Should I replace my Ryzen 7 3800X with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D ?

This is after a lot of thought because I mainly play mmo games. I know that overall for gaming it might be a downgrade but the huge cache the x3d provides really helps in mmos, that's what I found after a lot of research. Is it worth it ? What's your thoughts ?
P.S. 1: I don't plan to upgrade to the next gen anytime soon.
P.S. 2: I have 16 GB 3200 DDR4 CL16 ram and a 3060 RTX 12GB gpu, I won't have any bottleneck with the 5700x3d right ?
rizzzeh@reddit
there is no downgrade in any way. 5700x3D is faster in all scenarios.
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
So you believe is it worth it ? In my country 5700x3d costs around 200 euros and the 5800x3d is \~320 euros
rizzzeh@reddit
yep, 5700x3D is the second best gaming cpu for your motherboard. 5800x3d is better by a small margin but at this price, not a great value for money
DarkRacing@reddit
When I go onto Amazon I see one for $200 and one for $439. They BOTH say 5800x3d but I dono what the difference is?????
Braveless@reddit
One may be sold by Amazon while the other is third party seller.
DarkRacing@reddit
Til!
DarkRacing@reddit
Oooooh...shit, damn man, derp, ha! Lol. Thank you kindly!
kikimaru024@reddit
They're the exact same product.
Infected_Toe@reddit
Negligible. Buy the cheapest.
Assaltwaffle@reddit
Uh, there shouldn’t be ANY difference. CPUs aren’t like GPUs where they are different board partners.
There is next to no difference between each CPU and there should be no difference in price outside of super-niche “top bin” CPUs confirmed by overclocking resellers.
Infected_Toe@reddit
I was refeering to the difference between the 5700X3D and 5800X3D. The difference is negligible.
Assaltwaffle@reddit
Alright, but the guy you replied to said "both say 5800X3D." Yes, the 5700X3D is only slightly worse.
Infected_Toe@reddit
I know, but I was sort of continuing the comment thread.
Diedead666@reddit
I saw now they are 450$ brandnew, you can get a barebones am4 7600 for that much... (I got the 5800x3d when it first came out was worth it them not now) Used u can find them for 300..
MichiganRedWing@reddit
They're usually found for around 160-170 euros on AliExpress. Buy from a reputable seller and you're good.
tutocookie@reddit
5800x3d is worth maaaybe 20 euro over the 5700x3d. So between the two at those prices the 5700x3d is a no brainer
BigSmackisBack@reddit
With the offset from putting the 3800x on ebay, the 5700x3d is a no brainer.
Citizen8024@reddit
I switched from a 3900x to a 5800x3d few months back as my focus shifted from productivity to mainly gaming.
FPS went Up a Bit, butnwhat improved a Lot we're the lower FPS. Gaming felt was smoother and was morenl comforting to.my eye.
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
Yeah I've talked with people who have the same cpu as you and they told me the same: great lows and almost no stutter in games. Thanks for the info , I will definitely go for the 5700X3D soon
enso1RL@reddit
5700x3d or the 5800x3d is a huge upgrade from 3800x. They are a new generation of architecture from the previous 3000 series, which always means it's a combination of being more efficient, better core clocks, and better IPC (instructions per clock), which means how much much instructions or tasks a CPU can complete within a clock cycle.
The 5700x3d is very close to a 5800x3d. So close that the performance difference can in some cases can be negligible. Get the 5700x3d if it saves you a meaningful amount of money, otherwise either is fine.
And yes, MMO's benefit wayyyyy more from the 3d vache compared to most other games according to my own testing.
MMO's are very cpu heavy. The cache that sits directly on the chip is basically dedicated RAM that the CPU has instantaneous access to. It reduces the amount of times your CPU has to make round trips to your actual system RAM to fetch data. These round trips (although already decently fast) are still quite expensive round trips to make. Less round trips needed to make to fetch data from system RAM means that your CPU can effectively chew through more data quicker, and feed whatever information it needs to your GPU faster along the way. MMO's always have a crazy amount of players, a big open world, and lots of effects popping off at any given scene. The faster your CPU can process all of that pizazz, the more FPS you'll see
So yes, if you play MMO's specifically then you absolutely must get an x3d chip. And yes, you will see performance uplifts upgrading from a 3800x
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
Thanks for this reply, really nice and simple explanation. I will definitely buy the 5700x3d , after all I mainly play mmos. Would you say I will see a day-night difference in fps in scenarios that a lot of players are on-screen ? For example, now with my 3800x when 70\~100 players are fighting I sit at 30\~50 fps at best, with a lot of fps drop even when im back at 60 fps.
enso1RL@reddit
I can only share my experience with Black Desert online since that's the only MMO I've been playing. Haven't had time to test other games
I used to own a 5900x before swapping to a 5800x3d for gaming
Theres a town in BDO called Heidel that a lot of players use as their main base. Before when I ride into town, my fps would. drop to about 70-80 fps before stabilizing around 100-110 as all the in game assets and other players finish rendering on my screen. Now the lowest I see is 130fps before it stabilizes at around 160-170fps. This is with me playing at ultra wide 3440x1440p with a 3090 btw.
Black desert's developers use their own in-house game engine and it's kind of notorious for being poorly optimized, so it may vary from game to game. Needless to say though, the performance uplift for me in this game was insane. And that's moving from a non 3d cache of the same generation to a 3d vcache chip
You will be moving from an older generation non 3d cache chip to a newer generation chip that has 3d vache . I think you'll be in for a good ride haha
Happy gaming!
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
Brother, I'm a longtime bdo player too hahah. Bdo was on my mind when i was writing this post, but i said mmos in general because i didnt expect anyone here to know this game 😂 I mostly want to get the 5700x3d for node wars and siege, my fps is shit when i pvp and 100+ people are fighting. Have you had any experience with largescale pvp with your new chip? What differences you noticed ?
enso1RL@reddit
Oh cool, I hope you are enjoying the game! Haha
And no, I don't have any node wars / siege / large scale PvP experience to chime in on. Sorry :/
The closest comparison I can do is world bosses. I just did garmoth for example with about maybe 25 or so other players on my screen. My fps stayed around 140fps or so with the options to hide other adventurers / effects turned off
Large scale PVP has a lot more stuff going on though so I fully expect fps to not be so high. If I were to guess I then I think the lowest it can go on my system is around 70. This a guess based on previous events like the termian fishing event where there were like 100 or so players on my screen
Hope that gives you a rough idea though. BDO seriously needs an engine overhaul
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
70 fps with 100+ people on screen is perfect man. My current situation is that in node wars I usually get drops from 60-70 to like 30-40 dps, and then when big fights happen I sit around ~40fps (and sometimes i even get down to 25-30, yikes). And this happens in all graphics, there is no difference if im playing on lowest or in medium/high. Thats when I realised that its not my gpu's fault and it's the cpu cache that im missing and it can't load fast enough all the players in my screen as they also move so fast (novas and musas im looking at you). So that's the problem I wanna solve with the 5700x3d , if I can get stable 60-70 in big fights I'm good, I dont expect to have 100+ fps in these scenarios. BDO's engine is so bad at handling all this data, but I'm not expecting them to transfer this game in their new engine. Maybe in 2030 if the game still exists lol
enso1RL@reddit
Yeah the cache will help. There will for sure be an uplift 👍 but I don't know how much in the context of really big sieges or node wars
I can't recommend it enough, but if you haven't done so already, do everything that's recommended in ACanadianDude's fps guide, specifically the affinity tweak that locks the game to 6 physical cores and no SMT/hyperthreading. It worked wonders for BDO
outside of this, I can also suggest getting CL14 ram if youre looking to squeeze out every bit of performance possible. It will net you an extra 10% boost or so.
Good luck my friend. Happy gaming!
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
I have done everything on canadiandude's guide but tbh I haven't seen any major difference in largescale pvp. I have CL16 ram so im not in a rush for new, at least in the near future. My experience with turkey boss was 20-25 fps on medium settings (others effects off) with 80-100 people. So yeah, I really need that new cpu 🤣
RavenH1804@reddit
Short answer: Yes Long Answer: Yes!
DarkRacing@reddit
I looked again, im still unclear but I think one is am5 capable and the other isn't? I think. Don't quote me, lol
RDOG907@reddit
Imo no, I would not do the upgrade. I would just save money until you can upgrade to a new system.
At this point, doing an inter generation am4 swap is a waste of money unless you can get the newer chip at a significant discount or are coming from a 1xxx or 2xxx ryzen chip
In the meantime, turn on precision boost overdrive in your bios and max out the clock speed. Turn off cool and quiet. Make sure your ram is running at 3200mhz via XMP you could also bump the infinity fabric clock up one notch if you have the thermal headroom and it is stable.
If you want a better short term and cheap system performance, add 16GB more 3200mhz ram. You will notice quite a difference depending on the program(s) you run.
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
My ram is running at 3000mhz at the moment, I have tried XMP but windows wont boot when i enable it, for some reason (maybe because im a noob in pc knowledge) pc only boots when I set manually the 3000mhz. Do you think this can be the source of my problem and upgrading my cpu isnt the move here ? In my ignorance, I didn't think the extra 200mhz would be that much of a difference. Adding 16GB is very cheap, like 30-40 euros, but will it solve my problem ? Because I've come to a conclusion that cpu cache is what I'm missing the most.
RDOG907@reddit
I'm not sure, you can poke around forums for help with your ram issue, but 3000 should be ok. Adding ram just made everything run better because games can front load more data, but it isn't a silver bullet for increasing fps, but it did help me with stutter in games.
If you can pick one up for cheap, I suppose it is a decent option, but the 7600x is the same amount brand new, and it outperforms the 5800x3d in some cases
I think there are even black Friday combo deals coming up for combo kits online.
I am just putting out there what I would do in your situation it might not make sense from a mony standpoint but the money you put in now is wasted when you can jump to an am5 platform and have drop in performance gains further down the road 4 years from now.
The thing that gimps the 5x00x3d chips is the clock speed limitations, which are removed on the am5 platform.
Ordinary_Block_4131@reddit
Going from 3800x to a 5700x3d is a downgrade ??? Who told you that bs ? And no ,there shouldn't be any bottleneck.
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
I saw in some comparison sites that overall it's a little better. Maybe because of the faster clock speed and more threads? I don't know.
Grydian@reddit
Don't use userbenchmark they lie.
shrroom@reddit
If not them, what should people use?
UraniumDisulfide@reddit
Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed on youtube, or TechPowerUp.com.
shrroom@reddit
Thanks
shrroom@reddit
Why are people downvoting a genuine question?😂
Grydian@reddit
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/ Use this to look at what GPU you are considering and it will show you relative performance to other GPUs. For instance it shows the 4070 super losing by 2 percent to the GRE in raster work loads.
tutocookie@reddit
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html
This one's handy too for gpus
M4jkelson@reddit
Anything else
musclecard54@reddit
What do they lie about and why would they want to
Sakakaki@reddit
I wish people wouldn't downvote for asking. But yeah, it seems AMD killed the userbenchmark guy's family and the guy will completely ignore actual data in order to make Intel look better on every comparison while also sounding extremely bitter about it.
OkFeed9564@reddit
Are you new to this sub?
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
yep.
musclecard54@reddit
Kinda lol
hikingjungle@reddit
Userbenchmaek is even banned on the intel subreddit xd
M4jkelson@reddit
About eveything. Why? To make AMD look bad on every corner because apparently someone from AMD pissed in userbenchmarks owner cereal 15 years ago
owdee@reddit
They are BLATANT Intel shills and will straight up lie about the performance of Intel CPUs versus AMD CPUs.
IndyPFL@reddit
Their latest reviews have been dunking on Intel pretty hard, funny enough.
owdee@reddit
I avoid the site like the plague, but one I saw dunked on the newest gen while still recommending the prior gen over anything AMD.
IndyPFL@reddit
Yeah, ironic since the Ultra line struggles more with gaming, but apparently AMD is only good for gaming which is a bad thing...?
I worry for the mental health of their writer.
armacitis@reddit
They lie about everything vs AMD because the owner is insane
FunBuilding2707@reddit
Guy googled Userbenchmark lol. Do comparison from actual reviewers, specifically for FFXIV Endwalker since it's relevant for MMO performance. It's a massive jump of performance when going to 5700X3D.
WiTHCKiNG@reddit
The additional L3 cache is what makes it so much better, will last way longer
Ordinary_Block_4131@reddit
Naaah ,the 5700x3d is superior, if you got the cash go for it ,you will notice a big difference. Especially in gaming.
frankd412@reddit
It's got the cache
zen1706@reddit
What comparison do you look at? Userbenchmark?
ActOfThrowingAway@reddit
This person isn't even trying to make that statement, they're just explaining how they were misled. This sub is idiotic for downvoting someone that was misled being corrected.
Assaltwaffle@reddit
Welcome to Reddit.
ActOfThrowingAway@reddit
It baffles how the people in this sub upvote posts like "I want to build a PC for my kid to play Minecraft, is the RTX 4090 a good pair for the 4th gen i7" but act the absolute opposite in comments if OP even so much as argues that "oh a friend told me i7s are pretty good CPUs which is why I thought that". We as a community will not beat the elitism allegations like this.
NickJunho@reddit
Userbenchmark? Please don't use that site, the worse site to do comparison.
apmspammer@reddit
Don't trust that site. It's probably user benchmarks they are very anti amd.
bobsim1@reddit
They have the same amount of threads. What did you read?
DigitalDecades@reddit
The 5800X is faster than the 5700X3D in some non-gaming workloads but the 5700X3D is faster than the 3800X in everything.
KKLC547@reddit
Yeah get it on AliExpress as it is only about $130 there which is an absolute steal
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
Can't seem to find it on AliExpress...can you post the link please ?
KKLC547@reddit
"Computer Hardware Global Store" is the seller. It isn't as low as I mentioned but it definitely did hit that price in the last few days
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
I can get it for 160 euros atm, maybe I'll wait some days to see how the price goes untill black friday hits
KKLC547@reddit
Also take note of the import fees and rules that your country may have
GlobalHawk_MSI@reddit
If gaming is the main focus or one of the primary then its good as the X3D gang are meant for gaming anyway. I would love to get the 5700X3D if my motherboard's VRMs would still be on safer parameters if powering a CPU past 65w.
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
Wait now you make me unsure...What's motherboard's VRMs and would I be safe with my upgrade ? I have an asus A520M-A, and afaik I only need to update bios for the 5700x3d to work. Do I need to be careful about anything else ?
GlobalHawk_MSI@reddit
I think it will still work. CPU socket compatibility is no issue as anything that can fit in an AM4 board should work.
It is just that it may give stability problems in the future but only on worse case scenarios or when overclocking. In my case, it can still work but then again there is a reason people advise me to only fit 5700X and below for my 4-year old B450 board.
baskura@reddit
I did similar and gaming is so smooth now.
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
Noticed a great fps gain ?
baskura@reddit
Very much so!
Elastichedgehog@reddit
I'd probably spend the money on a new GPU first.
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
But why ? Graphics quality is not a problem, I can keep 60+ in high settings in the majority of games I play. And especially in mmos I dont care about graphics, I can play with potato settings as long as I can mantain 60+ fps in scenarios where there are a lot of players in one place.
1965BenlyTouring150@reddit
I went from a 3800X to a 5800X3D and it was a massive upgrade. I probably would have bought a 5700X3D instead if it was out at the time. You might not notice a huge improvement with your current video card but it will give you room for an upgrade later.
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
Yeah I probably wont see a huge upgrade in most games, but I mainly want to get this cpu for mmos where everyone is saying that x3d shine.
Dudi4PoLFr@reddit
Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Yes ASAP
Also, who told you that it will be downgraded from the 3800X? Userbenchmark?
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
Yeah I've seen some sites telling that overall is slightly better but it seems that's not the case lol
Dudi4PoLFr@reddit
It is absolutely not the case. The 5700X3D will be better in every test, game, and software compared to your current 3800X.
Antenoralol@reddit
Who told you that?
I went from a 3700x to a 5800X3D and I've seen a night and day difference.
I'm also an MMO player - I play FFXIV and the occasional bit of WoW.
A 5700X3D can run up to a 4090 no problem so I doubt a 3060 will "bottleneck" it.
Antenoralol@reddit
The only reason I have a 5800X3D instead of a 5700X3D is the 5700X3D did not exist when I madce the upgrade.
5700X3D is only 4.5% slower than a 5800X3D while costing like 40% less money.
FatBoyDiesuru@reddit
Absolutely worth the upgrade.
LordCommanderTaurusG@reddit
I went from a 3600 to a 5800x3D and the difference is night and day
ArchusKanzaki@reddit
If you got very good deal, I don't see why not. You're basically maxxing-out the AM4 platform, which probably will serve you good enough until AM6 looking at current trend lol.
Background_Yam9524@reddit
Abso-frickin-lutely. That's a killer upgrade.
demighost@reddit
I've been contemplating swapping out my 5800x for the 5700x3d.. and GPU upgrade to skip am5 completely. It's always tough.
AdBasic2725@reddit
Yes yes what are you waiting on YES!
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
yeah I know that now its the time to buy it because later the prices will rise like 5800 did.
AdBasic2725@reddit
If you’re on 1440P you have a Slight bottleneck 4k you’ll be fine I have mines with an 4080S
Still-Inevitable-296@reddit
I had a issue with bottlenecking, had a Ryzen 7 5800x which I had clocked at 5ghz and a RX 7800XT gpu usage on almost every game I played was hovering at 55-70% and ran horribly. Swapped my 5800x out for a 5700x3d I got for a good price on AliExpress and now my gpu usage hovers 90-99% and frame rate is far better and more smooth. This was in my case may not be the same for others
MONGSTRADAMUS@reddit
I am in similar situation as you , I am wondering will 5700x3d drop lower than 180 which is the price its going at microcenter right now. I checked my b350 board supports all the 5000 series chips which I was pleasantly surprised to see.
salvageBOT@reddit
No you shouldn't. Get the 5700G.
Grydian@reddit
Why are you suggesting such a stupid idea?
UngodlyPain@reddit
I did it, got a 5700x3d from AliExpress for $139 after some coupons. 10/10 would suggest.
And in no way will it be a downgrade, whoever told you that was full of shit.
Games vary on what they use exactly... But the extra cache and the much faster zen 3 architecture will easily overcome the like 200mhz in literally every scenario.
Maybe a 5800x to 5700x3d would be a downgrade in a small number of games that don't use cache much... But 3800x? Is inferior in more ways than just cache.
astro143@reddit
I went from a 3700x to a 5800X3D, my average FPS is about the same, but my 1% lows are much higher and makes everything feel smoother. So that was a win. Then as the next two? three? generations of CPUs have come out, look who's still up there on top in performance! X3D chips have outstanding longevity so far. Especially if you're gaming at a higher than 1080p resolution.
h2okopf@reddit
Yes. Do it
Autobahn97@reddit
Yes, so long as your BIOS supports it, update your BIOS and pop in the 5700x3d and it will be a big upgrade for you. If you find yourself running out of RAM then upgrade that next but 16GB is not too bad.
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
I thought about my ram being the problem, but I think 16GB is enough and the cpu cache is the main problem for my fps while having a lot of data (a shit ton of people in mmo games) in my screen. Or I'm wrong and it's also a ram issue I don't know xD
Autobahn97@reddit
16GB is OK unless you are big into multitasking - meaning you have a web browser open with a bunch of tabs and maybe other apps open while playing your games. Good thing is RAM is fairly cheap if you need to upgrade.
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
Yeah it's very cheap. I've tried playing with everything closed and only my game + discord open and I still got the fps drop, so I don't think it's the a ram issue. 16GB is good for now.
zyz8@reddit
Im due for the same upgrade. 3800xt to 5700x3d and I will get extra RAM as well, because 16gb are really pushing it when I play some games
gzrfox@reddit
Yes.
Koda_Ryu@reddit
Just save your money get a 7800x3d
Grydian@reddit
Whoever said its a downgrade is lying to you. Even with the down clocked cores the IPC is vastly improved over zen2 that it wont matter. Sure in like 1/4 of games a 5800x is slightly faster but a 3800x will lose in every game to the 5700x3d.
Sweaty_Blueberry_449@reddit
i am curious if upgrading from 3060 to something like 4070/7800XT will give better fps than upgrading from 3800x to 5700x3d?
titifidosskkaje@reddit
Depends on the game. Minecraft? No Wukong Black myth? Yes
Ok_Seaworthiness6534@reddit
thats a huge upgrade actually
cmacy6@reddit
I went from a 2700x to a 5700x3d a couple months ago and it was a big upgrade. I also have a 3060 12gb and if anything is bottlenecking, it’ll be the gpu. I’m planning on upgrading my 3060 to something else in the near future.
I’d recommend upgrading to 32gb of ram if it’s not too expensive. It’s a very worthy upgrade and you’ll notice it
another1bites2dust@reddit
The upgrade doesn't justify the value that you will spend.
msp2081@reddit
5700X3D is a great buy. You won't regret it. I just got one last week.
Accomplished_Emu_658@reddit
Don’t listen to bottleneck calculators they aren’t very trustworthy. Even with slightly lower clock speed the 5700x3d is a better chip. You can also get some of your money back selling the 3800x
MrPopCorner@reddit
Why would you think a 5700x3D is a downgrade from a 3800X?
L1ghtbird@reddit
Man for MMOs you can't have a fast enough CPU, do it!
NewestAccount2023@reddit
Yea
Long-Patient604@reddit
You won't have any bottlenecks with the R7 5700X3D. The R7 5800X3D is better but only by a small margin and for the price the R7 5700X3D offers great value.
theSurgeonOfDeath_@reddit
I would first check if it's cpu or gpu bottleneck.
But yes 5700x3d would be great upgrade. Mostly because I estimate the supply gonna dry.
So in worst case you are prepared for gpu upgrade
GasiusGR@reddit (OP)
Yeah it's not the gpu, I've tried every possible setting and my fps still drop when a lot of people are appearing on my screen, regardless of the graphics.
theSurgeonOfDeath_@reddit
Yeah then it's cpu
damien24101982@reddit
That would be a big upgrade
FantasticBike1203@reddit
Yes
