I live in a rural area with a busy, curvy two-lane highway that has no shoulder, poor visibility around curves, very few legal passing sections, head-on sunlight at certain times of the day, wild turkeys, coyotes, rabbits, squirrels, foxes, and the occasional stray dog or loose cow (hitting a cow with a car will kill all!). Some insane people ride their bikes on this highway morning, noon, and at dusk (when eyesight is poorest due to lack of contrast). They don’t wear bright colors, don’t have flashing lights, don’t have mirrors, and don’t care that the cautious drivers who have to wait for a safe place to pass with safe distance are putting their own safety at risk because of other drivers not seeing the hazard, or being willing to pass on a blind curve. Sometimes I think the bicyclists have no loved ones, because if they knew the risks they were taking regularly for that ride, they would try to talk them out of it. I’m terrified just running across the highway after looking both ways 10 times because people are driving 70-80mph through a lightly populated area with a 55mph speed limit (and no we can’t get the speed reduced because of California’s idiotic 85th percentile rule). Look it up; it’s too stupid to explain here. CalTrans traffic engineers deserve a special level in Hell. I’m happy with safe bike and ped lanes if they don’t create more automotive congestion!
Cars are the traffic. Cars will always be the traffic. Your brain flips off autopilot when driving when you see a bike, and brains automatically get angry when autopilot gets turned off, that’s why there’s road rage.
A small bicycle will never interrupt more than 3-7 seconds of traffic.
Now that's something you'll never see me doing. Cars going 40-45 is scary enough. I've been on back roads with kids flying through them going 55+ and it's not something I've repeated often unless I've absolutely had to but, highways? Never lol. That's a death wish that I don't have at the moment.
Very true. You gotta be pretty hardcore to get into either hobby. Me, I love them all. Cars, bikes, motorbikes, four wheelers and ATVs... They're all great and they're all a lot of fun if you do it right.
Recently started cycling myself. Only had time to do about 100 miles a week in the summer, then did Rosarito to Ensenada in 3:20, and now it's hard to ride with how fast it gets dark.

Damn he’s got a huge pair to do that or he has a death wish

You could say that about any cyclist at any given time.
A fender bender for you could be game over for them. Helmet or no helmet, there's no roll cage or airbags theatre going to save that person.
thecatsofwar@reddit
Then they shouldn’t be playing in the road around cars then.
sleepytipi@reddit
Such a preposterous thing to get upset about. Oh no, I'll be an extra two seconds late because I had to pass a cyclist! Whatever will I do!?

Maybe people should stop whining when bike lanes get built and we wouldn't need to ride in the road
RBeck@reddit
Same thing with motorcycles except they go at least 3x as fast.
