By the late 80s you had Cubans, East Germans, and Soviets supported the Angolan government against a US and South Africa backed UNITA. CIA advisors were on the ground (hello Mason and Woods) while South Africa changed from cross-border pursuit to full on armoured combat.

That's not even bringing in the 70s where you had the Portuguese trying to disengage while three different rebel movements fought them and each other. A South African blitzkrieg towards Luanda and rushed Cuban intervention.

To top it off, by the 90s, Angola were hiring former enemies from South Africa to train and lead their troops against UNITA. It was a wild wild war.

Would the curve on a STANAG 30 rounder really impede operation that much? I know the FAMAS had 25 rounders to keep the mags straight, but looking at it here, would it really have made a big enough difference to hinder operation?

It's more that the stamping machines at the M-anufacture d'A-rmes de S-aint Etienne (MAS) were made for Mas 44 and Mas 49 mags and thoses are straight,thoses machines couldn't bend mags, if more funding was put for new machines or a later partnership with FN (like the 30rds FNC mag for the Famas G2 that the French Navy Uses) the F1 would had 30rd mags.

Sidenote: the Famas F1 has a Fire rate of 900-1000 rds/min,the G2 has a fire rate of 1000-1100 rds/min (due to chamber fluting to facilitate extraction).
