I don’t think it was specifically 100 years ago. I’m referring more so to the 50s and 60s, for which my primary reason would be high union membership. Collective bargaining allowed for more democratic workplaces, which ultimately begets good social outcomes. I think you’re absolutely correct. I think a majority of social issues are manufactured in order to distract from the economic ones, which are the true cause of people’s misery. People don’t have kids because they cannot afford the opportunity cost of taking time away from work. People don’t have sex because third spaces (neither work nor home) are being eroded by an increased, manufactured sense of isolation.

Ok, I get that you’re coming from a perspective of Christian ethics, I understand why you’d come to those conclusions.

We’re agreed that there is currently a social ill, but I think I might contend on a few ways to solve it. I think the communal ties part is spot on, though I am a leftist so that’s obvious I suppose. I think I take a bit of an issue with the prescription of limiting sex before marriage. From what I’ve seen, the data is pretty conclusive that abstinence is not a particularly effective method of preventing sexual activity. I think you might be conflating solutions for individuals to a broader societal solution, which I don’t blame you for at all. I think it’s just worth working off the knowledge that humans will always have sex, in or out of wedlock, and that is doesn’t necessarily have to be a societal ill in and of itself.

I think the food bank point is also interesting - again, I think interpersonally, it is absolutely a moral good to support, but I think as a societal issue, hunger can be much better addressed through social programs (i.e. food stamps, UBI) rather than just relying on the good will of those who can afford to give.

It depends. If you change nothing in your life, you're likely correct. However, you may just have been stuck in the same place with the same crowd for the past 5 years and just haven't created any opportunities for yourself. Changing jobs, moving somewhere different, and/or taking up an extracurricular may allow you to create opportunities to find someone. Also doing everything you can to be attractive in terms of looks (working out, clothing yourself properly, getting your teeth fixed if need be, taking care of your skin) and smell (proper hygiene including oral hygiene) makes a big difference.

Millennials and older definitely. Even though they are a minority of men, I see what leads to this. Literally not putting in the effort to talk to women or actually seek a relationship. If you tried talking to a woman once 5 years ago, I don’t know how you expect to ever get a girlfriend or get laid. Some guys I met take the female approach and just assume it will happen like magic. I don’t recommend a man ever take this approach unless he’s a celebrity or extremely attractive. Other guys I know have been out of shape, broke, or too shy. You can get a girlfriend with some shortcomings, but you can’t have a laundry list of shortcomings you’re not actually trying to fix and expect a girlfriend to just walk into your life.
