Everything in the world is about sex, except sex. Sex is about power.
darklightmatter@reddit
A scene from GoT comes to mind: Some moron, probably Tyrion (for this scene he was a moron) tells Cersei "knowledge is power" or some shit, thinking he was profound. Cersei simply tells her guards to execute him, but orders them to stop before they follow through. She gives them a few more orders, telling them to march around or something, and tells Tyrion "power is power".
My point is that what you said is pseudo-intellectual nonsense. Sex is about having sex. "Everything in the world is about sex" is a gooner take. Videogames aren't about sex. Working isn't about sex. Going on that family trip isn't about sex. Hanging with your buds isn't about sex (Having a gay orgy isn't hanging with your buds).
Nimbus20000620@reddit
It was little finger, not Tyrion.
And the quote is from the office. It’s said by a character that the show doesn’t want you to find likable or sensible.

LeiningensAnts@reddit
I was born into a loving family and I can assure you, it's a nice perk, and ought to come standard with every new life, but there are so many more joys the world has to offer besides what ought to be the human baseline.
Mushroomman642@reddit
Yes, and even this thing that ought to be the baseline is still so far away from many people's reality that it sounds like a fairy tale.
"Your parents actually loved and supported you? You must be lying, there's no way!"

Absolutely the most uncomfortable fact I've ever had to come to grips with in my life, tbh; feels like I should have survivor's guilt, for being born into a perfectly normal situation which then, as it turns out, is better than like 95% of other homes. Jesus absolutely fucking wept.

you live your live to do things you like. sometimes that includes having a kid, but the main goal is to live a happy life, kids or not
captaincw_4010@reddit
Well in an evolutionary sort of way yes the only real point of life is to create more life and everything else is only to further that goal in some way. Plants and animals are content with just the one mission just us humans love to side quest
JSchade@reddit
Well actually no, there is no point to life in an evolutionary sense. Passing on your genetics is not a mission or a goal, it’s just what happens to species that are more fit for survival in their particular circumstances. It doesn’t even necessitate that those genes are “better” than the genes that did not make it. All it means is that one’s genetic pool was better suited for a particular set of circumstances compared to some other set of genes. Attempting to add some sort of subjective value to evolution (such as implying that those who reproduce have “won” at life or that those who have more kids are better than those that don’t) is a complete and utter misinterpretation of the concept.
seastatefive@reddit
That's because human side quests are vital to evolutionary success. Such as someone with a side quest to create a better weapon to hunt animals or kill other humans, or a better cooking recipe to extract more nutrition from things that cannot otherwise be eaten safely.
Unfortunately, modern civilisation has delinked human sidequests from human genetic success.
Joshgg13@reddit
Why is that unfortunate? We've just moved up a tier in Maslow's hierarchy of needs
seastatefive@reddit
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a fiction because there is no self actualisation layer.
Joshgg13@reddit
I mean, that's your opinion. And you're using it to argue that any hobby which you do just for fun and not to enhance your evolutionary success is basically pointless, which is a pretty cynical way of looking at things

I don't think ordering takeout for every meal and expensive coffee subscriptions really help you with getting laid that much.
Yes socializing costs money but genuinely not that much. My old favorite dance club let you in with like 10 bucks and even post COVID it caps out at 20 at its absolute worst.
Motor-Delivery-869@reddit
But then you have to spend money on food drinks transport, and generally are more encouraged to take better care of yourself and your appearance, as well as pay for whatever thing your doing. Not saying that it breaks the bank but you definitely feel the difference in spending as opposed to quiet times
SunderedValley@reddit
Very much true that. Hair cuts, nice clothes, restaurants, Uber rides etc, it's certainly something you feel but baselines still spend way in excess of what actually benefits them directly socially.

MalekithofAngmar@reddit
3-6 months expenditures as emergency fund is a good way to be safe. Your emergency fund is "working" by preventing you from having to butcher the golden goose in an emergency.
GenesectX@reddit
investment advice on r/greentext is wild
Tuarangi@reddit
I literally have less than 10p (about 7c I guess?) in my bank at all times, some income is invested in the markets, the rest in accounts paying interest monthly. My current account costs me nothing but equally has no benefits beyond access to a saver. I'd rather have money earning me 5-6% a month and move it in the day before a bill is due. You can have an emergency fund and balance debts while still making it work for you.
BathTubBand@reddit
Do LSD shake it up, Big Dawg! :)
tomboy_titties@reddit
So 60-72% a year?
Sure.
Tuarangi@reddit
Sorry I meant it was that amount paid annually but I get the payment monthly
GottKomplexx@reddit
Isnt it tedious to move money around when the bills are due?
Tuarangi@reddit
Takes me maybe 20-30 seconds to log into app 1, do the transfer to my account, confirm it's in app 2. UK faster payments are generally all but instant
Joshgg13@reddit
10p is 13¢ fyi. The £ is more valuable than the $
Wesley_Skypes@reddit
So I have investments and am doing OK, but I always have a few K in current account because what you are suggesting feels really unwieldy for the amount of bills and sundries I have. Are you doing this every day? Are you only responsible for you or do you have a family? Not criticising btw, I'm just trying to apply this to my life and it feels massively unmanageable.
Few-Frosting-4213@reddit
You should definitely build an emergency fund first. You are going to run into liquidity issues sooner or later for not much additional upside.
Wesley_Skypes@reddit
Exactly. But even without thinking of that aspect, it just feels crazy unwieldy. Now I know Americams use their CC for a lot of things because it's beneficial (here in Ireland it is less beneficial as we don't get all those perks really and we don't need to build credit scores) but having a few K in my current account at all times just feels easier and safer to me..
Moritzxd@reddit
2-3 month of salary saved the rest invested as a general rule of thumb
Few-Frosting-4213@reddit
Keep roughly 6month-12 months of expenses as an emergency fund and dump the rest into investments.
Joshgg13@reddit
Could your investment portfolio not act as an emergency fund?
Few-Frosting-4213@reddit
The emergency fund protects you from having to sell investments at a loss or taking on short term capital gains tax instead of long term capital gains tax during emergencies.
Joshgg13@reddit
Fair enough, I've never had nearly enough money to worry about paying CGT lol

undreamedgore@reddit
Real shit, how do you invest? Like I get the theory of it, but don't really want to day trade. So I don't know who to talk to or where to go.
kachunkachunk@reddit
Find a platform you like (Questrade, Wealthsimple, or even your bank). Set up a recurring investment/transfer of $200 a month or something into your account, and buy an ETF that looks diversified and performs well. XEQT is a popular one and I'd easily recommend that.
Then just kinda let things grow for a decade or few. Ensure you're also taking advantage of any government regulated/registered investment or saving accounts.
Regret1836@reddit
You don't really need to day trade at all, a good start would be to get a ROTH IRA and contribute your maximum each year, then invest in ETFs such as S&P 500 to cover the broad market
stupidGits@reddit
Wtf. This sort of knowledge is extremely common and accessible these days. How did you not come across it?? First build an emergency fund and then put the rest in a broad market index fund. Like some etf that tracks S&P500 or all world equity index. Google. You will find a lot of info on this.

Blowing all of your money on useless crap is obviously stupid. You need to learn how to save some money at a young age or you're going to have crazy debt and problems later on.
That said, yeah, why not spend some money on things that bring you joy? What's the point of life otherwise?
Balance, as with all things.
Silver_Orange_3653@reddit
i don’t need to spend money to bring myself joy. money is literally just a psyop to keep us enslaved. they tell us we always need new stuff and more stuff, we just need to keep buying and keep consuming so they can make us work more and keep the wheels of their machine turning. it’s all bullshit
fizzyboii@reddit
yeah but the problem is the people with shitty spending habits will see the part about spending money on things that make you happy as reinforcement for those habits. Even if u arent drowning in debt you shouldn't be eating outside, pouring money into hobbies and luxuries until u have a accumulation of money to help u live if u have a an injury/emergency.

I wouldn't be surprised if Anon 1 grew up with a poor relationship with money. When you grow up worrying about if your parent(s) can put food on the table, you start sacrificing things you'd find interesting for the sake of not making things more difficult for said parent(s). As you grow up, this can turn into never wanting to spend or just hoarding money, as sacrificing your interests became second nature. Furthermore, this leads to difficulty in understanding why people would splurge on things. I used to think people who went to concerts were morons, why spend $100+ to sit in a sweaty crowd and listen to music you could hear at home? But as I grew older, I realized it's because it's not about the money.

Mmaximuskeksimus@reddit

Honestly the point of money is what you make of it.
Save your cash for financial security and important purchases (like a house) at the expense of your social life? Reasonable take.
Spend your money enjoying yourself and having life experiences, at the risk of ending up broke? Also a reasonable take.
"Balancing" both? Cool, should you save 5% of your paycheck? 10%? 25%? What are you saving for? To reach a specific goal or for a "rainy day"?
