking obnoxious behaviours such as speeding also because modified exhausts which are loud are not at obnoxious levels until the engine is revved or hits high speeds (Obviously some are but for the majority of car enthusiasts these are out of our price range)
se1derful@reddit
You literally say that your exhaust is loud and affects other people in your previous comment, and now you're saying it doesn't?
bonkerz1888@reddit
Nah I'm well aware there's different scenes within the modding circuit. But we're discussing a 40 year old bloke hanging about with teens in car parks, he's clearly never grown beyond his teenage years and clearly one of these types who still thinks it's cool to be an arse on the roads.
Most of the pals I had back in the day who were boy racers matured as did their cars, either upgrading for top of the range models like M division cars or they'd get serious about tuning their stock model cars without all the garish bodywork.
ImJustARunawaay@reddit
All of which is complete conjecture - not even OP has been. I sometimes go and hang around in "car parks" with my car scene - it's almost exclusively middle class, older millennial, families, with their kids.
There's not a person here who knows anything about OPs mate, and even OP seems pretty clueless.
Important_Spread1492@reddit
Which would be fine if you don't live anywhere near other people, but if you do it is rightly seen as inconsiderate to have a loud exhaust or blaring music from a car, just like the person playing their music out loud on the train/bus is inconsiderate. That music might be their hobby, but it is not the hobby of all the people around them who are also subjected to it.
Beefstah@reddit
It always amuses me that my wife - who I met at a car meet - has a louder exhaust on her car than I do on mine. She chose it, she likes it that way, and has done for over 20 years.
Cars get louder when you take those 'orrible restrictive cats off and have a straight through pipe. So be it. I like loud cars
SigourneyReap3r@reddit
I also like loud cars.
They impact people for all of two seconds as I drive past, it impacts them about as much as a cat crossing the path of a cat hater, the dude fishing in a public park whilst I walk my dog, or a vegan passing a meat restaurant.... hardly at all.
People like to get up in arms about it because they do not understand it and it isn't their hobby, but they would never consider that their hobby can impact people too....for all of about two seconds.
People feel that the only people who like cars are teenage boys and it is an incredibly outdated view, yes there are teenagers speeding around with little pop bangs on their Fiesta's but that isn't the car scene and isn't all car lovers, just like not all vegans are militant, not all Marvel lovers are classic stereotypical nerds etc etc etc.
The hate is pathetic, and comes from a place of jealousy and emptiness imo.
coolsimon123@reddit
This is probably the only nuanced take in this post. I fall in the same boat as you. I build my cars in my spare time, they have exhausts on them but I wouldn't be caught dead at a meet. The two are not the same. It is my hobby and it would give me "the ick" if a girl was put off by the fact I spend a great deal of time covered in oil looking for my missing 10mm
Big-Parking9805@reddit
I'm someone who spends a lot of time watching videos on cars and can enjoy a well built car with a pop and a bang for a laugh at shows, I can defo understand the appeal.
I couldn't have one in my car personally, and 75% of people have them on some right dog cars - those I would judge much more harshly. Neighbour near me used to have one on his Mondeo that was basically falling apart - it was very poorly built.
ac07682@reddit
Hate to break it to you mate but there never was a 10mm In the first place, it's all an illusion
caffeine_lights@reddit
I actually think this is a really great point.
There is no universal list of what is attractive vs unattractive. Loud cars would drive me absolutely bonkers and be a complete turn off. But I am married to somebody who has LED lights in his computer and spends most evenings playing computer games, which would be an instant turn off for somebody else. I know that because it's often brought up as an example of something supposedly on the "universally unattractive" list. Well, not to me. I am geeky too and I like to spend most evenings on internet forums, so it works for us.
GrapheneFTW@reddit
Im into cars, but i dont like deafening sounds.
Regular_Zombie@reddit
I doubt we'd have anything in common based on what you've shared, but thanks for bringing the other side of the coin to this discussion.
TulipTattsyrup99@reddit
Men with loud exhausts. 20s Boy racer types 30s Need to grow up 40s REALLY need to grow up 50s Driving an old car with rattling exhaust, hasn’t got around to fixing 60s Obsessed with every little noise a car makes, so no loud exhaust.
A generalisation, but generally accurate
NormQuestioner@reddit
Unfortunately, most women seem to want this.
Creative-Tomorrow-54@reddit
Some small endowed individual near me has a focus rs and always revs the tits off it. Thinks everyone looks at him but really they're embarrassed for him. He's about the same age. Has no personality apart from a ford focus and probably hangs about in car parks too.
So yea, red flag. Unless you're 16. I mean why else are they in these car parks??????
ImJustARunawaay@reddit
Some women, I imagine. Then there's people like me who met my wife through being a car enthusiast and she's put up with many years of being the other half to a car guy.
I've no doubt my hobbies are a massive ick for some women, but I'm not going to be changing them.
It does rather depend on the car and exhaust though - if we're talking actual car enthusiast, with something worth talking about and a genuine hobby, vs "I've stuck a Halfords special on and de catted my 1.6 Focus"
llijilliil@reddit
He's being as irratating as possible to huge numbers of people in the hope that such "bold confidence" and "negative attention" implies he's so cool/powerful that the rules don't apply to him. That attracts a certain type of women.
ImJustARunawaay@reddit
I mean, it's a big conclusion to draw when OP clearly isn't a car guy, and so nobody here really has a clue what his mate is doing.
Performance cars are loud, it's for a reason. My motorbike is loud, despite it being a very typically (to the point of mockery) tame, reserved bike.
He could be deliberately irritating, or he could have an interesting, performance car that gets driven sensibly. We don't know, and you certainly don't know.
llijilliil@reddit
Yes, the reason is to be as LOUD as possible to attract attention and show off. Afterall its not like all that implied horsepower is of much use pottering about the culdesac at 20 mph.
Go nuts on a private racetrack if you really want by all means, but let's not turn residential areas or random streets etc.
And most of the complaints aren't about genuinely impressive cars, most of the time its silly kids taking their fairly crappy car and making it less powerful in order to make it LOUDER.
"Sensibly" is the opposite of "extreme acceleration" and if you aren't looking for extreme acceleration then you simply don't need some extremely overpowered car.
ImJustARunawaay@reddit
It's okay, you know nothing about cars and that's fine - but you're using your ignorance to spout absolute nonsense.
llijilliil@reddit
Nonsense. I know full well that extra (unnecessary) power can be produced by more powerful engines and that often means they are a little bit louder.
I also know that similar performance can be achieved without the excess noise if people are willing to pay for it. Maybe cars that are more than powerful enough for any legal use on the roads match that description.
Last of all, I know a lot of utter arseholes like to "upgrade" their cars into ones that SOUND powerful by deliberately sabotaging the measures usually used to keep them reasonably quiet. Those assholes are what this whole thread is about, stop defending them.
True, but you argued "it was for a reason" as if that justified the antisocial noise.
If I enjoyed shooting fireworks and you lived next to me I'm fairly sure that pretty quickly you'd get sick of me waking you up with them. Same with blasting music or 101 antisocial actions.
Any car roaring like hell enough for people inside their houses or inside other cars to even notice it is either designed to make it loud for the sake of loud or is being driven like a dickhead. In fact you could argue the very act of using it to make so much noise is "driving like a dickhead".
ImJustARunawaay@reddit
It's not nonsense.
It is for a reason, and your lack of knowledge doesn't change that.
Some people make their cars deliberately loud, for no performance reasons, yes - those people are knobs, yes. We have no idea where OPs made fits in.
txteva@reddit
It's certainly not a plus point for me. I did date a 'car' guy - on the first date (cinema & meal) he took me to a car park to hang out with his car friends and their cars. After 30 minutes of being ignored I left - took him an hour to notice! 😄
He was a nice bloke and we caught up a few times but never had serious dating vibes - he love his car too much!
jillcrosslandpiano@reddit
he spends his nights in a local car park
would be a bigger dealbreaker for me than the decibels of the exhaust.
PaddedValls@reddit (OP)
Yeah, gonna struggle to meet new people there.
AnotherKTa@reddit
You'll meet new people, but I suspect that the demographic that hang around in car parks showing off their loud modified cars is largely male rather than female.
barrybreslau@reddit
Are knobs?
Gold-Primary3660@reddit
Whether you like it or not, modified cars are a hobby and need a space to meet and appreciate their cars. I'd much rather them do it in a car park that's usually far from residential buildings than on the street outside their homes Fuck me people in the uk are bitter to see others happy
barrybreslau@reddit
I normally see them doing 70 down my residential street and making a loud noise that wakes my kids up. I'm not bitter but I'd laugh if he crashed it into a tree.
Gold-Primary3660@reddit
No, you normally see some frequent twats doing 70 down your street and it would be nice to see them reap the consequences.
However, we're talking about people having car meets at the back of a car park, which would give them the benefit of the doubt that they're at least a bit conscious of others. We're not complaining about boy racers here
Sadly due to work I just drive a citroen berlingo but I've stopped a couple of times to chat to the lads and no matter where I go they always seem to be nice lads/ladies who are chuffed to see people show interest in their style
On a side note: I've seen plenty more plain bmw/audi/ford/tesla and god knows what else speed down my road from idiot parents racing to school. I'm just not going to tar every parent with that brush
coolsimon123@reddit
You say this but on the very few meets I've been to, the M/F ratio is more like 70/30 than the 99/1 you're thinking it probably is. Cars, much like gaming today, are much less tied in to gender then they have been in previous generations. I actually met an ex gf at a meet once
SignificantEarth814@reddit
I wanna add, that even in the 2000s guys brought their girlfriends and girlfriends friends. Has no one seen Fast&Furious?
Shaper_pmp@reddit
I know, right?
He'll be telling us next that the teenage nobs with the baked-bean-can exhausts hanging around a dingy Tesco carpark aren't secretly all hyper-competent secret-agent types, and all their girlfriends aren't six-foot asian and latina supermodels tottering around on six-inch heels and hot pants on a drizzly November in Slough.
He can't fool us - we've all seen the documentaries with Vin Diesel!
SignificantEarth814@reddit
I went to car meets in Slough! Thr ladies wore a lot of white puffy parker jackets, light blue denim jeans, and they'd chew gum like a camel. I doubt much has changed. The music, probably.

I’d like to know what ‘interesting’ hobbies all you haters have?
illarionds@reddit
Modifying cars is fine, indeed I find it impressive.
Obnoxious exhausts though are, well, obnoxious, not to mention often illegal.
Sjmurray1@reddit
Are they , as I’ve owned cars new from the factory that an average person would say had obnoxious exhausts?
illarionds@reddit
I wouldn't call anything factory fitted obnoxious.
People who deliberately mod their exhausts to make them louder are obnoxious, and triply so if they're emitting more pollution to do it.

If a person wants to be loud and obnoxious they should accept the cost of that is that people will like them a lot less.
MattSR30@reddit
I don’t know what the right word for this is (bore, twat, who knows) but this is how I feel whenever AskUK has a conversation about clothes.
I feel dress is part of the social contract you’re on about. I’ll never judge someone who is scruffy due to money or health issues, or is wearing cheap or tattered clothes for similar issues, but I absolutely do judge the hell out of people who go around town in massive hoodies, joggers, and crocs.
Don’t know where it stemmed from in life, but it just makes me feel like people don’t give a shit. Things like showering, brushing your hair and teeth, and putting on presentable clothes is as much a social thing as it is a personal thing. We all share this space, we should all put some effort in.
not-much@reddit
Don't you like these clothes or the people generally wearing these clothes?
MattSR30@reddit
I mean I don’t particularly like the clothes. Nobody on Reddit believes me when I say I wear jeans at home as comfort clothes as well.

SHOTTING_IS_EASY@reddit
who are you to define what "proper" clothing is? you're not god mate
MattSR30@reddit
Correct. It’s an opinion. Exhausts being annoying is also an opinion.
SHOTTING_IS_EASY@reddit
not really, i have no escape from some dickheads loud exhaust as he drives past me. i cant just stop hearing. you dont have to look at people and analyse their clothes and judge them, that is entirely something you are choosing to do and have the power not to do.
hungrycrisp@reddit
The fashion now days IS massive hoodies joggers and crocs. ItMy cousin asks for selfridges vouchers every birthday/christmas so she can buy more oversized hoodies.
SHOTTING_IS_EASY@reddit
this guy clearly has no idea about anything fashion related. probably thinks we should all be walking around in suit 7 days a week wearing our good obedient citizen uniform.
llijilliil@reddit
Sorry but cheap and tattered should read as "don't give a shit" far more than someone wearing a bloody hoody. What's your issue with a hood exactly?
I kinda agree on some super casual wear or people wearing pyjamas out to the shops or school run though so maybe we aren't exactly different.
MattSR30@reddit
To me it just feels like people don’t care. If I go outside I am showering, putting on jeans and something else. I wear shoes not crocs or sliders. I’ll brush my hair. Things like that.
It’s partly for me, sure, but I am also not going to walk around other people in a manner I deem unpresentable. The least I can do in public is be presentable and put together. I don’t even open my door for deliveries dressed like that.
If you rock out your front door in sliders, and joggers and hoodies, it just looks to me like you put five seconds of effort in, with the goal of not being naked rather than being put together.
It’s a personal thing but in my life I am very big on ‘we are all part of a shared community with a shared social contract.’ Your clothes are as much a sign of respect for your community as wearing earphones when listening to music on the bus. To me, at least.
oxwearingsocks@reddit
I seldom go out “scruffy” but I think it’s no one’s business if I did tbh. You feeling annoyed at how other people are dressed is 100% an issue on your side, not theirs IMO.
Playing loud music in public, or driving like a dick, or smoking in close proximity to people, or other ways of actively impacting other people is vastly different to choice of clothes in this social contract you mention.
If I like hoodies and joggers, that’s my choice the same as if I like indie rock over EDM, pizza over chips, or sci fi over romcoms. It’s something that doesn’t impact other people’s lives in any way, so no one else should give a shit.
MattSR30@reddit
Oh I recognise it’s my problem, that’s why I started this whole thing saying that whilst I have an opinion I won’t let it influence my interactions with a person.
I get it’s no one’s business, that’s why I’d never say anything. I internally say ‘put some adult clothes on’ and I go about my day. It impacts absolutely nothing, it’s just an opinion I have.
Udonnomi@reddit
I think that person just doesn’t like tracksuits. I like that there is a variety and freedom of choice in clothing.
llijilliil@reddit
Brushing your hair is a million miles away from moans about "wearing a slightly different type of pants" imo.
MattSR30@reddit

Brilliant_Apple@reddit
It’s definitely scruff behaviour. If you’re not exercising or just released out on remand there’s no reason to be going about in tracksuit.

A hoodie and joggers are comfy, its the walking with your pants showing and ripped jeans, or the women with "skirt jeans" that are way too short...
Personally I always wear a jumper + shirt + trousers. Some poke fun at me saying I wear granny clothes, others say I look smart/fancy/classy -_-
Dans77b@reddit
I got downvoted to hell last week for saying hoodies are a bit scruffy (I think on this sub). Reddit is not the place to talk about fashion!

Not just 30+ but any age. I hear a loud vehicle, especially one being revved up, I place the driver into one of three categories:
Compensating - for a small penis.
Deflecting - from their godawful personality.
Closeted - because it's other guys they're impressing, not women.

I’m going to climb on my soapbox for a minute, but I think people are too quick with the ‘judgemental’ label.
We’re all judgemental. It’s perfectly normal. We all look at people and make determinations 24/7. You can walk down the street and form an opinion of someone—positive or negative—in half a second.
I judge people all the time. I can look at someone and go ‘oh he’s probably a bit of a knobhead’ but the important thing is I won’t hold that against him if we interact.
Loud exhaust falls firmly in the ‘not hurting anyone’ camp but yes, I’m judging the fuck out of you. 9/10 people who make their exhausts like that are dickheads. Could be you’re the 1/10 who is sound, but I’m still going to judge you for your shitty car.
ForceStories19@reddit
pattern recognition is the reason our species became the apex predator
AMightyDwarf@reddit
Pattern recognition is all well and good until you start noticing patterns based on immutable characteristics.
ForceStories19@reddit
Pattern recognition based on immutable characteristics is the very basis of its usefulness as an evolutionary trait..
sorry to disappoint you but evolutionary processes don’t align well with moral standards
MattSR30@reddit
You’re not wrong. I have heard some gazelles with some awful exhaust pipes.
PuzzleheadedLow4687@reddit
Loud exhausts maybe don't 'hurt' people but they can cause inconvenience and discomfort. Like the one that went past our house at 2am yesterday and woke us up. Whoever was driving that was definitely a dickhead.
Tall-Photo-7481@reddit
More than mere inconvenience and discomfort!
If you have to live with this shit long term (I did, home next to main road with unnecessarily noisy cars and motorbikes going past frequently, even at night) then it can have a serious impact on your life and takes a toll on your mental health. Thankfully out of there now but I remember having to repeatedly stop and restart conversations because some dickhead went past. Having to stop and restart bedtime stories to my kids. Constantly rewinding tv or films. Interrupted sleep. Doesn't sound like much, but filtering it out is an added cognitive overhead that constantly drains you, adding one tiny grain of stress after another onto your shoulders, until you are exhausted or close to breaking and most of the time you don't even realise why.
Anyone who deliberately modifies their vehicle to be unnecessarily loud and then drives it on public roads should have it taken from them. Inconsiderate, selfish bastards.
No-Security2046@reddit
Yeah, it's a mental health problem for sure. There's research and everything. It's like saying smoking doesn't harm anyone else other than the smoker. We've got evidence now, so these opinions (that it's not harming anyone) need to be revised.
After-Dentist-2480@reddit
Loud exhaust falls firmly into the ‘look at me everybody, I don’t care how much the noise upsets you, I’m having my fun’ camp.
I think you’re generous suggesting 1/10 aren’t arseholes.
kittyvixxmwah@reddit
They might as well be Father Fintan Stack saying "If you don't like it, tough. I've had my fun, and that's all that matters."
Daiseku@reddit
I am a car guy myself and i have to agree with you here and there is a difference between a v12 loud singing and a straight pipe with pops and bangs. It not even the loudness that annoys me. Is the uselessness as a mod and the actual reduction of power that does it.
And as someone that loves tuned and modified cars. These fiestas and corsas with the big fuck off exhausts that do absolutely nothing are just outright annoying.
MissingLink101@reddit
It's always funny when you hear an engine coming and then just see a mini cooper farting its way past you at 20mph
JackXDark@reddit
Yeah, quite. It's just howler monkey behaviour. Properly fast cars can glide past with barely any disturbance as they're not wasting energy as noise and heat.
Forsaken-Original-28@reddit
Those shitty astons and Ferraris with their loud exhausts....
JackXDark@reddit
I once drove an Aston Martin worth about half a million quid around the New Forest and was shitting myself that it would spook the ponies that were wandering around and they'd put a hoof through the windscreen or something. I was technically insured for it but only third party, so if I fucked it up that was an expensive bill that was probably on me.
But nope, it was fine - just kept the revs down and took it easy and it was no louder than any other car.
HeatheryLeathery@reddit
I don't believe there is the 1/10 person who isn't a dickhead. If you have specifically engineered your car to be obnoxiously loud then that in itself is dickhead behaviour.
MattSR30@reddit
I get you, but I try to remind myself being a decent person is not a zero-sum game. I make a distinction between dickhead behaviour and being a dickhead.
Another soapbox moment: it’s like bigotry. A person is not necessarily a bigot for saying something bigoted. Older generations, for instance. To me, it requires intent and repetition.
My dad will sometimes say ‘a guy in a dress’ in casual conversation. He goes to pride parades, he wears LGBT+ pins, he gets pronouns right 99% of the time, but he’s a man in his sixties from the country. Sometimes he gets his words wrong, but you’d be foolish to call him a transphobe.
All that to say: I agree someone can act like a dickhead with their car, but they might be perfectly fine in all other scenarios. I don’t think it does any good to write people off for one small thing. But yes, still judge them!
skelly890@reddit
That's me. Time moves faster when you're older, and it's difficult to keep up. And sometimes we know what's going on, but feel like taking the piss, just because. But we mean well.

What a strange question. I doubt very much whether he drives up to random women and revs his engine, and if he does maybe that’s just one of the reasons he’s single.
What the fuck does his car have to do with his success (or otherwise) with the opposite sex?
Number60nopeas@reddit
I think it has a lot to do with it. Im not a car snob, I would happily date someone with a clapped out £1000 banger, but I would not go near a 40 year old chav in a blue subaru impreza that sounds like a hedge trimmer
kinellm8@reddit
You wouldn’t have to get in it! I can understand not wanting to drive around with someone ragging their scooby everywhere, but there are plenty of enthusiasts who aren’t 40 year old chavs!
Some people just like certain cars, doesn’t automatically make them bad people.
Number60nopeas@reddit
The original question is about dating somebody in their 30s with a car like that, so i would assume that if I was dating them, then at some point I would indeed have to get in it.
Not bad people, just chavs that would give a lot of women the ick.

I'm 35M, always had an interest in anything car/bike related and have owned various performance cars like M3, M4, C63 and now have an BMW M5 along with a super bike and all these types of vehicles are loud by nature, they are both fitted with aftermarket exhausts and to me sound amazing. I like going through tunnels and putting my foot down to hear the screaming V8, I like what I like, not going to be apologetic about it. However, I don't turn on my car during early mornings or late at night as I like to be considerate to my neighbours.
You have supercars like Lamborghini and Ferrari which have screaming V10/V12 engines which sound intoxicating to me and a lot of people share the same feeling. Why would that be a red flag? Pretty sure if some guy pulled up in a McLaren or Bugatti, most women wouldn't think that was a red flag 🤣
Like the others before me have said, if the guy drives around in a shitbox with a cherry bomb exhaust thingy then yes, that's a red flag and I would imagine only young guys are into that, your typical parked up at Maccies kinda guys.
JavaRuby2000@reddit
The loud exhaust itself shouldn't be a red flag.
The hanging around in car parks absolutely should be. I'm a petrol head myself and go to car meets and cars and coffee and such but, not with the kids who meet in car parks at night time.
Its very likely that the reason your colleague can't find a women is because he's chasing after girls 20+ years younger than him.

fleashart@reddit
Do you care about how much I would suffer* for your unnecessary loud noises? Not trying to be confrontational or accusatory, just never get a chance to ask this directly.
*Autism. A sudden loud exhaust can genuinely fuck me up for days.
aPandemoniumOfKea@reddit
Answer: No, they don’t. I’m not sure they’re capable of understanding the stress and upset they cause in their “30 seconds” which, as you’ve said, can seriously wreck other people’s days, to say nothing of pets and wildlife. Thanks for saying this so well and clearly!
Subject-External-168@reddit
One of my cars is very loud. It's a hundred years old so doesn't pop or bang like a modern car, just sounds like an angry swarm of bees.
No-one cared about the noise when it was built; I don't care now.
fleashart@reddit
Yet Florence Nightingale was writing about the cruelty of noise pollution 150 years ago. I assure you, people cared.
Subject-External-168@reddit
I assume then your autism also means that you take everything literally and don't get hyperbole?
fleashart@reddit
What would be the utility of your hyperbole re: the claim that "no-one" cared about engine noise 100 years ago? What point are you making?
Subject-External-168@reddit
Please tell me you're trolling...if not then prattling on about the utility of a claim sounds ridiculous. We're shitposting on reddit, not writing scientific papers.
But as you still are having difficulty with a basic figure of speech I'll put it very simply. People built car to go fast. Car loud. Fast more important. You not important then. You not important now.
Btw, if you want to sound clever the Iliad would have been a better example than nurse Flo.

Sireaux@reddit
If the sound of a loud exhaust can "fuck you up for days" then you probably should just stay inside, mate.
fleashart@reddit
Well I do often have to stay inside for days or weeks at time, yes. If I could function typically then it wouldn't be a disability. I wonder if you'd adopt the same tone with an army veteran, given that PTSD and autism often present almost identically.
Minute-Freedom7755@reddit
Well no, I wouldn't have the same attitude towards an army veteran because they've actually gone through something that's mentally/physically fucked them up.
You having autism vs an army veteran with PTSD are two different scenarios completely, no matter what you may think.
OctaviaCordoba206@reddit
You say autism - I know an autistic child who loves loud exhaust noises.
fleashart@reddit
Indeed, that's the spectrum part! Not that noise pollution is exclusively a problem for autistic people either.
kmsat31@reddit

I have a “loud” exhaust that pops and bangs on my car completely stock from BMW and I’m well over 40.
Certainly not a turn off for my (male) partner (female) as she encouraged me to buy it and loves it.
drtrivagabond@reddit
Genuine question. Why are you so desperate for attention you disregard others' peace and comfort?
MrNippyNippy@reddit
I don’t care about other people one way or another particularly.
My car has a, relatively, large engine which when being used at fairly high “usage” produces a lot of exhaust as it’s burning a lot of petrol.
It also sounds good when it’s accelerating, the pops and bangs are on overrun and at a bit of fun.
I will point out - not that I massively care - although the car is fairly loud on startup (warming up the cats) it’s only loud after that when being driven in sport mode with the exhaust valves open which is not something I do round the town.
For info this is the noise my car makes

I have - I was holding off for the new model (G45 M50) but after driving an iX1 the interior is a no no to me - plus no a massive fan of the 2024 speed bonging.
Holding off another year then I’ll see about 2023 approved used I think.
I believe the 2022 is the LCI facelift so you’ll have a quieter exhaust but nicer looking rear lights plus some interior changes.
R/BMWX3 is quite American centric but still useful.
Minute-Freedom7755@reddit
Interesting. Thanks for the reply.
The interior looks really nice in the 2022 personally. So looks like I'll be doing some shopping around!

Depends on the car amongst other things.
If its a fiesta with a pop and bang map and a loud exhaust then yeah probably.
If its just a old C63 Mercedes which has a loud exhaust from factory then probably not.

I’m not interested in someone with a boy racer car/screaming exhaust and on top of that… some one who hangs out in car parks with others with just as annoying cars. My neighbour has one of these loud exhausts and I makes my house shake when he starts/stops the car on his drive

BppnfvbanyOnxre@reddit
On the whole I'd say men are more immature than women and getting excited about loud exhausts is more than nudging that needle in the wrong direction.
DisposableMech@reddit
I’d say the bigger red flag is the person automatically looking down on someone an red flagging them because they have a hobby.
I’ve had that with an ex before who hated it if I ever went out skateboarding with friends on an evening instead of seeing her, even though I would see her the other 6 nights of the week.
Of course, if they have an obnoxiously loud exhaust and cancel plans with you repeatedly to do their hobby, that is different as they are being selfish. But a nicely tuned car with a slightly louder exhaust from stock, should not automatically be a red flag.
beneyh@reddit
Nah because he must have a massive piece. Correlation between big exhausts and big pieces is massive. (I annoyingly have a loud exhaust but a tiny piece so must be an exception 😂😂)
Grecian1303@reddit
Some context as to the make and model of the car would go a great distance here..

I tend to call people like this 'bang bang pop' as its both an accurate representation of the noise their car makes & also presumably their sexual performance.

HabricKapowski@reddit
I’m going to refer this to Nick Offerman, who once said: “If you have tuned your car, truck or motorcycle to growl, roar or vroom in any way louder than is necessary, when you rev your engine and treat everyone within a quarter mile to the aggressive noise you have spent time and money to broadcast, you only sound incredibly sad. It’s indistinguishable from a baby screaming on an airplane or the subway, except the baby is not doing it on purpose. To further pollute the public airspace that we all share in that manner is to be a bad citizen. Please think about what you’re doing. It’s painful and violent. And I would ask you to consider working out your insecurities in some other way, like Dungeons and Dragons.“
turntricks@reddit
Yeah it's the attention-seeking aspect of it that puts me off - attaching a loud exhaust to your car so you can scream LOOK AT ME just ends up sounding utterly pathetic. Congratulations, you bought a car. What do you want, a medal?
DillerDallas@reddit
My perception is that guys that struggle to meet women simply does not know how to talk to them. Tell him to ask more questions, because a loud exhaust might indicate an egocentric personality.
Discontitulated@reddit
It seems the rule is its only popularly agreeable when the loud car is also an expensive car like a Lambo or Ferrari because being rich trumps being obnoxious.
Honda Civic with exhaust = bellend Lambo Aventador = cool
brightonbloke@reddit
I think anyone who considers that a red flag is probably not worth his interest, and that's coming from someone who doesn't care for loud exhausts. If someone is going to be that shallow, he's better off without them.
bahumat42@reddit
It's shallow to respect those around you?
brightonbloke@reddit

bahumat42@reddit
I didn't insult anyone, I didn't use rude language or provoke anyone.
And by any extent words you have to seek out are inherently less affecting than a loud environmental noise being foisted on a community.
I'm not interrupting peoples lives by posting on Reddit, loud exhausts definitely do
brightonbloke@reddit
A rather wordy way of saying 'no, I do not behave to standard I hold others to'.
jj198handsy@reddit
Is it really ‘shallow’ if you are considering a relationship with that person? I mean that loud, ‘look at me’ exhaust is on a car you are going to potentially drive in to a restaurant or to meet friends, relatives.

Im mid 50s, single and have a 'loud' car (V8 Mustang GT). I dont think its a red flag to be into cars, especially middle aged men who are likely in a position to be able to afford a fancy car for the first time in their lives.
Im considerate to my neighbours and dont rev the engine but I do love that sound and feeling in the morning when I start it up. I tell people its like having an espresso first thing in the morning, gets your heart rate up and gives me positive energy to start the day.
I cant speak for all women but the ones in my life love the car. My ex wife has borrowed it several times to go on day trips with her friends and my daughter has asked me to drive her and her boyfriend to the end of year formal because they want to make an 'entrance'.

It shows that he's happy to be inconsiderate to everyone around him for his own enjoyment, which is going to be a red flag to many people.
But the fact that he's "spending his night in a local car park with other like-minded individuals" means that driving a loud car is clearly a big part of his personality - so unless someone is also into that then that's more likely to be off putting. In the same way that if he spent his nights going out and getting pissed, then that would be off-putting to anyone who doesn't also want to spend their nights getting pissed.
OctaviaCordoba206@reddit
Ouch. Anyone above the age of 22 going to a car meet is now an immature child? (as opposed to spending the evening on Reddit)

Having a "loud exhaust" doesn't equal the full extent of "car culture".
PapaJrer@reddit
The maturity aspect comes from going to an event that the landowner has permitted, the council have approved, and concerns of neighbours have been taken in to account.
OctaviaCordoba206@reddit

OctaviaCordoba206@reddit
I'm 30+ with 3 cars, one (Mk1 MX5) has a very loud exhaust as my old one fell off and another (Megane R26) has a loud-ish exhaust with whooshy induction kit too!
I like cars, car culture, car meets, motorsport events, etc. it's a hobby.
If a girl/woman doesn't like that, that's fine. I'd rather be "into cars", than drive a boring financed 2024 Kia that I bought to impress strangers in Aldi car park.

I've got a friend (could even be the same guy you're talking about!) who's always had these cars and you can hear him before he's even made it into my street, it's so embarrassing!

My Husband has a car that came with a loud exhaust, if it’s in comfort mode then it’s fine. That being said spending nights in parks with ‘other like minded people’ is the part that would give me the ick.

DownrightDrewski@reddit
I mean, every car has an exhaust - very few people try to make them obnoxiously loud.
OctaviaCordoba206@reddit
Most people finance £50,000 electric SUV's for a status among their peers - very few buy older interesting cars, and modify them, with nice loud exhausts.
MrNippyNippy@reddit
Not every car - electrics don’t.
DownrightDrewski@reddit
Fair, though kind of irrelevant in the context of the conversation.
*every ICE car has an exhaust.
MrNippyNippy@reddit
Not if it’s removed
DownrightDrewski@reddit
The fake exhaust outlets are hilarious - on combustion based engines there's still a real exhaust somewhere though.
Now, to out pedant you for a moment- if you remove the typical exhaust system from a combustion engine you still have an exhaust of sorts. The exhaust manifold, and even the exhaust valves themselves can count as a super noisy exhaust that would be loved by some, and hated by all around them.
MrNippyNippy@reddit
Fair play sir - I’m out pedanted (if that’s a word).
I have to say I actually find the fake EV “white” noise generated by modern EVs in order not to run people down to be more annoying than most exhausts.
Maybe it’s the un-naturalness of the noise but my neighbour has a kona and comes and goes at all times of the day and night and it’s fucking maddening when the bedroom windows are open.

Loud exhausts on shit cars... the worst combination ever. I don't care if it sounds like an aircraft carrier taking off, as long as you're in a car that deserves the soundtrack. Anyone doing this to a shitty little fiesta is a total bellend.

There are 6 houses down that drive so I don’t know who the evil person is but I despise them with all my heart. The amount of times I’ve been woken up at 6am on a Sunday is making me ready for murder
inquisitiveimpulses@reddit
The sheer number of people in the UK who don't understand the basics about cars or the actual function of an exhaust system is pretty funny. It kind of makes sense that the direction of the development of British engines was based on your tax code. Because those writing the tax code didn't understand how horsepower actually works it was regulated by the size of the bore which led to longer stroked engine which naturally produce more horsepower. The fact that the Brits didn't understand such a basic thing as the relationship of displacement versus bore size tells me everything I need to know about what most of the people commenting this thread don't understand. An engine is an air pump. The more air you get out of the engine, the more air you can get into the engine. The more air you breathe in, the more horsepower you produce.
bahumat42@reddit
We get it you like cars.
Have a gold star.
inquisitiveimpulses@reddit
Serious question: why do Brits think an interest in cars is somehow abhorrent?
bahumat42@reddit
I'm not representative of the population.
But here in this thread right now the comment came off as very pretentious.
Also I don't think an interest in cars is a bad thing it's just how you practise it may annoy people, such as the loud exhausts mentioned in this thread
inquisitiveimpulses@reddit
You Brits invented pretentious.
No, the comments went well beyond that. One guy said that petrol heads stopped their development at the age of 15. (Just because his daddy didn't give him the keys at 15 doesn't mean he can be smugly superior.)
Many, many, many ascribed things they can't possibly know about other people's motivations for modifying their cars specifically saying that they did it for attention, specifically ignorant of the fact that there are actual engineering reasons why one might modify one's car.
I have no idea what this guy's motivation was and modifying his car, and neither do you. Neither of us have heard it and if you heard it I'm 73% certain you wouldn't be able to tell whether it was legitimate power adding modification or whether it was just some lame cat-back exhaust that actually was done to make it louder. We don't know, but 98% of the Brits in this thread insisted that they do know. When obviously they don't.
By far and away, people were denigrating not just this guy but everyone who's ever modified a car. They were specifically denigrating this guy because apparently, if he's got an interest in cars, that should just stop at some point in life. Just because they live some sad existence where they're not still pursuing their former interests doesn't mean that this guy has a problem, and it's certainly doesn't have anything to do with his interest in kids. That was brought up over and over and over again.
You Brits have no place to talk; your age of consent is far lower. Why is it that so many posters were so all in on that little jab. Why is that even a thing? You're minimizing the experience of actual victims by using that as a cheap internet troll. This entire thread was pretty disgusting.
This is not only time I've noticed you Brits defensiveness about your poorly designed roadways and the fact that for whatever reason Brits don't seem to be able to have the space or resources or interest in having personal cars. There was a poster on this subreddit who had a brother in the ER after having attempted harm to himself, and he was wondering which agency he should call. I said, "Stick your thumb out and get a ride it's only a hundred miles."
I could literally be there in an hour and a half here. I could probably do it in under an hour. My daughter was medevaced one time- I was four and a half hours away; I made it in just over three. The Brits' response is that I don't understand cars aren't as common. So what? There are cars, get in one.
bahumat42@reddit
You do know nobody is ever going to read that right?
inquisitiveimpulses@reddit
Are you new to the internet? Are you new to modern technology voice to text? "Teal Deer" has been a thing since before you were born. It wasn't all that clever the first time someone used that little snarky jab.
bahumat42@reddit
Well I'm just confused why someone would write all that knowing it won't be read.
Are you doing alright?
inquisitiveimpulses@reddit
I'm just ducky. I'm wondering why you would continue to so ineffectively troll when it's clearly not working. Are you all right?
bahumat42@reddit

But rest assured I shan't waste any more empathy on you today.
Enjoy the rest of your evening.

It's not a British thing - as a nation we've always loved cars, and have had plenty of involvement in car development, motorsports (Half the F1 grid is based here), land speed records etc.
It's a Reddit thing, that's all.
inquisitiveimpulses@reddit
Well, that actually kind of makes sense people stuck at home feeling all manly by hurling insults.
The longer stroked English engine development led to an understanding of the relationship between stroke and torque. From an engineering standpoint, that always would have made sense, but I don't know if early development would have realized that so clearly without it.

Hello, female here.
I am in the car scene and i know plenty of single dudes with cars.
The question with women isnt necessarily the loudness of the car, nor even what he does with it. Alot of women who like guys with cars like the confident blokes who kind of model what their car represents.
So if your friend is going on 40 and in a early 2000s Corsa, its not got the peacock effect. If it is a modded BMW, then it may do.
Unfortunately, with the dating scene how it is, Its likely less to do with his car and more about how fuckint tough it is for single men navigating the dating world.
All youve really suggested is its about the car, but you havent really given us any information on the fella except your rather jaded opinion on what he likes to spend his money and time on.
Bit sad really. I know many happy single people in the car scene. And i also know plenty of shitty relationships in it too. The cars are just the culture. They dont make the people any better or worse at dating.

I can't speak for women but I've always found 40 year old boy racers a bit off.
It's a teenage pursuit that most guys mature out of. They'll still love cars but it usually translates into buying better/faster cars or tuning their car but without the additional bodywork and crappy popping exhaust.
I kinda judge them the same way I'd judge any 40 year old who is still obsessed with teenage pursuits; I find them to be incapable of growing up and basically view them as kids in 40 year old skin. It's hard to respect anyone who's trapped in the past.
Ambitious_Cat9886@reddit
Not your question, but as an autistic man with sensory issues i fucking hate those and it would put me off wanting to know anyone if they drove a car modded with one. Loud exhaust on his Vauxhall Corsa, run a mile.

Ravo93@reddit
I think the hanging about in a car park with teenagers is the bigger issue here.
Also, some people just like cars and performance cars tend to be louder. Is the loud exhaust attached to a shitbox Corsa 1.2? Or is it attached to a genuine performance orientated car.

JakeGrey@reddit
It might not be ideal, particularly if he puts so much time and money into working on the car that he doesn't have much left for doing anything else, but that would be true of any hobby.
Besides, it could certainly be worse. He could be hanging out in clubs doing coke or ket.
willwilson82@reddit
Can't see the issue with it myself, it's a hobby after all. Not as cool as pissing money up the wall to some people but a hobby non the less. Being a car guy in my early 40s means I'm probably a bit biased.
Has he told you he hangs around in car parks with other car people or are you assuming that based on his car? If he is, that's odd however meeting people online is the norm so I can't see how having a loud exhaust is affecting that.
Negative_Part5702@reddit

Given OP doesn't actually go, this really depends on where he's going and what he's doing. I'd say a lot of car enthusiasts skew millennial to older millennials, and some classic marques are just downright old people.
We're the ones who grew up in the age of souping up a shitheap with parts from Halfords on your mates drive - that seems to have died with our generation, so it tends to be millenials who have carried on into adulthood and now they have money to spend on actually interesting motors.
Look at all the big car channels on YouTube - it's mostly 35-45 year olds

blondererer@reddit
If he had the car, I wouldn’t get in it due to the exhaust. Feels chavvy. But, it’s his car, his choice.
If he was going to formal car meets, I wouldn’t choose to go but it wouldn’t put me off. However, I wouldn’t want to be around someone lurking in car parks at night. A lot of these have dangerous driving and racing when held around me.
WarmTransportation35@reddit
He hasn't grown up and women at that age see more in a man than what car he drives. Women who care about these things should be avoided in the first place.
Stage_Party@reddit

Same with those dickhead BMW drivers. Buy flashy car known to be unreliable, remove muffler, big time douche.
AstraofCaerbannog@reddit
I can’t say I’ve ever come across this, or ever even considered it… In itself it wouldn’t necessarily me off, but it’s possible I’d be put off by the personality traits that leads a late 30s man to choose an obnoxiously loud exhaust and spend time in car parks at night with similar men. I don’t know if I’d even need to know about this behaviour to figure out something was “up”.
Loads of men do weird things we don’t understand though. I mean a football fan goes to bars regularly with other men to watch even more men I running around on a screen, shouting occasionally. I think that’s pretty weird too, it’s just more normalised than exhaust guy.
If women were that picky that very few men would date, and as much as the internet would say, that’s not the case. Women do have lines, but it usually has to be a number of factors which scare us off, rather than one weird hobby.

Wanderlustforsun@reddit
It would really depend on a few variables. Is it obnoxiously loud or just louder than your average econobox? What sort of car is it? If he’s driving a Porsche then aside from the mid life crisis issues - you would expect a reasonably impressive exhaust note. If it’s a BMW m2 he may be a bit of a knob, likewise a Focus RS. If he’s driving a Corsa he’s definitely a “speedofile” If it’s a classic or collectible car or something interesting and a bit rare I’d cut this petrol head some slack - maybe even be a bit impressed with his good taste.
x99kjg@reddit
Think it depends on the car really, nothing wrong at any age with meeting fellow car enthusiasts who happen to like loud/modified cars. Let's say BMW M4, Audi RS6 etc. If he's in his 30s or 40s in a Corsa or a Fiesta with a loud exhaust, then his hard drive needs checking.

When I worked at B&Q there was a bitchy girl that worked on the checkouts. She once got into the car of someone that drove up to her in some modified BMW purely because of his car. Like that became her boyfriend and she literally met him because he said some pickup line as she was walking home.
One day whilst I were driving into work, she and him happened to be next to me at the lights and kept revving and driving all over the place as if I was going to race him in my Nissan Micra. Got a flood of text messages from her saying how good his car is and how he would beat me in a race.

I (39M) totally appreciate why owning a needlessly loud exhaust would be a deterrent for women who are 30+.
Women who are 30+ often look for partners who will consider their needs and are aware of the consequences of their own actions (and vice versa of course). Also, people aged 30+ usually don’t have the extra time and energy to help a new partner learn how to be a considerate person.
Therefore, for people who are aged 30+ and looking for a new partner, it is normal to be concerned by any signs that the person they like might be inconsiderate and/or lacking awareness, even if the signs are as simple as having a loud exhaust.

Personally I find anyone driving a car with an overtly loud exhaust (especially when the exhaust is likely worth more than the car), incredibly annoying. That said I get it's a hobby and not everyone does it to be an AH, but it just gives off some sort of rebellions teenager that can't afford a nice car so they slap a loud exhaust on their shit one kind of vibe.
I'm a guy and even I'd be embarrassed to get in a shitbanger with tons of mods to make it sound powerful, so I think it would be enough to throw anyone off - ESPECIALLY in the age bracket he's looking for...

One part of me thinks that having something as anti-social as a loud exhaust or any annoying car mod means he still lives with his mum and wets the bed.
However, the part of me that isn’t a teenager thinks if that’s his hobby and it makes him happy, then fair play to him. I would also say that he may need to modify how much he indulges in his hobby. The loud exhaust will put a lot of women off and hanging around in car parks will put a hell of a lot more off. I was a serious gamer when I was younger but it’s a time vacuum and I like to spend time with my partner and our friends and family, so it’s not something I spend too much time or money on now. The whole car park thing is a red flag. I'm in my 40s and a huge petrol head, but stopped going to local 'meets' over a decade ago. I have my sensible daily car, but I also have a road legal track car that's loud, and I also ride a motorbike, which again is fairly loud.
The volume of the exhaust is a byproduct of power mods, so it's not entirely avoidable unless I want to spend an absolute fortune on fully custom exhausts.
That being said, there are times if I have the track car out for a drive, that i do feel a bit of a tool. It's fine on a racetrack but trying to drive gently through a town/village with a loud car does make me feel like a twat. So yeh, I can understand a woman's reluctance to engage.

Most women don't tend to date gay guys
HappyLittleHermit@reddit
Yes. Honestly 22+ and doing that is weird. Its a way for teens who have just got a licence to go "look at me!" It's a step up from a bottle in your back tyre of a bike
nucleargeorge@reddit
lol, you should tell him. My female best friend was kind enough to tell me that being the big swinging dick in a band wasn’t the turn on for most women that I thought it was and I’m forever grateful.
Gullible-Function649@reddit
No, it’s sexy af!
CrystalKirlia@reddit
Yes 100%. I'm autistic and your loud exhaust causes me physical pain due to my sensory sensitivities. Also, small children have sensitive ears and it will hurt them, too. It's rather selfish to put your wants above children's and the disabled's needs, isn't it? What kind of a father would he be if he puts his wants above a child's needs?
Just my thought pattern... I want a good father for my future children.

As a mid thirties man, clearly my opinion is relevant here.
This hurts to say, as I used to absolutely be that guy. But I think there becomes a point where subtly is something worth practicing.

It sounds like he's a car guy. It's fine to be into cars. Honestly, leave the guy be.

Unless you are 17 and it’s your first car, it’s a red flag for literally everyone not just women.
SarkyMs@reddit
It is a red flag at any age.

Let's be honest here, when he was 20 he probably had a fit bird in the passenger seat. She went on to audition for love island...he went on to work at your place.
At some point it went from attractive to sad and he didn't get the hint.
geeered@reddit
Ignoring the rest; if that's his hobby and social life, then he's likely mostly meeting other men.
The women he does meet and probably into it, but also will have loads of guys after them.
Beginning-End9098@reddit
No. But the correspondingly small penis will be a disappointment.
oktimeforplanz@reddit
Will it put off most women? Yes, absolutely. Does that matter? Depends. If he prefers a loud exhaust and hanging out with 19 year olds in car parks over having a relationship, that's his cross to bear, isn't it? There are women out there who like the same things, but I know they're relatively uncommon compared to every other type of woman. I personally wouldn't even consider someone with an obnoxious exhaust who wants to sit around in car parks. Did that once when I was 17 and I won't do it again.
Cuppa-Tea-Biscuit@reddit
I mean he might want to modify his taste to women who are into that sort of thing and accept that it’s a fairly niche interest?
