Article transcription:
The Sri Lankan Army says it has implemented quarantine measures for soldiers at the army camp in the Veditalativu area in Mannar, following a flu outbreak among a group of army personnel.
Sri Lanka Army spokesperson confirmed that around 25 soldiers have contracted the flu, with several requiring hospitalization. One soldier has been transferred to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (IDH) for advanced treatment.
In response to the outbreak, the Mannar health officials have taken steps to quarantine nearly 500 soldiers within the camp itself to control the spread of the viral flu.
The flu outbreak, which had commenced from November 11, continues to be closely monitored by health and military authorities to ensure effective containment and timely medical intervention.

It should be noted that there is (as of yet) no evidence that this is related to H5 or any other novel virus

We're discussing this in r/H5N1_AvianFlu too. I have no idea if this has anything to do with H5N1 or any other type of avian flu. But I don't know of even one other case in the last several years where several hundred young, fit, and healthy men from just one military camp were quarantined only because of simple seasonal flu and nothing else, with 25 of them going to a hospital and one needing even more advanced care.

True, but this would look a lot worse than 25 people in the hospital if it were bird flu.
Brilliant-Truth-3067@reddit
The high percentage of hospitalizations is concerning though

Right especially for young. Healthy, soldiers. Wish we could just get a few decades without the flu but so many stupid, selfish people and moreover people without options to take the proper measures when sick (like staying home) or preparing.

Sounds awfully familiar to how the Spanish Flu started.

Something new on the loose
Idobro@reddit
Yeah, It seems that there’s some stronger flus developing right now. Might go pick up some extra things in case there’s a quarantine
Far_Out_6and_2@reddit
Good idea

My neighbours whole families on both sides of me are completely incapacitated by a flu going around, in like, we haven't seen them for a week. It's actually getting kinda scary
Idobro@reddit
I work with youth so it’s always risky, stay safe!
AffirmingToe15@reddit
It's just a regular flu outbreak. Nothing really out of the ordinary
RealAnise@reddit
Young, healthy, fit people almost never have serious cases of seasonal flu. 25 of them from just one group at one military base going to a hospital because of nothing but simple seasonal flu is something that does not happen. There's more to it.

From thailand medical:
The unusual severity of symptoms reported among some soldiers has caught the attention of local health authorities. Reports indicate that several individuals have experienced acute neurological symptoms, prompting speculation that this strain may have unique or aggressive characteristics.

These are young strong soldiers. Hospitalized?
